So, I called 911 today... - Nexus 6 General

... To report an accident that thankfully I was fortunate enough not to be part of. After I hung up with the state police, I noticed this notification.

i am pretty sure this is built into android for years. iphones do ths ame thing. it disables yoru data to ensure that 911 can call you back if needed so that there is a definite cellular connection

For once we agree on something. IT didnt make since to me either. Data signal would not interfere with a cell call

Except it would if you were using a CDMA carrier. I know it said LTE on the Screenshot but if the Fallback is CDMA then it needs to disable the Data function to insure calls can be sent and received. GSM/WCDMA it doesn't apply. I think it is just turned on all phones by default just to make sure.

Not so sure about that as like I said I have never seen this and I have to use 911 at least a few times a month.

It does make sense for several reasons. I actually work in emergency services. It puts your phone into an enhanced 911 mode where 911 dispatchers can GPS locate you. They also disable data because remember when you couldn't have data and voice at the same time? This is to ensure they can call you back. Google it if you don't believe me.

It's never been an issue for GSM users, just CDMA. So people who never had Verizon/Sprint have probably never had that issue. No idea about the notification, I've not had to use 911 for a long while now. It does make sense to have that mode though, just to be on the safe side. And if it also allows 911 dispatchers to access your GPS location, it's good that it shows the notification. I don't mind them being able to, but I like to know that it's happening. 5 minutes without data is a small price to pay for that.

Ok that could make since. It would also explain whyt I dont see it as I disable just about everything dealing with emergency broadcasts and anything that requires gps needs a pin code to activate. So they couldnt lock on to it if they wanted to.
Now while this may come in handy in the states it is completely useless elswhere.
Come to think about it. Could also be the custom AOSP based rom that I run that has most of that removed.

You can click the notification and hit "end now", or at least you can on pure and aosip

I cant have data and voice at the same time true... But if I stream a youtube video is does not stop calls from coming in, even though answering the call does stop the video stream.

Sounds like they are covering the worst case scenario. You could be roaming on a cdma carrier even though your carrier is gsm. If you are on Project FI you could be on either at any given time plus they want to make sure they get a accurate gps location in case you phone in a bomb threat or something.

Just a thought, are you selecting EVDO Only? If so i had the same issue. The phone would not receive calls or text, must select hybrid and all is well.

Sprint uses EVDO for data, and the 1X network for calls and texts. So if you're forcing EVDO, you're stopping your phone from switching to 1X, and therefore can't receive calls or texts. Yeah, I'd say Sprint knows, they built their network that way on purpose.

Cuts down on Network traffic and not to mention if you start a call on EVDO and drop the signal to 1x, you drop the call. so for fewer "dropped calls" they force you on 1x where coverage is much greater than evdo.
Iphone still has this issue where AT&T allows calls over 3g. Theres 500 thousand apps that turn off EVDO on an iphone durring a call. There may even be a few for Android.

Its not that Sprint built their network that way. Its that CDMA technology, is built THAT way. Its a difference between GSM and CDMA. That's why ATT and T-mobile can use data while talking while neither Verzion Sprint can't...
GSM has voice and data fully digital.
CDMA has digital data and analog (1x) voice.
Maybe I can get my gfs hero warranty'd out for this. All the paint chipped off her red button and they wouldn't get her a new one. I bet not getting calls would do the trick...

That's happening to my hero :/
Sprint doesn't know about this apparently becuase before I started this thread I was on the phone with "advanced" tech support for an hour and they never mentioned to check that setting.
I just today had bestbuy replace my phone for the paint peeling on the end button. It seems like it is a common flaw with these phones. However I was under my 30 days.
I can not get them to warranty the paint peeling on mine either. Any ideas how to get them to replace it?

Skype Mobile apk on T-Mo?

Is there any chance the Skype mobile apk file could be modified to work on T-Mo network?
Of course this thread might get the easy answers such as:
1) "No"
2) "It cant be done"
3) "It checks verizon's network?"
... but I'd be happier to hear from experts that know how it actually works/could be done.
Verizon skype apk: http://www.sendspace.com/file/rnwab1
No. It cant be done. It checks verizon's network.
Ok, helpful now... There's no need for Skype mobile.
Using it to call normal phone numbers uses minutes. The only free part is using it to call other Skype numbers. And you can already use Fring or Sipdroid from the Market to do this (AND do VoIP calls to normal numbers), so the Skype mobile app for Verizon is pretty much just crap.

