Android OS battery drain - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No matter what I do I get this drain. Android os is keeping awake for 4 hrs in 12 hrs of sitting in my car. Apparently instead of dozing it says don't go to sleep instead drain the battery. I'm using amplify and app ops xposed to stop wakelocks even. Running pure nexus. Doesn't matter if its fresh install or not. Any ideas?

root and install better battery stats

Well you clearly have something waking your system. Though too much wakeblocking is just as bad. Perhaps try something else, like greenify. Most likely some rogue app.

Better battery stats didnt really tell much It seems to only happen if WiFi is on and not connected so I'll try turning it off and see. I pretty much removed everything from amplify last night and turned off WiFi and there was no drain. I'm getting amazing battery life today tho. But no dozing so I'll see tonight I guess.

If that's the case, you probably have an RX wakelock, and flashing a custom kernel [kylo for example] has that as a simple wakelock toggle you can enable.
Or block it by other means.

Thanks kylo was my next thing to try But I just wrote a tasker profile to automate WiFi on off that should take care of it. If that fails kylo is next. Thanks a bunch

No problem, also:
Kylo Downloads, since renderserver isn't being updated.
Also also: when in the kernel, there is a bug with all 4 wlan toggles, make sure it shows up as 'disabled' [toggle to the left] to have it enabled.

You know I had this kind of drain yesterday.

Honestly Android OS is the worst kind of drain because its hard to find a smoking gun. It's just the OS doing something we don't know.. While Facebook had its wakelocks, the thing is Facebook itself is not draining that much. Something else is going on.

Only advice I have is make sure searching for open WiFi isn't checked, under location make sure the scanning options are unchecked and kylos kernel seems to be helping as suggested in previous posts using the wake lock preventions.

Did you know... (bln)

Did you know that with regards to BLN, it actually drains battery by an noticeable amount. I switched to speedmod (w/o BLN) and seem to get much better battery life. Previously I was trying various kernel to determine the issue with the higher than average (the standard being custom roms) battery drain. This might be helpful to you guys.
Yes it does, with the current implementation it does not prevent the phone from going back to sleep state unlike how it was done on the S1.

Yeap, it is because of the wakelock issues. I've tried setting a time-out for the BLN which is suppose to help return the device to deepsleep but seems like it doesn't work.
I have noticed this as well. Can anyone confirm whether or not simply uninstalling the app will resolve the issue, or would I have to flash a different kernel that doesn't support bln at all to resolve the battery usage issue?
Uninstalling the app, and not using bln will stop the battery drain.

Hope this is true, cause I don't use BLN although the kernel i use has it included.

Yes. Try uninstaller BLN control app. See if that helps. If your battery does not improve by a noticeable amount, I think your best bet would be to try to flash another kernel such as speedmod.
Yup, hate BLN myself actually its a massive battery drainer. Never use it, dont really see a point to it either as for me the phone is in my pocket most of the day.

Bln only drains the battery when it is active (it keeps it out of deep sleep)
you can see this by pressing the home button and the phone instantly wakes up, when the phone is in deep sleep there is a "delay" when you wake it up...
This is why bln for the sgs2 it is highly suggested you get the pro bln app so you can schedule it to time out so the phone can go back into deep sleep (if you never clear the notification)
If you have the free version then it will keep the phone awake until you clear the notification
If you have a kernel that is bln compatible and don't want to use it...then either disable it in the app or unistall the bln app.
the bln functions won't work wiithout the app.

I am in WAKELOCK HELL

I'll start by saying that the attached pictures say it all folks.
I'm simply at a complete loss as to how my phone can be so awake ALL the time.
If anybody could give me ANY insight as to why it might be the case, I'd REALLY appreciate it.
Also, I can post my alarmdump.txt if anybody wants to see it.
Again, any and ALL help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask me for any more info that might be of use in diagnosing the problem.
That NYC map app seems to be the culprit. As well as the Google Search widget, for some reason.
Uninstall the app, remove the widget, reboot and see if it's much better
Phones with insomnia... now I've seen it all.

Well I've frozen the default ADW launcher that CM7 comes with. I'm pretty sure I took off all homescreen icons and widgets before I switched the default to Zeam.

im also curious about modem fastdormancy... i froze it because it was a wakelock culprit, but am getting really fast battery drain as well. not sure exactly what modem fastdormancy does tho

So basically, Modem Fast Dormancy = do not freeze. In my understanding, it has to do with the radio and disabling it when not in use, or something to that affect. I haven't studied it, but that's a quick 10 second synopsis from reading that article. I would stay away from disabling it.

