That mean it is not built in feature for Galaxy S4.

If you tried it and it doesn't work then it's probably not built in.
Works for me, but not on external hard drive, only flash drives. And only some of the time.
I thought the S4 has OTG support out of the box.
External hard drives require a lot of power, which the phone can't provide. Try power your drive through a different source, then it should work.

Possible? Yes
Manageable? Yes
Why it's not finished? Not enough willing devs.
But it's true.
I even offered some money for USB host development, and sadly, devs are not willing to this. All I got for an answer is this: we have moved to another device.
So what do you expect? Awaiting for nothing and being nice?
Have any of y'all found a way for the Nexus 7 to work with an MHL Adapter? I don't wanna have to buy a new adapter just to get this thing on the tele. Lol

Is it possible to emulate or virtualize such hardware?
For an example, my Realtek HD audio chip on my motherboard doesn't support Dolby Digital Live traditionally (lacks the hardware chip). But it can instead use the CPU for this task with proper drivers.

You would have to use an external like this http://www.meenova.com/st/p/m3r.html or a special case [unknown].

I have the Meenova, and it works excellent. Have an extra 32GB microSD stuck in it. The LG G2's excellent support for USB OTG is very nice.

Have you tried restoring stock to check if it works with that?
it seems the dev did not include and mapping of where things route...
try SoundAbout, you can force output to headphones, but you may need to switch it back as soon as you remove it
