LG G5 will feature dual displays and camera lenses, hardware expansion - G4 General

Thanks to the prolific leaker - @evleaks
LG’s next flagship smartphone, the 2016 LG G5, will be its most premium handset to date, according to a person briefed on the company’s plans.
The all-metal handset will borrow elements from past G-series devices as well as LG’s most recent flagship, the V10, while also bringing several new features to the table, the source said (who asked not to be named because the information is not yet public).
Besides the metal enclosure, perhaps the most distinctive feature of the 5.3-inch G5 — slightly smaller than the 5.5-inch G4, but with the same 1440 x 2560 QHD resolution — is the alleged secondary “ticker” display, first seen on the larger, 5.7-inch V10. VentureBeat understands that this smaller, 160 x 1040 pixel screen will be one of the company’s headline features across its 2016 lineup, appearing on multiple devices.
Wide-angle camera
Dual displays aren’t the only unique feature tipped for the Android Marshmallow-flavored G5. The device is said to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 system-on-a-chip, along with the same 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage found in the G4. Whereas the V10 is equipped with two camera lenses in service of its front-facing selfie camera, the G5 is said to utilize a dual-lens configuration on the rear, giving the main 16-megapixel camera a 135-degree wide-angle capability, the source said.
In between the two lenses is a circle with a quartet of elements in a square configuration, according to the briefed individual, who was also shown images of the upcoming flagship. Two of those are LED flash bulbs, while another one is a laser for assisting with autofocus, first deployed on 2014’s LG G3. The fourth element is seemingly new to the G5: a so-called RGB sensor to further assist with auto focus and other scene recognition functions.
The G5 selfie cam will maintain the same eight-megapixel resolution as the G4, the source said, although no aperture was mentioned (G4 has an f/2.0).
Battery and biometrics
Underneath the trio of camera components sits a fingerprint sensor similar to the one found on this year’s Nexus 5X, also from LG. While rumors have swirled regarding an iris scanner — as retina scanner rumors have around the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge — nothing of that nature was revealed to VentureBeat.
As far as battery capacity is concerned, LG, it seems, is taking a page out of Apple’s book. Just as the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are equipped with slightly smaller batteries than the prior model year, so too is the G5 alleged to shrink its removable pack down to 2800mAh, from the G4’s 3000mAh. Bear in mind, though, that the G5’s battery will supposedly power a smaller display and a more efficient processor.
Curiously, there was no mention of a microSD slot, although we would not assume that the omission correlates to its lack of inclusion — especially since LG made the G4’s slot a significant marketing differentiator with respect to the Galaxy S6’s conspicuous lack of expandable storage.
Hardware expansion
Finally, in what’s being described as a greater push into the high-margin accessories market, LG is said to have endowed the G5 with what’s being branded as the “Magic Slot.” While its physical incarnation isn’t very clear, it is said to enable some functional expansion by way of hardware modules. The examples we were given range from an array of specified cameras — action, 360 VR, “party” — to an audio amplifier to a physical keyboard.
It brings to mind the Springboard expansion slot in Palm-acquired Handspring’s Visor line of PDAs, one of whose modules enabled it to function as one of the very first smartphones.
Neither price nor release details were shared with VentureBeat, beyond the generic first quarter 2016 launch. For reference, the LG G4 was both unveiled and released this past April.

5.2" and a smaller battery? Seriously? I was so hyped for the G5. I can live with a smaller battery but even the G4 with its 5.5" is at the bare minimum for me. I just hope this turns out as eveleak's worst leak of all time =(

I think the screen drop is perfect for me!

Extremely excited about this but concerned about the pricing. Put off by the 2800mah battery.

5.2? That will be bye bye LG for me!
5.5 is the minimum I want.

This. I hope so too or else is bye bye LG.

No more lg phone ...they technical support are suck

Sounds interesting if it's true.

Not for me.... Most likely locked down bootloader etc... They can keep it.

Sammy and LG in 2016 need to prove they still relevant, each of them should show special features that applies solo to their phones, as Hauwii Xiamoi seems to be producing amazing phones and much much lower prices, i hope G5 won't be another G4.

