Hey guys so I bought a Nexus 6P yesterday. Everything works good except the video camera, the 120/240 fps has a lots of grains, when I take it outside it dosent have much problem but I feel its not up to the mark of iphone.
Also when i change orientations from landscape to portrait it lags for a tiny second.
Is it normal to have this issue. Any ideas or fixes?
Similar thing on mine, grain is always there indoors in 240 fps, in 120 fps it's still acceptable (at least when there's some source of light. When i switch orientation on camera it only lags for a couple of tens of milliseconds, same as an iPhone.
So i'm assuming nothing's wrong with my phone

Glad to know I'm not alone.. But it would have been cool if it worked all the time in great quality as I love taking slow mo videos. BTW I don't find the iPhone camera to lag at all .. They always seem to manage software better than anyone else.
I was thinking of getting this replaced but I'm afraid if the other one will come with more serious problems.

Grain is there, because you are shooting stuff indoors, and in 1/240 of a second you get little to none light in to the camera sensor. Also, comparing looks of the 720p footage between iPhone 720p-ish 5 inch screen vs. 2k 5.7 inch screen on Nexus 6p is pointless.
My point is, the footage will look worse on Nexus 6p because it has much bigger resolution and screen.

Yeah that does make sense. I guess I have been really picky on every tiny details of this phone. The stills shots are amazing in the dark

I took a picture and the picture looked good until I zoomed in. Despite taking a "superfine" picture on the maximum available resolution, zooming in resulted in an extremely grainy photograph. Pictures taken on my HTC Raphael running Windows Mobile look far better.
I am still happy with the phone and I am sure the picture quality will be fine for what little I use it for, but I really expected a much higher level of detail.
Have you considered the Galaxy S allows for larger zoom?
I moved the pictures from the Raph to my Galaxy S, so I am viewing them on the same platform.

But the picture you took on your ralph is how many megapixels?
Either way a photo when viewed on a monitor will be resized to 1080 max.your just Digital Zooming farther...megapixel doesn't mean quality..it just means your capturing more
3.2 Megapixels on the Raph. I'm going to mess around with settings and see if I can get a better picture, but I was really hoping for this phone to have everything working well out of the box without tweaking.
It's not disappointing because I wasn't expecting much. But the signal to noise ratio of the pics is low. You can see quite a bit of grain. I do like the color saturation.
Meh, it works as a phone cam.
So far with the GPS/Compass issues and the average quality cam, I'm not considering this a "superphone" or a premium Android device. It's just ok. And I'm ok with that.

it is working well....take your pc and resize the images to 1920x1080...
again megapixels does not give you quality..but allows you for farther zoom..if you zoom in more...I have a 6mp canon camera...when I zoom it it looks grainy as well..but when its printed or uploaded..it is rescaled to proper resolution..then it looks perfect...
More megapixels equals less quality on any small device.
Ps I thought that Vibrant didnt have gps issues, no ?
I noticed the same grainy quality and am slightly disappointed as well. But if you make sure you are in the best mode for your environment the quality improves appreciably. Still, the issue is not happy making.

From what I read...the GPS issue is only with Google Maps when there was one, when using a GPS software there was no issue..but firmware upgrade fixed that either way..
@bdjnk - Again..this is to be expected...megapixels != quality...it only allows for more zoom...the quality when compared was no different then a 5mp canon camera...so far the Galaxy S actually has the best camera of any phone of the same class...

Wrong, the GPS issue is actually more pronounced in other apps, for example, My Tracks.
Firmware upgrade didn't fix anything.
GPS and compass both are ****ty.

Apparently the gallery isn't zooming in on photos like it should. Instead of comparing on your phone in the gallery, transfer the photos to a PC and compare on the PC.

I didn't mention the word megapixel. I was talking about the noticable graininess that exists when viewing pictures, taken with the vibrant, at 100% zoom.

