Netflix 4K issue - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone having this issue? It will play around 10-15 secs then it will prompt me this.. Only happening on 4K contents. The problem is I cannot uninstall Netflix as it was embedded on the shield. I already signout, restart the machine but still getting this.

Is the shield TV connected to a HDCP 2.2 compliant HDMI input on your TV?
Also, try another account. I used to have this problem a lot on the built-in Netflix app on my samsung TV, and for some reason changing from my kid's profile to mine playing the exact same thing would work.
I have never seen this on my Shield TV, unless my internet connection drops...

do you think hdmi rated 10.6gb is not enough?

I am not sure...
But 10.2Gb/s is hdmi 1.4 / HDCP 1.4...while HDMI 2.0 / HDCP 2.2 is 18Gbps.
Did you try the HDMI cable provided with the Shield? This is the one I use and have no problem.
And again, the input used on the TV has to be HDCP 2.2 compliant. On my Samsung TV (2014) for example, only HDMI 3 can do HDMI2.0+HDCP 2.2 (only 30hz), all other inputs are HDMI 2.0 (at 60hz) but non HDCP 2.2 compliant.
What TV brand / model do you have?

I'm sorry it's 10.2gb
Here's my dilemma.. YouTube on shield was set to 2160p played without any issue.. Not a single buffer. Very smooth
I checked the settings on shield it was set to 4K 30hz. Yes I'm using the provided hdmi from shield going to my 4K Sony receiver.
My tv is Vizio 4K 2015 model. At the back of the TV I have 4 HDMI. It was set to hdmi 1 which is 30hz. I tried swapping to HDMI 2 60hz but I'm getting the same problem.
Ill try uninstall updates on Netflix as soon as I get home and keep you posted. Or probably try rooting the hell out of the shield and sideload netflix from play store

Here's the deal...youtube doesn't care about content protection, so anyone with a 4k tv can stream 4k content from youtube. HDMI 1.4 will support 4k resolution at 30hz no problem, so no problem with youtube. Netflix however, cares. So streaming Netflix in 4k requires all your involved components (shield TV, receiver, TV) to be HDCP 2.2 compliant (HDCP = High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) + HDMI cables supporting the necessary bandwidth for 4k+HDCP2.2 (18Gbps).
4k receivers might have all HDMI inputs HDCP2.2 compliant, some have 1 only, some have none, all depending of how old and how much you paid for it.
If I were you, before uninstalling netflix updates and stuff, I would connect the shield TV directly to the TV (no receiver), and see if the problem persists. From what I read online, if you have a 2015 Vizio M series, only input 5 will do 4k+HDCP 2.2
"Only one HDMI input, Input 5, is compatible with both newfangled HDMI connection protocols, namely HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 copy protection. The former allows 4K frame rates up to 60Hz, the fastest currently available. The latter allows the TV to accept copy-protected 4K content over HDMI, from devices like the Sony FMP-X10 media player, the Nvidia Shield playing back certain copy-protected content such as Netflix 4K, and forthcoming 4K Blu-Ray content. 2015 4K TVs from Samsung, Sony and LG offer multiple so-equipped inputs.
The other four are version 1.4, meaning they can handle 1080p sources up to 60Hz and 4K sources up to 30Hz. Of those four, only two support HDCP 2.2."

I spent hours and hours reading about all that stuff...and this is a huge headache for consumers!!!! To get my system where I want it to be, I'd have to spend $400 on a "Samsung evolution kit" + another $500 on a receiver!! Just because of all that HDCP BS...

Thanks man.. What a good read. I'll try your recommendation for sure.

so i directly inserted the HDMI cable from TV to shield showed all "ultra HD" menu.. i just realized that my 4K sony receiver is not HDCP 2.2 supported. Damn!
definitely, my 4K vizio TV is HDCP 2.2 capable since i can play netflix ultra HD on it.
thanks..

