G4 Camera module in G2? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I just recently bought a G4 camera module to see if there's a possibility of upgrading the G2 camera to 16MP. I noticed that the connector is the same so there was a chance for it to work. However, after I installed it, the phone couldn't connect to the camera. I tried taking drivers from the G4 and placing them in system folders but wasn't able to get it working. I haven't tried AOSP yet but I figured it would result in lower camera quality so perhaps it wouldn't be worth trying. I have tried several apps like XCam, Google Camera and Camera FV-5 and none of them were able to connect.
Has anyone else tried this? Do you have any suggestions on what else I could try to get the camera working?
Thanks!

I don't think that is possible, if it was, no one would be buying new device.

As far as I know, you are gonna need the drivers which probably wouldn't work on G2, but maybe if a developer chimes in to tell us

This is a cool idea in theory and it would be sweet if you could just drop it in and it would work. In reality, it is impossible. Even though the g2 and g4 modules may have similar dimensions and connectors, all of the secondary active/passive components that drive the camera at a hardware level may be very different. Even if they were the same, it would take a lot skill to make it compatible at the software level - which is not worth it imo.

I'm going to try with a marshmallow rom to see if it works. Do you guys think the processor/hardware may be incompatible? Or do you think it's just a software issue?

You did hardware job but without software it wont be possible. libs and drivers are different for both sensors to drive them.

It's a G4 camera, so I tried using the drivers and libs from a G4 rom. Wasn't able to get it to work, but I was hoping someone more knowledgeable would know if there's anything else I can try.

I'm not sure if even motherboard of G2 can properly support this cam module from G4, but except system drivers from LG G4 which has builded for this sensor (from the same android version as yours), you're need upgrade camera driver in kernel.

Do you think I should try with AOSP? I'm thinking I could try to merge a G2 and a G4 rom, might be easier than with stock roms. Thanks for the response!

Ok... I get it... So you want to change the sensor of G2 to the one that is on G4... Right? Then you'll need to have a custom kernel with merged (or replaced) camera drivers, and then extract the needed binaries from G4 to run the camera... But that's not all... You will need to change Android's framework too so that several features can be used.... And if G4's binaries depends on DRM, then you are on a Dead-End... It will be really hard but possible with a little bit of cleverness
Edit: If the sensor fits with G2's connectors, then it is hardware-compatible, so the only problem is the software and it is already stated
Edit again: I checked it a little bit... And I found out that the binaries from G4 will never be compatible with G2... Binaries where built for AArch64, sorry bro

I tried with Coolcamera to switch to the frontal camera, but the screen is "black"! I changed different ROM with no news! I think that is broken!!! is it possible that? should I change the camera? are there other driver for that? PLEASE help me!

If it's under warranty have it checked/repaired. It may be faulty or the connector may be loose. The danger in replacing the camera yourself is that it may not be the camera but a circuit board fault. If you do not have a warranty and are technically minded I can give a link for changing out or checking connection of the front camera.
Mike
thanks Mike; can I have that link please? where can I buy a new cam?
many thanks

I don't know of a source for the camera off-hand but I'll do some checking.
Mike
I have the same problem on my HTC TyTN. Videocalls don't seem to be working anymore (they used to). I've never updated the ROM.
What's odd is that I can't use any of the 2 cameras for videocalls eventhough the main camera works when it comes to taking pictures or making videos.
(I haven't tested the sensor camera since there is no possibility to use it outside of videocalls).
I would think my problem was software related.....
Any idea to fix this?

So far as I'm aware you can only use front cam for video calls. Why you can't make video calls anymore could be troublesome to track down. I suppose a hard reset would be going too far?? (got any full backups? - should have and then these issues are easily solved)
It sounds like the main camera is working normally. The front camera can be used as a regular camera or video recorder and even a web cam. There are a few applications available from Ateksoft that can get these things working for you. The software is not free although they may still have trial versions available:
Coolcamera: http://www.ateksoft.com/
This will also let you know if there are problems with the front camera.
Mike
Thanks for the info!
I've just installed Webcamera trial version. It works with the main camera, however if I choose the front camera, nothings happens (the application seems to not be able to intialize the front camera as it will hang undefinitely...)
I guess my front camera isn't working properly... That sucks as I can't imagine being without my HTC TyTN if I was to send it for repairs (hopefully I don't make that many videocalls).

