Thanks a lot for this nice tool (which came in too late for myself, alas). A couple of comments:
- Could you preserve timestamps of incorporated files? It would make comparisons to existing tools easier.
- I understand that ROM size is not an issue, would it be possible to make the debloat deactivations reversible? (e.g. pm disable/hide instead of rm - if something goes wrong there would be a chance to get back functionality)
- Five minutes seem a tad on the low side - I have seen more than that in a single reboot (when cache rebuilds took place).
Nevertheless: Very nice, I hope the tool will be useful to many people unpacking Fires from their stockings!

So I can run this on the stock 5.1.1 firmware by just downloading it to the sd card and install. On home screen open and it will root and install all that is listed?
Thank you in advance

Thanks for this! I just used it on my son's brand new Fire 7" tablet. I had to modify the .sh a little to run the script in Ubuntu http://pastebin.com/C1PXnqxa

Sorry about the unclear instructions. I updated the tutorial. You run the script from your computer with your device on the homescreen. :3

Thank you for clarifying. Will give this a try.

Thanks so much for the suggestions.
- I honestly don't know what you are referring to by this or how to do that, but I'll do it if you can PM me explaining it.
- Sure! I'll do this in the next version or the next, but I promise something like it will be done. :3
-I'll time it tonight and update. The script cuts off the cache rebuilds until the very end.

Thank you, the install went perfectly, this makes the Fire 5.1.1 livable until the bootloader is unlocked. I have encounter one thing, widgets cannot be added to the homescreen. Is this an expected issue or is there something going on with my tablet I need to explore?

I think I know what the problem is. It'll be fixed with the next update, which probably will be less than two hours from now. I appoligise for the inconvenience.

It's just sitting on daemon started successfully for quite a while, is this normal?

not sure what is going on, ran the script and everything went fine. however, the device is still trying to update. it seems like updates weren't blocked or something. i never let it install the initial update though that it tries to do when you turn on the device. i never even connected it to a wifi network so not sure how it can even update
google play services refuses to install as well. not sure what is wrong but seems like there must be some bugs in this script.

That's very odd. Can you attach screenshots and such so I can look into this? Also, try the updated script I have just updated the link too.
If you continue to have problems, adb sideload to start fresh.
I believe you may be getting confused with the "Updating your apps" screen, which is normal. This is android recompiling the cache for the newly installed apps.
What's the error shown when google play doesn"t install?

That's not normal. What OS are you using? Is Android Debugging enabled on your device and did you allow the "Accept debugging from this computer?" prompt on your tablet?

The Fire logo with "Updating Apps..." is normal. :3 It should be gone after two reboots.
As for the google play problem, It sounds like you need to clear the data and relogin to google. Was there anything relating to google play on your device previously before the script? You may have to be connected to wifi for google play to download updates, if you still aren't.

ok i went in and cleared everything in the google framework and play store, now when i try to open play store it just spins. will not load. any suggestions? no idea what the problem could be.
EDIT - ok finally got it. for some reason it just started working. i think there must have been a notfication that was showing which i didn't accept

Glad to hear! Usually the infinite spinning wheel means you need to accept the terms of use. :3

Everything worked fine, just one note that seems to be a side affect. I had a childs profile setup before running the script, now I cannot change settings or delete the profile.