Two things i wanted to know
the G5 alleged to shrink its removable pack down to 2800mAh, from the G4’s 3000mAh.

There will be expandable storage.
The rest i will take it as it comes.
Otherwise looks like the G4 was a good buy and will last into the next year without any issues.

There's no reason to start a thread on the subject here in the LG G4 section.

Samsung galaxy s6 vs s6 edge vs. Htc one m9

Gizmag compares the features and specs of the Samsung Galaxy S6 (far left), Galaxy S6 edge (middle) and HTC One M9
Samsung and HTC have each been launching their flagships at around the same time for the last few years, making Galaxy vs. One dilemmas an annual occurrence for smartphone shoppers. This year, though, Samsung is making it harder for HTC to keep up, as the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edgeleap forward much farther than the HTC One M9 does. Let’s compare the three phones’ features and specs.
Size
Dimensions
No major differences in the sizes of their faces (though the One M9 is a little taller than the Galaxies), but thickness is a different ballgame. Compared to the HTC One M9, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is 29 percent thinner and the Galaxy S6 edge is 27 percent thinner.
Weight
Weight
It’s clear that HTC isn’t winning any light/thin prizes this year. The One M9 is 14 percent heavier than the Galaxy S6 and 19 percent heavier than the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Build (back)
Build (back)
Plastic begone! Samsung is going high-end with this year’s flagships, starting with the glass (Gorilla Glass 4) backs on the GS6 and GS6 edge.
Premium builds have always been integral to the HTC One lineup, and this year is no exception. Its aluminum unibody design is no less stunning than in years past, but it’s also hard to get too excited about a design that has only incrementally evolved since 2013.
Build (sides)
Build (sides)
The Samsung phones also have aluminum frames.
Colors
Color options
We’re looking at four color options for each handset.
Display (size)
Display (size)
The Galaxy S6 phones also win on screen size, giving you about 4 percent more real estate than the One M9.
Navigation buttons location
Location of navigation buttons
Samsung’s screen size advantage is a little bigger than that last category would suggest, as the One M9 uses up a bottom row for virtual navigation buttons (Samsung’s buttons are physical and capacitive, sitting below its screen).
The only asterisk is that in places like video, e-reading and photo apps, Android’s Immersive Mode will fade out the M9’s navigation keys, letting you (temporarily) use its full 5 inches.
Display (resolution)
Display (resolution)
Here’s another big advantage for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, as HTC stuck with very sharp, but not as ultra-sharp as Quad HD Full HD resolution.
Display (type)
Display (type)
As in years past, the Samsung phones have Super AMOLED displays (richer colors, greater contrasts and deeper blacks) while the One M9 uses an IPS panel.
Curved display
Curved display
The GS6 edge continues what Samsung started with 2014’s Galaxy Note Edge, sloping its screen off on either side. It’s largely a cosmetic feature, but can also flash notifications and shortcuts.
Fingerprint sensor
Fingerprint sensor
The fingerprint sensors found in Samsung’s 2014 devices were nice bonuses, but could also be a little clunky, as they required you to swipe your finger over them every time. The GS6es’ sensors, though, are more like Apple’s Touch ID, letting you simply rest your finger on the home button.
Battery
Battery
These capacities alone don’t necessarily tell you much, so we’ll have to wait for our full reviews to have much to say about battery life.
Removable battery
Removable battery
For the first time, a Samsung flagship has a sealed-tight battery. This is nothing new for the HTC One line.
Ultra/Extreme Power Saving Mode
Ultra/Extreme Power Saving Mode
Like last year, both sets of flagships have either Ultra Power Saving Mode (Samsung) or Extreme Power Saving Mode (HTC), which keep you on the grid if you’re caught with an almost-dead battery and no charger (by limiting available apps and giving you a simplified home screen with only basic functions).
Fast charging
Fast charging (when battery is low)
Both phones also have fast charging systems in place, so you can juice up a low battery faster than you might expect.
Storage
Storage
The Galaxy phones each give you three storage options, but the One M9 is only coming in a 32 GB flavor.
MicroSD
MicroSD card slot
Another first for Samsung: neither Galaxy S6 phone has a microSD card slot. The One M9 does let you pop one in to expand its 32 GB internal storage.
RAM
RAM
Nothing to worry about here, as all three phones give you an impressive 3 GB of RAM.
Processor
Processor
Samsung is kissing Qualcomm goodbye, and switching to its own Exynos processors (now even in LTE regions) for the Galaxy S6 and edge. Our performance impressions will need to wait for review units, but all three should be very fast.
Camera megapixels (rear)
Camera megapixels (rear)
HTC changed its tune this year and is now playing the megapixel game. Its original thinking, that pixel size matters more than pixel count, wasn’t completely off base … but its older Ultrapixel cameras, despite being good in low-lit conditions, weren’t good for zooming or cropping.
Camera megapixels (front)
Camera megapixels (front)
The Ultrapixel camera does live on, however, in the One M9’s front-facing shooter.
Camera aperture
Camera aperture
The Samsung phones have the wider apertures.
Heart rate sensor
Heart rate sensor
Samsung’s 2015 phones may have axed the Galaxy S5’s water resistance, but they kept its heart rate sensor (located on the phones’ backsides).
Gear VR
Gear VR compatibility
HTC has a virtual reality headset coming too, but it has nothing to do with the One M9. Samsung’s excellent Gear VR, though, is compatible with the two Galaxy S6 phones. Just be sure to buy the new version, not the original that only fits the Note 4.
Software
Software
All three run Android 5.0 Lollipop at their core, while Samsung’s use the TouchWiz UI (a much more scaled-down version this year) and the One M9 has the HTC Sense 7 UI. We’ll have more to say about the UIs once we review these three.
Release
Release
The One M9 launches in Taiwan later this month, though we still don’t know an exact US release date. The Galaxy S6 pair will be launching on April 10.
Starting price
Starting price
Previous year versions of Galaxy and One flagships rang up starting at US$650 full retail, or $200 on-contract. We don’t yet know for sure if that’s what we’re looking at here.
You can, however, expect the Galaxy S6 edge to ring up for more than the GS6. Let’s just hope the curved-screen markup isn’t as high as it was on the Note Edge (an extra $90-190 full retail or an extra $100 on-contract).
While we wait for our reviews of this year’s models, you can check out our hands-on comparison between last year’s pair of flagships, the Galaxy S5 and One M8.
I played with an HTC One M9 and realized that it's a great phone, but it's a victim of the M8's success, which in my opinion, is one of the best Android smartphones ever. But gosh, the screen on the Edge just blows the M9 away.