Yeah your right it is pretty crappy that Skype put those restrictions on it by sleeping with the enemy (Big Red).
I was just going to see if it could work on T-Mo though because then I could get my family members to use it as well and make good quality voip calls like I could on the iPhone version.
SIPdroid is dear to my heart but the quality on outbound calls is pretty unusable for me, inbound is still good though. I tell all my friends that "if you get a call from me, dont pick up and just call me back."
Fring 3g quality was serviceable before but it was laggy (I would say something and the other person would start talking and then mid sentence would hear what I said and it would mess up the conversation). It probably has had some updates though so I will try it out again.
dunno if this helps but i read somewhere today that vonage is coming to tmobile and att with calls over wifi capability.
3 has got this for a long time now (no Android client yet) but the acctual calling is routed using a gsm center, no VOIP at all. I have installed the apk for t-mobile and it almost does the same thing ( it doesn't work outside tm network)

It looks like free USA calls, but only over wifi.

Thanks for the info you guys! I've made 3 calls over WiFi with Vonage app and the customer service reps say I sound crystal clear
Now for the real challenge boys... Since Vonage can make free domestic calls over wifi. How do we trick the N1, like on jailbroken iPhone's, into thinking its on wifi even if its on 3g?
Edit: The wifi calling is 100% free, dont add any money even if the app asks you for it (just press the back button to get rid of the prompt)

How do you KNOW it was making calls over wifi?
I just signed up and installed it, and no matter what I do, it always calls from my normal phone number, rather than my Google Voice number, which is what I chose during the sign up process.
Also, turning Airplane mode on and then turning Wifi on doesn't let me make any calls. It says disable airplane mode.
Is there a way to KNOW 100% whether the call is being routed over wifi or normal phone?

On my end I can guarantee that its making the calls through WiFi because of the data only plan I am on. T-Mo has two different types of $40/mo data plans:
1) $40/mo with T-mo hotspot access but cannot make ANY calls (except 911)
2) $40/mo without T-mo hotspot access but can make calls for $.10/min
I have the first option and if I try to make a regular call it says "the service you are attempting to use has been restricted or unavailable" and hangs up. Even if I try to make a call through GVoice it says the same thing so I know I cant make any cellular calls. But I can make a call through the Vonage app with WiFi (although I do have to have on Edge/3g with the WiFi your right).
I just checked my T-Mobile account as well and I dont see any minutes used either.
Now if only we can get this thing to think its on WiFi even if only on 3g!

When I set GV to not call intercept, it will just call using my normal phone number. Vonage just sits there doing nothing.
A few times the Vonage dialer has popped up (if I had GV set to make ALL calls), but then Vonage crashed (Force Close).
Bleh, must be an issue with the Desire caller =\
Fring is flawless with skype dumb easy to setup for idiots like myself
I use it w/o a simcard in my g1 and keep my sim in the n1
I tried this vonage doesn't seem to work with the sim card out or in...if any one can post the correct steps to make domestic calls over wifi on the vonage app please(w/o a sim card it the only sure way to know its using wifi only)

Has anyone ever lost data connectivity after receiving a phone call?

I've had this issue occur several times. It's not 100% repeatable, but occasionally I lose 3G, 1X and all data connectivity after receiving a phone call.
I do NOT have WIFI enabled when this happens. I've seen posts referring that issue.
When this happens the only cure is a full power down reboot. Toggling Airplane mode doesn't work, infact it just hangs trying to toggle the mode. Toggling Mobile Network in settings doesn't work either.
I've seen this problem since the very first 2.2 leak on 7/27. I've also seen this running Virtuous 2.0 rom. I don't think this is ROM related, rather a generic 2.2 or radio issue (I've seen this happen on the 2.05 and 2.15 radio)
This problem seems to happen in low signal conditions.
Any ideas?
That's how it is with Verizon CDMA, no simultaneous voice and data. There is a network upgrade they can apply to correct it and give them more efficient use of bandwith as well but I guess they are not interested. I hear they are going GSM in the next few years anyway.

