Data usage high? Check this out - Fire TV General

I'm on 51.1.6.3_516012020, rooted by rbox. I run tomato on my router, like to check to see if anything is hogging bandwidth, notice my fire tv has been consistently downloading at 200 KB/s and was ticked off. That's a lot of data, and I'm on a slower "Broadband" connection since I live out in the country. Disabled the screensaver, was not the issue as data usage was still high. Started dumping out app data for every app until i found the culprit, which was Photos. Went and renamed the photos apk to add .bak, restarted, no data usage. Never used the app anyhow, no idea why it was doing anything.
TL;DR - the photos app (gallery) was using a lot of data for some unknown reason.
Hope this helps anyone who has seen this issue.

I think it is because everytime the Fire TV goes into screensaver mode it downloads the photos for the screensaver. The photos can be over 600 mb. Thats why most people upload their own photos to Amazon Photo folder and use them for screensaver. You can then clear data in the Photos app to stop Fire TV from downloading the large cache of photos. My screensaver photos are only 46 mb

That was what I read as well, so I turned off the screensaver entirely and it was using data still. Cleared the data out of photos and it redownloaded it. It is a bug in the gallery apk, from what I can tell. I looked at the last week of usage on my router for the IP and it was consistently at 200 KB/s, which is a pretty good throughput at 24/7 (a bit over 17 GB of data!).

Where is the apk located? Sadly there is no "find" or "locate" binary on the firetv. Is it called signed_gallery-bueller-release_601920010.apk ?

Thanks for posting your findings, this is very interesting. I never use the photo's app either, I will do the same. I have not checked my data useage to see if this is happening to me, but I have 4 FTV hooked up 24/7 at my house, that could be a problem real fast.

I seem to be having this issue too.
Where is the APK? I looked and couldn't find it. I tried browsing from an adb shell and with root explorer and couldn't find it either way.
Thanks for your help!

I froze the app with titanium backup.

I didn't find this in /system/app for the FireTV2. Is it just for the 1st gen box?
Update: I do see a similar apk on the AFTV2 but not sure if anything needs to be done for this version.. maybe the download issue has already been fixed?
Code:

-rw-r--r-- root root 6708212 2015-12-02 21:46 com.amazon.bueller.photos.apk

Yes, it was on the fire tv 1. Not sure if it exists in firetv 2 or in the newer ROM.

This still seems to be an issue with even the newer AFTV units. I just got word from Comcast that I had reached 90% of my 1TB data cap. My usage went from averaging 150GB a month to 500GB in October and 898GB in November. I had bought my AFTV in the middle of October. I have also bought a Amazon Echo and a Google Home. I unplugged all 3 devices and finally narrowed it down that it was the AFTV causing the issue. I don't stream any shows on the AFTV and only use it for Kodi with local content. Come January 1 I'll do some more investigations but for now the AFTV is unplugged.

If your FTV1 is Rooted or has ever been Rooted using KinRoot. That might be a factor too. A TWRP factory reset has to be done in those cases to get rid of anything left behind by KingRoot.

How To Prevent Kindle Fire 6.2.1 Update

Posted this on Gizmodo last night - not sure if people would still find it useful.
http://gizmodo.com/5870339/how-to-keep-your-kindle-fire-rooted-and-update+free
Bascially: just install DroidWall and whitelist the applications you want to give access to. Even though I would rather do this for now, TWRP + 6.2.1 w/built in su does seem tempting though.

And actually, zirooo just copied and pasted my Gizmodo article, although he did include a helpful image.
You would have to block all amazon services including video, store, etc.
It might be easier to turn off the wifi.

Actually, you can selectively choose Video and Appstore. Enabling those did not cause the update to download.
The only way to know for sure would be to use the device for a couple days as many suggested blocks didn't show them selves to be ineffectual until a number of days went by.
Well here is why I think this one works for real:
Before installing DroidWall, the instant my Kindle would connect to Wi-fi, my bandwidth would spike to 600kbps (as per my Tomato router). There were no other applications that would be running, so I attributed that to the update. After installing DroidWall, the massive spike ceased.

[Q] Strange App

I've just tried an app from a website out of stupidity and it totally took over my phone. It just kept loading a webpage over and over until I killed the app. I'm just concerned about my Nexus and my data.
Has anyone heard of http://leviathansecurity.com and the nopermissions.apk?
Stock and unrooted.
I haven't heard of that website but I think you should uninstall that app rather than just closing it.
I downloaded a bad app as well last week but it deleted all my SD content, photos and music etc
Now I only install Apks from here on XDA and play store of course
here's link about that apk,
leviathansecurity.com/blog/archives/17-Zero-Permission-Android-Applications.html
3 functions
reads sd data,
reads what apps install and access their data
device information
then sends info via url by opening webpage to send data
its just to show how easy it is to give access to your information for apps that abuse permissions or even given none like this apk, this one is intentional to show the loop holes
I didn't realise how easy it was, rooted is evem worse

