a cheap piece of crap with numerous glaring flaws as many people are saying? or have the bugs been worked out of the latest units?
Dude, like, maybe you should checked before ordering? Haha.
But no, the 7 doesn't feel cheap at all. If you're unlucky simply return it, but if you have a good model it really does feel solidly built with a nice weight and finish. Its snappy as hell, and I've had almost no software problems whatsoever.
You'll be happy, whether you need to return the first one or not.

If you don't know what to expect when you buy something for few hundred dollars, perhaps you shouldn't buy it in the first place.
what I expect is quality, when i bought my ps vita for nearly the same price I got a rock solid piece of tech with quad core cpu and gpu capable of incredible gaming, which is why I bought the nexus 7, for its tegra 3 and quad core cpu I expect the same level of quality I get from the vita considering both are nearly the same price
Pure awesomeness!

No bugs that I have noticed on mine. The only thing that feels cheap is the bezel. Other than that rock solid.

I have had 5 and every single one has had faults, some of them multiple faults. All of them have had the screen lift problem on the left. All of them have had LCD issues such as stuck pixels, backlight bleed or LCD mura.
If you get a faultless unit, you are in the extreme minority. I wish you luck anyhow.
Edit: I would like to add that if not for the faults, the Nexus 7 is worth a lot more than what it sells for. It's a solid piece of kit. The faults turn that perspective on it's head though.
I recently got mine its a C80K with no defects. I'm pretty ocd too. Swapped out two iPad 3`s due to screen probs.
I was worried about getting one because of all the horror stories, but there are good ones out there

wow such manner~~~
Nexus 7 is an awesome tablet. ASUS just sucks at manufacturing it. Hopefully your's will arrive in good shape.
Possible issues to expect...
* Left side of glass raised above the bezel. This seems unfortunately common, but there are quite a few things people can do to fix or minimize the issue.
* Washed out colors. Good chance you won't even notice it if not comparing it side by side with something else. Some people claim to even prefer the less vibrant colors.
* Weak speaker. Volume+ app can help, I set mine to +7 boost.
* Screen over saturated during and after playing video. This goes away within seconds of playing the video, turning the screen on and off clears it up. If you are rooted, there is an app and script you can install to disable the feature causing the problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815414
Think that is about all I can think of on possible issues you might come up with. It's still a really nice tablet though and it's good points do outweigh it's problems. So I wouldn't worry too much.

Hey,
Although the nexus 4 seems a very cool smartphone, I've sadly seen enough threads of people cracking the glass & paying a lot of $$ for fixing it. As this phone seems TOO poorly build, I was wondering if the build quality hasn't been improved by LG in the mean time..?
It would be nice to have a phone with stock android & this specs, but I won't buy it if it can break even with temperature differences or when falling from 10cm height.. :/
Many thanks!
Sven
And what's your point again? I've had mine since Dec 7th and no damage, glass is premium compared to most..9 months and no issues

ive had mine since beginning of january, no damage of any kind. i dont use protection of any kind on it, no case. the back glass has some micro scratches, the front is perfect. and ive dropped mine a bunch of times.
what youre saying is that people that get in auto accidents, and damage their cars, are just buying poorly built cars..
what youre reading in the forums is very rare. imagine how many people that dont have any issues, that dont post, as opposed to the few that do.
breaking Nexus 4 or any other Smartphone with temperature differences is very rare. Many people just use this excuse to get a free replacement.
Thanks for the replies!
My point is that I want to know if it's likely that I'll spend 100$+ extra on this phone or not..
I'm aware that reading the internet is a bit 'dangerous' for getting wrong ideas, indeed only people that have issues usually post.. However, if you search google you'll find a lot more issues with the Nexus 4 compared to other phones. It's also the only phone where I find (quite a lot) replies like 'it fell once from 1-2 feet & it's broke' or on the temperature issue. That's why I concluded the Nexus has poorer glass than other phones.
PS: I find the car crash comparison to be a bit too exaggerated, I would'nt expect my phone to survive a fall from 10 feet heights also..
I recommend NOT buying an Asus device. The screen on my three month old Asus 2013 Nexus 7 cracked without ANY mishandling, misuse, abuse, falls, bumps, temperature extremes or having anything dropped on it. It was a spontaneous crack that I believe was due to some defect. I sent it in to Asus explaining what happened and I was told I'd have to pay for the repair.
If you do a search for spontaneous Asus Nexus 7 screen cracks you will see there are many people describing this problem.
Either Asus has flimsy products that break under normal use, or they have defective products that they don't support. Either way you will regret buying this tablet.
Remember that the Asus Nexus 7 DOES NOT have Gorilla Glass, only Corning scratch resistant glass. This screen WILL CRACK and you will be out over $200 or be expected to pay $165 plus tax for repair. In other words DON'T buy this Asus device. At least wait till they start using Gorilla Glass.
Save your selves a huge hassle in trying to deal with Asus and losing out on a bunch of money. Buy something else.
Four months here, no problems with the glass.
maybe u accidentally dropped it while u sleep walking? lol