unable to purchase paid apps googleplay

hi guys, as the title says...
I have cleared cache and data,
tried deleting my account and adding it again
reflashed my rom (taboonay 3.01.)
As soon as hit purchase I get "an error occurred. Please try again".
I can purchase via my phone and pc with no probs but not on my tab. Free apps are fine its just the paid ones, oh, and the in game apps wont either.
My next step is to factory reset but hoping someone may be able to help before having to go down that route.
ps I tried using my tabs browser to get to the webstore and successfully made a purchase - yay!! unfortunately it failed to download and the market shows no evidence of me having purchased it -boo!!. Emailed for a refund which i rec'd - phew!!
Which error code have you been receiving?
I know there have been issues with the market for a while now, and a lot of it is on google's side.
I had that on 3.2, same error.
What I did, was delete the current vending.apk
Copy in a different Market.apk, renamed it to vending.apk
Checked permissions to make sure they were the same as all other files in the same directory.
Then, go to App Manager, and delete the caches for the Market app.
Reboot, then do the sign in thing again for the market. It will eventually update itself. Should be good to go.
No error code is given, just what I posted "an error occurred. Please try again" as soon as I hit "Accept and Download".
I emailed googleplay support who inferred that my custom rom was at fault, typical support answer!! no-one else running taboonay seem to have issues so will wait a few days and try a full wipe an' format.
@moscow - thanks will try your suggestion first moscow, cheers
edit: seems there are some peeps psoting the same issue in the taboonay thread - i should have begun reading the newer posts, rather than older ones first...
new googleplay update 3.5.15
apparently there has been an update to googleplay i don't know when and not sure which version i currently running - not until i get home anyway.
i got the apk from droid-life if anyone wants it
I'm getting the same errors . Anyone have any ideas?
Tried moscows suggestion but no joy
So, factory reset, full wipe and full format and still no joy...
fixed...sorta
k, i just restored an icylicious backup and success!!! Heaven knows why it wont work on taboonay for some of us - anyways, if anyone comes up with a proper solution pls feel free to post it...
Did you try to download a free app first and then a payed one ?
I never had market problems and I flash almost every day clean install for testing.
I would suggest to keep trying and first a free app.
I added the phonesky.apk (original acer vending app) ,
First remove the playstore or vending app (depending on what it is called) in system/app with file manager with root.
Then copy / paste the phonesky.apk in that system/app folder and reboot but make sure before you do this all to clear cache and data of market app in settings apps.

12. tear hair out...
thanks for trying civ - i think i did the steps as you meant them to be done - it just won't work... I really wanna keep taboonay so looks like I'll have to switch to icylicious to purchase and install and then switch back to taboonay - weird!!!

Yes, that is an option, Are u on taboonay? -I tried the webstore but it gives me 9 or 10 different devices for my one and only tab!! I picked one and tho the purchase went thru fine - it never downloaded to tab so dunno where it ended up. Becoz it never actually got to my tab, I never got the refund option - had to email support for that, so i figure its easier to switch roms
Something that seemed to work for me
EDIT: It was crazy just tried to buy xda app and failed...... Ignore the rest of this post!!!
It might sound a bit crazy, but after doing a full format have you tried installing a HC ROM and making a purchase / downloading something free, then installing Tabooney 3.0.1 again? I had a ROM that was causing me the same issues + many others with certain apps I use alot, so I scrapped ICS for a month or so and used a couple of other ROMS (all HC) then tried Tabooney again. Amazingly it worked and purchases went through... Maybe not 'everythnig' is fully cleared out and installing a HC ROM killed the issue?? Not too sure, but I no longer have purchasing issues on my Desire HD or A500 with ICS... Just rage face when apps crash and playstore shuts and random stuff stops responding for a few seconds! (just removed ICS from my A500 after the GPS once again started teleporting me into fields and other roads from what i was on again... dam I want to be able to have a solid ICS ROM )
Anyways hope that helps someone

I am on Taboonay. When you pull the drop down menu for the devices, there should be a date you used it last next to each. I think there used to be a way to remove old device names from the list but I can't recall where or how right now.

k, i used the latest date and tried to install a previously purchased app, got the "will be d/l to your device shortly" after 30 mins I'm still waiting...
one thing I've noticed, I d/l a couple of free apps from the playstore on my tab. They are installed. The webstore however, shows them in 'My Apps' but to install only - therefore, they are not installed according to the webstore. So, I'm thinking perhaps the devices that are showing are ones that I have registered thru acer when I have intalled a new rom??? does that make sense - I know what I'm trying to say just not sure its comin out right, lol.
If i download apps in the market/playstore but the webstore don't see them as installed AND trying to d/l from the webstore to a "device" leaves me waiting, waiting, waiting. Then the webstore is not seeing the current "device" that I'm using??? Maybe becoz its not registered???? If u r on taboonay could u check to see if this is the case for you???
EDIT: I went to acer to register. Entered my SNID and it tells me it is INVALID...the plot thickens....

