So long story short phone had been run over on gravel parking lot. Plugged it in saw red notification dot thought good will buy new digitizer front screen and housing because motherboard looked OK after inspecting
Get every thing put in. Plug in red light flash as charging screen turns on. Yay phone is already super hot for just being plugged in 5 min. Any way boot phone...... Its stuck at Google think OK soft brick reflash..... Did this 10 times now no luck still at Google tried booting into recovery stuck at Google logo. Only thing I can do is get into bootloader.
Did something actually come loose on board but not the section of the bootloader.
You let me know interested in hearing
Any way bought new mother board and battery just in case
Sounds like the board might of been damaged. Sounds like the memory could be damaged.
Might have to buy another device

i purchased one of those backup batteries on ebay from china, after about 2 weeks it came in.
upon opening it i compared it to my battery, the new one said htc inovation on it but looked like a knock off counterfit to me. so before ever putting it in my phone i put it in the included charger and started charging it. once it was complete i tried changing batteries and as soon as i put it in my nexus one the little led at the top right started flashing from green to orange, the screen wouldnt even flicker. as long as this battery was in, even if i plugged it in it would do this. i left it plugged in over night.
i really dont wanna wait for a new one so im wondering if there is a way i could fix it. im going out on a limb and suspecting that the charger that came with it is the problem, as it seems to be some weird universal charger. so for the past few days ive had a led attached to the battery and it still i not dead. once its completely dead im going to try to charge it with my nexus.
any other ideas/insight you guys can give?
I know you can get a bit of info from /sys/kernel/debug/battery_log
I'm not 100% sure on how exactly to interpret that though.
I've also had what i assume is a dud battery from ebay. Exactly the same issue - flashing orange/green LED. I'm waiting for them to ship a replacement. I guess I'm not really that surprised. It's not like it's a genuine battery. I was kind of expecting problems with it i guess.
yeah it reminds me of those fake louie vutton purses you see on the streets in big cities, says htc on it but i doubt htc had anything to do with making it.
i bought one just like it for my g1 a year ago and it worked fine, still works to this day with no noticable difference from the legit one that i got it with.
i got a refund but i hate to let it go to waste i wanna try to fix it. when i hook it up to the led it shines so its obviously giving power, but every few seconds or so the led flashes, im not sure if this is the battery or the fact that i have the led taped to the diodes lol.
did you get one of those universal battery chargers with yours? i got one that you have to slide the connectors to fit the battery and i have a feeling its about as high quality as the battery. im wondering if that had anything to do with it?

ive noticed that the phone flashes from orange to green if you try to turn it on while its plugged in without a battery in. perhaps it means insufficient power?
just a heads up, i put the new battery i got into the charger that was included in my first backup batty the charger is this one from this same seller

not only did it destroy the new battery but it melted part of it after litterally 10 minutes of charging.
BEWARE of that charger and probably that seller as well
it probably would have burned my house down if i had not smelled it before walking out the door

The way the story goes:
My girlfriend drops her N4.
The screen breaks and I replace it.
About two weeks pass and she gets the red light of death.
I do some homework, read few threads, watch few videos and try everything I found before I take device apart again.
Try pushing all the buttons I read about, while plugging the charger, while unplugging and standing on one foot and singing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and other voodoo. No success.
Taking the back cover off and unplugging the battery. Connecting it back, closing the N4, try to power it up but no signs of life.
Suddenly I realize the device is very hot. VERY hot. I start taking it apart again, unplug the battery and let it cool. After that I plug the battery back again leave the back cover of, to check if the powering up process made it so hot. Well, no. After about 15 seconds I begin to feel the heat.
I decide to blame the battery from my own N4. I take my own N4 apart, try to get the battery out, but while doing it I damage the battery and it starts smoking. So now my device is officially dead too. My N4 battery goes to the trash and I think "whatever... I'll try her battery on mine.". I plug it in and the N4 stays cold for few minutes, I close the back door and it powers up flawlessly and now runs for few hours.
Since I she bought the N4 in the US she had no warranty here where we live, so that's the reason I changed the screen myself which voids any chances for RMA even if could figure a way to get it back the the US.
Meanwhile I ordered a new battery for myself.
Do you guys think it the logic board that's dead (If so, should I replace it?)? Maybe other part that just does short circuit? Maybe the battery got f***ed during the screen replacement and it just took time to kill the entire phone with overcharge or something? Any other ideas I didn't lay my mind on?

so judging from your experiences it is not a dead battery that causes the red light of death problem?
i am wondering because i too have red light of death on my 2nd batch nexus 4 (ordered 11/27/12, delivered december 13 2012) and i too took it apart and removed battery for charging, this did nothing but i have a new nexus 4 coming from rma and i would like to swap the batteries and see if that will help because i would like to wipe the phone im sending back but idk if thats possible

I ended up getting a used motherboard from ebay for about 100$ and replacing it. Still works like a charm.
But I can't promise you anything, since it may be any other part that causes a short circuit and burns it. I just took my chance.
For me unfortunately the RMA wasn't an option.
So, my nexus has been good to me since I've owned it (2 years and counting), however recently (about two weeks ago) my nexus randomly died in the morning, while I was using it. At first I thought it was a simple crash as I was running Hells Doctor with TARDIS Mod, yet when I plugged my phone back in, I was greeted by a solid red light!
Fast forward a week I received a battery to serve as a replacement, as I thought it was the red light of death, yet after I finished installing the battery I hurried to go charge my phone back up, only to be greeted by the same solid red light.
Move up about three days, I asked my friend for his Qi Charger, as I then thought the charging port was damaged, left it overnight charging on the Qi Charger only to be greeted by once again the same solid red light in the morning.
Now I'm at present time of posting this, I'm starting to worry that my phone has had a hard brick, so I planned on going into download mode and doing a hard reset, but both my computers were not able to recognize my phone in download mode, nor did I ever get the download screen on the nexus itself.
I'm beginning to lose hope! I've tried all button combinations, tried 'jump starting' my battery, now I'm resorting to this.
Any other ideas? Or is it time to part ways with my beloved nexus?

