Idiots Guide (video) to installing the FULL Android!?? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a simple vid tutorial going on how to flash the shield with FULL android? ? The main thread on the developer section has about 120 pages but it is not idiot proof. I dont want to brick my new shield
Thanks in advance!!!

If its your 1st time flashing an android device head over to youtube and spend some time there. Once you get the idea of flashing via stock recovery/twrp come back to the full android rom thread

Ive flashed a zillion android boxes. But this is not yer average android box. How difficult would it be for someone to put up a very simple guide?
This is from the main thread explaining how to do it...
"Installation:
Put the device in fastboot mode:
Connect the Shield Tv to PC via micro usb cable
Enable usb debugging in development settings of Shield TV
In the command prompt of your PC type:
adb reboot bootloader
The bootloader must be unlocked before all others operations with the command:
fastboot oem unlock
When the bootloader is unlocked, In the command prompt type:
1) fastboot flash system system.img
2) fastboot -w
3) fastboot reboot
All others parts of the firmware can be stock for now and are already installed.

Brilliant. Thanks!!!

I didnt like it either for some reason. I've followed instructions from a million xda OP's and flashed about as many ROMs but something about the way the dev chose to introduce his ROM and flashing instructions gave me a vibe l didnt like so I havnt tried it
*edit* I remember now he casually instructs you to run a command that wipes all user data (including internal storage) without the least bit of warning about potential loss of data or reason why its necessary... or making a simple statement about not supporting dirty flashing like I've seen some devs do. Anyway, other than that, it looks all good, and a lot of people seem to be enjoying it but thats funnyness if you ask me.

If it's your first time flashing on your shield then you will need to unlock the boot loader, which will wipe your device, then install a custom recovery, then flash the system image with his fast boot commands, which includes a wipe as well as his rom is very different from the stock one. You could try a dirty flash but doubt it would work. This is all from memory. I got it working fine but missed the stock rom and went back lol
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk

The instructions are pretty straightforward aside from the usual language barrier issues. If you can't follow them, then I would suggest not even trying to flash it. Hell if you want to cheat and have a 1click solution, just download the recovery from NVIDIA, and replace the system.img in their file with @zulu99's and follow NVIDIA's instruction... Thier batch file essentially runs the commands for you so you don't have to do all that tedious typing.

hey I have tried all the guides to root my nvidia shield tv but without any luck, could any one please make me and other noobs a step by step guide ?

Un-rooting a rooted N1?

So I bought a N1 yesterday, cant wait till it gets here, The phone is rooted and has 2.2 on it, Is there anyway I can un root it and just be at the latest stock android? I just prefer to be at the normal stock updates, never really been big into rooting and ROMS etc unless I have too, anyway so yea thats my question and is it difficult?
Thanks in advance!
Take a look in the Development board, there is a sticky that shows you how to restore stock 2.1. Then it will prompt you to upgrade to Froyo.

Yeah, you can't re-lock the bootloader, but you can load up the stock ROM as the post above says. But since it's all already done, you might consider looking into a ROM which fits you. There are several which are "almost stock" but have nice enhancements, like the Enom rom.
I too am an unrooted stock ROM kinda guy, I don't have the time or patience to deal with fiddly stuff on my phone anymore, as I need to pull it out, see where my next meeting is, and get there. Not pull it out and realize it's in a Standby of Death or some other random problem. There are pluses and minuses to using a non-stock ROM, weigh them.. I'm starting to myself... I want a black notification bar and a handful of other small things, but to get them it requires a lot of work (unlock, flash new rom, set up all of my apps again, figure out new stuff in ROM, etc..)
Yeah you could also use modaco ROM. Those are stock ROMs with a few extras like super user access, which is a must have. Etc.
Is rooting similar or at least easy like the HD2? I had one of those and putting Custom ROMS was so simple!
Should be fairly simple if cyanogen is on it.