Actually, after thinking about this, the latest date that shows might be the one you chose in the online store before, the one that didn't work. Try this- go into the google play app and Install a free app. Doesn't matter which one. Then, go to the online store and see if the name of the latest used device is any different. Mine is called Acer A500 by the store, if that helps.
I have a different issue.. I have rooted my A501, flashes moscow's alexandria rom, activated market enabler but still no luck in buying paid apps.. "The item you were attempting to purchase could not be found"
Any help?

Play store works

Hi guys,
I got play store working following the instructions for HDXposed on the fire hdx tablet here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2618158
and installing google services / apps based on these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787813
combined with instructions here on how to set xbmc as the default launcher:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786618
and the ability with amber xbmc skin to run android apps from the homescreen (including KFTV Launcher) this is finally shaping up to some goodness.
confirmed working for me, i just followed the instructions in the Second Link posted above only, play store is functioning normally with paid apps showing and installing properly.
IT WORKS!
thanks!!! it works like a charm
Just thought I'd chime in here and confirm also.. Good find

Have any of you attempted to install play store apps before?
These instructions did not work for me. Maybe due to previous install attempts.
Even when I clear data and uninstall the apps then re-install, it still has my account name there and I get 'NO CONNECTION - RETRY"
May have to Reset box again.

i had previously installed the store with no luck prior to today. i just installed the apks from the second link above after installing xposed, restarting, and enabling the HDXposed module. The store started right up.
@jljaries42 if you haven't tried already, used titanium backup to uninstall the existing versions then try this method
@nhumber did you already have the first step xposed installed or you skipped it altogether and it's working for you?

Followed instructions to a T.. not a newb here but did not work for me.. perhaps you had allready done something else before doing that? When i launch the play store it never opens.. (well opened for a brief second then goes back to launcher)
Worked for me no problem! Even grabbed a few of my emulators from the play store. Thanks.
Working now
Used Titanium to get rid of old google apps/data
Re-installed google apps.
Most important - enable Xposed module - CHECK THE BOX
Reboot gave me a scare - it displayed the FireTV update screen - Installing new software. But no update occurred.
Even then it had 'NO Connection'
Cleared play store data - Then it worked

I had had Google play store, framework and services etc... Installed before and it had said no connection. When trying to run play store. Before following the instructions above I had uninstalled all of the Google apps through the amazon settings-apps menu except the one that doesn't show (play services?). That one I installed over the old one using adb install -r package name.apk. and it worked. Have you also enabled 3rd party sources with sqlite editing of the settings.db?
I already had everything installed from my previous attempts I just installed the exposed modules and cleared data on the play store
How is everyone getting around everything saying it isn't compatible?

Hi, I'm trying to make this work. I installed everything. Installation seems fine. I launch xposed framework. It sees HDXPosed modele BUT using the FTV remote if I click on it to activate I receive a "This module doesnt provide a user Interface" and the module remains inacttive.
If I try to launch Google Play store is appears for a moment then shuts down. I think it depends by the fact the module is not active.
Since I dont have a keyborad right now, is there a way to activate it manually?
Thanks.

If you follow the procedure on the xbmc wiki it does in fact go to sleep. It is the method i use.
Also adb after rebooting and trying a few different things... i adb install -r all the apk's again and that seemed to do it.
Not sure why it didnt work the first time.

disable automatic updating?

last night i was using my nexus player and out of nowhere it just randomly decided to shut down. next thing i know upon reboot it tried to update but since im rooted and such it failed. the problem here was that it screwed up boot and i had to wipe the cache which erased most settings.
Is there a way to make the nexus player not try to automatically update? disable update in settings for that matter (in case someone tried to get cute and do it while im not around)?

