I've had this issue occur several times. It's not 100% repeatable, but occasionally I lose 3G, 1X and all data connectivity after receiving a phone call.
I do NOT have WIFI enabled when this happens. I've seen posts referring that issue.
When this happens the only cure is a full power down reboot. Toggling Airplane mode doesn't work, infact it just hangs trying to toggle the mode. Toggling Mobile Network in settings doesn't work either.
I've seen this problem since the very first 2.2 leak on 7/27. I've also seen this running Virtuous 2.0 rom. I don't think this is ROM related, rather a generic 2.2 or radio issue (I've seen this happen on the 2.05 and 2.15 radio)
This problem seems to happen in low signal conditions.
Any ideas?
That's how it is with Verizon CDMA, no simultaneous voice and data. There is a network upgrade they can apply to correct it and give them more efficient use of bandwith as well but I guess they are not interested. I hear they are going GSM in the next few years anyway.

I didn't mean to imply that they work at the same time. I meant no data connectivity after I hang up.

Oooh. Well I've had 3 of these phones now and I have had that problem also. Verizon told me to update the network by calling *228 and choosing option 2. Seemed to help.

I wonder what that has to do with it. I thought that had to do with roaming which I wasn't.

I think that's mostly what they say first for any network problem.
It sounds like you have an app that is fouling your data connection. Do you have any third-party phonebook/contact list apps? I'd look there first.
As for the *228 Option 2 (or the PRL path for your carrier), that is standard telco procedure for "get off my phone, I want to go back to having my thumb up my backside." All it does is update your Preferred Roaming List.
You could try Option 1 or 3, which are programming related, but if your rep tells you Option 2, do not lie & tell them you just did it. VZW's system tells the rep the last time you did - including the date of your activity. However, you can snicker, knowing you got a loser rep.
Warning - listen carefully when using O1 or O3. Let it repeat the instructions if you're not 100% sure, else you will be calling tech support & possibly getting one of the losers. Or, you could get a gem. BTW - O3 is hidden - you have to trust it is there.

I fulfilled my quest to get a data only plan on the Atrix by buying an AT&T mifi and just putting the SIM card in my atrix. This required creating a new APN for isp.cingular, and for about 4 months this worked great with a pure voip setup.
A few days ago something happened. My Atrix seems to be stuck on EDGE. It will no longer connect to HSPA in the same locations that it used to be H+ 24 hours a day.
The basics have been covered: power cycling, airplane mode cycling. No use. The SIM itself seems okay since I tried putting it back in the mifi unit, and it got 3G like normal. That also rules out a tower problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I feel like an ass now since I bought the mifi on contract.
You can call At&t and switch it to a voice plan with an hspa data plan so you can use your atrix.
Kind of admitting defeat though.

Perhaps try flashing a different radio on the atrix. It could be an Incompatibility issue ? Worth a shot I would say

So, I tried flashing different radios. No luck. After that I thought maybe some fresh ROMs might do it some good. No luck on Alien, and then I installed CM7 and noticed something interesting. The "Use only 2g networks" setting is stuck on. I turn it off, go back, and soon as I look again it's on. Is there something special you have to do to save it, or could this be pointing to an underlying problem?

Nothing special is needed to save it. It could be throttling by AT&T do to your imei being that of an Atrix vs a mifi.

The problem with the mifi is its terrible battery life. It only gets 4 hours in hotspot mode. If it could last as long as my phone, I wouldn't even mind carrying around two devices, but it doesn't.
Anyway, great news. After listening to everyone's suggestions I took the SIM out of my phone and noticed that I was then able to properly disable "Use only 2G networks". So, I ordered a new AT&T SIM online, called and had it activated, and now 3G and H are working properly again. And along the way I fell in love with CyanogenMod.
I expect I'll probably have to repeat this process every few months if they continue to slap down my SIM cards, but I consider it worth it for not having to pay for a voice/text plan. I am still on contract, but to anyone who is considering doing something like me, T-mobile recently started offering a $30 a month plan that gets you 5 GB of data, 100 minutes, and unlimited text, and it's for phones! The only hitch is that it's a month by month thing (no contract) and it's promotional, so who knows when they'll decide to cut it. But personally, I'm hoping it's a sign that carriers are finally moving in the right direction.

I setup a google voice enabled PBX with pbxes.org, back when they let you make them for free. I know for a while they stopped doing that; not sure what the current policy is.
Basically the pbx pretends to be a google talk client, so when someone calls my google voice number it goes to the pbx. Then I have an extension on the pbx that I register on my phone with the native android SIP client, which on CM7 works like a dream. Seriously far smoother and more reliable than sipdroid or csipsimple.
Oh and this does work for outgoing too, but if you're using a solution that doesn't (like google voice -> sipgate/ipkall -> pbxes.org), you can get around it with an app called Google Voice Callback. And it's still all free.