I wonder what that has to do with it. I thought that had to do with roaming which I wasn't.

I think that's mostly what they say first for any network problem.
It sounds like you have an app that is fouling your data connection. Do you have any third-party phonebook/contact list apps? I'd look there first.
As for the *228 Option 2 (or the PRL path for your carrier), that is standard telco procedure for "get off my phone, I want to go back to having my thumb up my backside." All it does is update your Preferred Roaming List.
You could try Option 1 or 3, which are programming related, but if your rep tells you Option 2, do not lie & tell them you just did it. VZW's system tells the rep the last time you did - including the date of your activity. However, you can snicker, knowing you got a loser rep.
Warning - listen carefully when using O1 or O3. Let it repeat the instructions if you're not 100% sure, else you will be calling tech support & possibly getting one of the losers. Or, you could get a gem. BTW - O3 is hidden - you have to trust it is there.

Phone no longer ringing when the network is 4G LTE

Using the phones on Sprint.
Since three weeks or so, while on LTE, the incoming voice calls are going directly to voice mail.
Sprint looked at it and changed the Network to 3G and now getting a ring for the incoming calls.
Basically, I am forced to run the phones on 3G service.
Need to go to a service center (which is very far for me) to have the phone looked at.
Anyone facing similar issue?
PS: 2 of the 3 PH-1 phones I have, are having the issue.

Google have updated the dialer recently several times, could it be a bug that shows on Sprint, or do you have spam settings on, which I know has caught other people out. Check/play with spam settings in her dialer app.
(other areas I might check (if not dialer or network). I assume all phones were working before correctly, right? Are they different sims or the same sim in different phones? New sims, ie not old one you have cut down hat are old spec. Do lte settings match on different phones?)

Same issue. Did you get it fixed?
I also have this problem on Sprint.
Sometimes restarting the phone fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't.
Between this and no longer being able to use Google Voice without using a separate number, I think it's time for me to bail on Sprint.
My wife had this issue a bit back. Only happened when the phone was using VoLTE (verified by a debug menu, *#*#4636#*#*, showing both voice/text and data marked as LTE).
Fix was to disable the Enhanced 4G LTE communications option, which forced the phone too fallback to nonVoLTE while still using LTE for data. Again confirmed using the phone information menu which showed voice as 1xRTT and data as LTE.
Hope this help and that we can get a better fix soon.

Maybe he will learn to read... And realize his device is no more valuable than anyone else's...
But probably not...

Didn't work for me either but I figured it out... what I had to do is change a setting under Google Voice in Settings under the tab CALLS change to "Use carrier only" and I did have to turn VoLTE off. I left the Preferred network type as LTE. Phone is working well now, with T-mobile and Google Voice I have been testing it all morning.
:highfive:

Any fix for no data while in a call??

I realized while in a call the mobile data is gone which might be normal perhaps because it can only handle one thing through the modem......
I'm not sure, but just wanted to know if its not normal then anyone found a fix?
Thanks
Depends on the carrier, which carrier do you have?

Sounds like you changed settings to LTE only to force VoLTE without carrier support. That would be the behavior to expect under such circumstances. Not saying you did btw.

Thanks but no, I'm not forcing lte as there's no Volte here.
If there was then the problem wouldn't exist as those calls would go through mobile data and in that case the data wouldn't be cut.
Again, from what I've read around it really has to do with modem not being able to support 2 things at the same time like call (regular) + mobile data.
I just wanted to confirm more people are having this and that this behavior is kind of expected and not a glitch. As generally I have WiFi on I had never realised this until yesterday that I had WiFi off and was on a very long call and realised I couldn't access the Web at all.
same here

Did you ever find anything out i'm experiencing the same thing?
In my experience (not with this device) if there is lte link when placing a call, the data would fallback on 3g network. If no lte, there will be no data at all

And you're right, it does depend on carrier, however OP never told us. Lol. My brother has US Cellular and there is no data while on voice calls. That's just how their network is.
