[Q] Limelight Game Streaming

Has anyone used the Limelight app? I've got my PC which is wired into a Airport Extreme and then of course the Nexus Player is connected over N my router doesn't do AC. If I do the Nvidia Utility to optimize games and then run at 720p everything runs perfect but if I up it to 1080p it lags not really bad but bad enough that it annoys you. I know it is not the PC because it can run with everything maxed out no problem. I'm assuming it is a bandwidth issue getting to the nexus player. Would it be best to maybe get a USB ethernet adapter or a AC router. I have no problem running the ethernet cable actually already have one ran for my Roku 3.

mine operates 1080p fine
the only problem I have is sometimes when I load a game directly it is black screen, so I just load it through the steam dashboard.

Streaming from the nvidia tools, the picture is not great but I believe it's due to compression and not resolution. Also there's a bit of input lag, which appears to be due to streaming and not input communication (near instant response on the broadcasting PC).

I was able to play Steam Big Picture without any noticeable input lag. I tested several different games: BioShock Infinite (the final checkpoint to the ending), Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (much higher than 60FPS), Final Fantasy XIII (about 1 hour of gameplay), and Brutal Legend (played about 20 minutes of gameplay, hated it). The main point is: I was taken back. I didn't expect this to work so well, and I don't regret my Nexus Player purchase anymore, even if Google were to abandon the project as it stands now (lets be real, this project needs a lot of work).
If there's anything else you'd like to know, I'd be happy to provide the information. Oh, while I'm mentioning what I played, I'm running a fairly decent rig, an i5 4670k, with 8GB Corsiar RAM, and an EVGA GeForce 660Ti. Nothing is currently overclocked.

What controller did you use? And was there any issue with button mapping?

Hmm sounds like it must be a bandwidth issue for me since the Nexus Player is using wireless N and the host is wired. Time to buy a adapter and get a wired connection. Just for curiosity can you try using your AC wireless and see the performance please.

I would think in the case of streaming, it would always be better to try to go LAN. I know it's certainly possible to not use WiFi, as I also own an Nvidia Shield Tablet and I play remotely every day (Wifi N,) but certainly preferable to be hard-wired in whenever possible. The Nexus Player automatically switches to LAN when it's connected and settings become available once plugged in. A shame so many things are needed to make that happen though.

Already run an Asus AC68u router (before owning the NP) so I've been playing limelight over ac WiFi. I also have a gtx660ti in my gaming computer. Extremely impressed by nvidia and the folks at limelight who REd the game stream protocol. Truly great experience for me, but I'm not an fps multiplayer fanatic. I just like playing campaign, adventure, hack n slash games on the big screen. My input lag and decode lag was 9ms. I honestly don't know if that's good or bad but it's the numbers I remember from playing Arkham Origins last night. I don't notice any performance hit with that lag. Everything feels real time to me, but I'm probably not very sensitive to that like some real avid gamers may be. Never tried Lan
Everything in my stream library has worked so far. I use the dual shock controller with the sixaxis apk (sideloaded). That screws up the remote but I use my tv remote through HDMI cec anyway, along with the ds3 controller I don't miss the standard controller. The sixaxis apk has a nifty trick that has helped me a few times. In preferences you can toggle "mouse" support with any button. I choose the PS-power button on the ds3. I can't recall which but one of my stream games just sits there asking me to press start, and I can toggle the mouse mode to press it. Most games that ask that (even without game pad support) usually go straight to the game as if limelight is helping you along by providing the start click or something

No problems with Limelght stremaing on mine.. 1080p/60fps, over ac wifi using an AC68u router. I've tested it with about a dozen games at this point, most only briefly.
Latency reported varied from 6 to 10ms, with the median probably falling about 9ms. Feel wise, it was barely perceptible, and didn't have any effect on gameplay in any games tested. I did not test with any shooters, other than Defiance, which is toward the slow end anyway as shooters go. I probably ran about 1hr of Guild Wars 2 through it without any problems - no disconnecting, crashing ,or other wonkyness. Once or twice I'd notice compression artifacts but they would clear up in under about 1/4th of a second.
On the gamepad side of things, I played Assassin's Creed: Black Flag a bit, using a 360 wireless gamepad and the MS usb receiver for it. Here's an interesting tidbit - the game popped into gamepad mode, even though there wasn't a gamepad hooked up to the PC itself.
The gamepad mappings were correct/all buttons worked the same within the game as they do when the gamepad is hooked directly to the PC. I'm not 100% sure that's an out of the box thing though, because I have been messing with the keymap file for the 360 controller to get it's d-pad working in general. I'll have to do a little more testing in that respect when I get a chance.
Overall the experience was great though, and really opens up some interesting possibilities.

