Hello
I have had 2 6ps as I returned the first for this issue, but found it again in the second.
When I listen to audio with low impedance earphones on the lowest few volume settings, there is a lot of white noise which is quite turbulent: If the audio is just people talking it cuts out when they stop, so its quite distracting.
I can just make do with a mini external dac by USB or wireless earphones, but if this is not normal then I should exchange it for the defect. But two phones in a row with this problem makes it look like its normal.
Do you get any white noise on quiet volume with cheap/low impedance earphones (which work fine in other devices)? Is this just a normal issue, or should I RMA for the second time?
Thank you!
I get this issue on every pair of headphones I own. Even my Bose QC15 headphones. Slight tweaking with Viper4Android had kind of helped though, I am still disappointed.

My headphone jack seems loose for most headphones I try
I depends on the earphones I'm using. It's hard to say if this is normal but my gut tells me it should not be.
I think it depends on your headphones mine has no noise what so ever thought these are IEMs from Brainwavz forgot the model# but its the over the ear design.
I've used both low impedance IEMs (Beats athletic things?) and my Sennheiser 598s, which are rated at 50 ohms, and I've experienced this on both.

I have a solution to this!!! The gain is set waaaay too high by default, if you reduce the gain to around -20, the white noise goes away completely. You do sacrifice a small amount of volume however. But this will fix this issue.

Yes. The option comes with ElementalX kernel for me. But it is worth rooting your phone for!! It honestly does completely get rid of the issue.

OK, Thanks!
By the way, is it true that unlocking the bootloader trips a qfuse which voids the phone's warranty and android pay status? Several sites report this but apparently the qfuse might only be related to secure boot and not unlocking the bootloader, so rooting may not trigger it.
Does anybody know if unlocking the bootloader and rooting the phone definitely does or does not blow a permanent qfuse to make the warranty completely void?

It will not make the warranty completely void. If you relock the bootloader your warranty remains fine. I can vouch for this being true! Android Pay will work as long as you only do specific things, you'll have to refer to the other threads about that. Good luck.

now i don't know how to explain this really, but here we go. five minutes ago, i decided to plug my hd2 headphones into my computer so i'd be able to listen to a movie. twice now, once in each ear, i've gotten SHOCKED. i thought for whatever reason, static could have charged and been stored inside the soft ear-bud covers. after being shocked inside of my right ear, i took them off (soft ear-bud covers) and put the Left ear-bud into my left ear. three minutes later, SAME THING. it seemed like it happened when there was cracking in the audio during the movie. i swapped them out, replayed the area where i heard the cracking, and wasn't shocked...with my old G1 ear-buds. i've got that really low carpet in my office and always get shocked when reaching for the doorknob, that's why i suggested static in the first place...or maybe it's just a crazy design flaw!? either way, it really did hurt and i don't know what course of action i should take. has anyone else experienced this?
rob
it's definitely the headphones. i've gotten up, walked around, sat down...and with my G1 headphones, i haven't gotten shocked once, even during the audio cracking in the movie! i guess i'll be calling tmobile.
I got shocked twice, then thought to myself,
"why am I using the stock headsets? I deserve to be shocked".

Yep, I'm using my pair of Sennheiser ones for radio and anything else. As general rules, for every single mobile device, stock headphones suck monkey balls anyway. At least on my Sennheiser, I have noise isolation and some basses.
it may also be your computers sound card. ive owned many headphones over the time, but the ones i tried in my computer with a creative sound card shocked me. Now i have a Lenovo laptop, and have never experienced that with any headphones...
i would try the headset in another soundcard/pc jus to be sure what it is

I do exactly the same, I just can't stand those plug thingies in my ears. And of course, the quality of the Sennheiser is another world.
I have a strange issue with it though. Whenever I use the Sennheiser the phone auto-dials somebody from my favourite contacts list. I found out that if I wiggle the connector a little I can reproduce this effect. It also seems to be a problem reported on other HTC phones.
Should be related to the 4-ring (tip-ring-ring-base) connector on the stock earphone versus the 3-rings (tip-ring-base) on the Sennheiser. But how? Or is it?
I am currently in the process of sending back my nexus 7 because of a pretty defective speaker. The speaker crackles and pops when played above 40% . It basically renders sound on this thing without headphones as a boon starter.
I have two questions to the forum:
1) is anyone else experiencing this problem?
2) is it true that the problem stems from too much power behind sent to the speaker chip. A guy on another forum reckoned it could be fixed with software but I severely doubt that. I think the speaker is just damaged or loose
Kind Regards