LOL!!!! I'm going through this frustration right now. Couple things I've done first install a custom recovery it won't let you update. if you do get the endless bootloop clear cache and it will stop (the update is downloaded to the cache). It might do that twice then will pass. This worked for me until factory restored my device. I ended up forgetting and now I'm marshmallow.
Next thing I'm gonna try is pushing a build.prop from the next update to /system. It hasn't been pushed yet but they usually release it on the site with the factory images. If I don't flash aosp first.
Yes but i wonder if theres a way to disable it. it sucks that i have to clear cache every time it attempts to update. its happened 3 times on me now. i will try to install my own custom recovery so hopefully thats all thats needed but i noticed android also downloads the update in the background, which probably wastes more space if your not planning on upgrading.
Once you clear the cache it deletes the update. Almost forgot I read some where here on xda that deleting otacerts.zip will stop it from downloading entirely. Not suggesting you try it but next update I'm gonna
You might want to try the method I suggested at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62865084&postcount=6 and see if that works or not.
Thanks for your solution but unfortunately, at least for me, i cant seem to get it to work. i can sideload and launch the disable service app, but when i try going to ANY actual apps or system services, it just crashes. Not sure why. :/

Tried this, and while it did stop the download from verifying, it just caused the nexus player to loop over and over by constantly downloading the update again, only to fail and repeat the process. This worked for a couple of days while i found the proper workaround, so thanks. keep in mind though that because it just caused the device to keep redownloading, this method could cause those on limited data plans to quickly go over.

for whatever reason service disabler did not want to work for me. it caused a constant crash every time i tried clicking on any service within the app. I did however, eventually come across "My Android Tools" by the same developer as service disabler. Using this app i was able to disable the systemupdateservice within both google framework and google play services. I had to use a bluetooth mouse to navigate though, as the remote didnt want to work on its own. Once i used this app and followed your directions, now when i attempt to do a manual system update in settings, it just acts like im on the current version, which i assume means it fails instantly. Thanks so much man! so far so good!
For anyone curious, the app is:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.myandroidtools&hl=en
keep in mind you may need to connect a mouse somehow to the nexus player to navigate and disable the services.
Thanks I'm gonna downgrade today and find out

I'm glad to hear that things worked out for you with this method and the alternate app by the same developer. I've been running Android 6.0 Marshmallow after flashing its factory image but once the monthly security updates and unwanted reboots in to TWRP start happening, I may disable the updates using this method.
How do you sideload either service disabler app? Neither are listed on apkmirror and searching the play store in browser doesn't give an option to install for nexus player.

Copy and paste the Google Play URL for the app (which was posted earlier in this thread) in to box at the top of https://apkpure.com/region-free-apk-download and press the green download button. Then upload the APK to your Google Drive account and install it through ES File Explorer on your Nexus Player.
please correct me if I'm wrong
As the title said, please correct me if I'm wrong but this method isn't working in the nexus player MRA58K since the apk used to disable the updated only supports Lolipop, I tried in my nexus 7 running 5.0 and it's working flawless but the apk crash on Android 6.0, thanks in advance for your help.

Not for me. After granting "my android tools" access, I go to disable systemupdateservice, and popup says it can't access root privelages ( Supersu is up to date. I'm not really sure why I even rooted and installed twrp recovery on this device, but I wish I had stock recovery back so I wouldn't be in this mess.
@pokes135, make sure you have the latest version of My Android Tools installed. You can flash a stock system or recovery image using Nexus Root Toolkit if necessary.

You can install a firefox browser addon called apk downloader which will inject a button when you view the app in google play website to download the apk.
Use any root explorer or es file explore
make/mount system as rw
navigate to /system/etc/security
rename otacerts.zip into otacerts.zip.bak or whatever you want.
It will stiop the automatic update completely.
If you need ota update you need to rename th otacerts.zip back
Virus in My Android Tools APK?
I'm also trying to disable automatic updating of my rooted nexus player for the same reasons everyone else is but when I try to download the My Android Tools apk I get his virus warning.

Thanks for the info. Much more straight forward to do then sideloading app while hoping the app won't force close.
adb connect 192.168.xxx.xxx:5555
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip /system/etc/security/otacerts-disabled.zip
mount -o remount,ro /system
Pr-requisite: must be rooted and ADB Wireless already installed.
Don't use this method (renaming ota_certs)! It will just cause the updates to continuously download and fail, then start downloading again. You'll use a lot of bandwidth this way, and if you have a data cap, this is a sure fire way to bust through it.