I wish my Limelight would work but i think its a problem with my PC and Nvidia Experience sins i cant even get the program to open on my PC, just errors every time i try top open Nvidia Experience, and i tried to connect to my PC from the app and i got prompted with a box to enter the pin and managed to start a game from steam but it didnt work so good, the game started but suddenly i lost the ability to stear and the app kicked me and it takes 10 tried to get it to start just to play 1 minute...
So i tried Splashtop THD and Splashtop 2 but those where unuseable sins the screen was all green and flickery so i have to settle with Kainy HD that works fairly good...

well damn, that worked a lot better, might even pay the ~10$ sins it worked way better than my ~20$+ Splashtop THD.
i got a 970 GTX so should be no problem, but my Nvidia Experience wont even start and seems just buggy as hell, so Kino was a good alternative, low latency and smooth gameplay with the default remote.

Too bad. My 660 does great with limelight. Did you enable gamestream and tell it where to scan your game libraries?
It can also work well just staying inside steam, but on your steam-server you need to go to big picture mode and enable hardware accelerated encoding. HW decoding was enabled by default I believe, but encoding was not. Without it steam IHS will suck through steam and consequently through limelight

ah, yes, the streaming was enabled and last time i used it i managed to laung borderlands but it soon stoped working and i allways have connection issues and gets disconnected soon after i connect.
the hardware encoding was not tho..., gonna give it one more go with it enabled when my kid goes to bed tonight, cheers again,

might explain why sometimes i a SLOW ENCODE message on the bottom left , im not using limelight however i have another pc i was just curious about limelight so took a gander in here , glad i did!

$70 is a good price for this product since the average price that you'll find at retail stores is $109 CDN. If you use the latest Kodi v15 (Isengard) x86 builds which are posted on Kodi's web site, I think you'll find that the stability and video playback is pretty smooth on this device. I don't use Plex, however, so I can't really speak about that software.
I've now had my Nexus Player for about a month and aside from its main use as a streaming media player, it's nice that I also have plenty of control and customizability after the device is unlocked and rooted. My HTPC almost never gets used anymore which is helpful in terms of saving on energy costs.

No, you don't need a USB adapter of any kind to set up Kodi. It works automatically with the Nexus Player's remote. You may, however, want to map Kodi's "context menu" function to the remote's play/pause button. I got this for half off at my job and find it to be garbage if your using it for a home theater setup. No Dolby digital for Netflix or 5.1 in any video apps except for Google movies which is in Pcm. Kodi will do Dolby and DTS but not pass HD Audio codecs. A major miss for any home theater enthusiasts. If your using this as a streamer for your bedroom or kids room. For $50 I paid good deal then.

I really like my nexus player. But with the Forge tv out probably on may 1st for $100 or less (without a controller) I think you may be better off waiting.

if you just want a media player than i think its a great choice. i have been using mine to play either netflix or my media from a network share via kodi and it works flawlessly, especially since the latest kodi update. i don't know how well the audio is decoded (it might be great for all i know) but you may want to double check that. my nexus player is just hooked up to my bedroom tv, haven't tried it on my nice 5.1 audio system downstairs so i can't speak for that but for my uses its great. my main criticism is the crappy remote and no ethernet. i would also recommend getting a micro usb to ethernet/ usb otg to usb to ethernet if you want to do streaming video. i don't believe wifi technology is stable enough to stream video without occasional buffering hiccups and such so thats what i did for like a $10 fix.

Running PC Game Streaming silently?

Hello all,
The main reason I bought an Nvidia Shield Android TV was to replace my PS3 as a media server and most importantly to free up my desktop so my wife could use it for her work.
However, I've since discovered that the shield game streaming facility uses up the monitors, keyboard and mouse, rendering the desktop PC a complete slave to the shield console, it doesn't stream the game silently in the background like say a media server would like plex or whatever.
I've tried installing the drivers for the onboard graphics card, sticking a HDMI cable in the back of one of the monitors and using the onboard HDMI, using that monitor's interface as the primary one so my wife could use it, but when I try and stream a game on the shield it just tells me that the GeForce GPU needs to be the primary source.
A bit annoying, I might need to fork out some money on a new machine just so she can use the desk, we don't have much room in the house.
I can't really think of any other way to get around this. Anyone else had any luck??

I guess you misunderstood what they meant by streaming the game form your pc. All your Shield TV is doing is being a controller basically. Your PC is actually sending a h.264 video of what is on your PC to your Shield TV.

