So, I was going to use Cf-Auroroot like I have for every other Samsung device I've got but apparently there's an issue with it for the N915G.
What I did was put the latest super su file (i used v2.40) on my external SD card and then in Odin flash the latest TWRP recovery from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-edge/general/easy-steps-stock-odin-n915tuvu1anjl-sm-t2943993 (you can also use the sd card fix from here too, flash in TWRP, just install supersu, then add another flash file and install the sd card fix).
Go to recovery mode and flash super su.
I found it had an error flashing cache but a factory reset fixed this so best done BEFORE setting everything up.
Let phone reset, set it up and you now have root access with a clean install of stock rom.
Happy days.
This worked fine for me and left out the step of flashing CF-Autoroot which wasn't needed.
You will still trip Knox.
I don't know if this will work flawlessly for you or for all models, especially if the bootloader is locked, but theoretically it should.
Good luck guys, happy flashing.
And HAPPY NEW YEAR...

Exactly the same method... I believe Twrp 2.8.5.0 and Supersu 2.4.6 were what I used to root Lollipop...

If it didn't I don't know why.

You should not have many issues with 5.0.1. What you need to do after flashing the 5.0.1...you need to reset to factory setting. Im sure by now you know when upgrading..you still keep data from the kitkat. This may cause conflict and issues. At the moment the only issue i had is sometime i get that contact closed notifications. I have google this issue...seem like it happen to other phones to with early 5.0.1. For me im ok...cause it only happen very rarely...i hope a much later lollipop will fix this issues.

Mentioned locked bootloaders as this will work on other models too...
Got my SM-915G, and got it rooted and TWRP installed following you method. It is working with AT&T and I am getting LTE data speeds, but it is struggling on voice network. hardly any bars are visible on the signal strength icon.
Is there any solution?

Possibly flashing the modem and non-HLOS.bin for AT&T.
I can't really say as I live in Oz and have no problems with voice calls...
I do find that my bars don't tend to go over 3 or more than halfway but that could be due to where I live and the crappy coverage we get here... No problem with voice calls though...
I am not sure if I can install SM-N915A modem on 915G.
Can someone confirm if that is possible, if so, what version?
tell me one thing is xposed framework and freedom app now working on note edge 915G lollipop
Nope. Better stick with Kitkat if you intend to use Freedom and Xposed.

There probably won't be one. Loki has been patched, and looks to be permanent. Even DrJbliss said he doesn't think its possible now with the way they patched.
Its pretty safe to say the only way to get a recovery again will be to roll back.

That is not 100% accurate. I have the sprint version and can confirm that it IS possible to have TWRP on this phone with the latest kitkat firmware (4.4.2), the only problem is it breaks download mode, but there is a way to get it back as well and the devs are working on getting them both working at the same time. Additionally, I realize that the OP does not have a Sprint model phone, but if it is possible on one carrier, I would not say it's impossible on another carrier so there is hope.

I have no reason to lie, but you can check out this thread to see it for yourself. I have done this myself and can confirm that I had TWRP working with kitkat on my Sprint LG G2 variant phone. I have since went back to stock rooted because I did not like not having download mode, but as I said it has been done (for the Sprint variant atleast) so there is hope.
BTW. It should go without saying that you should NOT try this method unless you have the Sprint variant of the G2 as it will definitely not work with other carriers and will more than likely hard brick your device and even if you do have a Sprint variant make sure to read the instructions carefully and fully understand what you are doing before doing anything. You have been warned / advised.
Additionally, I am not a dev and I did not come up with or take any credit for this or any other guide. I am simply passing the information along.

I was under the impression that the OP wants to take the OTA, root and flash TWRP. That isn't possible. That part I'm 100% correct on. But the method you linked to for Sprint is available for all other variants I've seen so far, similar anyway. Including VZW. That's why I said roll back, you have to be on the Jelly Bean bootloader.
What's that mean? I cant get TWRP on my d802?

Hi,
I have rooted my S5 and want to enable the encryption.
But when I start the encryption it reboots after some seconds without encrypting.
I have unrooted the device and the encryption works well. Afterwards I have rooted again and then the deivice does not boot, so I had to reset.
Is there a way to encrypt a rooted device?

I think the phone might have to have all the knox files for the encryption to work properly.

That's odd. It must be related to root then.
I don't have any experience with encryption and I'm fairly new to Knox as well so I may not be much help. A brief search didn't yield any promising results for having both encryption AND root, sorry.

You can use wondershare mobilego to root the phone. The software has one-click root. This is the easiest way however the software also install a lot adds on your phone.
If you want to do the clean manual route...
1.You need to downgrade your phone to Kit-kat 4.4.2 NB1/NC1 .
2. Use towel root to root the phone.
3. Install safestrap or flash fire.
4. Flash the desire Lollipop rom via safestrap or flashfire.
You can find all the instruction and files in this post.
question after downgrading can i upgrade back to 5.0.1 or do i have to use a custom rom ?

Don't know much about magisk on i-337. . I am not sure whether you need a unlocked bootloader to use magisk. I saw magisk on zenfone 2 though. Then again zenfone 2 bootloader can be unlocked. All the i377 BL are locked. Only the initial one (ADB, MDL) could be exploitable (not unlock).

