Why can't I install a custom recovery? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As per title, I'm trying to install a different recovery via Odin, and it seems to install it correctly but when I try to go into recovery it just reboots? I've tried twrp, and various cwm releases but they all do the same. Even the stock recovery now does it once I'd given up and installed that again? Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Turns out Odin 3.07 wasn't working properly, worked fine with 3.04 instead.

i've found Odin3 v1.85 to be very stable as well for flashing recoveries

Have you tried Rom Installer from the Play Store? That's how I installed CWM 3 times now in the past week without any issues. It also has twrp. Give that a shot.
READ the OPs on the recoveries.
There should be NO issue in installing a recovery.
Odin is your best friend.
AND make sure you completely turn off your phone and NOT use a 'rebooter' app to enter download mode.
Surely if you take some time you'll get one installed.
I know odin is my friend but for some reason it not working. If i go into recovery after using odin for twrp it says not a authorized rom by samsung. I tried so many way and aas working on my phone for over 5 hours yesterday and nothin
Are you running Odin (3.07 or 3.09) 'As administrator'?
You must on Vista, Win7 or Win8.
Are you placing the recovery .tar in the PDA slot? and unchecking F.Reset as suggested in many recovery install posts?
If the TWRP recovery you are attempting to somehow install is not working why not try another recovery like Philz CWM
You MUST shut off your phone completely. Go into Download mode then connect to you PC that has Odin running (as admin). Start the flash (uncheck the F.Reset), let it finish then power off your phone by holding the power button.
Somewhere somehow you are not doing something correctly. Do some more reading if necessary I have NEVER had installing recoveries fail using Odin (though sometimes I have had to do it a couple times - missing that 'don't reset' caceat in some of the discussions; should have read through all first.)
Im using odin 3.09 on window 7. Ill try phils cwm.

Can't install recovery on SM-T330NU

I tried installing almost all recoveries under T330 and T330NU but Odin keeps reporting as fail. I have tried Odin 3.09 and further without any hope. I even tried using another PC, installing drivers, and ,any versions of Odin but report fail. When I try to boot up the device it says Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again. Kies and Kies 3 don't recognize my device. Oh and Stock ROM from sammobile and the one provided here in the general forum also report FAIL right after aboot. Am I hard bricked?

Russ, no you're not bricked, you have a flash that failed in odin, and if i understand it correctly you now have an instruction alive in your cache that executes at reboot resulting in kicking you back to that particular message/state in odin. Succeeding in a recovery or boot.img flash should break it out of that "loop". what changes have you made to your device that odin flashes are now failing? Also , are you using the factory provided cable?

I am using factory cable and have use other USB cables that are verified working. What I did was flash TWRP from sub77 and then tried to flash stock rom because it was being buggy. That is when the problem started and I cant go past the message. Although I can now access Download mode but when I try to boot up normally or to recovery I receive that message.

Okay download mode is good, flash the last known working recovery that you were using. Remember to DESELECT the auto restart option in odin.
when the flash is done [res-ok] etc. , force reboot to recovery and attempt a restore of your associated backup. Meaning if your existing backup was made with an older known working version of TWRP you must use that version. If Philz, then Philz.
Odin's later newer version is required to flash the LP 5.1.1 update for the sm-t330nu. see @thisisapoorusernamechoice 's thread for instruction.

no custom recovery after flashing UHOJ4 bootloader

Hi,
I had several problems with custom rom, so I went back to stock ROM (latest MOB version) to start everything new.
Now I got the problem that it is not possible to flash CWM or TWRP again (tried different versions to flash with odin). I also tried to get back to UHOL2 bootloader and modem, bootloader is now UHOL2 but also custom recovery not working.
Any ideas how to get TWRP working again?
Thx
Jürgen
Can you root it?
Then you might be able to use flashify to flash the recovery.img

Uncheck auto-reboot before flashing TWRP trough Odin.
used CF Auto root - Phone Info says that root is working
which recovery.img should I try - CWM or TWRP doesn't matter for me
TWRP. CWM is outdated.
Uncheck auto-reboot before flashing TWRP trough Odin and removing battery was the solution!
Thx
Selecting auto reboot after flashing twrp causes the stock recovery to overwrite twrp and this is why the phone should be booted into twrp right after flashing.

Need help flash TWRP thru ODIN....

Hey guys. I'm trying to update my TWRP recovery but now I get the yellow triangle when to put the phone into recovery and lock icon before booting. I'm currently running 7.1.1 octos rom. The phone can boot fine but I don't have any working recovery right now. I tried using odin to flash several tar twrps but it constantly fails. I've used several cables too and 2 pc's to rule out connection problems but still the same. I'm out of ideas right now. I don't want to go flashing back to stock rom if I can get a working recovery thru odin. Thank you....
P.S. I tried to update my TWRP supposedly to 3.1. . . as it is preferred for flashing lineage oreo rom that's when my recovery goes bad.
Try reinstalling the TWRP that was working. It seems like the new TWRP isn't too compatible with our phones on the MDL bootloader. You might have to ODIN back to stock to fix it.