If all you want to do is flash stock rom, you don't even need to know what those two are. The stickied tutorials are dead simple.
Can somoene confirm Im gonna be doing this correctly.
Step 1. Disable backup my settings under privacy settings.
Step 2. unzip the original shipping ROM and put it somewhere you can find.
Step 3. Plug in Nexus One with USB to computer (enable usb and debug modes)
Step 4. adb reboot bootloader (which will boot into the bootloader)
Step 5. Confirm fastboot connection fastboot devices
Step 6*. fastboot erase userdata
Step 7*. fastboot erase cache
*If step 6 and 7 does not work, and if you have Amon_RA's recovery installed, you can do a factory data wipe from there.
Alternately, you can also do a factory data wipe within Android. Settings => Privacy Settings => Factory Data Reset.
Thanks to Brian and setzer715.
Step 8. Go to the directory that you stored your unzipped files.
Step 9. fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
Step 10. fastboot flash boot boot.img
Step 11. fastboot flash system system.img
Step 12. Skip to step 13 if you want to keep recovery (assuming you have a modified recovery such as Amon_RA's recovery). If not fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Step 13. fastboot reboot
Step 14. After the system boots up and while setting up skip setting up with the google account and you can setup accounts later. This will prevent the phone from pulling down the previous settings (downloaded apps, wallpaper etc) from google.
Step 15. You are done. Enjoy.
Ok so I downloaded, installed and updated Android SDK, it seems to be all set, now when I follow those steps, I connect the phone first then for instance step 4 I should start "adb" then type in reboot bootloader, and for step 5 I should start up "fastboot" then type devices, etc etc? Is that correct?
thanks in advance.

Root Atrix on Mac OSX?

i have read LOTS of forums on this, but have found no diffinative, working methods. has anyone actually ever done this, and if so what method did you use? links/guides would be much appreciated! thanks
I also have searched everywhere and apart from "get a pc" or "get parallels and windows 7 for your mac" I've heard nothing concrete.
Any advice on this would be hugely appreciated!

No guys, all the methods posted are just theoretical blabber posted for the LULZ!...
.... NOT!!!
... all the methods mentioned on this forum work, unless stated otherwise...
only a handful require a Windows PC
yes, preinstall method works, CWM root package works, gingerbreak works,
1-click easy root also works
follow the link, go to post 3... and you have directions for Mac OS
sorry, i didnt mention, im not on gingerbread (thanks to tmobiles slow updating), and most of these rooting methods seem to require it. would going straight to unlocking the bootloader be easier on mac? (i realise the methods arent written for fun, but many require a lot of presumed knowledge of terminal commands, which unfortunately i lack XD )
thanks
Bootcamp or parallels with windows 7. That's how I did it.

Many thanks, I'll try one of the ones you mentioned.
I'd love to try the one click method for mac but I clocked on the link, went to third post and it's not as you suggested it might be.
If there is a simple oneclick method for mac dullards like me it would be great to tell me where to go for it. Thanks again!
i have tried using dorootv3.sh and doroot2, on terminal, but both always fail, is there any other .sh that has been shown to work?
---------- Post added at 06:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:32 PM ----------
basically, after a load of different attempts, my main problem seems to be this: to root on mac, i need 2.3.4 (i have 2.2.2); to get 2.3.4 i need to unlock the bootloader; and to unlock the bootloader it must be rooted.
it seems im stuck in this cycle, and dont really know what i should do. any help would be great.
can i flash with the at&t 2.3.4 from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944 ?
you dont need root to unlock bootloader....you unlock bootloader through an sbf flash
we seriously need a popup box on every freaking forum that will explain what ROOT actually is.
root is SYSTEM access within the OS. outside of the OS, root doesnt mean squat
you will wipe all your system when you unlock your bootloader which means:
contacts stored on phone (unless you export them to vcf on sdcard)
settings
text messages
user installed apps
it does NOT wipe internal or external sdcard (i always keep a backup of this stuff on my computer anyway when i start messing with my phone)
oh sorry, in that case i totally got the wrong end of the stick reading the noob intro howtos so to unlock the bootloader what sbf do i need to flash? that i can do now through terminal, which is very handy, but i havnt come across any howto on bootloader unlocking that just says flash an sbf
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
i typed in google.com
'unlock motorola atrix bootloader'
a link lead me directly to that.....its the exact same tut listed here on xda....
sorry, im having a serious slow day, just gone on holiday so brain is totally out of gear XD thanks so much for clearing up the root/bootloader confusion, i have now unlocked successfuly, and will be installing my first rom!