If it helps, I had a similar problem with distortion of certain audio over 50% volume. Fixed it by installing Equalizer and reducing the for the faders two lowest frequency bands.
I can now run full volume without issue.
I think one of theverge people had this as well. I think Topolsky, in their latest podcast said "I liked the speaker" while his disgruntled colleague said speaker was bad. Looks like defect number three has reared its head (screen separation, digitiser fault).
Mine is broken too
I just got off the phone with Google. As soon as I mentioned distorted sound above 50% volume they said It was defective. They are sending me a new one within a week with a box and shipping for the bad one. I'm pretty sure they've been dealing with this a lot. They aren't the manufacturer so they aren't going to dispute or question a bad product. They know they initial bad reviews about sound could destroy sales.
I'm pretty sure that ASUS installed speakers that can't handle the output frequencies. Doubt they have a fix but maybe Google could update the code to meet the speaker frequency range while allowing the headphone jack to retain full audio range. A generic across the board equalizer adjustment might fix the internal speaker issues but would ruin the headphone usage. I just a thought.

It works but makes external speakers and headphones sound terrible. Great idea though. It will have to do until I get a new one. Since so some people aren't having sound issues I'm going to exercise my warranty rights until I'm satisfied.
I've just run into this exact same problem. Looks like I'll also be lodging a RMA for "speaker crackles above 50% volume" with Google.
I have distortion at volumes above 60 % however it varies with material. Cinema Paradiso theme music seams to have the perfect tones to rattle the speaker on mine.
I am not sure if this is normal as mine sounds better than the MP3 of this I was listening to above. I really don't want to be parted from my Nexus. Still I am disappointed that the speaker is impractical for film watching when on trips.

The replacement device I received yesterday, which has screen lift issues (3rd device with the same problem) now has speaker/ headphone jack issues. I left it turned on and charging yesterday evening for about 2 hours and when I came back to unplug it the device was stuck at the Google boot up screen and the back/bottom of the device was 127 degrees (I have an infrared temperature gun). Now the speakers and headphones can barely be heard with the volume all the way up. Hopefully the third replacement will not have any problems.
Bleh was starting to think I had a good one but was in denial about the speaker problem. Glad I found this thread so I try to get a better one. All these mfg defects it's like you won the lottery when u get a good one. Lol
Got a nexus with the same issue, it honestly does not bother me as I use my headphones a majority of the time. I rather dig in there then to send it in and have a risk of getting a unit with other issues

I thought my device was flawless until I noticed this speaker issue.

This worked for me after all. I'll be honest one day my nexus got really hot when charging. Played some music after and it had blown out. It seems that the bass is the reason for the popping sound.
I have the same problem ... my right speaker sounds like a trash can -.-
edit:
called google... system problems ... could not reach anyone ... niice
edit2:
called google... getting a new device -.-
Same problem here, got RMA a few hours after I sent in the request. New one should be here in a couple of days.
Mine work fine for 2 months and 1 morning I got this cracking and distorted sound at 40%
I did nothing wrong with my tablet and rarely use the speakers....
Well, I was showing a friend how to do voice input. Using SwiftKey. He held the microphone /comma key down continuously - and the nexus screamed. Not his fault. Wouldn't boot up for 5 minutes. Thought it was a gonner. It did boot up eventually, but the speaker is well and truly zapped. Distorted even at the lowest volumes. Unintelligible above 20%.
I was thinking of spending 20 quid to buy a replacement speaker and replace it myself - but it looks like it's a design fault to me (after much Googling). It'll only blow again, will it not?
So maybe a bluetooth speaker...? Anyone tried one? And if you like it, which one?

It's good to know that I'm not the only one to have this problem. Well... I don't know if it's a good thing, but whatever...
I've been using my N7 for exactly 1 month, and one day to the next, the sound is crispy. Under 40% everything sounds great, but above, it's very crispy, very ugly as if the speaker was saturated.
I've just contacted Google and they will replace it by a new one. I just hope that the one I will receive will not have any issue.
Hi everybody, when I use my klipsch r6i earbuds at a lower volume, I can head a static/white noise. When I listen to Netflix I can hear the static cut in and out as characters start and stop talking. I have Google now disabled and I'm not sure what to do. This happens on both my original device and its replacement. Thanks

