i was able to unlock the bootloader and flash custom recovery in fastboot mode. Suddenly, the screen flickers for few times and tab shuts off. Now its not turning on, power, vol+ and vol - combination not working, it only shows battery icon, when I plug in power cable and then it goes off. I am dreading that the tab might be bricked. How to fix this?

I am having the very same issue as paindoo and it was the battery. Thanks peterk-1. It took a while until I got the best moment to plug-off to power-on (strange work-around) but now it's charging. Battery too low to boot long enough to say if it powered-off during flashing and something is lost but it's not bricked.
Wish you good luck paindoo that it's only the battery for you as well

Ok everyone I am having a major problem with my N7. This morning I noticed it was out of power so plugged i tin like normal, then I went to turn it on got the Google logo then it went to the Nexus logo. And it kept cycling through the nexus logo for hours and will not turn off. Whenever I try to turn it off it just restarts from the beginning. Now I didn't buy my tablet from the play store so I would have to go through Asus for a warranty replacement. Has this happened to anyone else in the past?
Some info. Stock, unrooted, locked bootloader, stock 4.2
Well this never happened to me before. Did you try removing the battery?
Well, to start, unplug your N7 from the power source and hold the power button down for about 15 seconds, this should force it off. From there, turn it back on and let us know what happens.

I don't see that you have tried holding down the power and the volume down. This should get you a hard reset.
Here is a short topic where a power and vol down worked for someone where a straight power down did not:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/30101-reboot-tip/
it's the last post (#6)
Rather than trying to run the battery down, which is not all the way down when it shuts off and would take a long time to discharge just sitting there, you could pull the battery if you feel comfortable opening the case. It's not glued or anything and the battery has a ribbon connector.
So its in a boot loop? Reflash the image with Mskips toolkit option 9 after booting into fast boot mode. If that isn't the problem then do a warranty return. Not sure why you're stuck in a loop.

Hello everyone,
First of all my problem. My nexus 7 is dead . the battery got too low as the charger was busted and it switched off and now its not turning on. I got the OEM nexus USB cable, OEM charger and have followed almost all the troubleshooting tips on this forum and elsewhere.
Now I dont know if the problem lies in the charging point or the battery.
My question to anyone who has the idea is that, IF i charge the battery in another Nexus 7, or with an external charger, will it work?
I want to fix this( i am in Nepal) and there is no way I can get a warranty in this. So I am in DIY mode
If the battery is dead and I cant boot into the bootloader anymore, is the above idea a possibility?
Thank you

Does it do anything when you first plug it in to charge?
As in does it start to show the charging screen and power off immediately? Does it start to boot then turn off?
Was having an issue with my wife's n7 where she let it discharge all the way to dead and would not take a charge or turn back on.
There is a trick you may be able to save it without doing much at all.
Plug it in to a wall charger and immediately, or as quickly as you can, hold power and volume down to try and get into recovery mode or bootloader. Needs to be almost instant.
If you can get into recovery or bootloader select power down (in bootloader use volume keys to navigate, power button to select).
Unplug the power cord and plug it right back in. You should hopefully see the charging battery screen.
Hope this helps.

I have already tried the above method. The good news is I went to a repair shop and asked them to charge the battery externally. My nexus did start. But it seems like I damaged the USB port somehow, so it is either a POGO pin charger or have to get the port frm smwhere..hmmm

By the coincidence, is your batt serial no beginning with BD? If so, look on the battery. Is it swollen a bit? If so - call samsung, they will replace battery free of charge.
If not, try to connect phone to charger, insert battery, go to recovery and make full wipe.

it might be a power button issue
ok, this may be tricky.
while keeping volume down and home - slice battery in. If phone would boot in download mode (even just for a while) - then it will be power button issue.
it boots up on download mode for seconds and then powered off again....
Im digging up this post because this is the same problem i had.
I ended up removing the power button all together, carefully popped it off the motherboard. The phone no longer boots for a couple secs and powers off again so i think the power button was the issue. Now i have the problem of powering on the phone. I tried booting into download mode (to have the reboot option) by holding volume down+home while plugging it in but nothing happens, all i get is the battery charging icon. Ive been into download mode before i removed the button, but like the OP, it would only be a second or 2 before rebooting. Am i doing the correct procedure for download mode? Perhaps my timing is off? Any suggestions?
At least i do get the battery charge and it stays until i unplug the phone, no more boot loop!

