My room mate just bought a Droid X from a girl on craigslist. She seemed nice enough, but mentioned it had ties to her (ex?)boyfriend and she just wanted to get rid of it. Sold it to my roommate for $175. Me and my room mate went straight to the Verizon store to activate it, and they said it was on the lost and stolen list and they couldn't activate it. Been on the phone with Verizon for a while now, seems like they can't do anything. Any ideas? The girl wont answer her phone now.

Nope, not a damn thing you can do. If it's on VZW's black list, that's that. Unless the seller pay's their bill, it's most likely stolen, past due amount on the account or there is an ETF not paid.
You can take it to Cricket and flash it worse case scenario. We don't know if it is indeed stolen or not and if you guys think it is, I would contact the Police and make a report to try to get your money back and press charges.
No phone number, no pictures taken of the phone...man, that's a huge red flag right there for buying a used cell of craigslist. Sorry for your luck.
Make sure to always ask for the MEID number before buying ANY CDMA phone; VZW verifies it for free if it is OK to activate or if it's not clean. This type of thing happens a lot more then you even imagine.
Good luck.

Well, through email we had a name and she gave us a contact phone number, and we had no problem contacting her up until the sale, after that she didnt answer anymore. Shes not a verizon customer, based on the name associated with the email and the phone number she gave. There were pictures of the phone, but they may have just been pictures from the ads.
One thing I wished we had done was met at a verizon store and got it all checked right then and there.
Verizon gave my room mate the phone number and case number (i think) to take it to the fraud department and try to at least get his money back.

Same thing happened to my best friend, he bought a DX from a girl on CL, she wanted $200 for the device, but took $150 after some haggling (from the way he described her and her outfit she was probable a dancer/escort).
When he tried to set the device up on his VZW account, the CSR informed him that it was on the "Lost or Stolen" list and was given an incident #. He contacted the Dallas PD, turned out the girl was a stripper/escort/dopehead and had been jacking her customers for their wallets or cell phones.
He ending up, having to turn the device over to the PD and was out the $150.
After all of this (and at the time this was probably a [email protected] thing I pointed out to him), but you can pick up a pre-owned DX from VZW for $149 and they come with the full warranty.
Sorry to hear about your friends misfortune,
Hatxtrick
Rule of thumb, never buy a cdma phone (VZW or Sprint) without first checking with C.S if the ESN is clean.

Hello I have a HTC G2 and i lost it a few days ago so i reported it to tmobile and they sent me a new one
Now after receiving the new one My friend cleaning out his car found the phone and called me letting me know
My question is can i use this phone still even though i have a new one
is there a way to mod the phone so that TM will not know its the one i reported lost.
Please let me know as i will like to give this to my daughter thanks.
I'm guessing they would have the ESN/IMEI of the phone marked as bad so it cannot be used or activated anymore by a thief if it was stolen. There may be a way to get it work, but it would probably be illegal =/
what will be the procedure as if its a sim card how would they now what phone it is
Well, the most honest thing to do would be to call TMobile and ask which one they want back.
A less honest thing to do would be to call 611 from the old phone, which will probably work, say you found this phone and would like to know where to send it. At least you get to keep the newer phone.
Or, you could keep both and see if the old one is usable using a different SIM. But what kind of example does that set for your daughter?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using Tapatalk
Well I understand sending the phone back will be good but as i spent 150 dollars to get the replacement. I was told it will not be refunded so whats the point of sending it back.
I figure since i have a few tm phones and at times i switch phones it will not be a problem.
Well if putting custom software will that hide the phone as they say rooting the phone is not exceptable and you can void your warrenty. And when putting custom roms they never now also apps that are downloaded.

The ESN/IMEI are hard coded in a very deep level of the phone software somehow I think, so it doesn't matter what SIM you have in it; the network knows its being used. I'm sure there are [illegal] ways to change the ESN
For example if you look at phone people sell on Ebay, they are always labeled as "Clean ESN" or "Bad ESN". The bad ones are phones reported as stolen, etc and won't be able to be activated no matter what.