Then you better be on T-mobile
Most smart phone make for US came with locked bootloaders.
To avoid that I bought international version. The problem with international phone on ATT network is that you can not get 4GLTE signal for mobile data. You can get either 3G or 4G based on your phone. ATT told me that only phone make for ATT network could get the 4GLTE signal.
I heard international phone can get 4GLTE signal on T-mobile network.

Yes, I have remained rooted, but I ended up going back to stock G935A and then rooting again with that procedure. Personally, I was not getting the performance I was used to with the G935U as I was with the G935A with the root procedure.
Yes, there are some things that do not work with these eng.imgs that are being used to root the phones. There is NO Xposed for this one, Samsung Pay does not work, but I have been using Android Pay and it works just fine. As for the Bootloader, it is still LOCKED. There has not been any Unlocked bootloaders for the G935 or G930 so far and I don't think we will see it anytime soon.
As for Undoing, yes. There is a very simple way to go back to stock with Odin. In fact, about once a month, I return to stock just so I can get the latest security patch and then re-root my phone back to this way. I know it is somewhat of a pain, but with Titanium Back up I can get my phone back to running normally in a couple of hours.
Hope this helps...
It's not quite as fast, but if you are backing up and restoring to the same device, you can just use ADB. I still have a TiBu license, and use it on my Tab S2, but I have largely adapted to not having root on my S7 by taking advantage of basic ADB features.

What I meant was Xposed doesn't work on the current version of root using the eng.img. I have not tried using the NEW Xposed that is in THIS thread. I have looked at it but have not had a chance to run the zipped file and installing it. I know it works with MM as I had it working GREAT with MM and the eng.img with that version. I love Xposed and wish that was available for Nougat and N's root. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be fully implemented soon.

I tried this 4 times and failed. The problem is it just keeps rebooting (about every 45 to 60 seconds) after I flash the eng boot img. Im never able to run adb commands. If I start from a clean slate I can't even make it past the setup screens to enable debugging.
I'm reaching out to you because you succeeded with the same model SM-G935U
So I'm just seeing if you have any insights. My phone should be the same as yours. Only difference is mine came with 7.0 preinstalled. Maybe an earlier firmware? But that doesn't make sense because people are, to my understanding, using the eng boot with recent firmware.
I'll repost in the root thread if I need to but thought I'd see if you have anything to offer. Thanks

I seem to remember the constant rebooting on the U-Firmware also. I too kept trying and it finally took. I think I would take the OTA from the server and try to install the eng.img with Odin. When you do this, does Odin give you any errors? Or does it succeed at the installation?

Thanks. No Odin works perfectly whether I flash eng boot or stock.
I looked at the root guide for Sprint and the process is a lot more involved. I believe he boots to recovery twice and wipes cache plus factory reset twice. He also stresses to get the root.bat run quickly to avoid bootloop.
Might be worth a shot but the process of running Odin, getting back to stock and restoring all my data winds up being close to a few hours so It'd be very helpful to find someone with the same issue as me who was able to resolve it.
Here is Stock Oreo directly from Samsung for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 via Odin.

Don't forget to factory reset and clear the caches via Recovery after you flash.
Enjoy!
Can I flash this onto my G930A?
is it necessary to factory reset??? Something that I've always liked about samsung is that I update using Odin and the apps and confs still the same... but if I have to factory reset, then I will lost everything...

All Samsung's have multiple ways of backing up and restoring. All you have to do is back up using Samsung cloud and when you start your phone it will ask you if you want to restore your phone and then everything will automatically come back to your phone. Factory reset fixes boot loop and other issues

I have an unlocked phone, I'm not sure how atnt works with other Sims or with their phones. I previously had atnt firmware but then switched to TMobile since I have TMobile sim

Yeah I went ahead and flashed it. Works fine, better signal than on the ATT software and all features work

Great, I also found my signal to be better as far as staying connected is concerned. At one point my data kept going out on the atnt firmware and I had to keep restarting the phone or mess with the Wi-Fi calling. I haven't had any problems since I flashed this and plus 8 is faster than 7 so I'm excited to not have to mess with this phone anymore and just leave it up to ota updates.

Which sim card do you have and which carrier provides the phone because then you might have to flash back to 7 and use your carriers official firmware or flash your carriers official 8 firmware.
I have a SM-G930U. I wasn't expecting this to work...and it did flawlessly. Another surprise I got was flashing this firmware fixed my dm-verity issues. Thanks a lot for this thread. It gave a new life to a phone gathering dust on a shelf.

OEM unlock is an option in Developer Options. Has that always been there?

It's there but it doesn't work. It's just a toggle button that would come with most Android builds for the phones that actually have unlocked bootloader.

If there was root before (there is), then I'm pretty sure it will soon be available for Oreo too. I don't see why there wouldn't be unless those individuals who created or found the engineering kernel for MM AND N, aren't around to help out again. If not, back to 6.0 it goes.
HI, Now I'm on a custom rom with Nougat. Sim's carrier is Orange(UE). If I flash this Official Oreo version the phone will become Locked, right? Any idea how to unlock it, no charges? Thanks!
Thanks for the upload. I was trying to see if SamMobile had this up yet but they did not have it up when I checked. I have the MetroPCS variant and it did have 8.0 available on SamMobile already. I am switching from MetroPCS to T-Mobile so this will be perfect to get my phone 100% ready.