Yesterday I picked up a used Nexus 7 with a bootloop issue.. spent $10 so I figured worst case I bought an expensive charger for my phone. Either way, it looks like the bootloader is locked and I can't unlock it. Everything I've read seems to point to a bad emmc chip. Would replacing the motherboard solve this issue (assuming the new motherboard doesn't have the same defect). Also could I replace this one (an 8gb) with a 16 or 32 gb board?
I changed my motherboard from 16 to 32gb. All went without a hitch. I got this one...

Did you just want to upgrade or was there an issue with the original 16GB? If it's good (and you still have it) would you want to sell it?
I assume my motherboard is zapped. I can charge my Grouper while it's unplugged but no device will recognize it. I made the mistake of upgrading my partition with this issue, now I have a fancy paperweight. Thoughts?
I just ordered an 8GB replacement motherboard from eBay, cost $16.99. I'm figuring I'll be into this thing for a bit under $30 if all works out so worth the gamble I guess. I'll update once it comes in.
My new 32 gb motherboard arrived, and I installed it right away- I felt like it was Christmas morning. Fast forward to closing the case, and I get no power. Not even a weak attempt. I went through everything, it's all properly attached. Still nothing. It's currently charging with no LED light on. I am not optimistic. Anyone have any suggestions?

I replaced my boards also.... Bought a used unit that came from a Nexus that someone had broken the screen on.... So, I received the frame with camera/speaker and boards attached.... only thing missing was the usb/headphone piece which I just took from my old frame....
Put everything together.... sealed it up..... plugged it in..... Nothing...... mild heart attack..... But then, I let it charge for 10 minutes... returned to the unit and pressed and held the power button.... and it fired up....
So, as I don't have a suggestion on if there is something internally wrong.... But sure, that the battery is plugged in securely and give that power button another shot after charging for a little while...
Motherboard came in yesterday, couldn't have been easier to install just have to watch the plastic clips on the ribbon cable connectors, I broke one on the old motherboard, if they are anything like the PS3 if they break you're SOL. The new MB was on 4.2 so I went through the upgrade procedure to 5.0.2 and wow it runs lollipop nicely. Also I ended up getting a 16gb MB so that worked out well.
Try and use a regular tablet charger, which I think is 1.3 or 2.3 amps and not one of the generic chargers which are lower - you will notice a huge difference in charging time. I'm using the tablet charger on my S4 and it goes from 10% to 100% in around an hour.
I've been having a few issues with my Nexus 4 on 5.1.1.
Twice in the past month I've had random Force closures of all aps. Facebook was the worst. But then it goes on to all other apps including the launcher.
First time that happened I did a factory reset and things went well. Yesterday it happened again while it was on another charger and I can get my phone to boot.
The screen backlight looks like is on when it's plugged into the charger and will go out if I hold the power button down for 5 to 10 seconds.
If I hold the power button down for 10 seconds when the charger is connected the LED flashes red till I take my finger of the Power button.
I've let it charge overnight (12 hours) and I've tried holding both volume buttons with the power button.
As well as Volume up and Volume down separately with the power button.
Is the phone dead? anyone got any ideas on how to bring it back to life
I've got a screwdriver set on order as I don't have fine enough star screwdriver to remove the internal battery connection. Which is my next step..
I think you are right to try replacing your old battery. Be careful while scraping it out where it is glued in not to tear it up too bad because it can 'splode. Might want to use a plastic card for that. I used a metal shim, an iOpener, and am much better now...

Think it's time for an upgrade anyway.
Got my eye on the "OnePlus-X" as my next phone.
Removed the battery and stuck my multimeter into it.
It's got V output of 3.61 volts but amps drop off a cliff to zero as soon as I touch the contacts.
New battery arriving tomorrow.
i have the same problem with my nexus 4 dude. it boots when it is connected to the charger. basically it works like a desktop. I went into recovery mode and did a fectory data reset and wiped all the cache. Pliz help me proceeed. I kind have a hunch that its a software thing. did yours start working ater change of battery? yes dude. i can go to recovery without it even being plugged in. I m pretty frustrated. I plan on giving it to the repair centre but he will charge me a bit high. Doesnt matter will let you guys know if I do find a solution.
Well my "new" battery arrived yesterday.
And it's getting sent back today!!
Got it through Amazon and when the battery arrived it looked ok but would not charge. I took it out to check the contacts and the ribbon came away form the battery! Looks like it was not soldered to the battery properly (if it ever was!) Just glad it didn't cause a short and kill the phone or myself.
Getting one from a different supplier tomorrow. Hopefully this one will work!

Please let me know! I've ordered a third battery just now. The first one was an aftermarket one, the second one was apparently a knock-off, this one was smaller than the original one.
The third one is hopefully a genuine LG one since the reseller is listed on LG their site.