Hm, not really. I am not an expert, but to my eye the same level of noticeable graininess is present on the phone and on my computer.

What I am saying is this is generally normal on an unprocessed image with high megapixel count..resize both images to 1920x1080 (which is maximum screen resolution now) and you can see what the actual quality is...
Or are you expecting the phone to act like microscope?
to explain, if you do 100% zoom a 1mp would look better then a 3mp, a 3mp will look better then a 5mp..a 5mp would look better then a 20mp..its just how it is..

Kicking off this week’s battle between the HTC EVO (unboxing) and Samsung’s Epic 4G (unboxing, update and Media Hub first run), is a post covering the cameras. First, a video walking through the software on each device, followed by a series of video and photo samples. All video samples were shot in 720p HD with reminaing settings left at defaults. Don’t forget to select 720p from the resultion playback menu for the YouTube vids! All still photos have been resized to 600 pixels wide–Epic’s 5MP images were scaled down from 2560 X 1920 (max resolution), and EVO’s 8MP shots were scaled down from 3264 X 1952 (also max resolution). All other settings were left at their defaults.

Yikes, hate to say it...... but you know........
someone needs to figure out how to get our fps up on cam record!!!! this hurts... lol
I really don't understand the fascination of mega pixels on smartphones. It's good for marketing but when it comes to actual use.. you realize that they probably sacrificed the quality of the sensor for a higher number. A good example of this is the FF cam, the EVO's shoots at 1.3 MP and the iPhone 4's shoots at a measly VGA resolution, yet the difference in quality is like night and day (in favor of the iPhone 4).
All things being equal, more is better but I'd still argue that a high MP count is useless on smartphones. It takes up more space and is very, very rarely ever going to be displayed at full resolution. 99% of the photos you take on a smartphone will be resized for use on Facebook/Twitter/MMS/or general web use.
I hope HTC realizes this when designing their future phones.
Does the evo video just suck when its at such a high resolution? Is framerate better when you lower the resolution?
wonder if the fps unlock will effect the video camera as well.
Wow, I used to think our camera was good. Very good comparison though, especially the night video. Even the sound quality on the Epic is great. Too bad everything else about it sucks.
^^ exactly, you're gonna use the camera like what, 1-2 days per month, at the most. But I use my 4.3inch lcd screen every single day. Suck on that.

How do you know how much I use my camera? And I can bet MOST people here use the camera a lot more than 1 - 2 days per month. Plus the Epic's Super AMOLED screen is also A LOT nicer than ours. Thats about all the Epic has over the EVO though.

The CPU/GPU (which downright crushes the EVO) and Super AMOLED screen doesn't suck. I was also pretty satisfied by the size of the display the couple of times that I've seen a Galaxy S phone. It's definitely not perfect but there's no need to be a EVO fanboy.
In my tests with the evo and epic in video, I found some interesting results to me at least. Note, I haven't looked at the article posted by op yet. I found that when both are set to 1280x720 and 640x480, the epic has color saturation that seems closer to real life than the evo. Evo's was exaggerated. The epic's focus seemed a little sharper. Those two resolutions were the only ones I saw that both had in common, so that's what I tested at. One bad thing about the epic was when it was at 1280, after a few minutes or less, the camera app would crash with an error and the video was corrupted. I shortened the time at that resolution to about a minute and the test was fine. I didn't include sound in testing because my car was too noisy and would be too irritating to listen to during playback. I haven't posted them to youtube yet because I want to do an effect of putting both videos together side by side but I can't figure out how to do that easily. I don't have any experience in that end of video editing. I also noticed something that is already known to many people, the evo compresses the video too damn much and the video looks pretty bad sometimes. The filesizes from the epic are noticeably larger because it isn't compressing as much. I forget if there was an encoder choice in the phones or not. I might have remembered that from another rom...
I am not, repeat not, trying to slam the evo. I still love that phone very much. I'm just reporting my findings and opinion.
I have the evo and the epic and the camera is way better on the epic then the evo even taking pictures at night the epic looks like it was day time full color everything on the evo you see pixels from a picture shot in the dark
Send from Your Mothers Basement
makes me wanna trash my evo and get an epic or wait till next year for gingerbread
Wow. HTC can't code camera drivers worth ****t. HTC camera is from the same company as the iPhone 4's camera...I see why Samsung used the phone to film the TV ads...The HD video looks damn good!
Tooo bad the G S has so many other problems that Samsung will never fix. Apple is really good as getting everything working perfectly, at least.