After Apple, Samsung and HTC, it’s now LG’s turn to unwrap its next flagship smartphone for the year 2015. The South Korean giant has scheduled events for April 28 in six cities – New York, London, Paris, Istanbul, Singapore and Seoul – where it will unveil its new flagship phone the LG G4. While the company has not yet divulged details about the phone, the Internet is already abuzz with almost everything that the upcoming phone could come with. Here is what we know so far about the G4 – the successor to the G3:
1. The media invite sent by LG for its event reveals that the G4 will carry forward the design language of its predecessors. It will also have the volume and power buttons placed underneath the camera lens on the back.
2. If rumours are to be believed, the new G4 will come with a 2.5 GHz Qulacomm Snapdragon 810 processor (the one that also powers the G Flex 2) paired with 3GB of RAM.
3. Going by the company’s product page that appeared on its Korea site early this month and was quickly pulled off afterward, the phone may have a 3,000 mAh removable battery and 16 or 32GB of internal storage (expandable up to 2 TB,. Yes, 2 terabytes, like its predecessor the G3).
4. The yet-to-be-announced LG G4 features a 5.5 quad-HD (2560×1440) LCD display. According to LG, the display will have a contrast ratio that is 50 per cent higher than conventional QHD LCD panels, while the brightness has increased by 30 per cent without any increase in power consumption. Also, instead of placing the touch panel on top of the LCD, LG has embedded the touch sensor within the LCD. This results in a slimmer design and improved touch response as the thickness of the panel is reduced by eliminating the need for an additional space for touch functions.
5. Speculations are rife that the phone will come with a 16-megapixel wide-angle camera with laser focus and a f/1.8 aperture, hinting at its performance in low-light conditions. This is in contrast to 13-megapixel camera spotted on the leaked product page (which was probably dummy placeholder specs).
6. As confirmed by LG on its Facebook page this month, the new G4 will have a vegetable-tanned leather cover. Rumours suggest that the leather cover will have six colour variants – black, brown, red, light blue, sand, and yellow. The company is also expected to launch the phone with a plastic back.
7. If the leak from the official LG microsite is to be believed, the dimensions of the phone will be 75.3 x 149.1 x 8.9 mm.
8. LG’s recently announced custom mobile software – UX 4.0 interface – is likely to debut on the G4. The custom UI is expected to be based on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
9. The LG G4 is expected to go on sale on May 31 in Korea and later in other markets.
10. LG Electronics will select 4,000 consumers in 15 countries, including India, who will test drive the all new LG G4 smartphone weeks before its official launch. Participants will be selected from applicants based on their entry responses (selection criteria may vary in each market). Once selected, participants in each country will be given an LG G4 for up to 30 days to experience its unique design and features.