i'd mine for 4 months also and few days ago the touch screen stopped working and after i restarted my tablet i got stock on google logo till now i cant turn on the tablet..
My screen didn't crack but the rubber/plastic frame cracked. Sent in to ASUS and they repaired it. They switched touchscreen, too, but didn't help with touchscreen issues.
In some german forums you can read about at least 2 people having the same issue with cracked touchscreen. They were treaten the same like here. But one of them is a very active forum member so I trust him as I've seen my cracked frame - and I used the Nexus always in a case and didn't do anything which could have caused a crack although I can't guarantee that I'm not walking while sleeping...
As the screen or better the touchscreen is often bad you shouldn't wonder if there's more terribly wrong with it...
Just my 2 cents.

While I agree that ASUS' support is rather iffy (ex ASUS Transformer Prime owner here) - the reality is that the N7's glass is indeed Gorilla Glass.
I think for most people, the attraction is getting a pretty high end, compact tablet for a very low price. So we factor in the odds of failure against the cost of repair or replacement. I don't think I'd ever buy a $500 tablet directly from ASUS, just because of my experiences with the Transformer... but buying a tablet that's technically a Google device (I bought mine from Google directly) means that Goog is going to take some of the hit if something goes wrong.
However, a broken screen just doesn't 'happen'. Gorilla Glass, for example, doesn't prevent breaking - it prevents scratches and reduces the chance of breaking. Corning even goes to some length to point this out. It's quite possible your unit had a small crack in the glass at the edge where you didn't see it and it expanded out into a full crack. If that's what happened, yeah, you're kind of screwed since there's almost no way to prove it wasn't misuse.
As unfair as it may sound, you got really unlucky. But it's not a typical problem.
I bought one and I'd buy one again if I had to, but I don't disagree with the notion that this product has terrible quality control. My first one had a bulging battery, random reboots, touch screen issues, and wifi issues. I RMA'd it after the touch screen stopped functioning completely and the glass actually broke while it was sitting still charging. Despite all of that, I can't think of another device that would give me less trouble and at the same time allow me to do everything that the Nexus 7 does.

Have hadn't any issues with cracking glass on either the 2012 or 2013 N7 but then I've never dropped it and keep it protected in a Case Logic sleeve when not in use or when transporting. If it's abused just buy another since they're on sale instead of blackmailing Asus.

I've never had any issues with my TF701 tablet, but I had screen bleeds on my nexus 7 1st gen, nexus 10, nexus 4... I think its Google trying to fit all these high end specs into a low cost device... Nexus devices usually come with some QC issues. Personally never had any issues with my other AsusTeK computer devices like the tf701, my PC motherboards, and laptops. If I were u I would just keep RMA'ing till u get a good device, I went thru 6 nexus 10's before they gave me a good one. I had asked Google to open up the box before they ship out and they did

For any device, some of its unfortunate owners will one day found themselves facing the same situation as op, so I guess the solution is to buy one of those insurance plans?
Used it since the first released day and no problem so far. I even don't use the screen protector at all and the screen doesn't have any scratches (till now).

? You know this for a fact, that EVERY SINGLE tablet has this issue? Either mine is the unique exception or I just haven't noticed it, and if I haven't noticed it doesn't that mean I don't have a problem?
I think something people have to remember is the Nexus 7 is a hugely popular item and MANY people have bought it, but not nearly as many people are on this or other forums, so you tend to only hear the negative loud people. I'm not saying people haven't had problems, just that this forum is biased towards perfectionists and the most vocal people.
I'm very satisfied with my nexus 7 (2013)...
It's way cheaper but better than most tablets that I've tried...
I guess we just have to check what we are buying...

