I have a MDA Vario. In SETTINGS --> TODAY --> ITEMS tab, what is "Today timeout", which is set at "4 hr" by default?? Does anyone know pls? I do not see any reference to it in the manual. Thx.
Tones
I think that's the amount of time after which it will return to the today screen if you left it with an app open and didn't touch it.
i tried it last night by leaving a game running, but it was still there when i got up the next day. it does seem to be the function u described, mate. Anyone else have any ideas pls?
A game will certainly work differently as it will request permanent focus and fullscreen. Just try with a standard app like calendar...
well, it was only a simple solitaire card game, but nonetheless I will try standard one like you suggested. But if this "timeout" function really is to return to TODAY screen, what is the real use of it? to timeout in 4 hours? and the longest possible time option is 12 hours.
Doesn't it simply stop refreshing the today screen (ie the clock and other values)?
It still refreshes the clock when you put it into sleep mode. However, after a number of hours it always takes some time for the clock to jump to the correct time.
It is the idle time before the Today screen is shown.
It's near useless, I almost always keep my today screen on anyway, because who wants to wait 4hours to see it
Use my TodayButton app if you want quick access to the Today screen...
V
personally, I always return to the TODAY screen anyway by shutting down applications after i'm done with them. I just thought this "timeout" thing was a sophisticated and useful function, but it turns out to be quite the opposite. But i will never understand why anyone want to design it to timeout in HOURS and not in minutes.
I'm the same, I shut down apps and always leave it on the Today screen!

Doesn't the Red button do that anyway?
Nah, red button minimises apps to leave them running in the background (I think it actually just switches to the today screen). Some don't mind this, but for me, if I want the app open, I'll open it, and when I want it closed, I want it closed.
VJOkButt allows you to use the red button to minimse or close, and also properly close the phone to save around 3mb memory. But it does this sympathetically with the phone, so if you're in the phone, it hangs up, but otherwise it's a minimiser.

lolz
Morale of the story.... no one knows it. I always keep it disabled. So no big deal.
Had PDF softcopy of Reference Manual of my O2AL, and searched with no hint at all. Lets be it.....
I thought...
Guys,
I just stumbled upon this thread and thought it might be a good idea to get educated. I never knew it.
But this is what I thought - I thought it is the time slot to show appointments.
Means, if you chose a slot of 4 hours, and there are continuous meetings scheduled in your calender (and display of them enabled), then it would act like a rolling 4 hours window (read as slot).
Does this make sense? I never had so many appointmens, but always thought this was the use of it.
Comments please.

Hey I got my XDA Exec this morning which I'm really please about, been using it for a couple of hours but for some reason the clock has disappeared from the title bar in the today screen and I can't get it back!
Does anyone know what might have happened, about the only thing I've got installed is Pocket Plus 3.
Infact i've noticed that the volume icon is gone too, but if i click where it should be the pop-up appears for me to change the volume levels.
It's like there is something covering these two icons and it's driving me mad, having the time visible there is about one of the most useful things
This is a common problem
This happened to me too. It was caused by the O2 software. If you do a search on this site using the words "clock missing" there have been many posts on this subject and the solutions of how to remove the O2 software are posted too.
The O2 interface also seems to slow up the machine and cause a lot of freezing requiring a soft reset. My machine has been tons better since removing it.
If you decide that you would rather have the clock than the O2 software (and most people do) and decide to remove it, remember first of all to save your phone and GPRS setting to your filestore! This can save you a lot of time. If you like the 02 today screen theme then you could save this too.
Also I recommend that you make a backup first so that you can go back to how you are now if you need to.
Good Luck
Open the clock and you should find an extra tab at the bottom called - "More" select that and a new option appears Display the clock on the title bar in all programs.
Neither of those options worked, in the end I hard resetted the device and set it up in corporate mode I found using a PIN I got by just searching google! No more O2 Active anywhere, and I've got my clock back! I'd only had the device a few hours so luckily it didn't take too long to set everything back up how it was before hand The only thing I had to do was manually set up the GPRS connection again but that was simple enough since I already had all the settings saved
What does the Today Time OFF do? I tried changing the time off and I can't seem to notice any difference if I set it to 1 hour or 12 hours.
Hello Christian,
You're going to have to be a bit more precise. What Today Time Off?
Perhaps you're talking of this setting, which has mystified many:
Under Start/Settings/Today, the second tab (Items), has a "Today Timeout" option that never seems to do anything.
What this option actually does, is that if your device has been off for the selected amount of time (1hr - 12hr), the operating system will hide (minimise) all the active windows, and bring the Today Screen to the foreground. This is useful for those people that run Today items with information they would like to check (stock tickers, calendar viewers), and not have to be reminded that they had a game running last time they were using the device.
If this is not it, please be more specific.
Small app to utilize the built in lock function in new PPC6700 ROM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it possible to create a small app that simulates pressing the "device lock" plugin on the today screen every time the phone goes into standby? This would make the new lock feature be 100% useful and also make it fool proof. So every time your phone goes into standby mode (phone screen off, or pressing the off button on top of the phone) this would trigger the today plug in to activate!
What do you all think?
I've had an idea to write a screenlock myself, but it would work on the same basis.
I want to test something though: I wonder what the time lag is between pressing power on and an app installed in the notification queue being enabled.
My VJLumosII works like this, and takes maybe a second to enable itself. I think that's not a bad time lag. So you could write an app to launch itself on power on, to automatically enable the lock...
If anyone else is interested, please do dive in... fittske - maybe you can change the title of the thread to make it apply to everyone!?
Otherwise, when I get a little more time I'll look into it.