I was disappointed by the lack of removal battery, lack of SD card slot and lack of radio in the S6 even though I've been holding onto my S2 hoping for the above with each galaxy update but it seems now that LG have been reading our complaints here and come up with the goods. maybe it's time to switch brands.

G5 Camera Discussion

This thread to discuss all about camera hardware and software.
From Gsmarena,
"Camera
The camera is shaping up as a major selling point for the LG G5, just like it was for the G4. Rumors checked out here and the new flagship comes with a dual shooter setup on the back. The G5 inherits all the goodies, like Laser Auto Focus, Advanced OIS and the Color Spectrum sensor from its predecessor, but now focuses its improvements in another important area - zooming. The handset is now actually capable of capturing 135-degree Ultra Wide Angle shots in addition tot he traditional 75-degree snaps.
The extra spacial awareness comes courtesy of an additional 8MP shooter on the back. It sits alongside the 16MP F/1.8 camera - identical to the one on the LG G3 back. On the software side, the phone is not only smart enough to quickly let you choose between shooters and how much you want inside the frame but can also leverage on the two snappers to produce various shot effects.
In our brief time with the LG G5 we managed to take a couple of snaps with both of its cameras.
Below you can see a sample taken with each camera. The preliminary results are promising even though the venue was rather poorly lit."
Since the LG G5 uses pretty much the same camera, on paper, as the G4, let's see how the two compares practically.

Xperia X vs Xperia Z5 display and camera (amazing)

I didn't make this video. I wanted to share it since I found that the video shows the true potential of the Xperia X series.
Display is a lot better than the normal Xperia Z5(fhd).
You will see a difference in the camera quality as well.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=g5SJq-Jag20
Credits to mobile geeks.de for making such a good comparison between Z5 and Xperia X series. :fingers-crossed:
Really looks like an exciting device. Just about the same size as the N5, but a little heavier...metal back and general Sony goodness. I love it - sold.
Would be nice if it was available sometime before 2017 though. In the US. With regular software security updates.
Oh there wont be a Z6. I still thought they continue there as well...

Source? I still believe there will be a Z6 as the 2016 sony flagship at the end of the year.
The Z5 is still very new as it's only been out for a few months right? I believe Sony stated that they will only release 1 flagship phone instead of the usual 2 per year. Also i believe the X series are being advertised as "mid-ranged" phones (Besides the Xperia X performance ofc)

I wouldn't count that as a reliable source. But if that is true then the xperia x performance is pretty much an xperia z6 in disguise.
Why would they make a Z6 if they have the XP? Lol. XP is the new flagship.
I hope the X is only around $400. I've always just wanted a mid-range phone with a high end camera. Only thing that stopped me from getting the Nexus 5X was no sd-card and my Z3 is still good.
imho sony really messed up the pricing on this ones :| 599eur for the x with a 1080p 5" screen , snapdragon 650 and 2600mah battery???? what are they thinking?
699eur for the x performance sounds a little better with the snapdragon 820 but spending 700eur to upgrade from my z2 to this is not worth it for me unless a z6 is announced with better specs my next phone probably won't be a sony :crying:

But they announced X series just as a threat to the competitions.