What about the wakelocks for Event Log Services?
Does anybody know if there's a way to find out exactly what that is, and if there's anything I can do about it?
Thanks for the input so far guys I REALLY appreciate, and little by little I think things are working out.

The thing is, he might have good battery life compared to others but his screen was barely on, he shouldn't be having all those wake locks. I have a similar amount too. If we could get this settled our 1 day battery life might turn into 2 days which would be amazing. I'm sure many people's phones are like this.

Yup bro this is exactly it.
It might be good battery life- but I'm not using my phone at all.
After unfreezing Modem Fastdormancy I've definitely got less unexplained blue in the "awake" time graph. I also froze ADW and that seemed to help.
Thing is, there is still lot of mysterious chunks when my phone is awake.
BetterBatteryStats says Alarm Manager and Event Log services are to blame (top two- represent a substantial percentage of the partial wakelocks and thus time awake).
I'm about to terminal emulator dumpsys my alarmdump.txt, but is there a similar solution for Event Log Services that will allow me to see EXACTLY what's putting it at the top? Only clue it gives is that it's apparently "Google Services."
Past that I've got no clue what it's pointing to.
If I get the Event Log Services fixed, I'd venture to say that would solve a LOT of problems for me.
Thank you guys for everything so far. You laid out some really good and interesting ideas- ones that I definitely wouldn't have thought of.
I'm very, very appreciative, and if it's not too much trouble, bros, KEEP IT COMING!
Ultimately, I want OTHERS to be able to reference this thread in their quest for a better Atrix, and maybe even a better android phone in general!

If I get my alarm manager dump, will that have any or all of the things contributing to the Event Log Services wakelock?
Like I've been saying, it looks like all I need to solve this is some breakdown of the Event Log Services to see what's putting it at the top.

I honestly always had battery issues with cm7 keeping the phone awake. I switched back to Alien ROM an now my battery life is back to normal, around 42hours. I also saw great improvement when I uninstalled Watchdog while I was on cm7 and so thus I have never reinstalled it again.
Well,
Due to this post I checked my Atrix and saw that it wont go to sleep as well, and stay practically always awake. I started using AntTek App manager to freeze some apps that worked all the time (mainly Facebook and an israeli VOD app) and the phone started to go in sleep. I dont know how it will affect the battery life (which is about 16 hours from 100% to ~5%, with data always open), but I will test it for now and report once I have some news...
BTW Im running CM7-Ba2tF, with faux123 enhanced 1.0 Ghz Kernel, and UV.

So many things could be draining your battery. You need to provide more data in order to troubleshoot.
Use BetterBatteryStats and/or wakelock detector (both in Google Play) to identify apps causing wakelocks. Then Google those wakelocks for possible solutions. Out posts screenshots of your wakelocks here or in a wakelock thread.
Plus provide details of what ROM, kernel, and radio you're using.

I just installed once the app, but can´t remember well how it exactly work.
It is not too hard. Just install app and then wait for a full cycle. What this app does, is just monitoring all the processes on your phone. When you make a full battery cycle, it detects which processes are awake and it shows them on the wakelock screen as well as the name of the process.
Sometimes, it will show crazy names or not so conventional names, but better to make a screenshot of the overall wakelocks and then the detail of the major wakelock. I think this was on top of others.

[Q] Help With Battery Drain

In the past week or so, I've noticed that my battery is draining unusually fast. I will take the phone to bed with me (I use it as an alarm clock) at 100% battery and I can wake up 7 hours later with it at 82%. When I look at my battery information, I see steady, solid drain over that time, with the biggest offender being Google Services. When I look in Wakelock Detector, I see the most usage (though seemingly not a ton) by Android System.
I found some tips on using Wakelock Terminator in Xposed to filter some things from Google Play Services from triggering wakelock, and I was optimistic, but it didn't seem to help.
Any advice?

Are you on a stock rom? Did you try greenify? It's on the play store. It kills the apps background services and the app itself until you start the app or the app is started by another app or service. Soon as the app os no longer needed it is turn back off. This program does not freeze apps it prevents them from running until needed.
Ah, sorry, I should have mentioned my rom and such. I'm running ForceROM, a relatively older version (maybe 2.3?), since I never felt the need to update.
I haven't tried Greenify. Haven't actually heard of that one before. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the tip.

Try a custom kernel like KToonsez in addition to Greenify. It's amazing what you can end up doing with that kernel
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
ForceROM includes Ktoonsez kernel. For the last 8 months or so, I've had great battery life. This is a sudden and recent change, which I'm assuming to be caused by an update of some Google app (such as Play Services).
How do I use Greenify? Or do I just install it and it does magic?