Damn, I must be one of the lucky ones, no multitouch issues (or any other for that matter). I think it goes like this: those with problems will be vocal and complain whereas the ones with working tablets are actually using and enjoying them and not posting about it.
Maybe people with no issue need to start gloating about it so the ones with problems can see they actually are in the minority
Edit: just for the records, I did have the screen lift issue on my old Grouper, but both my Deb and my wife's Tilapia never had any problems.

I know it came out recently, but have there been any hardware revisions at all? I owned part of the first batch and promptly returned due to it just feeling cheap and my AUX cable basically falling out whenever I'd plug it in.
Anyone order recently that has a newer build date and not having any hardware issues? I'm thinking of coming back to this.

I must agree that most of the issues that people are worried about is only affecting a very small portion of phones. Being an XDA member doesn't help either, since we are an extremely vocal minority. The general public simply wouldn't even notice "screen tinting" or "inconsistency of doze," etc. We just happen to surround ourselves with picky, vocal people here. Gotta look at the big picture

If you check the history it's always same people that complain or are worried about quality. You will find these guys in the LG G4 threads, Galaxy S6, Note 5 and now Nexus 6P. Nothing bad about being cautious, but it's a damn phone, just pull the trigger and enjoy. Afterall nothing built from factory is 100% perfect.
My screen was perfect, buttons colicky and body was dent or ding free. The only.issue was a loose aux port. It just felt too delicate, I don't know how to explain.
I'll probably pull the trigger again after the new year and see how the graphite coating holds up.

I just meant revision like "hey we built this wrong, let's touch it up"... Not anything like a design change or something major like that.
I remember with the Nexus 4, having a glass back, people were cracking it when laying it down; so google had LG put " nipples" on the bottom corners of the device so it wouldn't lay flat. They didn't acknowledge this change, but one month it was flat and the next it had teeny tiny bumps.
I don't think Google cares much about their customers to revise this phone. The Nexus fanboys are eating it up candy.

I wouldn't say that's entirely true. I'm sure either Huawei or Google will have a revision in the coming months, though most likely nothing major.
Even if they made a revision, they wouldn't announce it. Doing so would cause an uproar from early adopters. We would have to depend on another tear down in the coming months to see if anything changes

Everything about this phone is pretty amazing but, my main concern is the durability. HTC can do pretty well in bend tests based on what I've seen. The problem with this phone is there is a lot of chassis missing for that glass back.
I know it's a bit soon to speculate but, it's no longer a small risk when it comes to the initial outlay and I may just sit this one out for once as my 6p and 5x are both doing quite well considering I went naked after about a month. The 5x is my work phone and I have dropped it all over the place, spilled tea on it, and it lives in my back pocket during transit.
I really hope Google did their homework on this one because all eyes are on them now.
yeah, the glass panel's exposure scares me a bit. HTC's had a history of absolutely bang-on build quality, so that leaves me feeling good, but glass is glass. honestly, i was really hoping for a soft curved back like HTC has been known for, which is a crazy help for keeping wear down on normal use (obviously doesn't help drops). I am reluctantly awaiting potential bumpers since clear skins never last or look worth a crap, or maybe just go full retard on a Live Case.

for sure. once it's in hand for a few days, I'll make a call, plus more case options will have surfaced by then, and people wills tart weeding out the dumb OEMs that misalign port openings on their first manufacturing runs. i'm hoping to keep this naked as long as possible. historically, cases weren't for me, but that changed with my 5x. love the diztronic on my it, it's done a masterful job of protecting the phone's shell from the embarrassing amount of discoloring it experienced in the first 3 weeks i owned it and didnt have it dressed up..."get the blue-ish colored one, they said. yeah it's matte but it wont collect dirt, they said...". jerks.

Ok, so I caved in and got an iPhone 7 a week ago on their upgrade program. That way I'm not spending so much in one hit. I've bought a smart battery case and I got nearly 12hrs usage yesterday with a lot of camera activity and gaming thanks to the double battery power. I can do most of what I was doing on my 6p and in a lot of cases more. There seems to be some minor perks for the iOS versions of the Google apps. For once I'm going to wait for my contact renewal in January and keep an eye on all the news with these phones. If they turn out to be the real deal then I can get more than what I would have got if I was buying it like I normally would a Nexus. So in 3 months the winner can be my daily driver and the runner up can be my work phone. I must admit iOS has certainly matured since I last had a serious look. If you actually take the time to configure it to your way of working it's actually the same. I still use all the same apps I was using, even my password keeper. All my friends and family have started to wonder if I'm having a midlife crisis because I was so anti Apple and I can only admit I was wrong. It's something you have to openly experience to understand.

