Hello,
I'm planning on buying a Nexus 6p. At the moment I'm using a Nexus 4 (non-rooted).
Is there any way to transfer all my apps and data from the N4 to the N6P?
I heard that Helium won't work in this case. Is that true?
Thank you very much in advance

I believe Helium requires root, as does Titanium Backup. Transferring your apps wouldn't be hard in the slightest, during the setup process on the Nexus 6P, the SetupWizard asks you if you'd like to restore apps from a previous phone, so that would be simple, however locally stored game data could be lost, say if your game doesn't save to a cloud, and uses a save file instead. Cheers!

Helium doesn't require root but a lot of ratings say, that it doesn't support encrypted marshmallow devices. and the n6p is encrypted out of the box, right?

To be honest, not sure about encryption, and wow I had no idea Helium functioned without root!

I used to have a Vibrant, and had rooted it and running the various excellent Team Whiskey ROMs. I paid for the full version of Titanium Backup, and it was a great tool.
But I don't want to root my Nexus S.
Call me silly, call me paranoid, I dunno. I just don't feel the need to root it. I'm very happy with it stock.
But I'd still like to back up my phone, in case of catastrophic failure. I'd also like to do the same for my wife's phone, in case she drops this one down the toilet accidentally like she did her iPhone....
So, is there any decent backup tool out there for those of us who DON'T want to root our phones?

I understand not wanting to root the N1 but the NS bootloader re-lock is as trivial as the bootloader unlock and if you know what rooting is then you probably already have adb installed. I don't see why you wouldn't. There are not cons at all...
MyBackup Pro, pay for it, you can back up phone settings, calendar, contacts, sms, mms, etc..etc. both to the internal storage OR auto upload to free cloud storage!

Yep, I have ADB already installed, because I want to write software for the phone.
That being said, there are a few downsides that I can see:
1) Rooting the phone leaves it open to malware attack. Yes, I know that SuperUser requests access from the user prior to granting elevated privileges, but the possibility remains. One reason I like Ubuntu: sudo.
2) I'm leaving the country for a year, and need to support my wife and her Nexus S via email during that time. I want to keep my environment essentially the same as hers. I could root both of our phones, but she's not a geek like I am, and is much more likely to download a program that would take advantage of root.
3) From what little I've read, unlocking the bootloader erases everything. Not a huge deal, but a nuisance I'd like to avoid.
So I'd like to get a backup program that my wife and I could both use, that doesn't require root (to protect her), and I have absolutely no problem paying for it.
Thanks!

I don't know that I trust the "free cloud storage". Is there a way to backup to my personal server? I'm running Ubuntu with sftp...
I have been a long time user of Titanium Back Up Pro and its been both magical and wonderful all these years and now Koush has pushed out Carbon...
Does anyone have any insights as to why it would be better to move over to Carbon for backup purposes BESIDES SYNC. and besides the sync feature they pretty much both do the same thing or is one app better than the other for any reason.
Just looking for some user feedback on who has used both and which they prefer...
Haven't tried carbon but I assume there is more compatibility/support from other apps/devs for Titanium. Will have to look into carbon.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
If Carbon does what it says on the tin, the single most compelling feature is to be able to backup and restore market apps & and data without needing root. That's got to be compelling for folks on devices like the N7 where the least-resistance path to rooting involves wiping the device.
The least attractive feature seems to be that it requires a PC...

Yes i totally forgot about the fact that you do not need to root the device. but when i got my n7 first thing i did was turn it on made sure it worked and from there rooted within the first hour haha
but that is true... for those that dont look into root...
Well I'm no expert in this area, so my feedback will be purely based on user experience with no knowledge on how the two work.
Carbon is nicer, cleaner, simpler, and much easier to navigate than TB. I used TB before Carbon came out, but once I used Carbon I stopped using TB.
Just simple feedback from a typical Android user
I'm gonna try carbon next time I flash anything on my s2 (stock 4.2.2 on my n7 and keeping it that way) but I will do a titanium backup too.
Titanium backup is the best for many reasons and has been for awhile. Something really great would ever be able to replace it.
Can you freeze apps, make individual backups, clear data and caches on carbon?? Batch restore some apps with data, then others without? Would need all these options to compete.....for me anyway.
Gonna check out carbon. Will post my experience when I use it.
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
Carbon is more 'user-friendly' than Titanium but has fewer features... also, you don't need root.
But just running it on my (rooted) Nexus 7... there are four apps (out of the 200+ apps I have installed) designated as BACKUP DISALLOWED... (you have to scroll down to the bottom of the screen to see this).
They are...
TricksterMod
Argos (a shopping app for the UK catalogue store)
AdAway
ZArchiver
Carbon will not backup these apps... not even the APKs...(aside from the userdata associated with them).
But Titanium will...
Not quite sure why this should be... even Gemini App Manager (http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.seasmind.android.gmappmgr&hl=en) will backup these APKs... and also doesn't require root.
Very puzzling...
I'll be sticking with Titanium. It does what I need it to do. And backs up EVERYTHING!

