Today Time OFF? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

What does the Today Time OFF do? I tried changing the time off and I can't seem to notice any difference if I set it to 1 hour or 12 hours.

Hello Christian,
You're going to have to be a bit more precise. What Today Time Off?
Perhaps you're talking of this setting, which has mystified many:
Under Start/Settings/Today, the second tab (Items), has a "Today Timeout" option that never seems to do anything.
What this option actually does, is that if your device has been off for the selected amount of time (1hr - 12hr), the operating system will hide (minimise) all the active windows, and bring the Today Screen to the foreground. This is useful for those people that run Today items with information they would like to check (stock tickers, calendar viewers), and not have to be reminded that they had a game running last time they were using the device.
If this is not it, please be more specific.

Today timeout?

Hi guys!
What is the "today timeout" check box in the today's option (Items tab)?
It's a timer that will show the Today screen if you haven't used the device for say 1 hour.
It's near useless in my opinion, since it would be nice to set it to appear every time you switch on etc.
Try my TodayButton program for easier access to Today screen.

It is useless. I utilize the password protect function which makes my Today screen pop-up every time after resuming from standby. Set the "prompt for a password" to several hours if you don't want to deal with entering one too often.

Clock missing from title bar...help anyone?

Hey I got my XDA Exec this morning which I'm really please about, been using it for a couple of hours but for some reason the clock has disappeared from the title bar in the today screen and I can't get it back!
Does anyone know what might have happened, about the only thing I've got installed is Pocket Plus 3.
Infact i've noticed that the volume icon is gone too, but if i click where it should be the pop-up appears for me to change the volume levels.
It's like there is something covering these two icons and it's driving me mad, having the time visible there is about one of the most useful things
This is a common problem
This happened to me too. It was caused by the O2 software. If you do a search on this site using the words "clock missing" there have been many posts on this subject and the solutions of how to remove the O2 software are posted too.
The O2 interface also seems to slow up the machine and cause a lot of freezing requiring a soft reset. My machine has been tons better since removing it.
If you decide that you would rather have the clock than the O2 software (and most people do) and decide to remove it, remember first of all to save your phone and GPRS setting to your filestore! This can save you a lot of time. If you like the 02 today screen theme then you could save this too.
Also I recommend that you make a backup first so that you can go back to how you are now if you need to.
Good Luck
Open the clock and you should find an extra tab at the bottom called - "More" select that and a new option appears Display the clock on the title bar in all programs.
Neither of those options worked, in the end I hard resetted the device and set it up in corporate mode I found using a PIN I got by just searching google! No more O2 Active anywhere, and I've got my clock back! I'd only had the device a few hours so luckily it didn't take too long to set everything back up how it was before hand The only thing I had to do was manually set up the GPRS connection again but that was simple enough since I already had all the settings saved

Screen Lock Application - any chance to lock automatically?

Hi, the T-Mobile Screen Lock Application is really useful, but I miss 1 feature: Auto Screen Lock after x seconds of inactivity, why? : When push emails or sms or notifications coming in, the device wakes up and screen goes on and if the screen was not locked manually before and if it's in my pocket (a lot of ands, I know...) keys are pressed randomly.
So happend to me yesterday, I called 7 randomly persons and I didn't noticed until the called me back and asked me if I'm crazy...
B.
You can put a password on your device that will lock the device after x sec. Then it will wake up, handle the call & still be locked for other functions. Omega One has got a 'Safe' as well. Gives you a nice clock & your appointments as well while the device is locked.
Cheers, M
oltp: Omega one's app is very nice. Have you tried resource hacking it to match your Today theme etc, or add warnings and stuff? It makes it even better!
V
Hi VJ,
Nope not yet, in fact I ditched all OO aps when I didn't have a BS rom. No I need to reinstall it & find the time to 'alter' One Pass.
Probably spending too much time in solving other people's rom, etc probs. But thanks for the reminder I completely forgot the hacking possibilities. Any tips/links where to find a description to it?
Cheers, m
oltp: Just load it up using any resource hacker and change them bitmaps.
Very easy but slightly hackery. I don't use it either because it screws with buttonmax and similar apps. They're aware of the problem but don't appear to have fixed it when I last tried it... nice app though.
V
Thank you V,
Will try it soon.
Thanx, i needed the same thing and forgot all about the password!
Just set to 0 mins and it will only lock on boot or when coming out of standby
/me is happy now!
Omega One's app is 1-pass?
At Omega One homepage tell that is not WM5 compatible!
Can expalin please?
Thanks

What is "Today timeout"??