GMonkey I've just asked if anyone here have used an iPhone recently and after that I read you post.
Do you recommend me to try the iPhone 7 now that the Google Phone has the same price?
My last phones: Galaxy S3 (I hate Touchwiz) -> Galaxy Nexus > Nexus 4 > Nexus 5 > xperia Z5 Compact (I regretted this decision. Bad camera) > Nexus 5X (excellent camera like the Nexus 5 and 6P)
I'd like to know how is the iPhone 7 compared to the 5,X (specially the camera without HDR+) and using only Google Apps and Google Sync (not iCloud, iTunes, etc. Just Google apps). Can you replace Siri with Google Now?
Considering this...do you recommend me that jump? Or I'll miss Android a lot?
Thanks

It's a tricky one because there are pros and cons. The good thing is that you have 2 weeks to make your mind up and apple are pretty good at disputes from what I hear so you could always try it for a bit. It's another world compared to the 5x (which I'm still using as my work phone) because of battery, camera, and the fact it's water resistant. It depends on what you like about Android. If you like all the Nougat features with notifications etc and rely on quick charge then you may struggle. If you don't mind losing out on the openness of Android then you'll like iOS enough to switch. I use inbox, google play music, movies, books, keep, YouTube, google drive, sheets, docs, and slides in exactly the same way as before. Google has been clever in building its own ecosystem within iOS and I can still share things to drive and keep etc as I did before. You can still keep documents offline and keep them synced. Google photos still syncs and it also supports iOS only features like moments. Drive and it's related apps have a password feature which is nice to have. I still use a password manager. In apps it only works on some, others you need to copy and paste. It works fine in safari if you press the share button on a log in page. My photos are far better than my 5x and 6p. 3D Touch is amazing, anyone who says it isn't hasn't given it a good shot. It's given me the ability to hold down on an app icon for shortcuts or preview links or images etc. People complain that google puts more effort into iOS apps and it's just because it's easier to cater for a small number of devices. Other developers seem to be doing the same. The only limitations are what the OS won't allow which I prefer out of privacy. Remember with Google we are the product and the ad space buyers are the customer. There are 2 main ways to make money in the software space. 1. Is by selling a solid solution and 2. By offering a free solution that has other ways of making money. This is why Facebook is the largest media company in the world without ever uploading a single photo of their own. It's been built by our efforts and so has Google. With this in mind you know who will be the better option when things go wrong. I used to avoid Apple shops like it was someone else's church so I had no idea how they operated. They didn't have an issue with me being an android user and they spent so much time with me even after the sale was made. I've been back in since to ask questions as it's not for from my office and it's like I've got my own little XDA shop to walk into but, I won't get shot down if someone disagrees with me. When you realise that some of your favourite android blogs also have sister sites that are iOS based and all the fanboy anger is driven by them you realise it's ok to like both and I now visit both websites and follow both podcasts. Sorry to have gone on for a bit, I just wanted you to know it's not just about the product as the service behind it and the community that support it are equally as important.

Hey and what about replacing Safari with Chrome. Apple Keyboard with Google Keyboard and Apple Maps with Google Maps? Is this a good idea? I have years of custom words saved in Google Keyboard.
Can you also replace the main gallery with Photos?
I'm really tempted to try an iPhone 7. However I don't think I can buy it just to try it. If I bought it, I would use carphone warehouse shipping it to Barcelona. (Here in Spain it's much more expensive than there).
Regarding Nougat stuff...well I'm using a lot the new DoubleTap to fast switch between the last 2 apps and I love it... But sometimes it lags in the poor 5X with limited RAM.

I was lucky enough to run into a Google Rep at a Best Buy. From the short demo she was kind enough to give me it looked like she was using the phone as her daily driver. The device had a nick in it on the corner from what looked like a drop but the back and the glass seemed fairly flawless to me.
The back glass is Gorilla Glass based off of the tech specs. Also one thing I'd like to note is that the FRONT of the device is NOT 2.5D, the back window is. At least nowhere near as 2.5D as the iPhone.