In 2.3 they added SIP calling to the android OS. It's not an app. Of course, in stock android it only works on wifi. Cyanogen unlocks its true potential by letting you use it on cellular too.
In my experience, on stock ROM SIP is an epic fail, both native and via apps (tried acrobits, sipdroid, csipsimple, sipagent). There is something funny about moto's audio routing stack, its not a network or settings issue.
Same settings and SIP providers - yes I tried two lol - , same apps, same network i.e. home Wifi, 100% perfect with nexus one. So I'm sure its Atrix specific. This happened on both stock 2.2 and 2.3 AT&T.
Custom ROM fixes this, CM7 native SIP works perfectly.
Can't remember for other ROMs, but they seemed to get apps working if not native SIP.
YMMV

Except it would if you were using a CDMA carrier. I know it said LTE on the Screenshot but if the Fallback is CDMA then it needs to disable the Data function to insure calls can be sent and received. GSM/WCDMA it doesn't apply. I think it is just turned on all phones by default just to make sure.

Not so sure about that as like I said I have never seen this and I have to use 911 at least a few times a month.
It does make sense for several reasons. I actually work in emergency services. It puts your phone into an enhanced 911 mode where 911 dispatchers can GPS locate you. They also disable data because remember when you couldn't have data and voice at the same time? This is to ensure they can call you back. Google it if you don't believe me.

It's never been an issue for GSM users, just CDMA. So people who never had Verizon/Sprint have probably never had that issue. No idea about the notification, I've not had to use 911 for a long while now. It does make sense to have that mode though, just to be on the safe side. And if it also allows 911 dispatchers to access your GPS location, it's good that it shows the notification. I don't mind them being able to, but I like to know that it's happening. 5 minutes without data is a small price to pay for that.

Ok that could make since. It would also explain whyt I dont see it as I disable just about everything dealing with emergency broadcasts and anything that requires gps needs a pin code to activate. So they couldnt lock on to it if they wanted to.
Now while this may come in handy in the states it is completely useless elswhere.
Come to think about it. Could also be the custom AOSP based rom that I run that has most of that removed.

I cant have data and voice at the same time true... But if I stream a youtube video is does not stop calls from coming in, even though answering the call does stop the video stream.
Sounds like they are covering the worst case scenario. You could be roaming on a cdma carrier even though your carrier is gsm. If you are on Project FI you could be on either at any given time plus they want to make sure they get a accurate gps location in case you phone in a bomb threat or something.
BLUF:
If your Verizon account does NOT have HD Voice enabled and the essential phone has "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" enabled (which is a default setting) you may not be able to make/receive phone calls.
I had an older phone running a lineage fork that did NOT support HD Voice. For whatever reason that also means it isn't enabled on my Verizon account. It doesn't cost anything extra and isn't plan specific but until you enable on a phone (says VZW Tech) the setting stays off.
When I put my SIM into the new Essential phone I could make calls but it would NOT find a new tower. IF i was driving any distance I had to reboot the phone completely to get data or make calls.
As of a few days ago my data was always working (LTE+) but suddenly I could not make or receive any calls. Again, texting, internet, etc. was fine. (yes wifi was off to test this =)
I was on with VZW support trying to fix this when my essential trouble ticket was answered with:
Given that you are getting the LTE+ icon already, can you try this step and see if it helps:
Go to Settings -> More -> Cellular Networks
Disable "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode"
Make a phone call
Return to the Settings menu and re-enable Enhanced 4G LTE Mode

VZW said give it a try lets see. With it "off" I could suddenly make calls. With it back on I couldn't again.
VZW said I bet that's what we call "HD Voice" and I see its not enabled on your phone. He enabled it. I rebooted. Everything works again with that setting on or off.
I emailed this back to essential just to let them know what I did with VZW and got reply:
My understanding was "HD voice" was enabled on all smartphone accounts with Verizon, but I will add that as a step to check in the future.

I've been troubleshooting this with VZW and Essential for a while so very happy to find fix. I also went out and got a brand new SIM but that also didn't help. Both new and old sim worked in old phone fine but in essential no luck.
I had at first though unlocking bootloader / rooting had done something . I wiped and reflashed this thing 4 times yesterday trying different things to no avail.
I know some other Verizon uses were having weird issues so wanted to share.
I'll prolly never get so lucky with tech support synergy again in my life... but at least this one time they were quickly helpful.

