So I got my Nexus 4 and overall I love it. It was a nice upgrade from the Galaxy Nexus. 2 issues im having though are
1. The vibrate seems really week. Much weaker than the Galaxy Nexus. Its so weak, if I lay the phone down flat on a table I cant hear it vibrate. I even have an app installed to make it vibrate longer.
2. My led light doesnt seem to work. I installed light flow and nothing. It worked fine on the Galaxy Nexus.
I dont know if I should try and return it to google for another one simply for the vibrate issue or what.
I can confirm the weak vibration. I had a G2 which I could hear rattle against the table. N4 is nowhere near as powerful.
the vibration intensity of the LG Optimus G variants are also the same. i have noticed that Samsung makes the best motors for this function. HTC/LG/Moto appear to use the same, or similar, motor.
The vibrate is really bad. Its basically useless. I just might disable it. I cant get any of the LED notification apps to work. I tried trusty light flow and nothing. The only time the LED works is when I press the option to test it and then its only 1 color.
Ok so an app called sms popup was preventing light flow from working for some reason. I uninstalled it and now light flow works as it should. An FYI if anyone does a search
First time I've owned a phone built by LG and the vibration really is pathetic.
Yeah, I can't feel anything either. :/
I am disappointed with the vibration as well, I can live with it though. I have not had issues with flow light, in fact it's a great app to allow me to set vibration reminders in custom intervals

I'm disappointed in the weak vibration..no tingling sensation in my pants
Wondering about this as well; the vibrate actually works fine when I've got the N4 in a pocket but when it's on a table or desk, I can't hear/feel it at all. One thing I've noticed is that if I can get one of the longer edges to touch the desk, the vibrate seems much stronger on the edges of the N4 (no bumper here). When it's just face up the vibration just isn't strong enough through the back of the device to notice.
I've read other posts in this forum where people feel like the N4's vibration is actually stronger than the GNex. Is it possible that something needs to be replaced in these devices with weak vibration motors?
I actuallyl iked the vibration on the N4.
Using a custom kernel such as Francos increases the vibrate intensity.

I highly recommend flashing Franco's kernel. Fixes the vibration, improves performance, improves battery life and improves the colours on the display.
The weak vibrate is because the nexus 4 uses a linear oscillating vibration motor instead of a counter weighted rotational motor. A linear oscillating motor produces crisper, smoother, and quieter vibrations, but it isn't clanky, rattly, or annoyingly gritty sounding like a counterweighted motor used in most other phones.

Confirmed, when I hold the buttom of the phone standing up to the desk, the vibration actually goes to the desk.

Well, at least it isn't as strong and loud as the one in my iPhone. That sure was annoying.

This is good information to know. Upon unboxing my N4 I definitely felt that the N4's vibration was DIFFERENT. When I say different, I meant in a good way, it just feels more real and thats the only explaination i could say but the way you worded it was just what I was trying to say but could never think of the words.
I disliked my old phones' vibration where they rattle and sounds like a car motor.

Definitely agree. I really like the way the N4 vibrates, but I just wish I was able to notice it when it's on a flat surface. Figured it had something to do with a difference in motor; glad to know I'm not crazy!
I agree about the vibration, almost useless (I find the maximum ringtone in my pocket on the street to be too quiet too).
Lightflow works with no problems for me, did you enable it in the "accessibility" settings?
I like the vibration on this phone a lot better than my old gnex

As an owner of a S2 i couldn't disagree more
One of the few things that's really annoying me about this phone is the haptic motor. It feels so cheap in comparison to other phones I've had. When it's vibrating for a text message or a phone call it's just fine, but when it's used for haptic feedback or typing it has this rattle/crackle sound that it makes that is super annoying. I think it has something to do with it being used for short bursts of feedback. I've toyed around with feedback duration during typing, but still get it. Do I just have a defective phone, or is this something other people experience too?
Really? It's the opposite for me. I find the vibrate a little too strong/loud when receiving texts etc, but feedback while using the keyboard and unlocking the screen feel really good to me.
I'm glad to have a strong vibration. Half the time I could not feel my G2 when it vibrated.
For texts, I love this vibration as it's not as hardcore as my Nexus 6. That one aggravated the sh*t out of me. As for the crackling sound, I just turned the vibrate on for SwiftKey, and I indeed noticed it too. I used to love the keyboard vibration, but I turned it off after a while. I'm glad I did, because that crackling would aggravate me to no end. Just letting you know this is not a defective device for you. Seems to just be the motor itself.
I got that too and I just noticed it today. It kind of makes a rattling noise when I am typing. Read a post on reddit where this guy compared two pures and apparently one of them didn't have that issue. The vibration was soft and fluid, with no rattle.
I absolutely love the vibrate. it's not that harsh buzzy vibrate like my Samsung or LG.. it's a nice like, round, flubby vibrate like the htc phones used to have lol

My vibration is loose as well. I also saw that reddit thread where someone was comparing two phones.
I did a Live Assistance chat with Motorola the other day and the rep said this was normal. Judging from the questions they were asking me, I think they thought I was mistaking the noise with the audio-notification (I'm not...). He/she kept trying to get me to adjust the notification volume.
In the end, the rep said they were going to escalate the issue to level 2 tech support and that someone would contact me. Exact words were:
"Just want to inform you that it is normal when you activates vibration on your phone but to lessen the worries on your mind, I will refer you and this concern to our level 2 technical support department to further assist you."