DELETE that app, make sure the apk is gone too.
When you approved side loading of apks, your good phone warned you to be careful with what you ok to install, no?
Install Lookout as well and let it do a full scan, you never know..
Leviathan security, and the no permissions app, is a test application to show how zero permission apps can still read and steal data from your phone without permissions. AFAIK it isn't malicious, just a test app to show how easy it is for 0 permission apps to steal your data. Just uninstall the APK. More info here: http://leviathansecurity.com/blog/archives/17-Zero-Permission-Android-Applications.html
Thanks Peeps, It did seem legit on the site before I installed it. It's just the fact it took over my browser for a bit. The app was removed but, would there be a need to hard reset or anything like that? I'm normally rooted and have a data firewall to block anything outgoing on certain apps but, with the N4 being so good as it is I've put it off until I can no longer resist the urge.

[How To] Change screensaver on Fire TV (non-root): Apple, Chromecast, etc.

Updates below
After a while of screwing around trying to get the Apple TV screensaver on the Fire TV, I've finally managed to figure it out, and thought I should post a guide. This one's for the Apple TV Screensaver, but any daydream screensaver should work too.
1. Sideload your screensaver APK to the Fire TV, in this case it's Aerial Dream. Install it on another device & extract the APK, or use google search 'your screensaver apk' for a mirror. You'll likely have to put it on your other device to follow the next steps if using something else, however.
2. Connect to your Fire TV via ADB and open a shell:
Code:
$ adb shell
[email protected]:/ $
3. Use the following command to set the new screensaver:
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ settings put secure screensaver_components com.codingbuffalo.aerialdream/com.codingbuffalo.aerialdream.AerialDream
[email protected]:/ $
4. (optional) Check to see if you've set it up:
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ settings get secure screensaver_components
settings get secure screensaver_components
com.codingbuffalo.aerialdream/com.codingbuffalo.aerialdream.AerialDream
[email protected]:/ $
All done. Now you can enjoy a different screensaver on your Fire TV!
5. (optional) To go back to Amazon's original screensaver (bet you won't after you see the Apple TV one, use the following command:
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ settings put secure screensaver_components com.amazon.bueller.photos/.daydream.ScreenSaverService
[email protected]:/ $
Notes:
For other screensavers, set them up on your other device by going to Settings - Display - Daydream - Select your screensaver, then use the command from step 4 to get the proper activity name to use, usually in the format com.packagename/something.ActivityName
The Apple Screensaver saves large videos, so you should have extra disk space and lots of data transfer available.
The first time Aerial Dream starts, it has to download some of the screensaver media, which usually takes a few minutes on a decent network. Let it sit on the loading screen and be patient.
Hey, it doesn't look like much, but it took me quite a while to figure this out. Hope it helps someone out there who wants to customize their Fire TV a little more.
If anyone knows of any other cool daydream screensavers, please post 'em here.
Update August 1st
I've finally got the Chromecast screensaver (home page?) working on an FTV1. I had to update Website Daydream with the open pull requests; the author is MIA unfortunately. I have attached my debug build of an un-signed APK to this post you can use.
Install it the same way as the Apple screensaver above. The daydream package name / service name is:
uk.co.liamnewmarch.daydream/uk.co.liamnewmarch.daydream.WebsiteDaydreamService
You'll also need Activity Launcher to set it up.
Go into Activity Launcher - All activities - Website Daydream - Settings. Set address to https://clients3.google.com/cast/chromecast/home, Display - Full Screen, Overview mode, and Wide view port all checked, leave the rest as defaults.
Although I've suggested using the Chromecast home screen, you can of course use any web site you wish. As always, if you find something cool, post it below.

Ariel Dream 2.7GB moved to ext. SDCARD
I HAD 3.24GB free then followed this Guide to get the very cool Ariel Dreams running as my screensaver instead of the stock Amazon(which I like a lot too - just seen it all).
Next thing I know Kodi is acting as it does for me when I get low on storage.
Sure enough I had 1.14GB free on the tiny 5GB FTV internal storage.
I thought I had to abandon Ariel Dream - nice to look at but to big.
The I found a old AFTVNews article on "How to move and run Amazon Fire TV apps from an External USB Storage Drive"
Did not need the Stickmount mentioned as I already had an SDCard (external) installed. (old article)
Just followed the FolderMount portion to move it to sdcard1 (even the com.codingbuffalo.aerialdream directory was already over there just empty) by pairing it.
Back to 3.24GB free and Ariel Dream running with it's HUGE videos.
Just thought I would mention how I solved this space delima this guide(very helpful) presented.
Not installing for me
Tried installing on both gen 1 and gen 2. No go. Running 5.05 with device updates turned off. App installs but 1) does not appear in app list under “Manage installed apps” and 2) Icon is listed on home screen but fails to open. Message says app is not downloaded from Amazon. Perplexed.