I have a MDA Vario. In SETTINGS --> TODAY --> ITEMS tab, what is "Today timeout", which is set at "4 hr" by default?? Does anyone know pls? I do not see any reference to it in the manual. Thx.
Tones
I think that's the amount of time after which it will return to the today screen if you left it with an app open and didn't touch it.
i tried it last night by leaving a game running, but it was still there when i got up the next day. it does seem to be the function u described, mate. Anyone else have any ideas pls?
A game will certainly work differently as it will request permanent focus and fullscreen. Just try with a standard app like calendar...
well, it was only a simple solitaire card game, but nonetheless I will try standard one like you suggested. But if this "timeout" function really is to return to TODAY screen, what is the real use of it? to timeout in 4 hours? and the longest possible time option is 12 hours.
Doesn't it simply stop refreshing the today screen (ie the clock and other values)?
It still refreshes the clock when you put it into sleep mode. However, after a number of hours it always takes some time for the clock to jump to the correct time.
It is the idle time before the Today screen is shown.
It's near useless, I almost always keep my today screen on anyway, because who wants to wait 4hours to see it
Use my TodayButton app if you want quick access to the Today screen...
V
personally, I always return to the TODAY screen anyway by shutting down applications after i'm done with them. I just thought this "timeout" thing was a sophisticated and useful function, but it turns out to be quite the opposite. But i will never understand why anyone want to design it to timeout in HOURS and not in minutes.
I'm the same, I shut down apps and always leave it on the Today screen!

Doesn't the Red button do that anyway?
Nah, red button minimises apps to leave them running in the background (I think it actually just switches to the today screen). Some don't mind this, but for me, if I want the app open, I'll open it, and when I want it closed, I want it closed.
VJOkButt allows you to use the red button to minimse or close, and also properly close the phone to save around 3mb memory. But it does this sympathetically with the phone, so if you're in the phone, it hangs up, but otherwise it's a minimiser.

lolz
Morale of the story.... no one knows it. I always keep it disabled. So no big deal.
Had PDF softcopy of Reference Manual of my O2AL, and searched with no hint at all. Lets be it.....
I thought...
Guys,
I just stumbled upon this thread and thought it might be a good idea to get educated. I never knew it.
But this is what I thought - I thought it is the time slot to show appointments.
Means, if you chose a slot of 4 hours, and there are continuous meetings scheduled in your calender (and display of them enabled), then it would act like a rolling 4 hours window (read as slot).
Does this make sense? I never had so many appointmens, but always thought this was the use of it.
Comments please.

[Q] LumiRead and screen timeout

It is very annoying to tap screen every 2 mins, my screen timeout, when reading book. I usually end up flipping page or activating toolbar which cut off first and last 2 lines on page/s.
Is there any solution to this?

I bought Tasker on the market, and created a profile that starts and ends with LumiRead and sets the timeout to "never"

well
Lumiread should not time out screen on it's own - have you gone into the a500 system settings and increased the default time out to something over two mins? Would imagine this would help.
I do a lot of reading on my a500 - and Lumiread has never cut it to me. Try aldiko, free via the market - IMHO it makes lumiread look pretty bad.
Well, tried changing timeout in screen settings and the same thing happened. It did not timeout on its own but in time specified in settings.
Since I hate having two apps for same thing I was reluctant installing aldiko. Anyway, I tried it and the same thing happened, only this time display did not dim before turning off and after turning it on it was not locked (strange).
So, I create new profile (manually) by increasing timeout before I start reading; 10 mins would be enough time for me to read two pages before display turns off, and as my reading skills progress I might reduce it to 5mins as more permanent solution .
Than you for suggestions.