Probably luck of the draw. The only bad motor I've really had was the original moto x. All my other phones have been fine. And I've been through quite a few. Didn't bother me that much since I don't like haptic feedback for touches really and it was turned off most of the time. If it really bothers you trade it for another if possible.
Yeah, i love my moto x but the haptic motor feels like a device from more than a decade ago. I don't understand why they just couldn't go with the button style vibrating motor that samsung has.
My motor feels fine. The original moto x I had felt like it was gonna rattle loose.
(deleted)
At times I think I hear a rattle, other times its way too loud, and other times it's fine.
Guys, please, do this test:
Shake the phone in a (totally) silent room (maybe better at night), or next to your ear.
The strength of the shake must be like that you use to enable the torch with "chop chop" gesture.
Let me know if you ear something "moving" (cannot describe it in another way) inside your phone. I think it's the vibration motor, because the feedback it gives during texting, is different whether i use my phone in normal way (screen face up), or at bed (screen face down). Thanks
I barely have to shake my phone in order to hear what you're talking about

So i'm not the only one.. Is this supposed to be normal?
Like a sensor moving, or something like this..
sounds like it's coming from the top. probably something in the camera module or the headphone jack

Shaking probably won't work. Camera sensor isn't stationary in a lot of phones.
yeah, my vibration motor is a little wonky also. I her a little extra rattle that I don't usually get on my other devices. it kinda annoys me but I'll run it for a few more days and see how bad it gets on my nerves.
Yeah, I have this issue as well, and had the same issue on my old Droid RAZR Maxx (in which the haptic feedback gave out after a little less than a year and a half). I think it's a Motorola thing.
May be the answer!

I just got my Pure Edition 32GB. Really surprised and eventually extremely annoyed by the same rattling sounds you've been experiencing. I think I just got a solution (IF you are using stock GOOGLE KEYBOARD -which is great for me- ) :
Menu>Settings>Language & Input>Google Keyboard>Preferences>Vibration Strength on keypress: SET IT ON 40ms.
Like magic.
I've been using my 5X for a day now, and my one major complaint is the terrible vibration motor. The thing makes more noise than it does vibrate.
The original Nexus 5 had great feeling haptic feedback that made very little noise. Whereas, the 5X makes an obnoxious high pitch "beeping" type noise that sounds like it's coming from the earpiece.
I was typing on the 5X in bed last night, and the vibration feedback was so audibly loud that I had to disable it, for fear of waking my wife.
Part of me is hoping this is a manufacturing defect, but I am doubtful...
Here's a side by side video demonstrating the 5 vs 5X:

But the Motorola motors have one advantage, though highly audible, at least you can FEEL them! They vibrate and serve their intended purpose.
The 5x motor is barely felt yet highly audible!

That's so annoying! Lol. I don't use haptic for the keyboard so it isn't too bad for me, but for other haptic stuff, I know it will be

I never use it, but the best way to describe it is it is tiny. Some prefer a deep rumble. It makes no noise on mine
While not dismissing your opinion, I can see how this might not be something that everyone likes, I love it (so far). I qualify that statement.
Yes I can totally understand the annoyance of the sound I do love the immediacy of the feedback and while I don't want to say that it's stronger than the N5 it definitely feels more sharp and distinct. Now saying that I always felt that the haptic feedback on the original felt far too dull for my liking. I guess it's a personal thing but I can agree that the noise it generates would be preferably absent in a perfect world.

I don't think the n6 had a chirping sound when vibrating?
My N6 didn't chirp but the vibration at 100% was bad sounding. With a kernel tweaker it needs to be at about 50%. With the 5X, it's way less, very subdued, almost too subdude
As soon as I pulled the phone out of the box and turned it on, I immediately noticed this. I hope there is a fix.
For some people, this might not be a big deal, but I tend to pick up on subtle sounds, and it is definitely audible.
I have this exact same problem. It is obnoxious. I'm not sure how anyone who prefers key noises off could deal with this. I thought it was the speaker when I first got it. The haptic feedback is mostly felt through the back of the phone and the fingers/palm touching the underside. Which doesn't make much sense at all considering it's supposed to make it feel like you're touching the screen. On the screen it is way too underpowered. So basically there are no benefits to it at all on the phone. I have a replacement order already in the mail, but if it comes with the issue again I'm hoping they can upgrade me to the 6P or something (despite not wanting the extra size). It's sad that I have to compromise on the successor to the best nexus phone built just because either nobody noticed this or cared during production, or because of poor quality assurance.
Are you guys sure it's the faulty vibro motor and not it's placement? I remember how Nexus 10 had a very weird noise for vibration, and turns out the motor was placed right under one of the speaker grills, which resulted in the audible noise amplified by the empty space within the grill
Just got my nexus 5x. It doesn't sound anything near as loud as the moto. I'd say it's close to the audible noise of a Samsung. Which is fine with me. It might not be as strong of a vibrate, but its as least quiet. No point in having your phone in vibrate only mode when your phone's vibrations can be heard across the room!