Mmm.. that's a pity. paersonally I never make video calls but I would be annoyed if I thought it would not work if and when I choose to. Have you tried a hard reset - I know that can be a big hassle if you don't keep full backups but still it would confirm (more or less!) whether it's a hardware fault or not.
Mike
like i sow in other topic this is common problem for many users (within me) , i expect it to be something else than hardware problem ...
same problem here!
Any solutions?

can't connect to camera.

my lg g2 can't connect to camera and hence force crashes, the front camera works. i replaced the camera by buying a new one, but the issue is still present,
i've noticed something though, when i installed a torch app, the following message comes up - "Due to limitation of your hardware or OS, your device does not support LED Cam light, We will light up your screen at maximum instead."
It also says - "Your LED is being used by another application. We will light up your screen instead."
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers
Try reflash your phone to stock .kdz might help.

thanks the issue is still present in stock kdz
and the same messages pop up with the torch app.
Also as a note, the rear camera also does not work in safe mode.

These would probably a hardware issue then. Since nothing could fix it by meant of software. Did you get a genuine camera module for the replacement? Im afraid its not compatible or at least the module itself is broken. If you happen to consider buying another camera module i would suggest getting G3 camera module as it 100 percent compatible with G2 and also it had a little better spec.

could it be that the replacement camera is faulty? hmmm, i'm not sure. the one i got was genuine though. so im not, i fell inclined to believe it may be the camera flash thats causing these issues.

Sometimes even a perfectly careful assembly could mess up something. Maybe its just a loose cable or shorting something. It could be.
Any solution to it ??? I also have same issue? @salespalace

Turned out to be a hardware issue - despite replacing with a new camera port, still didn't work, - which told me there was an issue with the motherboard. sold the phone off. so no real solution. sorry.

S4 i9506 both cameras not working (tried everything i could find)

Hello there to all.
I´m newly registered to the forum, although i´ve been using it to search, learn and use roms in my Samsung s3 for some time now.
I´ve bought recently a used S4 i9506. At the time i tested several key points of the device to check if it was all working, however (and don´t ask me why because i cant explain it), i completely forgot to test the cameras.
My problem is the following. Everytime i try to access the camera it says that camera failed or something like server connection failed. I´ve tried every single resolution i could find on the internet and so far all failed to solve it. The problem seems to be in both cameras, i think, because when i try the code *#0*# both Mega cam and front cam give error. Here´s what i tried so far:
- Soft Reset/Hard Reset/factory reset;
- Cleared cache both from boot and manually erasing cache from com.sec.android.gallery3d;
- Tried 3rd party camera apps from GooglePlay;
- Tried the RestartCamera.apk;
- Tried 3 different firmwares for i9506;
- Tried rooting it and then flashed several different roms;
- Switched the rear camera with a new i9506 rear camera module that i bought;
- I cant also test the cameras, because when i use the code *#34971539# they bring a menu on which i can´t use almost every option (see image);
http : / / rghost.net/6Zby4zXFD/image . png
Anyone have any other possible resolution?
I´m thinking on maybe buying a front camera module. Could that do the trick? Could the front facing camera not working properly make the rear camera fail as well?
Thank you for the attention to all who took the time to read.
So far 60 people read and nobody answered. ... is it because you don´t know what else i can do? I´ve been reading the problem may be from the motherboard. What can i do on the motherboard to make things right?
Thanks again
Be patient my friend someone will answer soon
Hi,
I've got the same problem with my s4mini. Both cameras aren't working and all the solutions you explained don't solve it.
I'm thinking about buying another S4mini with broken Display in order to change the motherboard. This might be the only possibility to solve this......
Greetings from Germany