Sony just lost me as a customer.... x series brings nothing new, the prices are crazy and since Z series is dead that's it for me.
My next device will probably be a xiaomi mi5 pro or the lg g5. I'm not in a hurry to upgrade my z2 (still a great phone 2 years later) so i'll wait until the mi5 and g5 are released to see how the xda community reacts to them i need to be sure their bootloaders can be unlocked and custom roms are available before i consider any of them.

So a LETTER was what you chose Sony for in the first place. Wow.
The smoothness of the OS, the camera, the great Aosp support of existing devices nor even the water/dust rating with almost a decade legacy of doing this in their phones, nor even the quality audio and accessories being innovative.
Sure go a ahead and deal with the competition. Personally it would be smarter to stick with Sony getting the Z line even 6 months from now as support under warranty will still continue until all sales of that device stopped.
Where do you kids think life and products are about? Change is inevitable! Get over the letter "X" drove huge success for Sony 6yrs ago why not try to repeat that.
It's a VRRY crowded market and consolidation the screen size is smart. Making the phones interact with us as humans is genius because looking down at my phone for a total of 3hrs combined a day feels unnatural in my neck - I do body build!
I want real world performance not a spec sheet that doesn't perform!!
I just bought a Z5 full retail and I'm very happy. I'll get the Z5C as a backup especially when travelling. I'll see the upgrade to the Xperia X Performance or whatever Sony brings next year. Not going to cry over spilt milk cause they made a very conscious and rational change in their product lineup.
Grow up.

AHAH do you work at sony marketing and you got offended by my opinion? Cause your post makes no sense otherwise... When i bought my z2 almost 2 years ago it was THE top notch device. 3GB RAM, snapdragon 801, great screen, comfortable size, nice front stereo speakers, waterproof, huge battery, the best camera at the time, etc. It was very easy to justify it's flagship price and i still love the damn phone almost two years later.
Obviously i don't care about letters, naming or brands, i care about specs, functionality and price. That's were the X series fails for me because it brings nothing new to the table except slightly upgraded hardware. my biggest problem with the X series is the price range sony is placing the devices at giving it's specs, nothing else. I don't feel like an X performance is worth 700eur to upgrade from my Z2 (i would get a better cpu and camera, nothing else...i can get a z5p for less than 600eur and it still feels like a better option than the x for me).
IF you feel like it's worth it buy it, enjoy it, and stop criticizing other people opinions. I don't have a sentimental attachment to any brand so it's easy for me to choose the device that fits my needs for the best price am i not free to do that?
Honestly if i change to another brand the only thing i'll miss it's the great dev community sony has here at xda. and that doesn't include you obviously

But going by your own logic there, the Xperia X is a worthy flagship, no?
It has the fastest cpu,
It has the fastest ram
It has improved screen,
It has stereo speakers
And the improved camera.
Take it from me, I have no intention in buying X, because I have Z5p. But come IFA, the letter won't mean jack if the specs match my expectations of a flagship.
Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk
@corallus
It has the fastest cpu --> check (x performance only)
It has the fastest ram --> only 3gb, benchmarks not available yet so not sure it'll be the fastest ram available.
It has improved screen --> maybe be improved color wise but it's smaller and the same technology.
It has stereo speakers --> check (and if i go to another brand i'll definitively miss the front stereo speakers a LOT )
And the improved camera --> somewhat, will have to see after the device is released
For a sony 2016 flagship i think it's missing usb 3.0 connectivity (deal breaker for me in 2016) , a bigger battery, 4gb of ram and at the very least 64gb of FAST internal storage. Wireless charging and an ir blaster would be an welcome bonus but not a deal breaker.
The screen size drop to 5.0" makes no sense to me either especially given the 68.1% screen-to-body ratio. 5.2 or 5.5" as in z5p would be fine.
AGAIN i'll have to reinforce I NEVER said the x series is a sh*t device (quote me if a did), i'm just stating my personal opinion that it doesn't feel like a true flagship, especially for the 700eur price.
Anyway this will be the last post i'll make on this thread. I have only stated MY opinion, i've not been aggressive/stupid and i did not make any personal attack against anyone. I don't know why some people are turning this into a personal war, and i do have better stuff to do with my time so i'm out.