This is correct. If you've reported the phone lost/stolen, or the phone is associated to a delinquent or unpaid account, the provider (T-mo) will mark the phone as such, and the phone will not work with any other SIM card. So its only worth what it could be sold for for parts...
You spoke of rooting the phone, this won't clear the ESN, and this really isn't something we talk about at XDA (or most other reputable forums, for that matter) because it is highly illegal/frowned upon/etc.. Really no need for this thread to go in that direction...
Now the right thing to do would to call T-mo and ask which one they wanted back... maybe you can work something out with them even though they cant do a full refund. It would also mean that your account wouldnt be docked the cost or mark of having been given a phone under warranty, because most plans only allow a certain number of claims per time period.
Not true...you could change the esn and imei on blackberry. I did it because I was in the same situation. I just wanted to give mine to my bro. I'm sure if you could on blackberry you can with android. Android is more open I would think

Never said you can't, just said its something we don't talk about here.
It should still work on networks outside of the USA (or which ever country it is you're in). So I suppose you can unlock and debrand it and sell it to someone abroad.
Have you tried putting your replacement sim on the old phone? You really should call tmobile to see what can be done.

It will work just fine. I did the same thing and I asked the lady that worked for the phone's insurance before I ordered my replacement what would happen if I found it and she said you have 7 days to send back the replacement for a refund. She said if I find it after the 7 days it would work and be 100% usable but I wouldn't be able to send in the replacement for the refund... it is currently being used with no issues right now actually.

I have a brand new SGSIII, it was purchased using my son's upgrade and activated on his account for the requisite 24hours before he switched back to his old phone. I activated it on my account and used it for about a week before swapping out last night to try the Galaxy Nexus.
Tonight I decided to sell the Nexus and return to the SGSIII but when I tried to activate it the Sprint website told me it was already activated. I figured surely this was a mistake but thought since it was, in the past 24hrs, on my account maybe all I had to do was update PRL/profile and go back to using it.
So I did that and it turns out that someone else's phone number and information is in my phone! How could this possibly happen, the phone hasn't left my sight since we got it in the mail. Of course it's too late tonight to call and find the answers. (isn't it already morning in one of their call center locations?)
I've never had this happen, could someone at Sprint have stolen and sold the DEC number to another person? Turns out the number that it's showing is a New York City area code/exchange.
(my apologies if this should've gone in Q&A)
It looks like someone got a hold of your meid and activated it on their account or possibly did an "meid repair" on another phone. In the case of the latter, they may potentially file an insurance claim to get a new GS3 therefore blacklisting yours.
Maybe it's time to find out who activated the phone by following up with the number on your phone; or maybe look into your son's phone for that number (may be a friend of his).
If you haven't already, do NOT make or receive calls on the GS3. Doing so at least once will allow the thief to file a fraudulent insurance claim. Good luck.

Too late I'm afraid, someone called the phone (a friend of his) however I have my Sprint receipt with the DEC number on it showing that we legally purchased the phone, also a quick check of history will show that I was using the phone up to late Saturday night and then tried to re-activate it tonight, which isn't near enough time for me to have sent the phone from Alabama to New York and gotten it back again.
I'll be at Sprint first thing in the morning with my receipt, box it came in (with shipping info), phone box and phone. Hopefully it can be straightened out before anyone scams Sprint, or me.
that is kinda suck!
please keep us posted
At this point, I suggest that you not be hesitant to involve law enforcement in the event that Sprint is unable to help.
That sucks so much. I would hate to have to go through that. I feel for ya eso.