This isn't a normal app, it's a daydream screensaver. There is no UI, there is (currently) no options, and the only way to get it to do anything is by following the guide in the OP.

Same thing for me right after install - But then I rebooted.
App is now GONE from the home screen.
Just worked after inactivity (whatever you have it set to).
Hi, i installed this on my fire TV Gen 2, non-rooted. and the screensaver media seems to have taken a lot of space on the internal drive. is there anyway to reclaim the space the screensaver has taken up? is there a way for me to move the default cache or app over to the SDcard?

if i go back to stock screensaver i still dont free up the space aerial dream took up. it seems the only thing to do from here to reclaim would be to factory reset?

I believe the latest FireOS has a root exploit you can use to install TWRP/pre-rooted 5.0.5.1 with King Root. Check your device's thread here on XDA; I'm not familiar with FTV2 at all.
And to erase the screensaver's cache, you can either uninstall Aerial Dream, or delete /sdcard/Android/data/com.codingbuffalo.aerialdream

Just wanted to thank you again for this. The Apple one worked and I used it for months. Switched back to the Amazon Collection. But just now am using the Chromecast. Works great. Can I install the Chromecast App on my FTV to change the speed the images are displayed ? Too slow for my tastes(Apple was to slow too BTW).
However, with 3 different screensavers I am pretty happy. I set the time to forever so they always are running.

Rooted LG V20 won't reveal hidden files

Good evening, XDA. Recently, I spent the night rooting the LG V20 model by T-Mobile H91810d. Successfully followed James Lane 19 minute tutorial on Youtube for it and flashed noverity by the end.
Regardless, it still won't allow my PC to completely view data files, the V20's temperature rose (used to feel a lot cooler), and the speed became significantly slower. Immediately enabled developer mode and disabled automatic updates to keep my current software version.
I just want to see files within offline applications like Planescape Torment Enhanced Edition for modding purposes. Does anybody know how to successfully view app data specifically through PC at this point? The app data is clearly visible through Google Playstore's mobile file explorers.

I forgot to select "show hidden files" on my PC before. Could it be that?
I wish. All files extensions are already set to show for Fallout and Skyrim modifications. Thanks for the response
Showing extensions and viewing hidden files are different options. You probably know that... just putting it out there.
I can't recall the exact situation, but I have had instances where files on my phone were unavailable, or non copyable from the phone. You can try a adb pull of the folder, or using an internal file manager compress, then copy the compressed file. Also make sure you can see hidden files on the computer lol.
I got the view hidden files feature switched on and double checked this now to make sure. The worst part is I can't paste over the app's invisible file structure with a replicated one. It creates a new folder instead like if there's some invisible force shield around it or something lol

Tablet constantly downloading something

Hi, I've just found my rooted HD10 is constantly downloading at a rate up to 20Mbit/s. It shifted 20GB overnight. . Unfortunately I have no idea what's doing it. Are there any apps that work with Fire OS which will display the network usage of apps? Ones I've found so far require an android permissions setting that the Fire doesn't have... Thanks

Do you have the "On-Deck" feature in the stock Amazon Video/Music apps disabled? I know that will automatically download large files.
I think Simple System Monitor might show network use per app. It's rather helpful in general.
I also noticed the other day on the newest firmware that there is a new, annoying background process/app that is running constantly. I disabled it and haven't had any functionality issues. I don't know if that's the culprit, but maybe?
Hope this helps or at least is a starting point!
-Richard
Thanks Richard. Although the app doesn't show the individual network usage, I think because it needs to be granted 'Usage Data Access' which doesn't appear to be an option on the HD10, it did show that the Amazon 'Download Manager' was chewing the most CPU time. Forced stopped that and the downloads ceased.
Anyone any idea what Download Manager usually downloads? And is it safe to disable it if it goes rogue again?
*edit: disabled it, what's the worst that can happen
Cheers
Also, I just stumbled upon this snazzy app, which seems like it would also be a helpful tool with regard to the kind of app bandwidth/data usage information you're trying to investigate. Hope it helps!

You made me curious ?️ I went into my own "Download Manager" apk and peeked inside its inner workings... didn't find anything very exciting. Here are some photos of the code/components and permissions used for the app. On my HD 10, it has hardly been touched and hasn't used much data at all, and it's not one of the system apps I disabled, so I'm not really sure... ? But I think you'll be alright with it disabled...
The only other thing I might suggest, in your Settings, under Security & Privacy, maybe make sure you don't have "Collect App Usage Data" selected? I think Download Manager might have something to do with your download history and creepy Amazon sales metrics.
Well disabling had a bit of an unwanted side effect - Google Play won't open!
I'll keep looking to see what's requesting the Download Manager to download stuff, starting with disabling DeviceSoftwareOTA.