Spoken like a true child.
My post makes perfect sense but I see already you're beginning to backpedal from someone whom just quoted you. I'll break it down for you.
1. only a child on forums (cliché of the last 4yrs) claims someone who doesn't agree with their opinion about a brand works for said brand (first bold quote above). Hence why I said grow up!
2. When i bought my z2 almost 2 years ago it was THE top notch device
^ I stated that sales are affecting Sony's decision here to consolidate screen size and the specs along with shipping times and the brand sub-model here. SPECIFICATIONS like Skills or knowledge means nothing. It's sales to a company that continues to be a going-concern (accounting term) to make revenues that turn into profits and when sales don't go in that regard changes are inevitable for good or for worse, get used to this regardless if you don't like or do like the device ... change is here and in perfect timing. And like skills or knowledge both mean nothing without the means and the will to act ... using them (like drawing talent in a child that doesn't wish to pursue a career in that regard, drawing or visual arts is a useless skill).
3. great screen, comfortable size, nice front stereo speakers, waterproof, huge battery
Xperia Z5 Premium boasted the best screen (at least in terms of resolution and ppi).
The LG G Pro also released in April 2014 as teh Z2 had Li-Ion 3200 mAh battery http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_g_pro_2-6052.php
having a huge battery ... means nothing if the cpu, screen, storage and ram guzzles. Battery consumption efficiency and recharging efficiency is KEY because it's all about using the device.
4. Price ... this is a HUGE concern for what you get. No disagreements here from me ... BUT I did specifically state it's about getting more sales but more profits (the key) for Sony.
3 phones all sharing 5" LCD displays and resolution
All have the same storage options - consolidating and benefiting on economies of scale.
what you get vs what you loose in bold below. I've left out the battery because nobody knows the talk-time (continuous) standby time or continuous video/music playback times between the two on a production phone BUT if it increases you may reconsider.

At the end of the day your opinions are yours to make ... just stop being so childish about it and realize you can VOTE with your hard earned cheddar! Seems you didn't get this the first time around.
Why the fight?
I agree with @ptmaniac that its a decent phone; but its targeted for mid-rangers because the price is definitely a deal-breaker for specs like that of mid-2015.
Sony has made VERY GOOD phones in the past but coming up with X series with little to no improvements - puts the deal off. (4gb RAM, AMOLED Screen, at-least Better photo Quality on your phones when you use the same sensor you distribute to others) (My Note5, costing lesser, will defeat XP on all grounds. Wait till the phone comes in market and check out the comparison people do).
I myself have been a user of Z1 Compact (A true mini flagship) for 1.5 years, but NOW Sony doesn't feel like they are giving any value-for-money devices.
+1 on the support for Sony devices on xda. Kudos to every1 on that.
Its a personal opinion in the end. You want to buy, please go ahead and enjoy
We just dont feel like spending 700 for a mid-ranger specd phone.
Don't say we when you mean you. Again its a difference of opinion and view. Not a fight. We've already worked out our views in PM. No need to investigate.
The Z5compact is also a true small form flagship device: none has the same 810 CPU with 2GB ram and 32GB internal storage! None.
Since you're talking about a 3generation old phone you haven't seen value for the dollar in almost 3yrs not sure how you're even mentioning about this product. You mention awaiting for comparison but state camera should be better? Conundrum?

We're still cat-and-mouse on acceptance of the price, but we apprehend the G5 to amount about 2613.95 AED. Indeed, Mobile Fun is already accepting pre-orders at 2613 AED.