Hey there m8.
I know the feeling, right?!
The thing is that for a faulty i9506 model i could almost buy myself another motherboard and mount it, but i was hoping to find some other solution, maybe even some electronics expert opinion on what i could do in the motherboard to make it work again. There are some videos on youtube that teaches how to change some components on the motherboard to solve problems like dead smartphone or constant auto reboots. Also, finding a faulty i9506 model isn´t as easy as finding a regular S4. :crying:
Thx for sharing the problem and for the opinions,
and greetings from Portugal
Today i've changed the mainboard aaaaaaand -> cameras still not working
So i started to change the front cramera and the ear-brightness-sensor from the old s4 mini with the broken screen into my working one. And now both cameras are working again!:good:
I think the cause is most likely the brightness sensor which is combined with the ear speaker. This could explain why both cameras are not working.
I'm not completely sure due to i changed the front camera also. However changing the main camera did not do anything as mentioned above.
Maybe i should mention: A few weeks ago i've changed the earspeaker-brightness-unit because the speaker wasn't working anymore. Right after this both cameras stopped working.

Thank you for the update on your situation m8. That could be some relevant information there. Can anyone confirm if the sensor is the same for all s4 models? If so i could find more easily one from another s4 model and try it, for the sake of desperation.

Possible Front Facing/Selfie Camera Issues

Hi all,
Been going crazy trying to find the 'selfie' camera on my new Axon 7 A2017G.
Used the SD update method and images from the AU Axon 7 site to go from what was the latest MM to the current latest available N image (1.2.0B09).
Stock Camera App doesn't seem to have a 'selfie' / front facing camera mode.
Open Camera doesn't have a switch, and the icon used for switching in Snapchat is also missing.
I'm hoping im being a complete numpty and missing something obvious, bc otherwise this is sounding like a fairly serious software/hardware issue.
Have tried clearing data and cache both through android and through the stock recovery, as well as a factory reset through both android and stock recovery.
Any thoughts?
Attached is a screenshot of the stock camera app right after a recovery factory reset (thumbnail link to full).

Lol you don't have it. That's just because you don't have a front camera attached; I used to have my moto g 2 fully disassembled and if the front camera wasn't attached the button wouldn't appear.
You have two ways around this: follow jerryrigeverything's video and try to reseat the connector, or just send it in for repairs or whatever

Yea ended up looking into it after posting here and came to a similar conclusion. Not very happy atm, as thats a pretty big thing to be broken out of the box :/
Will be contacting both the retailer i purchased it from as well as ZTE to see what can be done.

I mean, how do you know the transport didn't disconnect it? Maybe it wasn't properly seated, it passed qc testing, and it got disconnected later
It's also attached with a piece of tape I think, so i think it's plausible
But yeah, just send it in.

My camera doesn´t work after changing motherboard. Compatibility between camera-cpu?

Hello.
Some years ago, my screen died and becase of I had a good motherboard, I bought another H815 to sustitute the screen.
Then, some components like camera or speakers did not work, so I tried to use the components that came with the H815 I bouth, instead of use the components I had in my old H815. By this way I achieved my phone to work fully.
Some months ago, my motheboard died, and I bought a new one(I think new) from Israel in Ebay.
I had the same problem, this time, only with camera. I tried both rear cameras I had. With one unit, the app show that this don´t work and with the other I only can see strange and purple lines. In both situations, the front camera works well.
Something that is difficult to understand to me, is that in some apps like whatsapp, one of the cameras works in some occasion ( I can see all well, but too vertical purple lines on white things in the image).
I tried apps like google camera or to installing the native lg app too, but I can´t do anything to solve the problem.
Anyone know how to know the compatibility between cameras and motherboards in H815 terminals? I tried to bouth a third camera but I had the same problem. I know the cameras are not damaged and work in other terminals.
Do you think if it is possible to solve this installing a different rom on my H815? I tried different rooms on my old first gen Motorola Moto g, but I have any experience with H815, can you guide me some, if you think that this is a possible solution?
Thanks a lot!

I changed my m/b too on my G4 from a seller in taobao (815t->F500) It works great, camera were fine. So I think it might be you camera module or faulty m/b is at fault... cos changing m/b should not cause any problems.