Okay so here's what I learned this morning from Sprint, and btw if you are like me and tend to have a few phones just hanging around not activated on your account you will want to pay close attention.
It took three phone calls to Sprint, the first this morning at 1:45am when I realized what had happened, got left on hold for an hour when the person went home after claiming she was getting her manager on the line to help. Called Sprint again at 7am and they sent me to the fraud department. The guy I spoke to in the fraud department claims it wasn't any attempt at fraud. Apparently the person whose information ended up in my phone had been having trouble with their phone for the past few days, so a Sprint customer rep tried to do a three way swap using a dummy EIN, well guess what dummy he grabbed the EIN from? Yeah, that would be me.
It seems when they are attempting this procedure they just randomly start swapping the last few digits of EINs associated with the same model of phone, in this case the SGSIII, to find one available for use and just happened to land on my number. Now I don't understand the reasons for this procedure, but it sure seems like a major screw up on Sprint's part.
Now magically between 1:40am cst this morning when I spoke to a friend of the person whose information ended up in my phone (she just so happened to call the number last night when I turned the phone on) and told them I'd be calling Sprint's fraud department first thing this morning and 8am when I talked to the fraud department, the EIN had been released, so I don't believe this was an accidental EIN grab at all.
Now I'm wondering if my other two currently de-activated phones are at risk of having their EINs hi-jacked and how to prevent it. I'm not a novice at this, I always keep a de-activated device around as my insurance plan in case I lose or break my current phone. I've never had this happen before and I am not impressed.
So after a fretful night with little sleep the problem has been resolved and the phone is re-activated on my account.
I very much appreciate the comments and advice.
Glad to hear it eso.

Hi everyone,
So I have read a ton of conflicting information on insurance for the Nexus 6p ( only looking at Square Trade and Asurion not Nexus Protect)
So here are my questions if anyone that has actually made a claim with Asurion or Square Trade (most interested in Square trade at this point) please let me know, thanks!!
1- If a claim is made with Square trade and the phone is not repairable, do they have Nexus 6p's as replacements? Or is it going to be like Asurion where they will send you a "like" device?
2- If the phone is repairable through Square trade, do they support repairs for this device? Or will they just send me a monetary value?
3- Is it confirmed that Asurion will in fact drop your insurance (Verizon) if you activate the Nexus 6p on your line? (I have not activated it on Verizon yet, using google fi right now, I know they have a protection plan but I will be using this plan only when I run out of minutes on Verizon line, grandfathered in so not going to be able to use google fi insurance either)
I have Asurion on my line, I want to purchase Square Trade for my Nexus 6P since Asurion will not replace it if necessary but I want to make sure that Square Trade will fix my device if I need it to be fixed or replace with a Nexus 6P. Thanks everyone!!
(Nexus Protect is not an option for me, I purchased on Swappa but since I have Asurion I can submit for Square Trade)
The one time I ever had to use my SquareTrade warranties they actually gifted me the money to buy a new item. This was not for a phone so that may be different.
I have had both and have filed. Claims through both. For both my Nexus 5 and my Nexus 6 I was either able to send the phone in for repair or fix locally and send in the reciept for a full refund of the price of the repairs. In the case of the Nexus 6 screen I had to send it in due to the screen being so new that my local repair shop couldn't get a screen in stock. (Ran over by several cars). Square trade ended up sending me another phone as mine wasn't repairable. My Nexus 5 was also sent to Square trade and was sent back a new phone as the board where the charging port connected to was damaged along with a bad screen. Both times phones had custom RoMs on them and yet they were totally painless experiences and I would highly recommend them. I went with Nexus protect on my 6P and I am hoping I didn't make a mistake doing so. I can't answer the Asurion question as the times I have had Asurion, I was insuring phones purchased through my provider.

It should be noted that both phones were refurbished units however all the phones you get from Asurion will also be refurbished units so if this is a issue then you might want to research other options. I personally have only had one issue out of 8 refurbished phones so I'm not one to complain like many users.

I actually work for Verizon and I can confirm that Asurion sends refurbished devices. It's a fairly simple process. However, Verizon's policy towards non-Verizon devices is that the insurance would not cover it. The device has to be purchased from Verizon or an authorized retailer. One other thing is that when you switch over the device (usually by switching the sim card from another device) the insurance would stay on your line and you would continue to be billed for it (Seriously -_-). So you would have to take it off of your line either by calling, stopping into a store, or by going into your My Verizon account and managing the features on your line.
One other thing to note is that once you remove the insurance from your line, you cannot add it back unless it's an open enrollment period and you meet the requirements or you purchase a new device on that line.