Changing Launcher?

I bought one of these for my mom hoping it wouldn't be so well locked down. Has anyone managed to change their launcher from the default Amazon(Ad-laden) launcher? Sideloaded Nova but no dice there.
While Nova runs fine you can't replace the amazon launcher. I believe it was possible on pre 5.1.1 fire OS. Until we get root we'll just have make do.
If you're interested in changing the default firelauncher without rooting your device, please take a quick peak at my thread discussing the possibilties.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8...zon-fire-hd-8-10-remove-firelauncher-t3286646
If you are currently rooted, which as of today is not possible on HD 8 & HD 10, you simply delete the com.amazon.firelauncher.apk in /system/priv-apps/com.amazon.firelauncher/, you will need to boot into fastboot and remount the system as rw if I am correct.
I hope this helps . Again, please check my thread for non-root information, it is currently unfinished.
Here is an updated tutorial on how to change the default launcher without rooting!

Edit: Found a second method that is even better!

while you're method may work, it's far from optimal.
it's not possible to just rename another launcher and replace the FireOs launcher? i suppose that would be too easy.
if it were my tablet, i'd be more inclined to play around with it. unfortunately, my mom is content enough with it how it is, though i can see it being a beast and would **** around more if it were mine.
hopefully root comes soon. unfortunately, i can't help work towards it.
when all of that is said and done, i'll build a rom and kernel for it, np.

I found a new method that actually works very very well, just run this in adb shell:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
am monitor | while read -r line; do
if [[ $line == *"firelauncher"* ]]
then
[B]am start com.newlauncher.launcher[/B]
fi
done

Little bash script like that. I'll give it a try when I have time. Sleek enough, and if effective it's great.

The only downside to the script is when you press the home button, there is a delay of 500ms or so, you see the firelauncher for that time.
It is not nohup or anything so it will stop working when you close adb shell (easy to do yourself, but I am preoccupied at the moment).
Why not root?
So I was actually able to ROOT my kindle fire hd 8 with the kingroot method.
After installing the apk.
Loaded it up let it try to find a root solution and it will not but you can try rooting with the other method and it WORKED for me. Never been so happy!
So after that I loaded adb shell in command prompt and typed "su" to see if I had root and it WORKED again, so I am even more happier!
Now after typing in "su" into command prompt I then typed in,
Code:
pm disable com.amazon.firelauncher
and it was successful..
NOTE: you must have another launcher installed before you do this! I had GOLauncher.
The End <3
P.S. I had installed the necessary files from rootjunky's "Amazon Fire Tablet Tool" or also known as installing google play store method..
Any questions hit me up, I have rebooted and still have root and things intact. Haven't had any problems as of yet. WOOT for ROOT

After messing around the go launcher ex is a little buggy. I might try another, currently trying to figure out how to get widgets to work and once I do ill let you know the system file.
Any ideas what I should add to the fire os? Current goal is widgets
So after doing some research I believe it won't be possible on the fire cause the system files are missing. From what I've seen I feel like the new 5 the gen tablets are all the same, can't confirm it yet but if so you should be able to follow the instruction given on the kindle 7 5th gen able about booting up into twrp or cm and installing a new Rom. I'm not sure if I want to do this though. Adw launcher feels empty without widgets though

I can confirm that with the latest KingRoot apk on my HD8 (5th Generation) the rooting worked. As a launcher I had before Nova and Google Now via Play Store installed. I prefer the Google Now Launcher. The Home button, the Wallpaper and the Widgets are working. Thanks for the hot rooting tip.

Does your google play store actually work? I can get it to load but once the front page is loaded, I can't search or get anything else to load on google play. It's just a continuous load. Could you let me know what framework you have. Also I cant get widgets to work on mine. Have Adw and cant get google now to work. If you can I think you should make a posts on the HD 8 and 10 thread letting us know what you did to get where you are now. Anyways I'm going to message you in a lil bit.
So I got google launcher installed and moved it to system app and now widgets work. Only problem I'm facing now is getting google play to stay working. Sometimes log me out or just stops loading traffic to the app. Any ideas? I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it but still no.