Yep...As I said 4K is going to be a massive headache for consumers...Netflix, Amazon, 4k bluray players, STBs etc will all require HDCP2.2... Many people are going to buy those new 4k TVs, to soon realize that their receivers, soundbars and other peripherals won't be able to work anymore. It's really a pain considering how much a good receiver costs...
What makes it even more of a BS is that this whole thing is only about content protection and encryption of the video signal to avoid piracy...guess what, it's already been cracked. All the 4k content from Netflix is already available on torrents. Yet we have to spend extra $$$ on hardware for legitimate content we are already paying for. Anyways...
Glad I could help!

good thing i bought the receiver after Nov 1. which is qualified for holiday returns until Jan 15.
thanks again

4k on Shield Tv
Yes having the same problem, Netflix is saying it's the bitrate from the ISP, but have a Roku4 that streaming fine on the same network. Netflix is saying the ISP is singling out the Shield and capping it. Hmm

[Q] Can you change the HDMI Output on the Acer a500

I bought an HDMI cable today so I can put Netflix onto my TV. I have an older HDTV, from 2004. It's a Panasonic model number pt-47x54j. When I plug my tablet into it, the little Android dude pops up onto the TV and and says 720p? I checked the owners manual and it says that the TV is only capable of 1080i, or 480p and 480i. I plugged my tablet into a more modern HDTV and it works just fine. Crystal Clear. Is there any way that I can get my a500 to work on my Panasonic TV? Attached is a screenshot of my TV's owner's manual on the page where it talks about HDMI inputs. Thanks in advance...
From the best of my knowledge you can't change this.Athens beat solution I could offer is Logitech Google TV.it rocks.and 70.00 amazon.
It can't be changed without hacking the drivers -- and even then micro HDMI is only capable of 720p output. All you can do is use a different TV or an adaptor (probably cheapest, but may lower video quality).

Thanks. At this point, I'm just using my tablet to watch the movies on. That's good enough for me. Once my TVs start breaking and/or if I get this dream job that I'm currently chasing after, I'm going to get a more modern TV and all of my HDMI cable worries will go away. I put the Netflix App on my phone too. My 3 year old freaking loves it!! He is always asking for my phone to watch cartoons on. It's hilarious. haha
Of course, I'm still going to try to figure this crap out with my current TV. That's the fun part.

micro HDMI itself is capable of 1080p, but the tablet will only output 1080p if there's a 1080p stream (such as a 1080p movie). Netflix will not do 1080p, though.

N10 HDMI resolutions

Hey, wondering if anyone else is getting varied resolutions when using a micro HDMI -> HDMI cable into a TV. We have a 37" plasma 1080 capable but I only get 480 out of, and our 42" LCD only gets 720.
Both are default numbers as I haven't been able to find anyway to adjust them. Have tried stock video player, MX player and YouTube through all to no avail.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd be most appreciative.
Cheers

You may want to check your hdmi cable. If you have a "standard hdmi cable" , and it supports up to 1080i/720p. The type 2 "high speed data hdmi cable" supports 1080p, 3d and high color. Your tv's and tablet may support it, but you may be using a standard hdmi cable.

I haven't looked, does the n10 support 1080i?... I notice most devices and movies I look at only support "p" areas (480p, 720p and 1080p) relevant since I plan to buy a big screen LED tv with my tax return...
Cheers for the heads up, I've read in other forums that the n10 downscales to 1080, but haven't seen it first hand.
There's a few variables at play, I'll get some specs from the TV's, I haven't seen any different type of cables on eBay else I'd have got the better one (i spent $15 on this one).

I purchased a $10 off of Amazon. Supposedly a HS cable. Real thick and almost 6 feet long.. Nice, but the TV I had planned to use it on, it did not output sound! 2 other sets, and the sou d works fine. I read here that it is a cable/tv combination problem.. Plug in another hdmi and the sound will work fine. Haven't tried it since I hooked it into the stereo via blue tooth.
I am planning to buy a small converter attachment,(pigtail cable or plug) that way I can use the hs hdmi cables I already have on the tv. I am still not convinced that it isn't a problem with android, but we'll see.

