The camera problem is NOT about compression but about noise reduction, made by mainly a blur filter.
The Sony Xperia Z jpg compression in my opinion is excellent. Bigger size not always means better quality. Look at the difference between mp3/aac... In Z pics there aren't any jpg artifacts, they preserve a very good dynamic range (to be a jpg), etc.
I guess Sony is the only one who is able to solve such issue.
I just installed the mod and it seems to work. I took a quick test photo and a test video and I will make more later and see how they compare to the original camera.
I was a bit weary about installing it first since the Cybershot mod didn't work but this one seems to be totally OK.

I disagree, a bigger size tend to have more detail about the pic.
interested to see if this improves the images
Same quality here.
root needed?
I guess this mod do more for video than for pictures even if the discussions in other threads about the 100% setting indicated slightly better picture quality.
Yes root needed. But in normal mode only with change exponation to around +0.7 and indoor shots in low light is better now.
You can not see can big changes in here. If yes, it's just about 10% or 15%
Would this work on a ZL?

Thanks tommybrrr, video really is record under 20Mbps for 1080/720 video (orig. 17.5Mbps and 12Mbps) & 312KBits audio (orig. 156KBps).
But photo wise I not sure, output seems similar and never increase in file size also even though it is obvious change at media_profiles.xml
Thanks for your kind work, will keep this for the video bit-rate if no any errors occur, so far seems ok, don't have any auto FC in background.
a cmw file is it possible?
Interesting,
Any other feedback about this mod? i would like to have more reviews before testing it
Is it worth to swap with cyber-shot mod, anybody tested ?

Yes, seems like most, if not all the bad things for picture captering happen in the Sony camera driver and not in the camera app - and the driver is way harder to modify than the camera app
If I find any real way to improve picture quality I will do it.
I think the S5 takes great photos but as a keen amateur photographer I do find the photos to be over sharpened. Is there a way to adjust the amount of sharpening? What happens if you use another camera app, do the results of the images differ?
I don't own the S5 as yet, I'm currently researching which phone to get. It's between the S5 & Sony Z2 so far.

Many ways. But perhaps the best starting point would be to install one of the custom camera apps aimed at serious hobbiests. You'll find better and /or more image processing options.
And of course there is always post processing e.g. lightroom, dxo, photoshop, et al.
.
So if using another camera app then S5 doesn't apply it's default jpeg processing? On occasion I would like to edit photos in Photoshop/Lightroom but I would need photos either minimal processing so that I've got some room to edit.

yep, I assume that we need to wait for the release of the new camera API with android L as it brings support for RAW imaging (i.e. no preprocessing of images before camera apps can apply filters etc)
I recommend you to use camera fv-5 app, because it has adjustable image parameters such as contrast, sharpness and saturation (although saturation doesn't work on galaxy phones). My personal settings to get the purest look while avoiding a too flat image is sharpness = 7 (out of 36, 36 is default value) and contrast = 3 (out of 10, 5 is default value).
I hope it helps
My XT 1095's camera improved A LOT after the last two camera app upgrades.
It performs much better under low light and it stopped doing that horrible post-processing effect that made every picture look like a watercolor painting.
Am I the only one?
Unfortunately, yes. You are the only one.
Is this an update to the Motorola camera? Do you know the version number of the release?
I've not noticed any improvement recently.
Camera version is 5.0.47.7
Sadly, I don't have any before and after pics but the change is very noticeable. A lot of my friends also started highlighting how good my pictures looked, and they had no bias. The horrible denoise effect is completely gone, too.

So you guys have the latest Google Play update? Because I have read the reviews for the Moto Camera on the store page and they all says that the updates sucks, so I am sticking with my old version.

i also used this to correct ae basically my device is configured like the moto x with adjusted noise reduction algo.

its basically doing minimal noise reduction in the luma channel and all heavy stuff in color noise .
is that the brightest the image gets in low light ? i can probably force slower shutter

yep that's the brightest without flash. btw is it possible to get almost similar low light performance as lg g2-3 ( other imx135 devices) ?
great work tho. :good:

Hello,
I just found out, that the longest shutter speed on the S8 is only 10 seconds.
Even on my old OPPO R7 Plus the max. shutter speed is 30 seconds (which is best fort low-light/night photography).
Is there a work-around or maybe a modified app, which enables longer shutter-speeds on the S8?
Thank you!
yea samsung manual mode sux hard use lg g4,5,6

Get a tripod and layer 3+ shots
Unless you find someone who's able to recode the camera app, or add a new shooting mode you can get your phone steady, turn off image stabilization and take some shoots with a 10 second shutter speed. You can layer them on the PC and achieve a similar effect, plus you can try the RAW-Mode of your phone... (tell me if it's any good)!:good:

Open the zero mod camera app,
And change the shutter speed of 10s become the one you like. Mine changed to 30s

You can only achieve light painting/light trails effect through this way. If the exposure doesnt remain for more than 10 second you won't be able to get bright picture and hence less details. The point is to capture as much info and not the light trailing.
As far as i know, there is no way. Yes there's one way but i wouldn't consider rooting my phone for it. Extremely stupid of Samsung here. Even the cheaper brads such as oppo etc has longer shutter time. Also it's a shame that upto Galaxy note 10 it's not supported
In case u r trying to achieve this you can you intervalometer app and stack these images. Check the attached image. Captured on note 8
So try this, find a place where the lighting aint great, indoors, under your desk etc, where iso would be about 1600 or even higher, take a shot in Manual mode but without adjusting anything, then change to auto mode and take exactly the same shot, then go to gallery, open each photo and check the iso using the 3 dot menu and select details, you'll see for the Manual shot the iso will read 1600 iso or 2000 iso or whatever and the photo will have some noise (obviously).
Now go to the photo you took in Auto mode and select 3 dot menu and select details, you'll see the iso is 0 and the shot is much less noisy (very clean), What the hell is going on here?? you can even check the F stop and shutter speed, they'll be the same but the Manual mode has high iso (like it should for a low light scene) but the auto mode will be much cleaner and have 0 as iso, and thus much cleaner photo, any idea's???
any ideas anyone?
I've also noticed this. could this be because of HDR?

Nope not HDR, put HDR off and still get 0 iso in some shots (bright and low light), ok am stumped, have no idea what is happening...

I saw a clue in the dpreview review for the G6. The reviewer thinks that a multi-frame technique is being used in very low light. This would combine sequential exposures kind of in an analogue to how HDR works. So while it would not be related to the HDR setting, it would use a similar technique. The sample image he posts as an example of this has no iso reported, possibly because there were multiple iso settings combined or else there's not a logical way to come up with the equivalent iso (or they were just too lazy to do so).

I did the test and on manual iso was 1750 and exposure 1/15. then on auto mode iso was on 1600 and exposure at 1/15, but on AUTO there is almost not noise...

Ah ok, makes sense, many thanks jdock, appreciated. Stupid thing is that one has no idea when it will do what you mention, i took 8 photos (in auto mode) of exactly the same scene and had 3 with no iso and 2 hdr shots and 3 with normal iso readings.

It will mostly have zero ISO in low light condition. Which is amazing. That is why picture are less noisy. I don't have G6 but same thing happens on LG V20. I love the camera of V20 as I mostly take pictures indoor. I used to hate HTC 10 camera. All the pictures were extremely blurry and full of noise whether I keep HDR on, use manual mode(pro mode lowest ISO was 100) or flash.