well in that case you should of bought a camera instead.
Samsung always has and probably will continue to have a better phone cameras than HTC. Thats one thing Sammy does right. Too bad the cons outweigh the pros in everything else though.
My Samsung moment pics Id say were on par with the EVO if not a little better, and the max was 5mp with that phone. I never got that motion blur that I get using HTC.
I actually don't care which camera is best or video, it's handy to have for the odd this or that kind of thing. But I carry a camera for quality pictures and a camcorder for movies if I'm going somewhere that I know I will want that sort of thing.
There are times when you just don't have the camera or camcorder handy, so in that case use the phone.
I too got the EVO for the 4.3" screen so I can see it without having to put glasses on.
I just bought the Kodak Playsport HD Camcorder. I doubt the camera issue will ever get fixed

Will the dual camera mode (split screen) still be available? Will it be possible to choose the frame rate, so there isn't a difference between fps for regular footage and split screen footage?
Thanks
As far as I could read in the manual (search for it) it does come with dual video/photo ?
I had a play with the S7 Edge in the Samsung store last night. The camera is stunning!!! One thing that I hated about Samsung devices is that the auto focus was too slow and sometimes didn't focus at all. The focus on the S7 is perfect!!
both cameras of S7 and S7e are not the same?
Same camera
all the vids im seeing with the camera open and reviews , some reason on the screen it looks like the resolution is 4":3 and not widescreen taking up the full phone display like the s6 does , is this the case ? it just looks kind of funny . looking for some more info on this,

Its a 4:3 sensor, if you want full screen you have to drop the mpixels to 9.1
I compared the s7 Edge to my Note 4 at best buy yesterday. The camera did have an obviously lower resolution compared to my Note 4 when zoomed in, the details get blurry on the S7 Edge. But i'm sure the overall quality of the non-zoomed/non-cropped pictures will look better on the S7. Unfortunately they had to trade off megapixels in order to get better low light shots. I'm not a fan of the 4:3 aspect ratio, simply because most screens are close to 16:9 widescreen. And how do we view photos these days? on screens of course So you can switch to 16:9, but end up with a messily 9 mp photo. Still looks good, but you're loosing 7 megapixels worth of information in good/decent lighting scenarios. Overall, I think it might still be worth it if the night photos really are as improved as they claim. Coming from the S6 or Note 5 however, I'm not sure the upgrade is worth it for that alone. But there's other things to consider such as the waterproofing and longer lasting battery. If I could afford to, I would upgrade my Note 4 to the S7E

thanks for the reply so being as its a 4:3 sensor , meaning when we view our images on a wide screen tv on 16:9 aspect ratio they to will not be full screen. ?
I'm wondering if we will see different camera hardware between the Exynos and S820 chip set. It wouldn't be the first time and could explain the current yellowish tint on the S820 models I've seen. There seemed to be none of it on the photos from the test in Barcelona I linked in another thread, presumably that would have been an Exynos model as it's Europe.
it actually might be a upgrade in low light and downgrade in regular light, if we shoot at 16:9, i hate 4:3.
Yup. Me too. I like 16:9 more. But i gotta adapt .

If the quality is better in all condition and mainly at night by good margin, then it's good upgrade, so far it seems not really an upgrade.
But we still don't have review til later this week, with all the improvements it gonna be better.

