no custom recovery after flashing UHOJ4 bootloader - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I had several problems with custom rom, so I went back to stock ROM (latest MOB version) to start everything new.
Now I got the problem that it is not possible to flash CWM or TWRP again (tried different versions to flash with odin). I also tried to get back to UHOL2 bootloader and modem, bootloader is now UHOL2 but also custom recovery not working.
Any ideas how to get TWRP working again?
Thx
Jürgen

Can you root it?
Then you might be able to use flashify to flash the recovery.img

Uncheck auto-reboot before flashing TWRP trough Odin.

used CF Auto root - Phone Info says that root is working
which recovery.img should I try - CWM or TWRP doesn't matter for me

TWRP. CWM is outdated.

Uncheck auto-reboot before flashing TWRP trough Odin and removing battery was the solution!
Thx

Selecting auto reboot after flashing twrp causes the stock recovery to overwrite twrp and this is why the phone should be booted into twrp right after flashing.

Why can't I install a custom recovery?

As per title, I'm trying to install a different recovery via Odin, and it seems to install it correctly but when I try to go into recovery it just reboots? I've tried twrp, and various cwm releases but they all do the same. Even the stock recovery now does it once I'd given up and installed that again? Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Turns out Odin 3.07 wasn't working properly, worked fine with 3.04 instead.
i've found Odin3 v1.85 to be very stable as well for flashing recoveries

[Q] have i lost root forever ? help !

all.
I have an i9505 on 3 UK that has been rooted for over 6 months. I've been running the excellent TW based Echo Rom but wanted to try an ASOP rom but quickly wanted to revert.
I tried to restore my Nandroid but this failed and screwed up the phone (dont ask)so back to ODIN and i flashed back to stock 4.4.2 firmware for the UK via Sammobile (NG8)
Now back to square 1 so attempted to reroot with CF Autoroot again via ODIN. all show pass and i get the black screen on the phone with the red android logo and line stating stock recovery restored. I then used ODIN to flash Philz recovery again shown as Pass, however when i try to get into recovery i get some small white text on the bkack background that is there too briefly to read before the phone reboots as normal.
The Su superuser app is there but states the Su binary is outdated and the phone has no root access.
Ive read a few methods to get round this but they all seem to follow the same process ive tried a few times now.
The Rom for Echoe is auto root so id have thought if i could get to recovery somehow i could just flash this ?
Any one any views or have i screwed up for good ? .
You will be fine.
If you want to flash a custom rom anyway the shortest way would be to just flash the custom recovery. You don't need root for that.
Uncheck auto-reboot before you flash the recovery and it should work.

so i reflashed Philz recovery and unchecked auto reboot. This then gives me PASS in ODIN. I guess then i unplug and try and activate recovery - but still nothing...it just boots up normally ?

What is the model descriped when you are in download mode?

GTI9505...(Bootloader i9505xxegng8)
Originally I tried philz_touch_5.15.8-i9505.tar.md5
and then updated to philz_touch_6.23.9-i9505.tar.md5 with no avail.
Try redownloading it. If you say that if passes, then it should just work.
If it still fails then try TWRP. Uncheck auto-reboot before flashing.
Could it be connected to me flashing a generic unlocked UK firmware on a 3 UK handset ?
That's sorted it ! Flashed CWM recovery and am now running Echoes v28.
Thanks for the help. I was really panicking for a while.
I wont be changing roms for a while but I guess if I did I won't lose root ?

[Q] Unable to install Custom Recovery

Hello,
I am facing weird problem, I am not able to install custom recovery, I have tried almost everything.. nothing helped.
I am still getting stock recovery..I have tried to flash it via Odin, via some apps, unfortunatelly nothing worked.
My Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505 is running KK 4.4.2.
Any idea?
Thank you.
I had this problem too. keep flashing cwm recovery through the app (needs root I think). and reboot into recovery, once you get cwm you can flash a custom rom or another recovery like twpr or philz.
s4 i9505 stock KK
I have that problem too. I have stock KK 4.4.2 XXUGNG8 updatet ota. When i try to flash flashable zip file cwm of philz or twpr i get some error like:
E:footer bad
Mds check
Something like that and cant flash it. I tryed with odin but no luck. Does anyone have same problem?
I had this problem to
I fixed it by checking te root options.
If u use a root app, make sure it gives always root acces.
After this, install a custom recovery rom
After that you'll have no problem installing a custom ROM
Good luck.

