considering rooting - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got a nexus 6p last week and considering rooting.
I am curious if rooting will effect use with Project Fi? I am currently using...
Are there any known issues, limitations or features that don't work on a rooted stock rom?
Does rooting break using encryption?
thanks in advance!

Been on Project Fi for over 3 month now and I’m rooted, encrypted and with Xposed and I have no problems whatsoever. My 6p works great everythings working just fine. The only thing about rooting your phone is that Android Pay may not work. But for me I need my root apps more then AP.
Welcome to Project Fi. Just in case you didn’t know but this is a must have app for Project Fi users.

Backup what you can.
Unlocking the bootloader will wipe the device.

Fi is fine with root. If you want AP to work use systemless. I'd suggest following Heisenberg's Guide.

Easiest Root for N915G

So, I was going to use Cf-Auroroot like I have for every other Samsung device I've got but apparently there's an issue with it for the N915G.
What I did was put the latest super su file (i used v2.40) on my external SD card and then in Odin flash the latest TWRP recovery from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-edge/general/easy-steps-stock-odin-n915tuvu1anjl-sm-t2943993 (you can also use the sd card fix from here too, flash in TWRP, just install supersu, then add another flash file and install the sd card fix).
Go to recovery mode and flash super su.
I found it had an error flashing cache but a factory reset fixed this so best done BEFORE setting everything up.
Let phone reset, set it up and you now have root access with a clean install of stock rom.
Happy days.
This worked fine for me and left out the step of flashing CF-Autoroot which wasn't needed.
You will still trip Knox.
I don't know if this will work flawlessly for you or for all models, especially if the bootloader is locked, but theoretically it should.
Good luck guys, happy flashing.
And HAPPY NEW YEAR...

If it didn't I don't know why.

You should not have many issues with 5.0.1. What you need to do after flashing the 5.0.1...you need to reset to factory setting. Im sure by now you know when upgrading..you still keep data from the kitkat. This may cause conflict and issues. At the moment the only issue i had is sometime i get that contact closed notifications. I have google this issue...seem like it happen to other phones to with early 5.0.1. For me im ok...cause it only happen very rarely...i hope a much later lollipop will fix this issues.

Got my SM-915G, and got it rooted and TWRP installed following you method. It is working with AT&T and I am getting LTE data speeds, but it is struggling on voice network. hardly any bars are visible on the signal strength icon.
Is there any solution?

Possibly flashing the modem and non-HLOS.bin for AT&T.
I can't really say as I live in Oz and have no problems with voice calls...
I do find that my bars don't tend to go over 3 or more than halfway but that could be due to where I live and the crappy coverage we get here... No problem with voice calls though...
I am not sure if I can install SM-N915A modem on 915G.
Can someone confirm if that is possible, if so, what version?
tell me one thing is xposed framework and freedom app now working on note edge 915G lollipop
Nope. Better stick with Kitkat if you intend to use Freedom and Xposed.

Unlocking Bootloader now trips SafetyNet

Its been reported that merely having an unlocked bootloader now trips safetynet. Google has officially turned their backs on developers and enthusiasts.
I never had a problem with xposed or magisk tripping safetynet; but an unlocked bootloader is by no means a security risk. So I'm not happy having to choose between snapchat and an unlocked bootloader.

Well RIP AP....
Pixel and now this, I guess Google is becoming Apple 2.0
can confirm, I have unrooted stock 7.0 as my primary on multirom and is tripping safetynet, no more AP for me I guess since I'm NOT locking the bootloader, nice play Google

IIRC chainfire DID warn us about this..saying if we keep trying to hide root, they'll keep trying to make it harder for us to do so.
Doing it to the pixel? Fine..but to a nexus phone? Kinda murders the whole selling point of Nexus.
Either way elgoog has been making some really odd decisions this past month or so.
I have an unlocked bootloader with everything stock and no root and I got past safety net for Pokemon Go.

Yeah, that one isn't a part of this as its not unlockable. I'm talking about the Google Pixel.
This f's people who just want to install the latest factory image too; non power users who don't root and just want the latest OS..considering you need an unlocked boot loader to flash the images.

By the way, does re-locking bootloader wipe data or internal? Factory image page says that "Locking bootloader will wipe the data on some devices. ".
Pretty sure on the n6, we wipe everything on both unlock & relock.

You can still customize. You just can't do crap that you probably shouldn't be worrying about anyway. Android pay is a sham, since your credit card has an RF chip in it that works on the same scanner... but ONE FEWER companies get to track all your purchases when you use it since it leaves google out of the loop.
Indeed; also as long as you log into Snapchat once before you install root, it seems to continue to work after root / magisk installation.

