Exchange email disappears and reloads on CM 13.0 - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Pretty serious oddness here. Anyone else seeing this? Could be a bug that needs logging but I am not "cool" enough to post in the Dev forum.
I have a G900P (sprint s5, cdma)
I loaded the release/snaptshot version cm-13.0-20151227-UNOFFICIAL-kltespr.zip
I then add my hotmail (exchange) account to the stock email app
It loads 1 week of email as expected
Read an email (download any images, etc)
Now click back, or close and re-launch the email app
All recent email (today+ 4 or 5 days) is GONE, poof, magic! (older emails still there)
Email app then proceeds to re-download all the missing email
Rinse and repeat
This can't be good. This is literally with a clean install, no 3rd party apps installed.

CM13 is still in development and too young for the S5. Many fixes and changes are being implemented on daily basis. So doing a clean install of the latest nightly and gapps might solve your problem.
That being said, I grab the newest gapps from the link below, install Gmail app, and install the exchange service app from the same link. This will enable the exchange capability of gmail app and set it as the default email on your phone. Just like things are on a Google nexus phone.
With many thanks to Deltadroid for getting us the latest gapps:

Hence my post, trying to help devs. Good to be aware of these issues and work on fixes. Latest nightly still had the same issues.
If I use GApps Exchange, then I would not be able to surface these issues in the stock email app for developers. But it may be worth a try as far as getting my own phone working, yes. Thx.

Stock Email App + Notifications for sub folders

I debated if this belongs in Q&A or General, I think General, but mods please move it if I'm wrong.
I'm running the latest CM6 nightly. I have been flashing almost nightly (skipped few nights here and there) and this morning I decided to completely wipe my phone first before flashing latest + gapps.
I've gotten everything set back up and am noticing some different behavior with the stock E-Mail app. I have an Exchange Activesync connection for my work e-mail. I have server side rules set up on our exchange server that move specific e-mails to specific folders (completely outside of the inbox, but within my mailbox, obviously). Up until this morning, if mail came into one of these other folders, my phone did not notify me (this is partially why I have them set up this way, that and for organization purposes). After wiping and resetting things up, however, if a message comes in (never even hits my inbox) I get an alert for a new message. If I goto my email it's (obviously) not in my inbox, I can of course goto menu/folders and find the e-mail that triggered the alert in the appropriate sub folder.
I don't believe I'm overlooking any options to disable this, and am kind of curious why it suddenly decided to start behaving this way. I know some people have complained in the past that the email app doesn't work this way, myself however, preferred it the "broken" way.
FWIW, I already own Touchdown. I preferred it to the stock email app for the longest time, but once the stock app got the few options I was forced to use touchdown for, I switched back to stock. I know I could fix this issue by just using touchdown, but I'd rather just keep using the stock app if I can.
Anyone else seen this or have any suggestions?
Edit: nm, found the git commit responsible for this new behavior. Perhaps we will get an option to disable/configure this before cm6 is final.

I didn't. It's a new "feature" you could push email.apk from an earlier Rom (rc2 should do it) or wait and hope it becomes a customizable option. I'll proly end up pushing an older apk myself tomorrow.

Gmail stuck in outbox

I have an N7 3g. I'm using MoDaCa's JR-4. Outgoing emails continually get stuck in the outbox and don't go out. I think it has something to do with N7. I have never had this problem with other android cell phones, PC, etc.
Is there a solution?
Thanks
I have had this problems on phones before, but not yet on the N7 *knocks on wood.
First I would check your sync settings to make sure all is appropriate.
The way I was able to remedy the situation was to either uninstall gmail, and reinstall, or just uninstall the latest update. I haven't had that fail me yet. You could also try clearing data, cache, and force stop the app from settings first.
(may require reboot after)
Good luck!
i had this issue in Gmail today on the N7 running a CM 10.1 nightly. i used to see this a lot as well on Gingerbread, and uninstalling the app/clearing data in the app does work but makes you lose the draft you had written(which sucks if it was a long one!). i used to solve it by clicking reply and creating a dummy message in the same thread, saving that message as a draft, then going into my drafts folder and the message that got stuck would have an option to send... or something like that, and that worked. however, i couldn't seem to get it to work today, on Gmail 4.1.2 fortunately my stuck message today was small, so i just cleared data in the app and rewrote it, and it did send then.
You could also just highlight the whole draft and copy, then paste when done. It should be copied to your clip board and not the gmail app. I suppose it is always safer to save it somewhere before deleting, though I would think if you were going to do that, you would want to save the copy in a different app like ever note.

