Hey everyone,
I was hoping to stay on stock and just replace the kernel for maximum stability and battery. I was planning on cycling through the different options and seeing how they felt. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm not looking for features in my kernel just battery life. I'm not really having any issues with my battery now just trying to see if i can make it above 4hrs screen on time.

Franco Kernel has a strong philosophy in "flash and forget" and is always dependable for stability and battery life. ElementalX you can also "flash and forget" but allows for more customization.
Have you actually tried just leaving it as stock and seeing if it does what you need?
I used Elemental when I first got it. When I reflashed for an update I left it on stock and to be honest it is more than stable enough and the battery lasts longer than I need it too, so not going to bother with a custom kernel now.
I'll reconsider if I find a specific function I need that isn't available through stock, but until then its fine. I only need root for a few apps to function these days, Google have implement most of the other hacks I used to do as standard these days.
I would be interrested in good basic starting settings that I could start to setup myself. Now on Kylo kernel 4.9 version. And I would like to get better battery life when using the phone and when it's in my pocket rather than max performance.

Stock PA and matr1x kernel are both really good, with matr1x the battery life is about 5 hours screen, without screen it is just 1%/2 hrs.
I've tried franco and faux kernel too, but franco was a bit laggish and faux has terrible performance for me...slow ui, lots of framedrop in games...
There is no best kernel. All of them offer something a little different than the other. Some kernels work better with a ROM than others. My advice to to read up on them. Find out what you want out of it. Flash one and run it for a couple days. Make sure you let the battery drain past 20% then charge it without interrupting it. That's the surest way to gain maximum battery saving benefits. Just try them out until you find the one that's right for you. Happy flashing.
its actually made so that you dont have to worry about this stuff. kernel is just a cog. it twists and turns, who cares. unless you know exactly what youre missing of course. :cyclops:

I am going to stick with the Stock + Rooted combination for now with Xposed modules. Would like suggestions for which kernel provides best stability, battery life, and performance. I know EX, Franco, and AK are always safe choices on custom roms but I've never tried custom kernels on stocks roms. Suggestions or personal experience reviews are greatly appreciated.
I just asked this question not too long ago and landed on using Franco's kernel. I will mention I'm not rooted, so I am just using the settings that come with Franco's kernel. However, I have seen improvements in battery life and Bluetooth connectivity that I was hoping to see.
I've been running Franco for a while. It's really a toss up between Franco and ElementalX. Both have amazing stability and battery life, both can be tweaked eve further from the "stock" behavior through things such as battery profiles. I haven't done any of that, you have to pay for and use their app to do so. I've just left it at "stock" behavior.

Just switched to Franco kernel a few days ago and my battery life has drastically increased.
I'm looking for a custom ROM hoping to have DT2W feature and a battery life closest to stock. Any opinions otherwise I'm going back to stock.
The latest Broken had really good battery life, but it doesn't have d2tw. Its five row keyboard takes up a huge amount of screen, but I could have done something about that. The problem I have with Broken and all the other custom ROMs I've tried except AICP is that games won't install from the Play store. I only keep a couple of time wasters on my phone, but games like Limbo and The Room Two refuse to install on most custom ROMs I've tried. There's a more thorough list of incompatible games a few weeks back in the CM13 thread.
AICP is the only custom ROM I can install any game I want on, and it is pretty good for idle battery life lately too, especially if you switch SELinux to permissive. I think SEPolicy denials chew up some battery. It has dt2w implemented and working good as well as just about every other custom ROM feature you might want. For my usage, recent AICP nightlies have been comparable with stock battery life; maybe a little worse but no problem getting through the day. You can probably get a little better SOT with optimized stock if you tune up Frankenclark, but for me the difference isn't dramatic enough to give up the custom ROM features. I can't see any hotplug in recent AICP builds from kernel adiutor. AICP used to have a hotplug, but it used to absolutely eat battery for me compared with stock. Whatever changes have been implemented recently have made a big improvement with respect to battery life. Once a hotplug driver gets worked back into the AICP kernel I think AICP might be on par with optimized stock with respect to battery.

Kernel adiutor works. There just doesn't seem to be a hotplug. You can turn cores on and off manually, but they won't plug automatically as load changes.

Flashing Franco's Kernel (which is geared towards extending battery life) and Franco's Nap Time (which puts your phone in deep doze mode as soon as the screen goes off) will give you better battery life, but with a trade-off negativity affecting the performance and functionality of your phone. You have to decide how important extending battery life is to you.

I use Cortex Rom, I see someone else recommended Pure Nexus, which I think is an insanely overrated Rom. I've never used a rom to improve battery life but Pure Nexus gave me crap battery life compared with stock and was buggy to boot. The downside with Naptime is that everything pretty much stops working when the screen is off unless you exempt the app from power saving. That includes music playing apps, email apps, text messaging apps--whatever you want to work you need to exempt from power saving. If you let Nap Time turn off your proximity sensors then the only way to get your phone back in on is by hitting the power button.
Hey guys! This is my first topic on XDA, so I apologize in advance if I do something wrong.
I love my 6P and since it's a Nexus, there's always some tinkering so I can make it even better and suitable for my needs. I pretty much like stock-ish ROMs with that touch of Pixel phones and I find that original Google kernel serves me well in terms of battery life and overall performance (I'm probably one of the rare dudes to state something like this). But original kernel is very limited in terms of other options custom kernels offer, like gestures, screen color control, audio boost, etc. Regarding custom kernels, I never had any good experience with battery life, even when setting the governors on powersave/noop/cfq or any other I tried.
So, I guess what I'm asking is - can you recommend me a kernel that's exactly like the Google's out-of-the-box, but with those added options I mentioned above? Or is there some way to restore settings on custom kernels to default Google's settings?

I keep falling back on ElementalX, it offers enough customization, and still has decent battery depending on your settings. There's a million and 1 ways to configure it. I tried other very popular, more feature rich (they have everything, plus the kitchen sink, and sometimes cupboards too), but the battery drain is just too high for my liking. Not even using the phone, and every time I wake it with one of those kernels, it's dropped another 8-10%, without being used.
I haven't tried them all though. Many of the slimmer kernels don't offer a way to disable touchboost, so I rule those out as soon as I see that.

Oh, ElementalX was my first choice too, but suddenly that too started to drain my battery quickly after a while. At first I thought it happened because of some app, but when I flashed default kernel everything got back to normal. That's why I wonder is there a way to copy those default settings and apply them to some custom kernel.
You think disabling touchboost is a big deal? Cause of battery life or something else?

Wow, I stumbled upon some other loooooong post about governors, but this one is amazing! I didn't know touchboost has that much influence on battery. I will try this out, thanks mate!
I get better battery life on ElementalEx over stock kernel without a doubt. I am running interactive with Ghost Pepper profile and touch boost disabled. If battery life is your main consideration you could try Franco's Kernel but you are sacrificing some phone performance to get the better battery life. I found the drop off in performance very noticeable but his kernel has its fans. I think ElementalEx has a better balance between performance and battery life.

Touchboost wastes battery because it boosts you to 1248000 every single time you touch the screen, and it holds it for like a second or two. It does make your phone faster, and responsive though.