Before I updated via OTA to 8.1 the Essential was connecting to LTE without issue. Since 8,1 I have to connect to CDMA and 3g in order to user my Dialer, otherwise Server Error is generated. No calls in or out.
I wanted to downgrade Yes rebooted, factory reset, etc.
I searched google up and down with no real answers that work. How do I get Sideload working again? It has to be a simple configuration or driver problem I will assume.
Thanks

I wrote that post that he referred you to, and while it worked in Oreo 8.0 it does not seem to work in 8.1 for me either.
Try this:
dial *228 and get a PRL update
reboot
*#*#4636#*#* (it may take a few seconds for it to come up if you do it right after a reboot)
set it to LTE/WCDMA
reboot
(you may have to check in mobile network settings that your APN is set to VZWINTERNET)
Let me know how it works out for you. I know that Verizon doesnt support WCDMA, but it forces you over to the Verizon LTE bands which is more or less the goal of this. For some reason this functions differently than any of the other settings that include LTE in them (believe me, I've tried them).

Yep those are how the menu should look for a device that's not locked to sprint. It seems to me there are some firmware files that prefer sprint in these beta builds, because even on other carriers (and more than one person has said this) you can see 'sprint' pop up in the bar or in the settings even when you arent on sprint.
Interesting that yours gives you the option of 'wifi calling provisioned', I cant get that to not be greyed out on mine.

Yeah I've screwed with this phone so much I don't know what I did LOL but now it shows wifi calling even in dialer. I'm not sure if it really works cuz I have a good signal so it never switches. I did get a new SIM card on Monday as well because I was fighting with the vzw crap so I don't know exactly what triggered the WiFi calling.

That's where I'm at too... the one thing that might be different about this is I tried my old steps first before figuring out how to get it to work with these new ones... seems like a lot of effort, but it might be what is needed (or some amount of it) to get it all working. So try going through the old ones before the new ones (you probably dont need to *228 again since you just did)
My old steps linked here (these worked in 8.0, if they work for you in 8.1, more power to you, but they dont work for me):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74920423&postcount=506
I'm still routinely messing with it because I feel like the setting I have now prevents me from falling back to CDMA if LTE is unavailable for some reason. Fortunately that is a rarity for me... but I maintain that Essential has something in the ROM itself that is preferring sprint and I think it's screwing with us using Verizon.

Try turning off Enchanted 4G LTE Mode. It's possible going to 8.1 just reset this setting to on. This should only be on if you have HD Voice enabled on your line on Verizon (you'll have to call Verizon to enable it, it's a free feature).
This should fix server error on 4G, randomly connecting to Sprint is a separate issue.

Took the advice from someone on Reddit who had the same problem. Ran to VZW store and received a new SIM. Without any programming on my end or reboot, back to LTE without issue. FINALLY. As soon as the rep popped in the SIM the essential connected on its own.

Just wanted to second this post that a new sim card is the key to solving this issue. In my case, I was using Red Pocket CDMA (VZW network), and I ran into the same problem. Red Pocket rep explained to me that my sim got provisioned to 3g only and that I needed a new sim to connect to LTE. As soon as we switched to a new sim, I got LTE. I hope this helps others.
Using the phones on Sprint.
Since three weeks or so, while on LTE, the incoming voice calls are going directly to voice mail.
Sprint looked at it and changed the Network to 3G and now getting a ring for the incoming calls.
Basically, I am forced to run the phones on 3G service.
Need to go to a service center (which is very far for me) to have the phone looked at.
Anyone facing similar issue?
PS: 2 of the 3 PH-1 phones I have, are having the issue.

Google have updated the dialer recently several times, could it be a bug that shows on Sprint, or do you have spam settings on, which I know has caught other people out. Check/play with spam settings in her dialer app.
(other areas I might check (if not dialer or network). I assume all phones were working before correctly, right? Are they different sims or the same sim in different phones? New sims, ie not old one you have cut down hat are old spec. Do lte settings match on different phones?)

Same issue. Did you get it fixed?
I also have this problem on Sprint.
Sometimes restarting the phone fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't.
Between this and no longer being able to use Google Voice without using a separate number, I think it's time for me to bail on Sprint.
My wife had this issue a bit back. Only happened when the phone was using VoLTE (verified by a debug menu, *#*#4636#*#*, showing both voice/text and data marked as LTE).
Fix was to disable the Enhanced 4G LTE communications option, which forced the phone too fallback to nonVoLTE while still using LTE for data. Again confirmed using the phone information menu which showed voice as 1xRTT and data as LTE.
Hope this help and that we can get a better fix soon.

I love sharing my time with ungrateful idiots that can't bother to read or need the red carpet rolled out for them...
Good luck with your device... Hope you drop it in the river

Didn't work for me either but I figured it out... what I had to do is change a setting under Google Voice in Settings under the tab CALLS change to "Use carrier only" and I did have to turn VoLTE off. I left the Preferred network type as LTE. Phone is working well now, with T-mobile and Google Voice I have been testing it all morning.