I'll try that here on Jelly Bean next time, but that actually wasn't possible before. When the message got stuck sending, it was in a limbo state where the text of the message wasn't accessible to be copied! I definitely tried that because i lost some pretty long drafts!

I have rolled back gmail to the earlier version several times but it keeps updating behind my back and emails become stuck in the outbox again.

I have rolled back gmail to the earlier version several times but it keeps updating behind my back and emails become stuck in the outbox again. Also, although I'm currently using JR-4, I have CM-10, PA, and stock rooted ROMS nandroided. I could restore any of them and test, but I'm pretty certain it's ubiquitous. It's either the gmail app or android 4.21.
Also, I have a Galaxy Note 2. 2 versions of gmail are installed: 1.0 and 4.21, and emails don't get stuck. N7 only has has 4.21 installed. Why doesn't N7 also have 1.0 installed?
Also, I just cleared cache and data and the email is resynching. I'm certain that the problem will return. I love the N7, but this is really annoying.

Is there a particular version of Gmail that works better? If so, have you gone into your market settings and disabled automatic updating? I've been running the 4.1.2 version for a long time now, and it never updates to 4.2. I also disabled update notifications so it doesn't bug me at all.
But yeah, it's an annoying issue. Sometimes i turn to K9 Mail, as it works great for Gmail accounts. Plus i love the dark theme option. In the end i like the way native Gmail synchs tho.

Thanks for your help. How can I downgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.1.2? I think that will work until Google addresses this issue. The Disable link inside "App Info" used to show this downgrade capability. However, that text was probably there when I was using a different Rom. I have MoDaCa JR-4 running now and I think I want to keep it.
I think if you flashed a ROM that came with 4.2, you won't have the option to uninstall updates. In any case, i posted 4.1.2 in the 3rd to last post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005006. You can just uninstall 4.2 and install 4.1.2 if you wish. I will warn you tho, I did have the stuck sending issue yesterday, but I think that was the first time.

Oh sorry, if it is a /system app in the ROM, then you'll need to use Titanium Backup or a file explorer app. The free version of Titanium will do the job.

I just use file explorer to delete it from /system/app, then install the 4.1.2 apk and turn off automatic updating in Play Store?

Yep, you might even want to disable automatic updating first, haha. And If I remember correctly, the apk installs just by tapping install, no need to paste it into /sysyem/app, I don't think...

Bad news 4.1.2 emails are now stuck in outbox.
This happens because Google wants to take over your e-mail service; in other words you must be using your Android or smartphone's e-mail app instead of Google's GMAIL App. There are two fixes to this problem, first is to download Goggle's GMAIL App and use that for email communication; and second is to ask google to allow 'less secure' apps i.e. non-google to access your e-mails (i know!) Here are the steps for the second option:
Allowing less secure apps to access your account
Google may block sign-in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safe.
Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:
The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 6 or below
The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird
Change account access for less secure apps
To help keep Google Apps users' accounts secure, we may block less secure apps from accessing Google Apps accounts. As a Google Apps user, you will see a "Password incorrect" error when trying to sign in. If this is the case, you have two options:
Option 1: Upgrade to a more secure app that uses the most up to date security measures. All Google products, like Gmail, use the latest security measures.
Option 2: Change your settings to allow less secure apps to access your account. We don't recommend this option because it might make it easier for someone to break into your account. If you want to allow access anyway, follow these steps:
Go to the "Less secure apps" section in My Account.
Next to "Access for less secure apps," select Turn on. (Note to Google Apps users: This setting is hidden if your administrator has locked less secure app account access.)
If you still can't sign in to your account, the "password incorrect" error might be caused by a different reason.

Improved Google Email app released

Google has released an updated email (not GMail app) for the Nexus and Play Store devices.
What's interesting about the X is that our phones use that email app, but since our phones aren't Nexus or Play Store devices, we can't get this app via the Play Store.
However, if you follow that story you can sideload the APK. If you do so, you'll end up with 2 "Email" apps in your app drawer. For me, this app fixed a number of issues and seems quite a bit faster. Also, the UI has been revamped a bit in line with the other Google apps.
If you're a non-Gmail email user, it's definitely worth checking out.
Unfortunately, the nexus/gpe (googlemail.apk) email app does not update the Moto x app (aosp mail.apk), so if you use the mail app for exchange, like I do, it won't pair with the correct exchange.apk, so there is no exchange support.
Edit: apparently you can have exchange support by installing the Google exchange app. I ripped one from my nexus 7 2013 on 4.4.3 and installed as a normal app. It works just fine. I disabled the system mail and exchange just to be on the safe side. I'll upload the apk here shortly.