But my phone is not rooted, its new, with stock recovery, knox 0x0 still....
Have any idea?
Ok, but what if my phone is not rooted, how am I supposed to root it? When I tried CF-Auto-Root my phone started to reboot randomly during the phone call.
I have found one solution, but I am not sure if it works, it says that if you are flashing custom recovery via odin, you have to take out the battery after the flash is done so you won't allow your phone to restart and rewrite the recovery back to stock. Have anyone heard about it?
No, no idea.
Thats crappy.
Only know how I fixed it

Just uncheck auto-reboot before you flash the recovery. That will fix your problem.
I have tried it, but it didn't help still looking for solution, is there any way how to RENAME RECOVERY RESTORE FILES so I can finally flash custom recovery? (non-rooted phone)
OK, so the solution that worked was simple and I have already mentioned it, you have to take out you battery on samsung galaxy s4 logo, before it reboots.
My solution
Hi I had the same problem too,
I solved it this way: (My phone was rooted)
Download the .zip file from the recovery you want (I used CWM 6.0.4.7)
Next download 'SGS4 flasher' from the playstore.
SGS4 flasher needs root (I think) andyou can flash your recovery through that app.
Next boot into the recovery and you should probably end up in your custom revovery every time now.
If you don't end up in your custom recovery, download ROM manager and then choose the option boot into recovery.
This worked for me at least

flashing troubles

I'm having trouble flashing my P8lite with a custom rom, every rom I try twrp tells me it's for hi6210sft and my device is a p8litekirin.
Anyone know a fix for this, or point me in the direction of a rom that does work with p8litekirin?
(I can flash it with a stock rom but then I'd need to install TWRP again, as somehow latest stock firmware seems to overwrite and keeps overwriting custom recovery at every attempt I tried to install. Needed to do a rollback via adb to get twrp working again)
Thanks in advance
First of all before flashing any custom ROM on this device flash B896 first.
It's normal for the custom recovery to be replaced with stock one when you flash stock firmware.
After you flashed B896, reboot the phone into bootloader mode aka fastboot, flash twrp and then try to flash a custom rom of your choice.

When u flash new TWRP first time ,backup your efs (imei, modem).
Second with TWRP 2.8.7.0 u can only flash stock Samsung rom that have aroma support.
Only TWRP 3.2.3.0, this is the latest can flash Oreo ,pie ,nougat roms without issue. But remember u can't flash Samsung roms with this and u have to go back to twrp 2.8.7. Then go back to 3.2 if u wanna flash pie ect roms
Hi all
I can successfully flash twrp-2.8.7.0-hlte-4.4.img.tar and boot into recovery.
But later TWRP,s dont boot.
JJEgan says to flash 2.8.70 and if you need a later twrp flash 2.8.7.0 then through TWRP flash later TWRP.zip.
Question is where can i get a zip of the latest TWRP. The official releases are either img or tar
Thanks

The Twrp are always .img.tar or .img or even apk from play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.twrp.twrpapp. Anyway, i flashed twrp 3.2.3.0 from 2.8.7.0 ( the same one you had ) using Odin 3.11.1 without a single problem! Mybe the problem is just the Odin's version you used, have a look here too to better understand https://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-install-twrp-recovery-using-odin/. I hope you can solve it, good luck.
Thanks
When using 2.8.7.0 to flash latest TWRP.img, did you flash to boot or recovery? I get those choices after i select the file to flash. I assume recovery, right?
************ - -UPDATE - -*****************
Flashed img to recovery. All good, said flashing successful . . .but
Tried to reboot to new recovery but got the same boot loop.
Flashed 2.8.7.0 again using ODIN and 2.8.7.0. booted up just fine.
Re flashed 3.2.3.0 from 2.8.7.0. Again the same boot loop
Went back to 2.8.7.0 using ODIN. Booted up.
no idea what to do next
Thanks
I have same issues towards my hlte, twrp ver release later than what you indicated causes recovery boot loops, only 2.8 works. I cant even install custom rom due to unupdated twrp support.

You need to read first.
TWRP cannot flash Aroma based roms after 2.8 as per multiple posts .
Later android based roms use later TWRP 3 versions all posted .