I believe that installing Greenify might have done it. Battery usage looks much better today. I'll do a real test tonight when I get it charged to 100% before bed.
Well, I'll be...
I think that the problem is wifi. When I'm at home, I'm on wifi, and the battery is constantly draining. When I'm not at home, and on mobile data, the battery is well-behaved.

Some apps can be setup to sync over WiFi only instead of 3G/4G data. but you have to check what apps would be the culprit. I know Google play, dropbox's picture upload feature can be set to download/upload/update over WiFi instead of data. But the only way to know is to see what apps connect over WiFi.
WiFi is suppose to give you better battery life since its signal is usually nearby and your phone doesn't have to use more power to find a better signal like it does with 3g/4g. I know for me it does since there are very few towers in the middle of the dessert.

No, I use Swiftkey.
So, interesting twist to this saga. Leaving wifi off takes away the solid blue bar on the battery screen, but I still see the same level of battery drain (about 18% overnight). Very intriguing.

Sounds like you're losing power to things syncing over wifi. Maybe try just giving it a week and watching it to see if it settles down. Google play sometimes settles down on its own. I also vote to check out greenify. With the donation package you can work wonders at calming down power hungry apps, even system apps.

My situation has suddenly taken a turn for the much worse. I don't know what's going on. I haven't added anything new or changed any settings since installing Greenify a while back. Now, the battery is just tanking. I got up to 100%, ran Battery Calibration and now, about 2.5 hours later, I'm at 82%. Could this just be a problem with the battery itself? Do I need to replace it?

Honestly there are a few days where the battery life suddenly drops dramatically. I've experienced this on unrooted mf9, mk2, and nae. Give it some time and see if battery life comes back up. You can reboot the phone to kill a rouge app that might be the cause.

There definitely do seem to be days where battery is worse than others. And I do typically try to reboot when I see it acting too squirrelly. I'll just keep keeping an eye on it. Weird-ass phone...

kernel keeping phone awake?

Recently I started experiencing bad battery drain (13% over night) and I noticed my kernel has been keeping my phone awake. I did a factory reset without restoring a back up and still the same thing.
Can anyone take a look at my screen shot and help me figure out a solution?

Recently I started experiencing bad battery drain (13% over night) and I noticed my kernel has been keeping my phone awake. I did a factory reset without restoring a back up and still the same thing.
Can anyone take a look at my screen shot and help me figure out a solution?

Try using CPU spy and check if the drain is due to the phone not going deep sleep ?

It says 99% deepsleep when I ran it. Also I got a notification that this app was made for older android systems. I am assuming it still works correctly?

Yeah it works , try updating to latest firmware as they have improved battery drain , you could turn off AOD , put some apps to sleep in the settings that you don't use and optimize battery usage for them. i was told Mobile Data consumes alot of battery , I'm getting 2% drain for the night unless I leave some downloads.

I am on the latest firmware and I have done everything in the original battery optimization guide by corvo who is now gone. I also have tweaked all my settings for max battery and turned off mobile data. Forgot to mention these issues are with all battery saving tweaks in mind.

Hmmm still says my deepsleep is fine I haven't really been using my phone. I did notice that my CPU does not idle at 300 while screen is on. I am assuming this is normal.
Uh the screenshots bugged I'll reupload.

Strange, guessing you haven't just left the phone untouched for 18 hours!

I have not. I have literally no idea why the phone is acting this way. I also don't know why my battery stats are not working on the app.
Also idk if this information will help my phone is a snap dragon 855 US variant.
I might try another factory reset. Could you give me a safe to disable list? Perhaps I could try just disabling little pieces at a time and see what happens. Maybe I uninstalled an important service or something.
For example I completely removed wellbeing from my device. Idk if it is important etc or had a role in certain services.

Sure, I have the exynos so that might explain why cpu spy works for me.
Google battery historian (there is a good reddit sub that explains how to use it) which might help identify some issues
I've attached my disabled list, just be aware that I have a 3rd party tracking app so I wouldn't recommend removing the find my device unless you have an alternative

Just so you know, CPU Spy and CPU Spy Reloaded don't work correctly on Snapdragi. S10's.
Happened to me using only mobile data also. Gsam showed a higher than average held awake time as well. This current battery cycle has been my worst stat in regards to sot.View attachment 4767231View attachment 4767233

I got over 10 hours once , the only time I charged to 100% and used to 15%. Second day of purchase. I normally do 80-40 or there abouts.
But we're her to discuss saving battery and wondering why the LTE isn't as efficient perhaps as would it should be.

I used the command that the app tells me to use. Does gsam work on exynos?
I emailed them two weeks ago, never got a response back.