This isn't the issue. For me most of the vibration is through the back of the phone and very little is felt with the screen-touching finger. In fact, the beeping noise from the video on page 1 (watch it if you're not sure of the noise) sounds more like it's coming from more on the top left (SD card area). With or without an SD card in or the tray removed entirely, the noise is the same.
I describe it as a large mosquito noise.... and I like it .
I'm on my 2nd 6P and just noticed a bad rattle when I tap anywhere on it?? The rattle appears to be coming from the upper right, but sounds like it may be all the way across the back of the phone.
I seen, and responded to, another thread that suspects the camera as the culprit??? I don't recall my 1st 6P being this bad.....So I spoke to Google and they are sending me my 3rd 6P.
I guess the main reason for this thread is: Everything else is perfect on my phone, except the BAD rattle..... Has anyone returned their phone for the rattle and gotten another one that rattles just as bad? I guess I'll find out for myself next week, but I was just curious what the masses say?
Camera... Most cell phones do this.
It shouldn't do this to the point you feel it is a defect of sorts. The camera rattle is minor and only when slapping the phone against the palm of your hand or when landing the phone on a table with a light thud. It SHOULDN'T be audible on taps on the display, typing or even shaking the device in the air. At least mine doesn't. Thank God.

It appears you may need to RMA. Your call...
I could hear my rattle in the galaxy S5 just by shaking it. The N6P you have to tap pretty hard to hear it. Not worth the RMA to me as I don't see it as a problem. Most phones do this if you hit it hard enough these days.
Don't lightly tap it.

Turn on the camera and tap. The rattle should be less pronounced. It is the camera AF.
I cannot feel my 6t vibrate at all. If it's on a table, even Ina quiet room, it's very difficult to hear vibration. Does anyone else have this issue?
While I do feel it is the weakest vibration motor in a phone ever. I wouldn't say I never feel it even on a table. There is a setting to adjust it.

I totally disagree..ideally you aren't supposed to hear the vibration..if you want to hear notification you turn on sound. Vibration is something you feel. Immediately when using this phone for the first time I was struck with how nice the vibration felt compared to my old phone (Moto x pure). It's all subjective
I've noticed the vibration can very rarely be felt while wearing baggy pants, tighter fitting clothes though I feel it fine. Luckily for me I only ever wear baggy pants while at work where my phone is almost always sitting on a work bench.
I miss the old blackberry vibration motors that would literally rattle the phone off the table on their strongest setting. With phone in holster I rarely feel the vibration alerts; previous phones like 3T or before that LG G3 I could feel while holstered no problem.
So my feedback to OnePlus would be to get stronger motor next phone.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
Is it just me or does the vibration motor seem to weak at times and get stronger other times. Then you get the situation where the keyboard doesn't vibrate at all.
Totally agree...... vibration is weak and it's impossibile to use
Hello, sorry for the hard words but.... IMHO and for my needs the haptics of this phone are just a joke and totally useless. I rarelly want to hear my phone ringing (office, home or outside) and even with a skinny trousers it´s very hard to feel a whatsapp much less a call.
I was very close to return the phone and buy a POCO F1 for that reason (a really heave reason for me and many other smartphone users). For a phone of this range price it´s a shame having a vibrator with this quality. Very very bad OnePlus.
I think the biggest problem with the vibration is the extremely short pulses. Textra has configurable vibration patterns, but I don't like the way it looks. What I have done to fix the problem for myself is to install Xposed and use gravity box on top of many other cool features it has a notification controller that allows you to select vibration pulse lengths.
People still use the vibration and haptic feedback? I haven't used it in 7+ years... Mainly because my SO hates the sound of it xD
Yeah weak as hell here can't even here it on a table lol and all on max

I would rather not hear a ringer all the time personally and with the short vibration pulses of stock I can't feel the phone go off either. I just want to know I got a text without having to announce it to the world, but as anything everyone has a preference.
Coming from a Pixel 2XL and 3XL, the vibration motor seems very "cheap/loose" to me. It's not as prominent as the Pixels and I don't feel it in my pocket if I'm walking around in a mall or something. I do feel it when it's in my hand though.
If this can be improved on, along with the camera and fp sensor, OnePlus would have a beast of a phone on their hands.
I have used OnePlus x .
It was awesome.. very low frequency , very soothing while typing ....
Vibration in 6T is like very high fast ie high frequency... It's entering the audible zone of frequencies... The higher the frequency , the more it will not cause vibrations that are felt .. it will cause vibrations that are heard.
I wonder how they get to degrade while new phones get released.
Wont they have previous experience and logs ??
Or is that new people coming in and they don't know the history of the company / had no part in it.