Thanks for the quick response! Sure If any one else has any ideas please do jump in!
I'm in!
I usually depend on MortSaver for this, but I would love an app that locked/unlocked with a hard-button (as opposed to clicking on Today which is silly). Exempting a blue-tooth voice dial button would also be great. I can build for this platform in .NET, but I sense that the response time wouldn't be as good as a C++ implementation.

RE: App to use Today Lock - Thanks!
Ooooo, I literally have been dreaming of this all day. Again, no disrepect to MortSaver, but a tighter intregration and better lookin' ui never hurts.
Thanks!
James
Jakenuts: you've been dreaming of this all day?
May I point you towards this thread:

Have you tried the app? Did it work?
V
hey,
I was wondering through the forum, searching for the manual screen lock app.
going through people's responses its worth trying - where can I find & try the app?
will it work on original WM6?
My X1 won't wake up to the panels, it wakes up to TF3D i have installed... is there a way to have it wake up to the 9 panel page? Like a cab, reg edit or something?
I've searched and haven't found anything...
Thanks in advance!
create a shortcut of panelmanager.exe in Program Files\PanelManager and put it in windows\startup
edit: noticed you said wake up...the solution i've posted should work when you turn the phone on. Not for wake up though.
yeah, thanks for the insight tho bro... id really like to see wake up in panels view...
If you want your phone to wake up to the panel you used the last:
When you are using S2U2 then switch off the option for "unlock to home".
Also uncheck Start --> Properties --> Today --> Elements --> show today screen after xxx hours.
If you want the phone to wake up into the "Panel selection screen" -this won't be possible, I fear.
found a partial work around... under backlight settings, i uncheck turn odd device after X minutes... that way, if i turn my backlight off when in 9 panel mode, it will always wake up to it... basically it will wake up where u left it! this will work for now til a real fix/tweak comes along

I don't think that there will be a "fix" because there is no "issue".
The phone is not meant to wake up to the panel selection screen. This would be as if my home computer would boot to the taskmanager or I would enter a house through the elevator and not through the front door
I don't really want to know why you want your phone to wake up the the panel selection because I'm sure you have your reasons but you seem to be one in a million to like such a behaviour.
If I would have to choose a panel first everytime I wake up the phone to see the clock or the calender or the messages I would bring it back to the store the same day and buy another one.

well, i wear a wrist watch and tapping a panel to check messages isn't that big of a deal to me... and altho its not a "fix", it will be more of a "Tweak"...
But, i plan on taking a crack at creating my own panels (not sure how difficult it would be) and that way i can put specific programs to launch from panels, for example Opera or a specific media player...
All i can say is "to each his own" mah man....
maybe i feel this way because i've had a Touch Pro for a while now and am kind of tired of TF3D (altho it is nice to have on the X1), but i recieved this x1 as a generous bday gift from a friend today and am infatuated with these panels!
I made a new app from start to finish and even uploaded it on my Nexus 5.
It's called "Light Shade"
Head on over and check it out!

Sounds interesting,
What does your app do and can you provide some screenshots please? I'd like to know more about it
I don't believe I am allowed to post links here yet. I will post some screenshots and a link to the free version when I can. But for now, here is the description in the Play Store:
Here is the description on the Play Store:
Ever been lying in bed at night, not able to sleep, and want to mess around on your phone without disturbing your partner in the bed next to you? Of course you have...
What about being in a theatre or at a play and need to text someone or email without disturbing the people around you? Yep...
Ever been outside and need to use your phone quickly, but you can't see the screen for the sun? Uh huh...
LIGHT SHADE TO THE RESCUE!
Light Shade doesn't do anything your phone can't already do, it just does a lot of things quickly and easily at the same time, making things easier and faster for you. It's all about convenience and speed. With a simple yet beautiful design, it is intuitive and easy to use. Just touch the icon, (or assign it to a pie menu or navigation bar for even quicker access) and a menu will slide in with just 3 simple options;
Night
Normal
Day
Lets go over what each one does
Night: - Immediately cuts off ALL sound (media, ringer, alarms) and vibration - Dims the display all the way down - Locks the rotation of the display into portrait view
This is perfect for lying on your side in the bed at night poking your phone and NOT disturbing your bed mate. This mode is also good for the aforementioned theatres or plays.
Next is...
Normal: - This basically reverses the other two modes so, - all sound back to normal - display back to normal - rotation back to normal
Your usual usage settings for being indoors and not next to someone sleeping. Pretty self explanatory that one
And finally...
Day: -This button leaves all the other options at normal, but turns the display brightness all the way up!
That previously mentioned sunshine is no match for FULL DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS!!!
See, pretty cool huh? Convenience and speed. Just for Night mode, most people would have to fiddle with at least 3 different things to achieve what this app does in a very quick 1 tap. And switching between these modes quickly without this app... Forget about it
Oh, and this app also presents itself to you as an overlay, so you can access it "over" what ever it is your doing at the moment so it is as convenient and quick as possible without being interuptive in any way. Also, a nice and easy to reach menu made for your thumb. A piece of cake to reach with it, no matter how big your screen. More apps should be like that, don't you think?
Well that's it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and that it is as useful to you, as it has been for me.