BEWARE of FireTV 2

FireTV 2 gave up its Digital Optical output in favor of a MicroSD card slot. This means legacy equipment equipment without HDMI inputs are not supported. Further if you have a AV device that does accept HDMI input but DOES NOT have Dolby Digital Plus Decoding, Neflix will be silent as its sound is DD+. You can downcode it Stereo in Netflix settings but no more 5.1 Surround.
The good news is that NEW Roku now has a Digital Optical output. Roku lost a lot customers last year to FireTV over this issue. Now Amazon has shot themselves in the foot and sending them, at least me, back to Roku.
Totally agree, one of the negative things in this new FireTV 2nd Gen., is the lack of Digital Optical output in favor of a MicroSD card slot.
But maybe we could use the following Audio Adapter/Audio Extractor :
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00RQ41KK2/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2BUXD0L1W5AKG
I personally have not tested this adapter, so I am not sure if it is compatible or not with the HDMI Output of the new FireTV units !
Others things that Amazon should have updated in this new FireTV (2nd Gen) are :
- USB 3.0, instead of only USB 2.0.
– Gigabit Ethernet, instead of Only 100mbit ethernet.
– HDMI 2.0, because Only HDMI 2.0 can pass 60Hz for 4k, and the New FireTV only comes with HDMI 1.4 that can only passes 4k at 30Hz.
- 4K at 60fps (not only 4K at 30fps), but it will need to have the HDMI 2.0
- More Memory internal memory 3-4GB instead of the current 2GB, and 16-32GB of storage memory instead of the current 8GB.
- NTFS support for external storage, instead of only FAT32.
However, I must say in favor of the FireTV, that although the Nvidia Shield already have some of the above features, is also true that it cost twice than the fireTV US$200.00 !

The gizmos don't work. DD+ requires either a chip or firmware to decode it. The gizmo's will pass sound but down-code it to stereo. There is a box out there for a few hundred that does do it. I haven't paid any attention to this for a year but Sono's couldn't handle DD= either back then.
I'm kind of thinking Tivo Bolt and ditching DirecTV. Since I'm trapped in the Carolina deluge and bored, I went up into the attic and traced to RG-6 runs to assure I could put an antenna up there. Took up a little mini-TV and it could a get a few stations.
Time to cut the cord. Tivo Bolt does 4K, has Digital Optical, accepts a "cable card" or OTA, and has a I 1TB HD. Their commercial skipping software sounds too good to believe. Downside is $400 but that's less than three months DTV.
schneid, you also could check the following links, where you will find more detailed information and also comparison of the New Fire-TV (2nd Gen) versus the Fire-TV (1st Gen) :

I think you may only be partially correct about the "gizmo" referred to by the poster. It claims that it will output AC-3 (DD 5.1), but don't know if it will extract the AC-3 signal from the DD+ signal to pass to optical (I doubt it).
And, even if the FTV2 had SP/DIF output, it would still not be able to do DD+ as this requires at least an HDMI 1.3 connection.

All true. DD+ is HDMI only and requires a chip. I tried one straight-through gizmo that split off an optical feed. and Netflix output stereo. Have an five port HDMI switch with Stereo and Optical outputs. Don't work either, although the Stereo out feeds my whole-house stereo ceiling speaker system, so that was a win. Got the the stuff from Monoprice.
So I'm wondering if the FireTV1 would not be able to do 4k as well?
With HDMI 1.4 and 30fps it should work.
Probably not with h265, but with h264 most likely.
Imho the FireTV2 update is a joke.

I almost ordered it from Amazon Sunday. Glad I read of some gotchas before I clicked. For me, especially being rooted and not seeing a 4K until widely adopted, I'll stand pat. I's lose more than I'd gain.
I imagine 4k has a lot of moving parts that must move in unison. Too complicated for me.

[Q] TV for Shield

I need to buy a new TV so if I want to use it with Nvidia Shield is there any important parameters of it like input lag or other?
I saw on the forum that it doesn't worth to buy Shield if you don't have 4K TV. Really is it true?
I don't think that I can afford 4K TV
I wouldn't agree that it's not worth buying without 4K, we've only got a 32 inch 720p samsung tv and I'm very happy with the shield.
if you have any issues with audio sync, there's an option to adjust it in the shield's settings.
There's more to TVs and streaming boxes than the amount of pixels they can display. You absolutely don't need a 4k TV to enjoy Shield's other features.
Do I need to find TV with low input lag like for ps console?

Nvidia Shield Pro Tv does not show up 4k resoloution on Screen

Hi,
Just got a new Nvidia Shield Pro Tv and after installing it does not show up the 4k resoloution on the screen. For some reason it shows 1080p default. No other options are even available. All my cables are 4k UHD complaint and also the receivier and the projector all 4k. My ampifier is Pioneer VSX-LX304 and projector is BENQW2700. Is there any one who is able to recommend me a soloution as to how to fix this issue please. Desperate to get it done. Am a bit disappointed with this devise as i have heard a lot of good reviews about it. Thanks guys Ed
I would suggest you connect the TV and reset the Shield to factory settings and let it boot up with the TV attached.
If no joy then I suggest your HDMI cables aren't HDMI certified, buy Monoprice certified premium HDMI cables, they are very cheap and completely reliable.
