To those who are having trouble with the action memo function of their Note 4, specifically writing a partial memo, then minimizing it to collect more info (or just keep it readily available until the task at hand was completed), and as soon as the note shrunk to that little yellow-ish square, it vanished? As if the system was treating it as a running process but forgot to actually display the minimized memo? This problem prevents you from just opening up another action memo because again, the system thinks "I'm sorry Dave. I know you want to use action memo, but it's already running." in order to get it to come back up again you have to either reboot, or you -might- be able to kill a few S Note-related processes and get it to come back up again.
This problem frustrated me quite a bit and I couldn't figure out what was causing the problem until recently during my toying with the developer settings, I decided it looked and felt much better when all three of the animations were turned down. The phone still showed a little eye candy, but got things done faster at the same time. All three of them set at .5 worked well for me. However, for some reason when those animation settings were set lower than 1, the action memo minimization animation would shrink (pleasantly) quickly into its little square, causing some kind of hiccup with the system and then it poofs. I fixed this problem by changing the animation settings to 1 for all three. Inconvenient, but I get my action memo back, which I use daily.
Just a tip I hadn't seen on the Note 4 forums that I wanted to add for any others experiencing the same issue and wondering how in the world to fix it.
Cheers!
Doesn't work for me on both 0.5/1x
It is an annoying issue.
If anyone else finds a solution to that, please post here.
So it still vanishes when you minimize action memo, even though your animation speeds are set to 1?

I have a MDA Vario. In SETTINGS --> TODAY --> ITEMS tab, what is "Today timeout", which is set at "4 hr" by default?? Does anyone know pls? I do not see any reference to it in the manual. Thx.
Tones
I think that's the amount of time after which it will return to the today screen if you left it with an app open and didn't touch it.
i tried it last night by leaving a game running, but it was still there when i got up the next day. it does seem to be the function u described, mate. Anyone else have any ideas pls?
A game will certainly work differently as it will request permanent focus and fullscreen. Just try with a standard app like calendar...
well, it was only a simple solitaire card game, but nonetheless I will try standard one like you suggested. But if this "timeout" function really is to return to TODAY screen, what is the real use of it? to timeout in 4 hours? and the longest possible time option is 12 hours.
Doesn't it simply stop refreshing the today screen (ie the clock and other values)?
It still refreshes the clock when you put it into sleep mode. However, after a number of hours it always takes some time for the clock to jump to the correct time.
It is the idle time before the Today screen is shown.
It's near useless, I almost always keep my today screen on anyway, because who wants to wait 4hours to see it
Use my TodayButton app if you want quick access to the Today screen...
V
personally, I always return to the TODAY screen anyway by shutting down applications after i'm done with them. I just thought this "timeout" thing was a sophisticated and useful function, but it turns out to be quite the opposite. But i will never understand why anyone want to design it to timeout in HOURS and not in minutes.
I'm the same, I shut down apps and always leave it on the Today screen!

Doesn't the Red button do that anyway?
Nah, red button minimises apps to leave them running in the background (I think it actually just switches to the today screen). Some don't mind this, but for me, if I want the app open, I'll open it, and when I want it closed, I want it closed.
VJOkButt allows you to use the red button to minimse or close, and also properly close the phone to save around 3mb memory. But it does this sympathetically with the phone, so if you're in the phone, it hangs up, but otherwise it's a minimiser.

Morale of the story.... no one knows it. I always keep it disabled. So no big deal.
Had PDF softcopy of Reference Manual of my O2AL, and searched with no hint at all. Lets be it.....