its not just you confused with root. its xda-wide.
for some reason sooooo many people have this notion that root=unlocking bl/s-off/rom-flashing
its frustrating to see people suggesting to others on some forums around here that they need to 're-root' their device when they are already on a rooted rom....its baffling that so much misinformation can be spread like wildfire.
my last confusion, for now XD, is this: the alien rom contains an image, which i can flash ok, but also a Meta Inf folder and System folder. if i follow this method
"
1. Extract all the files to the same directory and CD there in the terminal.
2. Put your phone in fastboot mode (turn it on holding volume down button then press volume up)
3. Type these commands in the terminal:
chmod +x moto-fastboot-osx64
./moto-fastboot-osx64 flash boot XXXXXX.boot.img (work out what Tegra part you need to flash and change the XXXXXX to that!)
./moto-fastboot-osx64 flash system ORFR234-system.img
./moto-fastboot-osx64 flash webtop webtop.img
./moto-fastboot-osx64 reboot
"
what should i do with the 2 folders, since as far as i know, i cant just flash folders right?
thanks

alien rom, as with any other custom rom, comes packaged for CLOCKWORK MOD RECOVERY
you dont extract rom zips
you need CWM installed on your unlocked atrix, then you boot to recovery, and flash the rom zip
oh man, just when i thought i'd started to understand everything! XD
if its not too much trouble, can you explain the method to go about installing alien on a mac, or if it exists, link a relevent thread? i can only find ones which confuse me even more

you dont install roms from your computer
you need to make sure you have CWM installed. you can do this with fastboot
fastboot this recovery on

instructions can be found

you download a rom to your phone and flash it through recovery. no computer needed at all after you have unlocked and flashed recovery on.
and is this do-able without an SD card installed? before i get halfway down the road and find im screwed XD also it seems i need to be rooted for CWM, though i still cant find a way to do it...

did you actually read the post above????
you can fastboot the recovery image.
you DO NOT need root in order to do so.....
yes i did read it... while it might be obvious to you, some of us have no idea what were doing. loads of howtos include having to install the rom from a SD card. also CWM says "The SD Card needs to be mounted to use ROM Manager" so i dont think its too much of a stretch to think i need one

you boot into recovery and install from there.......
A. download rom
B. transfer to phone's storage (if you download directly from phone, obviously skip this step)
C. boot into recovery
D. wipe data/factory reset (option in CWM recovery)
E. select option: install from sdcard
F. confirm
G. after flash is complete reboot your phone, you are now on a new rom.

Gpe back to sense m8

i bought a google edition htc m8, so i wanted to get it back to sense aswell as i prefer the usability of it + the phone was made to run on that software
this took me hour to work out and hours of research on xda and other websites, so here im trying to simplify everything into one post, so people can get back to sense
so first of course root your phone if u have a google edition, if you converted to GPE from sense you will already be rooted and you can start the process (with TWRP installed)
i did it successfully but it was a huge process as there are limited resources atm to help me do it, as to why i am posting this
1. first i downloaded HTC one m8 all in one toollink)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699065
once you download this program you will be able to put the phone into bootloader, with this program you wont have to use comand prompt on windows to change the cid in bootloader.
2. you need to change the phones cid from goog to CID-11111111, of the m8 all in one toolkit it enters it in for you and writes it straight to your phone.
3. once you do this you need to download -
Flash 1.54 Image- http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...68&postcount=3
NOW YOU NEED TO USE COMAND PROMPT- TEST PHONE WITH - FASTBOOT DEVICES- SHOULD GET A NUMBER CODE IF YOUR PHONE IS CONNECTED PROPERLY
1.FIRST ENTER fastboot oem rebootRUU
THEN- fastboot flash zip (whatever you name it).zip REDO IT TWICE 1ST WILL FAIL )- THEN SUCCESSFUL
-Boot back into Bootloader
-Boot into Recovery
-then in twrp (MUST)
-Wipe Data, Factory Reset, Advanced Wipe-Wipe System, Data, Cache
-Reboot Recovery
-Restore or Flash a Sense Rom
IF I HELPED PLEASE LEAVE A THANKS
(i have been pretty brief in my explanation, everything you need is there for the tricky parts, but if you have problems with toolkit or anything else look it up on xda) but this post will cut down the process time!
thanks. i am not resposible for any faults or problems with your phone but if you do it correctly all should be good :good:

[Q] Droid Razr M not fully booting: Help Please

Hello,
Problem:
factory reset my Droid RAZR M with the hope to resolve in-call audio problems (very low ear piece volume at full). When I rebooted the phone the Welcome screen appeared asking for a language choice. Chose english US. The Message: "Please wait, This may take a few minutes" appeared with a spinning icon. But nothing else ever happens. The phone never moves beyond this selection.
I have android-sdk (Linux setup) installed on my computer in order to use the suite of tools like fastboot and adb. The tools work, in that I can see the phone, pull data, upload to the phone and even get a command shell on the phone. However in order for adb to recognize the phone I have to put the phone in "BT Tools" mode. In "AP fastboot" mode fastboot sees the phone. As far as I remember USB debugging was turned on.
I do not have a recovery image installed.
The phone has Kitkat 4.4.2 ver 183.46.10 and is rooted with TowelRoot. I just unlocked the bootloader today via motoapocalypse package. Status of the phone is unlocked Code 3
I also removed some unused apps - like NFL and a few other space and bandwidth consuming apps that I will never use.
I'd like to get this phone to work again. Is there any hope?
Please advise and thanks for reading.
You can flash custom recovery via fastboot and then custom ROM or flash stock ROM via RSD. Guide is in first thread in general section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2869432
[GUIDE][FAQ][DIY][KK] How to Root, Boot Unlock & More
Thanks for the pointer. I gather that RSD is a Windows based app. At the present time I do not have a Windows computer. So I took a shot at the job using fastboot, adb and all as found in the android-sdk. Did the steps as described in the flashing post. Now all I ever see is the "Bootloader unlocked warning message" and the phone never progresses beyond the warning. I disassembled the phone, to disconnect the battery -- hoping for a reset miracle. No change after reassembly. Given the latest state of the phone as described above, is there any chance of reviving this phone now that it's stuck at the bootloader warning?
(I read a post about a Motorola Factory Cable -- and if I understand the factory cable puts the phone in a special mode for flashing looking into this option).
I am out to learn and am not afraid of poking around -- so at this point I have no more to lose.
Would the Windows computer make the difference? Using linux mint atm.

You can try using SBF_FLASH or mFastboot-v2 (which has a linux version) to flash the system.img .
SOLVED: [Q] Droid Razr M not fully booting: Help Please
That worked. Thanks! So the difference between the SDK fastboot and the one in the link provided (mfastboot-V2): the linux-fastboot seems to be smarter about uploading the larger image files to the flashable device (guessing). I am sure I did "flashboot flash system system.img" with the flashboot util from the SDK.
@ATTACK do you have the source for that version of fastboot or patches? Would like to have a look.
Thanks again! Got an unlocked rooted working Droid RAZR M!

Your guess is correct, mfastboot allows you to flash larger system.img's that wont otherwise flash in fastboot.
As for sources... I have no idea who created mfastboot or where it came from. It's just one of those things that get's passed around the internet.

Well I'm happy to have the utility that works. Can thank you enough -- or the creators. Found it also on goggle code after a properly crafted search string. All this for an in-call audio problem that only worsened after I took the phone apart. Still works on speaker mode though so that's good enough -- at low volume. And I learned a few things. One interesting thing: The shell prompt got rewritten to say ${USER}@scorpion_mini/ after flashing the system.img. Pretty sure it only said android prior to re-flashing . And the getprop helper app is a new thing for me.
Feel like a kid all over again exploring this little device.