Correct. I'm just giving up at this point and returning the original and the replacement. Just going to switch back to iOS. I don't really want to deal with the hassle of waiting for a determination between software and hardware problem only for it to be hardware and for me to be way past my return period.
I am using a ZE551KL while waiting on my ZE551ML to return from RMA. The ZE551KL is a decent phone but it does not measure up to the ZE551ML, but I am sticking with it while Asus takes their merry time on repairing my phone.
Anyway, has anyone had any success in increasing the volume levels of the back speaker? The loudness of the ringtones and notifications leaves much to be desired, at least for me. I have everything maxed and the Audio Wizard is on and set to Smart but I seldom catch my email notification and I carry my phone in my shirt's chest pocket. These are the same tones I used on my ZE551ML so they are recorded/saved loud enough.
Any help would be appreciated as I will passing this phone down to a family member once I get mine back from Asus... whatever year that occurs.
Yeah it's pretty pathetic. When i try to listen to a podcast out of the back speaker while I'm washing my face or doing other things where I can't have headphones in, I can't hear it over the sound of the water running.
I put it on "voice" and turn on "dialouge enhancement" and turn up all frequencies to the max and it makes it maybe a third louder, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. I guess you have to cut some corners with a 200 dollar phone. Skimping on the engineering and materials it would take to make an impressively loud compact speaker seems to be one of the places they tried to save money.
I wondered about buying an after market speaker replacement. And swapping it out.

this is a software issue with the Asus stock ROM.
Flash the Cyanogenmod ROM, and the sound output from both the external speaker and the headphone port is way, WAY better.

That might be possible, actually. I had to replace the screen on my ZE551KL and unlike the models with Intel hardware, the speaker unit seems to be connected by what looks like a miniature version of a 3.5 mm headphone plug. Seems like the vibration motor and speaker might be housed in the same rubber unit, though. I did a successful screen replacement, but I wasn't always certain exactly what I was looking at. :silly:
There's ZERO documentation or videos about the internals of the ZE551KL available online, but you can get a good luck at the audio plug leading into the speaker just by removing the 8 to 12 tiny screws that secure the backplate of the phone on. Keep in mind that will void your warranty though.
The speaker itself would be an easy switch. I've replaced some before and it was relatively easy. Can't see the Asus being different. It's nearly identical to the lgg3 in placement, interestingly enough.

This is a major problem for me. I use my phone to run a business. I've been waiting for a fix for the call muffled issue. Every one of my clients I talk to says "huh....what...I can barely hear you. ". It's unbelievable to me that it has not been addressed through NUMEROUS updates.
We should not have to be disablling hardware to have a PHONE do what it is designed to do....TALK.
yes I know there is a "workaround".
I am beginning to think it's a device limitation by the placement of the notice cancellation mic. My other phones they are located at the bottom of the device on the back...not the top.
Can you share this workaround please? It's indeed very annoying.. I'm experiencing not only low volume, but also people often complain they hear them self twice..

You lose the benefit of noise cancellation. Phone calls in your car or other potentially noisy environments will suffer from the increased backround noise.
Not really.... I havent had any complaints. I used to get a lot of complaints about being to quiet, or echoing. Since I've done the above about two months ago, no problems.
On Verizon. I used to get complaints that people couldn't hear me. I disabled advanced LTE and the problem has gone away. I think this was due to the other person not having LTE calling or my phone switching back and forth. I haven't tried reactivating it since 7.0 update but I'm sure the problem is still there. Only downside to this is I don't get internet when I'm in the phone.

After the "workaround" forget about using speakerphone. After applying the "fix" now when o try to use speakerphone, people can't hear me at all. I'm talking and they just say hello... hello...you there...hello...
It's extremely aggravating to be honest. A flagship PHONE that doesn't have the most basic / common phone features working. This is not new technology folks....noise cancellation has been out since oh....idk... Motorola droid ONE.
This is why I'm telling you it's not a software issue. It's a hardware/ design flaw. The noise cancellation mic is in the wrong place. It needs to be down by the bottom where it can pick up speech and reasonably determine that it's not far away...hence blocking it as background noise.
Maybe we should open a problem log with Google...
It was opened long ago and they don't address it in the last several updates. Hence why i believe it is a design flaw. Surely it can't be that difficult to solve with the resources Google has.
So I just bought a 6P this September, and it suffers this problem. I bought it off someone who had replaced it under warranty, and the manufacterure waranty expired in november I think. He had luckily purchased the extended warranty. Should send it in, and if I do, will I get a used phone in return? My biggest fear is getting a phone with a used battery that people abused and overcharged, and it won't hold a decent charge. Seems how the battery isn't easily serviceable as it should be, this is a problem for me.