Guys,
I just stumbled upon this thread and thought it might be a good idea to get educated. I never knew it.
But this is what I thought - I thought it is the time slot to show appointments.
Means, if you chose a slot of 4 hours, and there are continuous meetings scheduled in your calender (and display of them enabled), then it would act like a rolling 4 hours window (read as slot).
Does this make sense? I never had so many appointmens, but always thought this was the use of it.
Comments please.
Hello,
I got my hero about 3 weeks ago. I was content with not rooting it and just using what it came with; However, once I saw how slow the keyboard rotation was, I have since been on a quest... trying all the different roms to see if the keyboard would rotate faster.
Just so we are clear, Im talking about the on-screen keyboard on my Sprint Hero (with Google). When I rotate the phone from portrait to landscape, the screen goes dim and then pauses for a few seconds before it rotates. I am kind of interested in the processes that happen when it rotates and I was thinking it just took that long before the accel-meter noticed that the phone had rotated and then once it figured it out, another second or two to redraw everthing.
But then when using the fresh 1.0 rom I noticed that extra animation setting where it zooms the screen out and then it rotates and swings back and forth for a while. When I turn the phone sideways it INSTANTLY zooms out and swings... no-delay. But that whole animation takes a few seconds and actually seems like it takes longer before the keyboard is usable again.
Anyway, I know this is getting long so I will just get to it. Do you guys know of any rom, or setting, or modification to this phone that will stop it from dimming the screen and taking so long before it rotates. My bosses iphone is near instant in it's rotation habits, and that is what I am after. I mean, yea, I love that locale does a lot of extra stuff for me, sipdroid lets me make calls over wifi, and I can use this phone as a remote for XBMC. But if it cannot do these basic things quickly, like rotating the keyboard, then I am going to consider spending my free time modifying my own rom. I am chest deep writing my first two apps for android and was hoping not to have to spend much time on such a trivial thing.
Is it sense? Is it the screen dimming animation? Any directions you can give me that will point me in the direction of giving this phone a stern kick in the butt would be appreciated. As I said, I am not afraid to dive into making my own custom rom, just down want to start that trip if I don't have to.
Thanks for any help you can give me guys.

