I'm currently on stock Rom on the Nexus 6P Android 6.0.1 (Sprint) and everytime I try the hotspot within android settings I receive an error message.
Is there any way to get Wi-Fi Tethering (Hotspot) working on the Nexus 6p?
Edit: I believe I have found a way to hotspot on Sprint. So far I have been tethering with no issues and did not have to edit any build.prop. You do need root, that's the only prerequisite.
I used the app Wifi Tether Router from Google Play.
I also used these settings:
"For Google Nexus Devices using this config
Interface wlan0
Method 0 - Auto
Channel 1
Encryption wpa2-psk
"No Firmware Reload" <- UNCHECKED "
How would this work on T-mobile? Tethering isnt blocked for us but it is really slow

Does anyone of a non root or root wifi tether app that works with the Nexus 5?
I plan to root the phone but I'm still not sure if I want to install another ROM since it is snappy already. ( I usually root to OC and use Wifi Tether )
WiFi hotspot is built into the phone as is. There is no need to install an app.

Not necessary as this is built in to stock.
Thanks guys! Yeah I was just wondering...
I don't want AT&T finding out and then charging me the hotspot fee.
is built in tether 100% secure like other apps? i read that built in tether has many security problems!

***Does Not Work on Sprint unless you pay extra***
Where is the icon for it? Or how do I launch it? not seeing it anywhere......
Settings>More>Teathering & portable hotspot.
I`ve tried different roms and my hotspot is not working, is sending me to the t-mobile upsell page.
I have unlimited data with T-Mobile with 2.5 gbs included of hotspot. I already past my hotspot data but still running it. I noticed if I have my APN Protocol IPv4 it let's me use my phone data as a hotspot even after I used up my provided hotspot data. If I switch it to IPv6, it bans me from using my data as a hotspot

Okay so pretty much using the built in tether app is a no go. I'm not going to pay for hotspot. If anyone knows of a WiFi tether app that works with nexus 5 let everyone know. (I'm on AT&T). Will be receiving phone first week in Dec.

The built in one doesn't work because it tags all packets with a "hotspot" data tag which is then being denied by your carrier because it's hotspot data which you didn't pay for. Either the internal program needs to be modified to not tag the data, or another app which doesn't tag data should be used to get a free wireless hotspot.

Exactly - this is true for ALL Android handsets running Android 4.3 and above.
Previously, we've been able to get away with it unless your phone was running a carrier-specific ROM with the packet tagging enabled - but now it's part of the Android subsystem.
If your carrier is setup to track this, they now can.
I'm lucky with mine - they seem to only care if I tether a laptop to my phone. If I tether a tablet or another phone, it's fine.. Different traffic I guess! So I just use a VPN on my laptop, and it goes undetected.
Here's a workaround for the uninitiated ones.... Should work on most mobile devices. You'll probably need a VPN if you want to tether a laptop.