Yeah i read about that too, I was about to install it until I realized there was an extra step, and wasn't sure if it would be worth the effort. IF you could upload the apk here after confirming that it works, that would be great!
Thanks!
exchange apk attached. Yes, it works.
I have a nexus 7. Not seeing a speed difference with my exchange acct and any GUI changes are super minor. Still considering loading the apk but not sure if its worth the effort.

There were apparently some security updates on the back end, but I agree, I see nothing major and no change in speed.

Note 4 910F on 5.1.1 - Gmail exchange account vanishes repeatedly

Hi, guys
I've updated my 910F to 5.1.1, and coincidentally - although probably not - I started having problems with Exchage/ActiveSync accounts in Gmail.
I always sideload the Exchange Services APK and configure my work e-mail as an extra account in the Gmail app. However, ever since upgrading to 5.1.1, my work account routinely and randomly vanishes: all e-mails disappear from the app, calendar won't show, and going into the "Accounts" setting does not show the usual entry. It is completely erased, and I have to reenter all of the account info to get it up and running again. However, it's always been just a matter of time (sometimes hours, sometimes day) until the problem strikes again.
Now I know there are a great many variables that could be at play here, but my questions are:
a) Has anyone been through the same situation?
b) How do I go about trying to figure out what is deleting the account from my device? Developers, how can I objectively debug/troubleshoot this?
Thank you for your help!

Ok so you stated that you got the 910f version and running 5.1.1 but is it stock rom or custom?
Since galaxy s2 I have never used stock roms as they are always buggy in one way or another. My advise is to use custom rom. If you don't want to use custom roms then you should get another stock rom. If you are running example COH4 then try ether a previous build or next build or even try and re flash the current rom.
I am on stock 5.0.1. 910f and I am having troubles with the gmail app syncing
With my hotmail account. All emails vanish (inbox-sent etc).
I have deleted and reconfigured my hotmail account through the gmail
App and also deleted it's data but the problem persisted.
I just can't get it to sync with other accounts other than gmail.
I think it is aproblem of the gmail app itself.
I have since switched to the stock samsung email client and everything
works fine!
@Zionator
It's my experience that custom ROMs allways end up having some quirks of their own; also, I'm on COI3 which is rock solid so far, in every other department.
@snatch_bill
On stock 5.0.2, I never had any problems. Also, while it works fine, the Samsung e-mail app is absolutely horrible, especially when compared with the Gmail client.
So please: does anyone have the least bit of an idea as to how to debug the problem? I'm not even really concerned with solving the problem right now, just understanding it.
Cheers,
Got the same problem. The exchanges account disappears after some days completely. It disappears in gmail and also in the account settings. I'm also using android 5.1.1 on my Note 4.
After reconfiguration the account works again for a few days until it disappear again.
Same problem here with the s6:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/exchange-account-disappears-frequently-t3176427
Seems to be a problem with the samsung rom. Guess we need to wait until samsung fix it.

Gmail not synching properly

Hi everyone,
this is probably not an issue related to the OPT, but I wanted to make sure whether other users are experiencing this as well. Since a couple of weeks ago, my Gmail is no longer properly synching my emails. Sometimes they come in in time, sometimes I have to sync manually. I already found lengthy threads on this topic in the Google support forums, so this seems to be a problem that started with a recent Gmail app update, as other users are experiencing it as well.
Are any of my fellow OPT users also experiencing this? It doesn't seem to be a general synching problem, as other apps don't seem to have an issue receiving push notifications.
Cheers!

Thanks, I have tried this multiple times already. I even did a complete clean reinstall of the system. It's not related to that. Also, the bug that Gmail doesn't communicate with the server properly when deleting an email has been occuring continuously for months, and there doesn't seem to be a solution to this.
I also got the same problem - on CM13 and Oxygen. I think its an Google Bug.
Me too. Stock.

I reverted back to the stock version of the app, though I'm note sure whether in OOS 2.2.1 this version already contains the bug. We'll see.
