Root or systemless root? Depends on your needs.... - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So now that we have had time to play around with rooting and a couple of ROMS(thanks devs), Ive come to the conclusion(like many others Im sure) that which root you choose affects your ability to use one thing: Android Pay.
I was hoping to have AP working after root, as its a new "thing" and Im seeing it gain traction here in the North East. It does work on systemless, and thats awesome! It doesnt on a "normal" root install. But of course, I want to have all the modifications I can with my new toy as well. Being on VZW- its not too often that I can have a true unlocked phone to tweak as I please. Once Xposed was installed, it broke AP like using root normally for me.
So there is my dilemma for now- Im sticking with Xposed for the time being with systemless. Even though I was enjoying the Vanilla-ness of the Pure, I like to tweak the settings. And lets face it, Moto left a few things out. I Loved it on Samsung(Wanam) and I have found that there sure is a lot of stuff for the Pure/Stock as well. Gravity Box is great. So cool to ad the clear all button to the recent apps, along with having a different lock screen wallpaper vs Home page.
I'm guessing most here, especially are more for Xposed than AP! Any others have comparisons for the 2 different roots? Why do you use the one you use?

Benefits of rooting the Nexus 7?

I searched and did not really find an answer to this, so here it goes - why would someone root the Nexus 7 (I have a 2012 32 GB WiFi)? I figure it's already bone stock, why would you want to root it? Are there any perks to doing so? I just rooted my phone successfully so now I've kind of been bitten by the bug haha.
Thanks in advance!
As for me, I think what drives me to root my N7 is the ability to customize it.
If I have a rooted tablet or phone, then I am able to install Xposed Framework and tons of modules.
For instance, the battery bar on top of the screen, since I can't find the battery indicator inside the default settings.
And a lot more, the eyeful transition animations, the colorful status bars while different apps are running, and so on.
Aside from customizing my N7, I also want it to perform well without being occupied by some active apps.
Hence I install Greenify, which helps me manage my apps and improve(?) my battery life though it already has a quite decent battery drain.
And of course, it is required to have root access, too.
Just share my some thoughts with you.

Who's going to miss using Xposed on Lollipop?

Are you waiting out on updating for next weeks Tmobile update? At this current moment, w/ Xposed 3.0 Alpha3, we still don't know if we will ever get support (as the dev said). I currently have the phone setup pretty much dependent on Xposed. Not sure how I will setup the phone again without some of the stuff Xposed has to offer.
List of modules:
Complete Action Plus - Used because Samsung's Complete Action feature is a bit gimmickly and this one allows you to properly setup which apps you want by default.
GravityBox - This is used because I want to change/remap my "recent key" to "menu" instead.
Greenify - no need to explain
Network Speed Indicator is perfect for the Notification Box. Yes this can be replaced.
PerAppFonts - Used to change the apps in my chat app... No replacement w/out Xposed
Samsung Camera Fix - Now I can launch Quickpic directly from Camera App
Screen Filter - Used with tasker to kill bluescreen that hurts your eyes
Secure Setting - Paired w/ Tasker since it can control GPS, Radios, Power Saving, and etc
Wanam - too many functions here
XHangouts - To edit Hangout settings
Youtube Adaway - blocks youtube ads
YourTube - Used for automatically selecting 4k stream and changing display menu at launch of Youtube App
God I wish this list wasn't so long that I became dependent.
Nope. I bought the device because I liked it. Not because I liked it and it could run xposed.

I've been using this phone since launch. What i'm trying to say is... will you be holding out on the Lollipop update because Xposed isn't supported..
Dont think anyone will miss it really. You can always go back to kitkat and use xpose so it is not really a thing to "miss"
That is the joy of choices...new update because it got pretty colors and new lockscreen/notification settings? or stay with the old that does EVERYTHING you require from it?

You have to remember...we have several developers who are not lazy to actually modify the roms...check out some of the few lollipop roms laying to see what i mean if you haven't already ...granted, they do not do any of what you listed LMAO!

No need to hold out. Xposed is a luxury to me.

I've already tried one and flashed back to kitkat.
I'm trying to see if there's replacements to kill off that xposed list.
Not me. Never used it and don't think I ever will
BAD ASS NOTE 4
Actually most of those mods have been manually added into some Lollipop Roms already. So no I won't miss xposed. It's better to have it as a built in for stability purposes

One thing that I use is Greenify GCM push. Seems like you can't use GCM push when Xposed doesn't work.
The only thing I really care about is YouTube adaway and mw manager. I hate youtube ads, and I love that I can shrink any app by sliding from the corner.

without Xprivacy, the android ecosystem is useless to me personally.
without the ability to keep my data, MY data, I would rather go get a iphone.
I do wish another option was available, a ton of usable mods are being hampered due to one add on (albeit a major one)
certainly not complaining since I can't code, Ill just stick with 4.4.4 and wait.
What about if you update and install dual Boot and run cm12 in the second ROM with xposed and that's it!!