Need Beginner's Guide, so Custom Rom can be installed

***UPDATE***
Thanks to reply, I have now successfully done everything I set out to do, and created follow-up guide!
You can find it HERE
Original Post below:
Hello Everyone!
I'd like to start off saying I used to have a Nexus 4, with TWRP and Lollipop-based CyanogenMod. I was able to install this all by myself, and keep both TWRP and the ROM updated. I also flashed custom radio to unlock the LTE capability on that phone. My tool of choice to help customize the phone was Nexus Root toolkit.
I was able to follow guides posted long ago on these forums, to do what I wanted with the Nexus 4 back in 2013/2014, but it seems I'm not so capable these days. I've hit such a roadblock with lack of root and constant stutters/slowdowns with everyday use on my current device, the Axon 7, that I must get away from the stock software. I heard it was not so easy with other devices, and while a few devs have posted wonderful guides for users, it's just not enough for a true beginner like me. From skimming guides posted, it seems like devs already expect you to have installed custom recovery, or unlocked bootloader. Then when I try to do these things, so I can move onto custom ROM, it seems the guides are out of date or just not step-by-step enough for me to use, and I don't want to take a risk and brick my device trying things that I'm not sure about. I'm a power user through and through, but not so up-to-date or knowledgeable enough to be able to follow the guides already on the forums. Consider me 1 out of 5 on tech level for Android software.
Here's the model/software already on my device: Stock everything, from bootloader and recovery, to ROM.
Model: A2017U, Nougat 7.0 on B15 ROM
What I still need clarification on:
with my device already running on nougat, do I need to install the nougat universal bootloader/radio I saw in earlier guides?
will LineageOS have any downgrades in regard to audio quality, on either the headphone output or speakers?
will my ROM of choice have Daydream VR support? if not what would be needed?
this is not a big deal, but do I need a special app or entire custom ROM if I'm interested in a temporary unroot to use apps like Android Pay?
Here's what I want on my device: TWRP, LineageOS with root.
If anyone, expert users and devs alike, could reply with current known-good info about the following, I and a lot of other users would be eternally grateful:
unlocking the bootloader, installing TWRP, and LineageOS, in a stupidly long but simple step-by-step process.
Quick follow-up info:
What I can do so far: download current LineageOS nightly, correct version of root .zip, and TWRP from official websites
NO, I'm not good with using ADB on Windows to get things done. I had to ask a friend to help me install it on windows, the guide he sent was much easier than the one i was using, and he still had to walk me through how to use it once installed to help me unlock bootloader/root on another device, Zenphone Zoom if anyone is interested.
PLEASE, don't link me to other guides for any part of this process, if the steps are thorough and relevant, please copy here, of course with all due credit given to original poster.
Feel free to let me know if more info about my knowledge level or device is needed to help you work on my request.
Thanks for reading, here's to several years more of everyone enjoying this wonderful device!
ok there is three real steps, but it can be aheadache, mainly because you didn't unlock before going to nougat.
Step 1. Downgrade to B29 Marshmallow - go here https://www.zteusa.com/axon-7/ and on the support tab in software updates is a full B29 software package. Download it, unzip it once, then put the update.zip file on your SD card.
- on the phone, in developers options, turn on OEM unlocking (it is needed to flash from sd card)
- boot phone to recovery, choose update from sd card, pick the update.zip from the sdcard, the phone will flash the B29 software. It is a bit slow, let it do what it needs to do.
Step 2. Unlock phone and install TWRP - go here https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/edl-emergency-dl-mode-twrp-unlock-t3553514 download the miflash program, fastboot unlock program, and twrp for B29.
- instructions are all there, just do what it says.
Step 3, Install LineageOS - https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/unofficial-lineageos-14-1-zte-axon-7-t3545679 very straight forward. Don't forget to install first the bootloader, then the rom, then gapps.
What makes this so hard is not being easily able to unlock in nougat. Most of us here unlocked way before marshmallow
No need to downgrade to b29.