Amen.
I wonder what the hook is that it uses to check if the bootloader is locked...? It *must* go through the kernel, so maybe this is as simple as telling the kernel to LIE about it.
Well, that is simple conceptually, but not necessarily *easy* to implement.

No Data Connection Period? New Phone Needed?

I've been part of the g900v community since basically day one. I may not have posted much, but I have tried pretty much every rom posted here, as well as posting 2 or 3 of my own roms
Saturday night, my s5 lost data connection no matter what i did. Tried a factory reset, no data. Unlocked and rooted bootloader, still no data... no matter what i did, no data.
So, unless someone here has a fix idea, I'm looking for recommendations of a new device that can be rooted, bootloader unlocked and modified a lot of the same way (rom wise) as the s5. I did get the moto z droid running 7.0, but mine can't be bootloader unlocked or rooted, but i have 14 days to return it if i don't like it to swap it.
Any recommendations?
Restart from square one. Im in the same spot. I was able to restore an old backup of a stock pbp1 and service worked. But that isnt the soloution. I was running Mokee 7.1 and thats when it crashed. I've restarted from locking my bootloader again and going back from the beginning. I started here https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370
I had some hiccups gaining root, google helped a bit and roaming the forums.
Removing kingroot was hard, Step 2 worked here: https://www.droidmen.com/remove-kingroot-kinguser-with-supersu ......Supersume didnt..
Now im moving onto unlocking the BL again

Do any custom roms support ok google (Google assitant)?

I've searched and someone said last year it was an issue. I've tried two different rooted roms (One 9.0 and one 8.1) and neither will allow ok google to work. I'd just root stock but I need tasker wifi tether automation which doesn't seem to work on the rooted stock roms for some reason. Neither does secure settings.
Thanks

Not that I know of. Why are you hesitant to root? It's not hard. You just need to do your homework and follow instructions. We all had to start somewhere. Also, if something goes wrong, it's rare to really brick a phone. They can almost always be recovered.

There's no risk to rooting. Grab the MDM tool it's your always go to tool to bring phone back to stock if there's an issue.
I used to root for Adaway, Viper, and Substratum but with the theme engine now and Blokada (or my personal VPN) and most of my audio listening is not on this device I actually haven't rooted a OnePlus phone in almost a year. Keep in mind if you root you'll lose L1 provisioning (capped at [email protected] on YouTube TV which is a deal breaker for me) along with Netflix and other things that require Widevine DRM to play HD content. Also, having to update the ROM you gotta disable Magisk modules, disable substratum themes, flash the OTA, then reflash TWRP, reflash Magisk, re-enable all your modules and themes. At least this is how it was on the last round of OnePlus devices. Maybe I'm getting older but just simple flash OTA and reboot at my leisure and everything still just works...

Most apps can be light or dark theme.
You can also install DarQ from XDA Labs to dark theme more apps.
Quick Settings in the app store allows you to add a ton of more toggles to quick settings.

It's a bit old but you could try Andromeda from the play store and follow the instructions with substratum both installed and access to a PC worth a try couldn't shouldn't hurt
its pointless anyway
even on rotted OxygenOS most themes dont support it so there are always issues with themes
I prefer running custom AOSP ROMs as then themes work much better in terms of versions etc

Many packages are supporting it now. Liv Dark, Swift, Darc, Liv Light, Valerie. Def worth the few minutes to gain root access.

Given there's no TWRP support as long as nothing goes wrong I agree. If during a flash or if the phone randomly wants to glitch out causing a bootloop during normal usage you're sitting with a paperweight unless you're in front of a computer with ADB and your files available to jump start this device in fastboot. No TWRP and rooting and flashing the boot partition to gain root in most cases likely fine but you're playing with fire without a way to attempt to fix your device while on the go. Correct me if I'm wrong and I might reconsider my personal stance.
In addition, I love this device for the option to root, but the L1-->L3 downgrade in DRM provisioning is a partial deal breaker for my personal usage with YouTube TV. I like to watch sports and being restricted to [email protected] is awful. I could deal with the 480p component but the lack of 60 FPS hockey and football are motion blur central. Keeping it not rooted keeps it at [email protected] or [email protected]

Don't root if you have no idea what you're doing
But like everyone said previously, root is THE thing to do once you got an Android
There's no harm for your device, if you fail, you flash a whole firmware and youre good to go again