/system/framework/framework-res.apk > res > anim houses all of the phones animations.
Ones of particular interest to you would likely be fade_in, fade_out, accelerate_interpolator, decelerate_interpolator.
The down side? These are not human readable xml files, they are in binary. I can tell you that what you would look at changing would be
Code:
android:duration="@android:010E0002"
What I can't tell you is how to change it, because honestly I don't know. You can use axmlprinter2 (google it) to read it, but you can't convert it back to binary.
Thanks, I am checking that out now. I was able to look into all these cookie-cutter animations and see that they all seem pretty sluggish. Hopefully the api is documented/open enough to look into the process and see where all the time is spent. It is just mind-boggling that no one from HTC looked at this and tried to compare the user experience with other phones. I played with the droid a little and the keyboard is instant on it too. I doubt it is just a limit of the hero hardware.
It seems like the stock rotation setting makes the backlight dim and not fade-in or out in terms of animation. Any clue why? It doesn't seem like I can turn it off.
I ran that emulator version for the android SDK that lets you see how your app works when you rotate the screen. Unfortunately it doesn't follow the same routine that the actual phone uses when rotating and is merely for visuals.
I apologize if this has already been covered. If it has, I wasn't able to find it.
1)
After a call, when I pull the phone away, the notification bar gets stuck "slightly" pulled down and touches to the screen are unresponsive. I have to pull the notification bar down all the way, then put it back up to make it go away. Otherwise, the bar just stays at about a half inch (or less) from the top of the screen. I'm using the SuperDark rom, but I don't think it's an issue with that since I remember the same thing happening with one of the first calls I made on the phone. It seems to happen about 1 out of 4 calls I make. I'm pretty used to it now and I usually just end the call using the notification bar when it happens, but I wanted to know if anyone is experiencing this and how it can be avoided/fixed.
2)
Animated GIFs. I saw the post of annoyances saying how the browser doesn't support them. But I couldn't find anything about the Gallery app not supporting them, either. I can deal with the browser, but I use Chandroid for 4chan and such, and it would be nice to view the animated GIFs I save from Chandroid in the Gallery. Is there a fix for this? Or possibly an alternate Gallery app I can use?
Thanks in advance
1. Don't press phone against ear until the proximity sensor turns the backlight off.
2. Don't have a specific answer. But I bet 2.2 wouldn't hurt.
good day
Looks like there was a discussion about the gif thing back in April.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660914
I have seen conflicting information about this, though, on the web. I have a phone with 2.2 at home, so I will give it a test tonight and let you know, unless someone replies sooner.
First of all, how awesome is this forum !!!
I consider myself a pretty "upright" forum user as in I usually read the pinned, "read this first", Q&A, and search before I make new posts. Whenever I come upon people who don't do that, I kinda frown to my computer screen but beyond that seems like nothing much can be done? The "Here are the similar threads we found:" section is just pure brilliance.
Sorry about the rambling but I will start with a tiny background story first.
So once upon a time, I got warned thru my gmail that my account apparently was "compromised". After I did some preliminary verification to make sure they are not spams, I decided to try the google "2-step verification" process. And I bet most of you knew what comes next: I keep getting bad password popups. After some hours of frustrating struggle, I fixed my gmail on my phone. But Gtalk would not let me do that 1-time psasword verification thing, and thus my play store won't work. (God really who designed them to be linked!? I did not launch Gtalk once in my life.) Before this happened, I was happy with my stock launcher from Samsung and always have the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" motto. In the end, I decided it is "certified broken" and I thought this might be a good time to look into upgrading to Jelly Bean.
hm.. i think i'm making this post unnecessary long so I will just cut through the chase. I never thought "stock" stuff would come in any quality. But amazingly in my first day experience of CM10, I am already missing a bunch of features that I used to take for granted. I have no desire to go back to the last launcher (as this in theory should be a step up overall, i believe). So if anyone have tips for me to how to get these features back, I would very much like some pointers! Thanks in advance.
Just some clarification in case this matter: I bought my phone unlocked in Hong Kong. So there is no service-provider-associated stuff that came with the stock launcher I got.
EDIT: I used the 11-02 nightly build of CM10 and its corresponding Gapp package.
1) Contact list
+ Improved: To my amaze, my chinese contacts got sorted by their pronunciation in english! The original stock launcher lumped all of them in the end of the list.
- What I missed: Slide left on names will message the contact and slide right will call them.
# What I tried: Of course my first solution is to search on App store to find a replacement. For some reasons, only two (with good rating) showed up. Did the search got dumber? Or it got smarter but just not doing what I want?
Go Contacts: I think i remember trying it and personally not a big fan of the GO packages. I didn't give it a second try.
Contants+ with a penguin icon: There's a function that lets you "Hold" on a contact to call them. This is very much inferior to the slidings : ( I need recommendations for contact list app.
2) App drawer
+ I like how the widgets got attached to the horizontal pages. Much nicer option than Homescreen-> menu and keep scrolling through the 1x4 area LOL. I love widgets and I have a lot of them. Yes it was painful.
- You can't custom organize the drawer. You can sort by Name or Install Date and that's it. I used to organize them by functionality. I have over 160 apps on my phone. I don't use all of them all the time but I would say I use close to 70% of them at least once in a while. So while my homescreen is really reserved for Widgets, App drawer is where I launch my less-used apps. I really like the "menu -> edit" function in my old launcher. I can create new page, move the apps around and even uninstall the app right there (with a minus sign on the top right corner of the app icon. Yes I didn't use to understand why one would even need uninstaller app from the store). Please don't hate me if you really just rather sort by Name.
# Funny the problem this time is not about how I can't find a suitable app from the play store to do a better job with the drawer. It's that I CAN'T move the original app drawer icon of the launcher from the bottom middle area. I imagine there's probably a way to replace it but it's obviously not a readily available option or I am missing something.
3) Task manager?
+ I think it's just recent launched apps (or apps in the background) now. It's in a way good that it goes beyond the last 6. Not that I find that old limit bothering really.