I was thinking this too. Should be as simple as the steps below
1) Flash signed twrp using axonroot tool - this pry's open the door
2) Using twrp, flash fastboot (b20_fbop or something?) - opens door wider
3) Enable usb debugging and oem unlocking in developer options
4) reboot to fastboot/bootloader mode
5) fastboot oem unlock - door is now wide open
Done.

Is that a "should work" or "does work" because I'm trying to root and install LOS also on stock non rooted nougat Axon 7 and so far I've gotten nowhere and no one seems to be able to give me a list that says Yes this works
Help needed
I followed the instructions and is apparently in a boot loop. Initially it was working but now it is not. I can't even wipe the device to start from scratch. Is there another ROM available to try?

This is exactly the reason I made my post, I need concrete answers not guesses. Glad to see someone else needs the same answers

Did you downgrade to Marshmallow B29 first or skip this step?

I'm praying that someone will compile the information spread about into 3 guides that are model specific so people like us won't rack our heads trying to figure out what on earth to do.

Ok, I've edited your post to clear some of the clutter and numbered everything so I can answer everything.
1. No, bootloader updates are only for users who haven't updated to B15 (through official means)
2. Only audio issues are with the front facing speakers. The way they sound is if you turn them up to 100% and then push it even higher to like 140%. So if you keep it at about 71% they sound normal. Check this guide here to get even better quality on overall sound (headphones, speakers)
3.B15 and LOS both work with Daydream. I currently use LOS with my Daydream headset currently.
4.Magisk with this kernel here. Currently have fully functioning Android Pay with LOS.
5. This is a big problem. If you're not comfortable with ADB you should maybe rethink messing with this phone. EDL mode (which is how I flash TWRP and subsequently the B20 bootloader to unlock) is very similar to ADB and the tools needed to flash in EDL can brick your device. Learning how to use ADB isn't bad but it's good as a fallback so you're not relying on strangers to help you out in a pinch (which most will, I just like having the ability to do things mostly myself).

I'll keep on saying this as much as I need to, I get where you're coming from. There's a lot of data about the correct way of doing things. Best thing to do is read and search. When I got my phone B29 was the new hotness and there was a bunch of older data floating around that I had to sift through. But I did it, I sifted and found my own way and combined two different methods to get my phone rooted and flashed with LOS. Honestly, the trial and error, the searching, the sifting is totally worthwhile because while this device is /DIFFERENT/ compared to methods for HTC and Samsung products, it's not harder. It's better to get yourself properly antiquated to the device you plan on flashing/hacking/rooting because there is /always/ a chance for bricking. Then another thread will be created asking for help to unbrick. Take the time, read now, read everything, understand your device, then push forward.

I quoted this because this thread is like the third I've seen in the last couple days. But to offer some help, this is the guide that I've followed with two phones one running B29 stock and one running B15 Stock. It remains the same because of the use of EDL. It's also good in case you want to go back to complete stock (which at the time was speculated would brick your device) but I read between the lines and discovered that it's just not a big deal. Once you get TWRP installed, make sure your Data partition is EXT4, flash LOS, flash GApps and you're good to go.
The hardest part of the process, is getting your drivers to be recognized properly for the EDL flashing tool to work. Anti-Virus softwares tend to throw false positives with tools like the EDL Flashing tool. I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 JUST to have a flashing station ready JIC. Once I did that, smooth sailing.

I've already used EDL mode from that page to put a fresh copy of stock nougat to, among other things, reduce the potential issues upgrading causes. So all I should have to do is flash B15-NEW_TWRP (Nougat) from that page and then fastboot unlock?
from there reset data/cache, flash custom ROM.
flash gapps
reboot, install apps.
?????

In case you still need all this, I made a new guide after successfully doing everything:

Thank you for the guide, but I managed to get everything done without having to downagrade from Nougat. I was having issues with my Windows variant recognizing my phone after drivers were installed so I used Linux Mint 18.1 and everything went smooth as a whistle. I think the mods should pin your thread post.
I followed the rootjunkie YouTube videos, worked perfectly and the files were all available.