Hmm.
I have bought devices from third parties and they were covered for warranty and theft.
I've filed both types of claims on devices that I ddid not buy from Verizon.
Could be that since they were Verizon branded, it didn't matter.

That should work. I don't want to guarantee anything as far as the Note 5 but as long as that device is the active device on your line at the time of the claim. Asurion's website might not let you make a claim if you just switch over the device (I've never tried it so I couldn't tell you) so you might just have to call insead.
Glad I could help!

Like you said, those devices would have been Verizon branded. In this case the Nexus 6p isn't Verizon branded. It's technically not even certified to work with Verizon's network by Verizon...

With Asurion it seems like it's hit or miss with whether or not it's a new phone or a refurb. I've seen both ways. It also depends on how new to the market the phone you're claiming is. For example, my mom dropped her brand new iPhone 6S in the toilet the day after she got it (*facepalm* -_-, it's actually quite a funny story tbh) and Asurion sent a brand new phone still in the original packaging because at this point the 6S had only been out for a month or something like that when she got it so Asurion hadn't had any refubs to send out.

The only way that I know how to do this is if you have asurion on your line already.
Some say they will drop you, some say they won't so I don't know for sure as I have not gone ahead with the Square Trade warranty yet, (waiting to see if I can find a coupon code or a sale).
What I did since I have coverage on my line was requested a letter from Asurion stating that I am covered for my line (asurion covers the line so whatever device you have on there is what is covered at the time, that's what they told me). My plan is when I am ready to use Squaretrade to submit my coverage letter to them and let them know what my phone has current coverage. I have put my sim in the Nexus 6P and I switch between phones. As per one of the last comments, I would have to call Asurion to cancel my coverage, (which I don't want to do because I want to keep it for my other phone on my line.). When I looked at my plan, I saw that coverage was till there however, I mainly use my note 5 so that is the phone that is more often on the line. So now I just have to work on the Square Trade side of this so I can get coverage for my Nexus 6P as Asurion does not cover this device. I did speak with Squretrade about this and they said that a letter showing proof of insurance from your insurance company is valid which is what I got from Asurion.
Hope this helps.

I’m not sure if this applies to me then. I’m on T-Mobile and don’t purchase insurance. I did purchase Square trade for my note 4 but it was new from T-Mobile. I emailed them just in case but not sure if they cover used devices. Anyone know if they cover new devices sold on Swappa? Would I just send the PayPal Invoice? From the contract from my note 4 I got this extract so wondering if they do covered used devices. Hopefully I wouldn’t have to wait and use the manufacturer warranty before I could use SquareTrade.

You can normally get them from someone that has Squaretrade.
So, I'm unsure if this is the "right" place for this(I assume there isn't one), but you guys are typically very helpful so figured I'd give it a shot.
Friend of mine is on Project Fi (as am I). Apparently he ordered a replacement 6P from Project Fi- MANY months ago. Like, eight, I think he said. He received the replacement when he was out of town(father passed away) and just kind of forgot about it (apparently he thought he was having an issue w the headphone jack but it ended up being the headphones themselves). While they were supposed to charge him after 21 days, apparently, they never did.
I asked him to go to his Fi account, and it shows the second phone, but "not yet active". Now, as far as I know whether he changed phones or not, they should've billed him after 3 weeks. However, now his moms phone died apparently, and he's hoping to give her the other 6p temporarily (he realizes the ramifications if its damaged, or, they eventually catch on and charge him, he'll be charged outright, full price). I guess his intent is to loan her the other 6p until payday end of month and then get her a new phone and send it back.
My question is if he does this, since his moms on T-Mo's network- as far as Fi is concerned, it would still not be 'activated' correct? They dont receive some sort of notification if that phone is activated, UNLESS its on the Project Fi network, correct? i.e. if he took his mom to the t-mo store and got the right size SIM and activated on their network? Its not blacklisted or anything shady like that- and i suspect, Fi will eventually catch on, and bill him accordingly, but, in the interim...
Before anyone says otherwise- I explained this is probably not the best way of handling it. But I also sympathize. She's in poor health, he cant afford another at the moment, and he's looking at it as a 'band aid'.