Make sure to follow directions closely.
I used a program called SQLite Editor which can be found at the play store. (YOUR PHONE MUST BE ROOTED)
Open SQLite Editor.
Navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/
Edit settings.db by adding a line "tether_dun_required" and set the value to "0".
Also make sure your APN settings use IPV4.
I've rebooted my phone after doing this and the edit stuck and tethering worked.
Best of luck!
Excellent man, it worked like a charm, thanks
I solved with this app: WiFi Tether Router
on Google Play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
the developer has done a compatible update
I contacted the developer via email and he told me after a few hours
the developer advised me to select these settings
Interface wlan0
Method 0 - Auto
works also with
Interface wlan0
Method 2
this one seems to work for me.. wifi works but i choose to usb tether https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en
also paid version is better then free
I would really like to bypass the T-Mobile 2.5GB limit.
I am thinking that I may not root my Moto X (non-dev ed) after all -- it seems to be a losing battle. We are lucky that jcase found a way to work around the restriction Verizon/ATT placed on the KitKat update, but what about the next update?
Anyway, I am writing this post because I am investigating a way to tethering wirelessly w/o root. Wifi tethering does not seem to be working after KitKat, w/o root. So, I am looking into PdaNet's Bluetooth tethering. I haven't gotten my Moto X yet (should come today), but I am using my Galaxy Nexus to test, and I found an annoying problem.
In short, it works. However, when I tethered to my Nexus 7, PdaNet seemed to require my Nexus 7 to be connected to a Wifi hotspot -- any hotspot. The hotspot itself doesn't even have to be connected to the internet. If my Nexus 7's wifi is off, or if it's not connected to a hotspot, PdaNet's bluetooth tethering won't work. I can work around the problem by bringing my old Galaxy Nexus with me all the times, and use it to create a fake wifi hotspot (as I said, it does not need to be connected to the internet -- the actual connection will be provided by my Moto X.) However, I wonder if anyone knows if there's a way around it, or did I simply do it wrong?
In the meantime, my journey to look for a way to tether w/o root continue ...
I've used a rooted Galaxy S6 for the longest and used WiFi Router / VPN to hide my usage with great success, I now have a Nexus 6P which I don't want to root, is there a method that works to connect to a Amazon Fire TV?
I know I can PDANet+ / Clockwork Tether via USB with a laptop but I need to connect to my Fire TV. I have MetroPCS and they some how know everything if it's not routed through a VPN and I'm on 7.1.1 so it's hard to figure out anything without rooting. Any help?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
yeah I'm on tmobile and have been tethering with foxfi which is pdanet. Before nougat I was able to tether via wifi now with the cable only. Also I am rooted, but don't know any other way to enable. I have netprovsion tethering = true in build prop as well. Idk let me know what other methods you used.
You can use WiFi Tether Router enable VPN Route in it and use a VPN and it'll work but I don't want to root like you are.

i finally rooted my moto X pure. hotspot does not work on its own and i dont know how to edit the settings for it. So i tried looking for apps but some of them that i once had does not work.
Barnacle doesnt work
Wifi tether router gives a giant mcafee warning stating its a threat with Android/Bokbe.A!Gen or Malware for basic
FoxFi i have to pay 8 dollars for it when i didnt need to before
clockworkmod works but its usb tether
any other options?
Is your carrier restricting you from using your data plan to host a WiFi hotspot? Mine works just fine with no additional apps required. When I first turned it on, it made sure my data plan supported the feature then worked as expected.

Verizon?
Usually tethering is only blocked if you have an unlimited data plan

When you turn on the stock app, is there an error message or anything? The stock tether app usually works well.

should be able to just add this line
Code:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
to /System/build.prop
with a file manager and a text editor
Edit: removed strike code

_New World Order (NWO)_
yeah i tried that, doesnt work. thanks.
ill either unroot entirely or switch to another OS
use clockworkmod on a pc and make that pc a gateway for a wireless router (set pc ip address manually to something static) configure the router properly, then just connect all your other devices to that wireless router
UPDATE:
Wifi tether creator replied to my email saying mcafee has a false positive on it because its root, mcafee never tested it.
but what i did discover is this. when i played with the wifi tether app, they have the ability to allow tether completely wifi. in it contained was a LTE patch to allow tethering and it worked. if anyone is able to get the patch out, then jackpot we have tether ability

Right, the above build.prop edit eliminates this phone home verification. I've tested it successfully also on a cricket unlimited plan.

Hello! I want to share my Nexus 6P's WiFi connection with other people over WiFi, but when I enable WiFi Hotspot it automatically disables WiFi. Is there any way around this? It works on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge but not on my Nexus 6P. My Nexus is rooted and I've tried fqrouter2 but it just says "Failed to start wifi repeater: wifi chipset [WARNING: linker: Warning: unable to normalize "null"] is not supported". Is there something in the build.prob or any software that could do this? A diagram of one use case:
Hotel WiFi, allows just one connection - My phone < Laptop, other phone.