- Where's my task manager? I'm a bit OCD when it comes to ram usage and processes/services. Oh how i missed the Hold home button -> recent app screen with a task manager button -> Kill all task. LOL It's not much but it shows just enough: total ram usage, running apps, processes, and even storage space. Scratch that, it's actually very much.
# Right now I am resort to Auto Memory Manager with a blue fish icon. It's sufficient. But I can't access it anywhere.
4) Misc. stuff that I missed and would like help to find them. Note: these have nothing to do with the launcher.
- I used to have this "Windy Weather" live wall paper (or what i believed it was called). There were some wind turbines running on a grass field. It reflects the current weather. I scour the store and I couldn't find anything remotely like that besides having to go back to the GO family or you have to pay. I know it's not recommended but I tried titanium back up to restore it from my old system - no luck.
- Ap news widget. The widget was 2x4. It does not refreshes on its own and only do so with a tiny refresh button on the bottom right corner. It cycles through headlines with pictures that fully stretches the whole 2x4 window (beautifully). Can't find it in the store.
- Pinch on the home screen zooms out and gives you a quick view of all 7(now 5, but I can live with that) pages of home screen.
- That's all for now. I think I am still missing a few things I wanted to mention but I forgot what they are at the moment
anyway, sorry about some of the ranting. Here are some features i like:
+ File Manager is awesome.
+ Camera is great as well. And I love the quick browse gallery. It's weird that the actual gallery don't even have to pinch function while they put it here.
+ The pull down menu is clean. I kinda missed the "auto-rotation" quick set. But it's minor. I usually don't allow auto rotation anyway. I also like the setting button in there. But I used it so much I have to put a short cut on the home screen anyway.
+ The animation when you turn off the screen is COOL
+ The lock screen which gives you direct access to the camera is very convenient as well.
There is no sammy like app with swipe unfortunately.(edit :didnt know ex dialer has it sry_
Try apex launcher, nova launcher, adw ex launcher(i prefer this at the moment, pletora of settings)
autorotation ,play with toggle settings in system settings menu.
Don't bother with ram, free ram is wasted ram.
That windmill wallpaper i think go has something similar to it but i dont use it as it is a huge battery hogger .I just use a plain wallpaper.
I suggest u stay playing a bit with the lockscreen/system settings
Hi, i use ex dialer and it have slide right to call and slide left to sms.
Cheers!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
For dialer I recommend Dialer Ex from Play. I also missed the swipe to call & message function from Sammy roms. This app does it(it also has other great features like theme support etc.!)
Sent from my premium potato
1) ExDialer. You will never look back. You can customize it to your taste and it has the features you ask.
2) You need to use another launcher for that, but in my case I got accustomed to search for apps instead of looking for icons. It's easier and can be done from everywhere in your launcher if you click and hold the Menu key. You can also have folders in the Home screen, that's also a nice way to organize. Why I ended doing this? Because other launchers have too many options.
3) You shouldn't care about running apps. You can kill them by pressing Menu key on the Home and selecting manage apps. There, in "Running" you have the apps that are currently working on the background, the memory they use and you can eventually kill them. I'm against that unless you have an issue with an app (like Media Scanner going rogue).
4) GO Weather. You can download it from the web if it's not on the store and side-load it. But I have it available. I can't help you with the news widget as I never found one useful enough to my usage patterns. I don't think the default launcher can show you all Home screens at once.
Thanks for all the help guys. You are quick to reply : )
android manages ram efficiently u dont need to free ram if u still want to have a kill apps button on recent apps its part of aokp and if u want to have it on cm10 try pacman rom
I'm have slight buyers remorse, but I have a few more days till I can't return it for a full refund. I hoping to find out if any of the issue I have with the Note 3 or more accurately touchwiz will be able to be solved. I'm coming from a history of running customs ROMS on my galaxy S1 and galaxy S2, most of the time cyaogenmod. Lucky I find touchwiz has improved but here are my over all gripes:
Can't change the vibration pattern for notifications, most importantly text messages and emails. You can create customs patterns but they are only for calls. This is my biggest problem right now. And the fact that clearing a message from the notification bar doesn't mark it as read is annoying.
I would love on screen buttons, with this much screen restate it's a great phone for on screen buttons, I also find getting low enough to press the capacitive buttons with my thumb and still holding the phone a bit difficult and I think I would have no trouble if there was on screen buttons. - SoftKey Enabler, requires root- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fatedevgroup.softkeyenabler&feature=search_result
Home buttons wakes the phone - Fixable by mod or wanam http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477150
Double home press open magazine - Settings in Magazine, gesture disable can be done by freezing magazine in titanium
Replace S Voice with google voice. - Freeze with titanium then use double tap to get to google voice
Remove all toggles from notification area, have all the toggles in the toggle pane
Remove the persitant icons from the task bar (blocking mode, smart stay, NFC)
All logs in phone log - fixable with app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.log.converter.ics
I really got used and liked the pop up/quick message window option that cyaogenmod had. I would like that along with the removal of chat bubbles.
I also liked black/Holo design, I sure this can and will come some how. Also we'll see how kitkat ends up looking...
How likely is it that my gripes with touchwiz can be fixed, yet still stay on touchwiz framework due to not wanting to lose functionality? I am aware it will require root and most likely a custom ROM, but if I was able to start out with just some modifications to stock rom, that might be a good start. I might find out but 1-4 are my biggest complaints. I love the note 3's hardware, but I'm hoping the roms/touchwiz won't push me toward the nexus 5....
One additional question, all these model numbers are confusing as hell. I have the N900W8, will that hinder my ability to use custom roms? Is it an equivalent to another model number? (X-Note is the only roms I've seen so far the explicitly says its compatible with the 900W8)

If you open Magazine and hit menu, then choose Settings, you can turn the double home press off from in there.
The swipe from the bottom gesture can't be disabled short of doing something like freezing Magazine with Titanium Backup.

A fwlew of these things are easily fixed with xposed wanam module. You need to be rooted though. As for Google voice, freeze svoice (maybe you can just clear defaults, but I froze it) then when you double tap home, you'll be given options in what you want that to do.