I had in the past the same problems. After I had uninstalled the complet apk's and reinstalled the following apk's:
Google Account Manager_4.0.3-239410.apk,
Google Play services_4.0.34 (924341-38).apk,
Google Services Framework 4.0.4-338691.apk ,
and
Google Play Store 4.4.21.apk,
I had no trouble. The Google Play Store worked now fine on my HD8 with firmware 5.1.1.

Thanks for supplying the APKs. This should help me as right now infos are jumbled all across this forum and need to be cleaned up a bit.
I'd love to do a nice/clean .bin people can flash after the dust has settled. Hopefully without kingroot. Wish I knew the kingroot devs.
Also, everyone needs to slow down. We have root in a way, but we need to make sure everyone is on the same page. Don't let this forum become a mess.
Right now, it is a huge mess.. The original root thread is smart to post on and maybe the tips and tricks thread. Stop spreading things out too much. We need it all in one place, really

Yeah sorry I'm trying my best to clean up my thread a little and easy to read as much as possible. Also I figured out how to fix google play if it isn't working. Look at tips,Tricks, and the Root thread if anyone is wondering.

The Play Store just un-rooted my HD8/deleted SuperSU, w/out my permission - WTF?? ?

I'm angry/confused - has anyone else had this happen to their device?
Last night, I sat down and rooted one of my 2017 HD8 tablets, following the damn-amazing Experimental Software Root method as recently uncovered and shared with us by @diplomatic. I then installed SuperSU (from the damn Play store!) to take the root from temporary to permanent.
I spent the last 24 hours FINALLY being able to use my Fire tablet as a semi-solid/functional personal computing device, finally able to really setup the device to perform as I need it to, and I've been very happy with how everything turned out.
Well, I just came back to my desk to find a message from "Play Protect," (a feature/service I ALWAYS turn off in Play Store settings, on all of my devices):
App Removed by Play Protect: SuperSU
This app can allow unauthorized access to your data or device.
(see images attached).
I checked and no longer have root status. Also, now I can't install any .apk files whatsoever. WTF??!
I downloaded SuperSU... FROM THE PLAY STORE...! The app is listed and available for installation from/by the Play Store (see attached photo).
So, I guess now I will just re-root and hope in the future Google chills the F out/gets their creepy little hands out of my device/data. Maybe I should freeze the Play Store/Play Services? I just wanted to see if anyone else had ever had this happen to them/if there is a recommended solution. SO annoying!!! ??‼?‼??
(pardon my grumpiness/I feel a little bit better now, post vent ?)
Ok - I'll stop whining now... ?
I was able to recover root by simply reinstalling "SuperSU" from the Play Store. Hopefully it was just a fluke and everything will stay where it should be.

I had a similar experience today when updating some apps I got from the Google Play Store. During the updates, it deleted my SuperSU with no warning or asking permission. Luckily, it didn't affect my root as far as I can tell. I too got SuperSU from the Play Store. It is DEFINITELY annoying !
Two things when installing play store. Always good to 1) immediately turn off auto updates the second you sign in. 2) turn off play protect.
As soon as play services updates, all apps will start to update if they are allowed. So make sure to look at 'my apps', and make sure none are stuck in que. If so, tap 'stop all'.
I am having the exact same issue. Nothing seems to be working no matter what I disable. it keeps removing supersu
Has anyone tried anything that works?

Just don't update from the play store unless you downloaded it there and if you do update, do so manually by downloading standalone apk and installing it through documents or a root explorer. I'm trying to work on a fix for this version in some form. We can't flash it unless you use the modified version on the stock rom thread because we aren't quite 64 bit yet. Flashing the standard zip will bootloop. So I've been experimenting with a totally manual install, including rooting the boot.img so when the apk is installed it doesn't perform the auto install embedded into it. So far, though I don't really know yet, it appears to be a success. One of the issues, I think, was the installation of the 64 bit library file. Either it install it, but in the regular lib folder, or doesn't install it at all or does install but doesn't set proper permissions (guesswork). So I added the necessary files by unpacking and repacking the boot.img. This is not a final version.I'm, but If anyone is interested in trying it out I can upload the boot.img.