...with TWRP, Titanium, ChainFires SU (although recently being playing around with Koush's new SuperUser app), Terminal Emulator...and a root capable file manager like X-Plore.

Why would I need a toolbox?

I'm likely upgrading soon to the new one, but I want to easily transfer all my stuff to the new one. I have over 500 apps, I use this thing every day, so I need a way to transfer Everything easily. Titanium Backup won't really work because I have used almost all the space on the device; and to make a full backup I'd have to use less than half the space. Unless you have an alternative solution.
Thanks in advance.
Nandroid using TWRP to 8G memory stick on USB OTG cable.
After rooting, Install TiBu on new one.
Restore from nandroid via same media on OTG using TiBu.
Never restore data from system apps.
Cumbersome, but if you absolutely need all 500 apps and data because you use them all regularly.....

I have CWM
I have a 32GB device, not a tiny 8GB one.
You didn't say that.
Use a 32G drive.
Install TWRP through GooManager.
Code:
adb backup -all -f c:/backup.ab
will use your tablet's native backup feature to save your apps and app data to your PC hard drive. On your new device go to Titanium Backup > Menu > Extract from ADB backup.

it's one of the requirements to root your device unless you used a method similar to the Exynos exploit for certain Samsung devices (But last I checked something like that didn't exist for Nexus 7 2012).
You'd just need adb set up on your PC. If you aren't sure if you have it set up you can redo it here (Plus has a little bit of extra info which may be helpful later down the road): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387527

Exactly. In fact I have no notifications, except the ones I want, which are almost never. I use apps like Startup Auditor and Autorun Manager to prevent apps from running in the background and giving unwanted notifications.
I use apps like Ad Detector and Default App Manager to make sure none of my apps have pesky popup or notification ads, and easily remove them if they do.
I force close or disable apps I don't want running, like gmail and occasionally maildroid, gallery, and others.
The only somewhat annoying thing with having over 500 apps is that the Play store frequently tells me about all these updates that are ready. But I just turn off automatic updates for all apps and once a month or so I'll go in and manually update the apps I want to.
By the way, I went camping recently for 5 days and was very surprised and happy that I was still at 40% battery life by the end of the camping trip.
Sadly, however, during the camping trip I got a tiny scratch on the screen, because like a moron I procrastinated getting a screen protector
Yeah, I'd really like an answer from the person who said you'd have 300 notifications! I don't know if that post was an accident, not very well thought out, or simply just an ignorant and pointless remark. At any rate, I don't know why anyone would think that having a lot of apps installed would lead to a lot of notifications. The only answer that makes any sense to me is that it was simply an ignorant comment....

Hey! This may sound like a noon question. Ive been rooting my phones for almost a decade and never cared about loosing all my data and apps during the process.
However, now I'm about more concerned about it, and was wondering if anyone could recommend me a free program or app to make a complete data and apps backup?
Thanks....

Nothing that I can think of before unlocking the BL, which is why I do it as soon as I take the phone out of the box.
How about OnePlus switch app that is already present at the phone. You can do backups and restores from the app.

But getting the backup from internal storage to somewhere less volatile is difficult - large files, slow even over USB 3 connection. Oh for a microUSB card...
Hi,
Oneplus Switch is said to transfer app data along with apps.
However, the games and apps installed by Oneplus Switch are fresh and new. No configuration or save game.
Did I miss anything?
Thank you
Are you sure it transfers appdata? I bet its up to the developer to allow it or not.
It's said to transfer app data since version 2.
Most of the apps I transferred did not have the data properly moved, but a few did.
I was transferring from a rooted OP3T to my bone-stock unrooted 6T 8/256 in hopes of avoiding root for backup /restore. I'm normally a Titanium user for backup and transfer to new devices.
That said, otherwise transition was smooth so far. Have most things working. Nice phone.
Interestingly right thumbprint works great but left is hit or miss for fingerprint reader so far.

I had some settings actually transferred, this is nice. But I could not find any app with my old data (over 50 apps). Coming from OP One however, may be the cause. It was TWRP and rooted, too.

Too bad games are not generally using Play Games Cloud. However, half of the "Play Games Cloud" compatible games I have didn't successfully get the data back after reinstall. It looks like it's still unstable...
I wonder why this source says that app+app data is migrated:

Also other thread is happy with OnePlus switch results: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/help/program-app-to-backup-phone-data-t3864583
So only reliable and full backup+restore with app+data is root+titanium backup?

This seems to be the case. I have not rooted my 6t; first phone I haven't had to root. Enough things either transferred via Switch or made it through one cloud or another that it wasn't worth rooting just for this.