Ok so i managed to get the phone to power up without going into download mode using this method i found on youtube. No boot loop and fully powered up now, the only thing is that im stuck on the lock screen. My friend cant remember his pin so i cant get in, the only option left now is to boot into recovery and do a factory reset yes? Well, how can i do that without a power button? Any suggestions?
Hi,
1. I had CyenogenMod 10 installed on my nexus 10.1
2. I reverted to a backup of android 4.2.2.
3. I updated to 4.3.#
4. Again updated to 4.4.#
5. During reboot, i saw the kitkat boot animation and it wouldn't boot up.
6. I fell asleep and left the boot animation going.
7. In the morning, the boot animation was twitching and acting funny....i shut off the device by holding down the power button.
8. The device never started again. It has been plugged in to a 2.0A factory charger since step 1. When i hit the power button, i see the battery symbol indicating it is fully charged...but no matter how long i hold the power button, It does not boot. I have tried different combinations of power button + volume up / power button + volume down / power button + both volume buttons...but I cannot get anything except the little battery charging indicator to appear on screen. It doesn't show up in ODIN when plugged in and hitting buttons to power it on.
I'm about ready to toss the device in the trash unless anyone can give me some ideas.
Thanks

What is exactly the charging icon you are seeing? Is it the one with a thunder? If yes, I had the same issue once, after a while (lol few hours) it resolved itself. Also the tablet was plugged in the wall.

Yes, the one with the lighting bolt. Good to hear. I'll let it sit on the charger a while and give it another shot.
Thanks

This icon means you are out of battery in fact, so it is not at all charged. I wonder why, if you put the tablet next to you, at some point, the display will wake up itself with the charging animation of the battery.
After that, lets say when you are 20% or more, you will have, most likely, to format. If you got a custom recovery shouldn't be hard, otherwise you can install stock rom or a custom recovery through fastboot

Ahhh, ok i misread the icon. It is charging now, but it won't boot up. The KitKat boot animation just repeats forever...but at least i can get into my bootloader now.
Thanks!!
I have a at&t S4 that all of a sudden today stopped working. When I restart the phone by taking the battery out and putting back in, it gets stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo and then a black screen. I tried going to recovery mode(volume up + home + power button), and it shows recovery booting in blue for a sec then goes black. I tried for download mode the warning comes up but after pressing volume up it goes black. I really don't know what to do at this point.
Tried using kies or smart switch to perform a firmware recovery?
Yes, the computer doesn't recognize that the phone is connected. It's as if when the phone goes to the black screen its actually powered off. The only time I get anything from the phone is when I pull the battery and reinsert it.

When the phone battery are too low, the phone could behave like that too.
Do you know that battery is fully charged or has more than 60%?
If not charge the phone first.
Plug the charger. If you did not see any sign showing that you phone is charging, press and hold the power button for 10 sec and release it. You should see the phone charging image.
Let me know whether your phone has enough battery power left but showing the above mentioned problems.

Yes, the battery is fully charged. I have another S4 Active that I've swapped the batteries with, along with a spare official Samsung battery and charger. It doesn't matter which battery I use, the phone acts the same with any of the 3.

If you have enough battery power left but the phone was behaved like that, you might need to flash the firmware.
Are you in lollipop or kitkat? For the time being, the only firmware available for kit-kat and lollipop is NB1 firmware cooked by muniz_ri . You can get it from here.
You mentioned that you can go to download mode but the phone shut off when you press volume up to go to the download mode after the warning.
Try the 10 sec method. Go to the download mode (power+home+volume-down) but keep holding the power button for 10 sec even though you see the warning message appear. Then you press volume up to go the download mode. Try this way and let me know.

It was on Kitkat. I can press the volume up and get it to show the download android screen but it immediately shuts off. Holding the power button for 10 secs. and then the volume up didn't do anything. The phone shuts off after 1-2 secs. of doing anything.

That is strange. The same thing happened to me. But I avoided the phone shut down by 10 sec methods.
Just hold the power+home+volume down for 10 sec, even though the warning sign show up, and then let it go all of them. Plug the phone to the computer and then press the volume-down to go into download mode. It works for me. Not on the first try though.
Try doing that with batter charger plug in too.

Thanks for your help. I figured out whats wrong, its got a faulty power button. I took the phone apart, put it back together, and was able to get it to boot completely. The slightest touch of the power button causes it to reboot though, so I'm going to need to replace it.

Glad you found the problem. I was trouble shooting for the software error.
Yes, power bottom could give you a problem too. I use screen off app so I do not have to use power button to turn off the screen.