I agree, I wish it did it in the background as well. Hopefully that is the option in the future as streaming matures. I'd take a slightly lower quality (720p 60fps) if it meant my wife could use the PC while I stream a game.

try this with most of your games on your current machine as is. while yes there might be a few you can multitask with, alot of apps and programs require "focus". focus is what happens when your background windows jump to the foreground. you cant click on and interact with background windows without putting them into focus. yes you can leave them running but games require this same interaction. its just the way most operating systems and programs work.
again, yes i realize that some games do allow this, but not all, as it comes down to how the game is programmed, therefore its not nvidia's fault. Some games dont even allow you to play with the gamepad if the game is not in focus. Hope this helps better understand the situation.

Can the Mojo stream games from PC?

I was going to go and buy a steam link to play my PC games downstairs but saw that the Mad Catz Mojo is only £20 more and comes with a controller.
Doing a quick google search I found some mention of game streaming available on the Mojo:
Can't add links but there is an article on techradar.com & engadget.com saying gamestream will be included in the Mojos firmware updates.
However these both seem quite outdated and I can't see any information stating that it was implemented in the end.
Has anyone got game streaming to work smoothly on the Mojo? Perhaps through limelight / moonlight? I have a gtx 970 so should be good to go.
I use my Shield TV with gamestream in the bedroom with no issues however don't want to spend another £120 if I can get away with £60 for the Mojo.

This works very well with the splashtop software. I use antimicro zu remap the controller buttons. you can even emulate a mouse.
but keep in mind, you have to do everything yourself, the shield is a lot easier to use.

moonlight works great with for example remix OS. As far as i know it also works on unrooted Mojo.
With LAN connection 1080p and 60fps works like a charme.

If game streaming is your primary intention, then I would recommend sticking with the NVIDIA Shield. If you buy the MOJO, you can definitely stream games at the same quality as the Shield, but it takes a lot of work to get the MOJO working at full capacity, whereas, the Shield is all ready to go out of the box.
I upgraded the stock firmware shipped with the MOJO to CyanogenMod 12.1. The stock firmware had issues with freezing and really wasn't running at the full potential that the MOJO had to offer. After upgrading it has been a breeze, with the exception of a few small hiccups. But again, this is a lot more work than getting a Shield for the extra dollars more, except that the MOJO can likely do more with regards to Emulation, Movies, Social Media, etc.
I use Moonlight Streaming from a GTX 650 on a Wireless AC network, and it works great with the included controller. I originally tried using Remotr and it lagged like crazy. The support that the controller has with the Gamesmart technology is incredibly impressive. It seems to 'just know' exactly how the controls should be mapped with basic common sense. With that said, if your intention is to stream games from Steam that already have full controller support, then this feature doesn't really bring anything special to the table.

So, the question is: Did nvidia gamestream capabilities ever make it over to the M.O.J.O. or was it all just hype on Mad Catz's part to sell more units? And if it was never officially brought over to the M.O.J.O., is it still possible? Or is it just a waste of time and energy at this point?
I'm looking at wanting to possibly play some pc steam games from the comfort of my living room, so I'm entertaining all options at this point. Do I sell the M.O.J.O. and by a Shield TV? Do I buy a Steam Link? Are there other options?

It works amazingly well, I've played for hours streaming from my PC to my MOJO
A couple of suggestions: Firstly I found my MOJO starts jittering after playing on in for anything over half an hour. I eventually found out that the MOJO was over heating. I guess it's working pretty hard with all that streaming. I found that if i stand it on it's side, leaving a little gap underneath, there will be better airflow, and it no longer jitters.
Also they suggest using ethernet instead of WIFI, I can agree with this, you get serious lag if you play over WIFI... don't even try it. I play on an ethernet over power adapter and it works perfectly.
You need at least an Nvidia 650 card, and I found it necessary to manually add some games, as they weren't always detected by the Nvidia client.
High FPS games worked perfectly - like DIRT3 but point and clicks are more fun when lying on the couch - have fun with your MOJO

Thanks @timjharvey! Yeah, I actually stumbled upon the Moonlight option after posting this thread! I had 2 Radeon 1gb video cards in crossfire set up on my pc, but I just switched them out for a 4gb GTX 1050 Ti card, so I could try out Moonlight. Like you said, it works surprising well, from what I have tested out so far... I only tried Counterstrike: Source for a brief moment the other night with a crappy BT keyboard. In the near future, I'll hook up a better set up and load up another game. I am hard-wired with ethernet, so it's pretty snappy there. Traditionally, I'm more of a keyboard and mouse gamer, but I might try to get used to the C.T.R.L.R. if it'll map out keys correctly...I think I'll also try to hook up the good kb & m just for s & g's. Thanks again for the input!

this is about four years too late to save the mojo, but it should work https://liquidsky.com it brings true cloud gaming to your phone, tablet, laptop, pc , n of course the mojo and no you don't need a pc of any sort

Hi @wave_js I'm running Remix OS - mainly because Netflix also works on this rom. What game are you having mouse cursor issues with? Is the game that you are having cursor issues with running at 1080?