Right, it'll be just was watching old tv shows where you have black bars on the left and right.
didn't know about that 4:3 well that sucks!

I don't understand why the dual camera mode and split camera MODE are gone from the Galaxy S7. I got mine and those modes I used quite a bit. So I'm a little disappointed because my galaxy s6 edge PLUS had those modes at the higher megapixel count. I want my dual camera mode back.

thats what I have been asking for a long time and still no answer.
as for the 4:3 that is a tough one. I think I will for me keep it at a 4:[email protected] 12.. most main shooter from my understanding dont take pics at 16:9.. its 4:3 or 3:2? I cant remember..
yes the picture will have the black bars on the side but its not that bad. If your viewing them on a tv or tablets you can pinch to zoom in a split second if it matters. You can always format them to 16:9 anytime you want, but dont think its that much of a big deal. Not worth dropping to 9mp imo..
I saw one review in YouTube which concluded that the v20 video ois wasn't as good as...(I can't remember which phone it was comparing it to)...But I just remembered it now....I took a video of my daughter's performance and I noticed it was...shaking or vibrating in some parts because my hand wasn't steady.
Vibrating seems the better description.
Anyways...I did some testing by taking videos and walking around..and from what I can conclude, taking videos as fhd produces that vibrating effect while taking aa video at fhd 60 was prefect.
Wish I knew that before I recorded my daughter's performance....
It was a video comparing to a Pixel. Pretty sad the OIS is worthless.

Noticed the poor IS. Wasn't happy about it. Hoping the fix it. I usually shoot 24-30fps which is supposed to be the sweet spot. No IS at full 4K which is expected. Tells me they're using EIS or basically just frame cropping in other words. It's what YouTube will apply to a video if you ask it. Wish they gave us an option to turn off all IS though so we can see just how well it really is working. I know I have shaky hands so maybe the little shaking I see is a massive improvement. Although, I guess I should try shooting 1080 with it on and 4K which has it off and see how different it is. Also, loud noise like video of certain bands seems to rattle the IS.

Yes the exact same jittery video hastened to me. But changing the video resolution one up gave me a prefect video. Maybe that's why the other video tests show the v20 as best.
I tried to use the V20 for a semi-professional video but it was no good. I had it on a gimbal to ensure it was very smooth, but the shots were "warbly". It was subtle, but made the footage unusable. I played back frame by frame in Premiere Pro and had a hard time pin pointing just what it was. It was like a jitter of some kind. I was shooting FHD 1080p 60 fps. I had to shoot at 60 fps to make it slow motion when I edited it.
So I got a crazy deal on a pixel 2 xl off Craigslist and have been comparing the two phones all weekend. I gotta say I was expecting the pixel too be much better. While it is smoother, but not by much, I'm shocked at how close the cameras are!! I've taken multiple pics and asked my wife to tell me which ones look better. I'd say 6 out of 10 times she picks the essential!! She's even notes that the screen looks better on the ph1.
The first pic is with the essential, portrait mode vs pixel 2 portrait mode.
The pixel and pixel 2 line shines when it comes to low lighting condition. Also video recording using EIS is amazing compared to zero in the essential. Hopefully they enable it soon!

I don't recorded too many videos, mainly use my phone for pics. The sample I posted was in low light and I think the essential pic def looks better.
I know overall when you get crazy into the specs etc the pixel cameras are better. But my point is that they're really close in most cases, sometimes ph1 is better and sometimes the pixel is.
Just wanted to post something since the camera updates cause that's where this phone really gets beat up and I think that's not the case anymore!!!

Oh I totally agreed, the camera is much better now. However, in real low light such as 2700k floor lamp, or night stand light, it struggles horribly and the pics are washed out, and some times have red tint to it. I would upload pics but I am kinda lazy heheh. Will try to post pics later, but I did a huge comparison between gcam hdr+ modes on reddit if u wanna go to see it.