Thanks buddy, very good to know Regarding stability, no question that your statement is fact. Shines some bright light on this news, posted by @rovo89 today along with news of a new LP alpha...
Regarding Samsung ROMs: No progress. No ETA. No promise that it will be supported, although I don't exclude it either. It's simply unclear what further differences between their and AOSP's ART variant come up.

I will personally miss the ability to use Xposed mainly due to the vast amount of customization options that it offers to users. While it is certainly preferable that various mods are baked into ROMs, there are some incredibly powerful modules that either can't or are highly unlikely to be included in any custom ROMs. I decided to go through the modules that I'm using and (attempt) to evaluate the likelihood/possibility that their effects could/would be included in a custom ROM (or replicated by non-xposed dependent apps). Here's my take, would love to hear the thoughts of others :good:
Amplify: Surely. Most ROMs improve battery life vs. stock anyway. Wakelocks/services/alarms can be "tamed" by other means.
CPU Freq in Statusbar: Maybe not in the statusbar, but Dynamic (Kat at least, have yet to try Pop) has it as well as the CPU gov in the notification panel. Better than "good enough"
Coolify: A newer module that I don't think many people are aware of... but absolutely should be! Giving it a look in the Play store will give you a better idea of what it does than a brief description. Really a fantastic app/module... frequently updated and each new version works better than the last! I also like that it shows the battery temp in the status bar. If I were crazy greedy, would prefer that it showed CPU core 0 temp, but I'm not, so happy to keep an eye on the battery I doubt that the full effect would be implemented in a ROM, but I'd think that it could be to some degree.
Greenify: Similar effect built into a ROM? Sounds like a TON of work... will be missed.
No lock home: Was very happy to learn that this is built into LP itself... good call!
PlayPermissionsXposed: A module I consider quite important but wouldn't expect to see it in a ROM. AppOps (already baked into ROMs) is far more useful though anyway.
UnbelovedHosts (paid version): Similar to AdAway, and KILLER as an addition to it. It's very rare that I see an ad of any kind on my phone. The unlock key allows to blocked hosts lists to be auto-updated. Will be missed.
Unicon: Purely cosmetic but I love this module. IMO it's the ultimate "UI consistency" tool. Along with my icon pack of choice (Velur, hands down) my (Nova Prime backed) UI looks... appealing Too "specialized" to be baked into a ROM I would imagine. Will really miss this one.
Xposed Additions (pro): Please tell me that there are LP ROMS that enable key remapping... PLEASE! (Can't handle menu key = recents. It's WRONG I tells ya! WRONG!!!)
XuiMod: Another strictly cosmetic effect, but SO SWEET! Allows you to use animations from various ROMs, so.... yeah.
Huge thanks @VeNuMuS for allowing me to view to inability to use Xposed in a different light. LP, here I come :good:
@jazzmachine
Not having Greenify paid options is going to suck bad. Especially GCM push
If you guys miss Screen Filter you could always download Twighlight from the play store
I do not plan on moving off my current setup until/if Xposed is fully up & functional with TouchWiz & Lollipop.
Unless T-Mobile is making Lollipop make my phone have secks w/ me... Nope, nah ah. Can't live without Xposed! :silly:
Don't use exposed. Don't see the value. Never have, never will

Found out how to change this..
You can use Root Explorer:
Make sure you grant root and Mount R/W
Then go to /system/usr/keylayout
Modify file Generic.kl
Look for "Key 254"
Change it to Menu, Save, exit, and reboot.
Now I need to figure out how to change double press home to launch recent apps.

What are the benefits of rooting this device?

It's already stock.
Awesome Root only apps, Ad blocking, Being able to tweak your device for countless reasons including performance improvements, battery improvements and many others, Can flash sick custom ROMs with features that stock does not offer, Volte, Band 12( T-Mobile), Cyanogen Mod, Layers Manager( Sick theming app that's ROOT only)
Prob forgetting some things...
You could have just googled this and saved yourself some time but I was happy to help.

The benefits of rooting is universal with practically every phone. You get much deeper control of your device. You can install a custom rom to get extra features and potential performance increases. You can tweak the kernel to underclock (to save battery life) or overclock (to get more performance). Xposed modules, such as Gravitybox, can get you custom rom features on a stock based rom (such as TruPureX). You can block ads. Titanium Backup is a legendary root app for backups. There are plenty of other root apps to get the most out of the power of root. You can maximize the phone's potential by rooting, however, if you don't find these things particularly compelling for you to go through the whole process of rooting and flashing roms (which isn't too complicated), the stock rom will do you just fine.
The reasons to root all depend on you. If you just want a phone without carrier bloat, then rooting your phone is not necessary since this phone is already there. Otherwise, rooting gives you the ability to do many tweaks and customizations to your phone that is not otherwise possible. Read up on it and decide if it something worth your while

My main reasons are for Titanium Backup, Emoji Switcher, Better Battery Stats, & Sixaxis Pair Tool.
AdAway!
When you look at the pros (other replies above) and cons (have to unlock bootloader, so you void your warranty), I'm no longer convinced there is a great deal of benefit in rooting the phone.
In the last 5 years this is my 4th android phone and it's the 1st one I haven't bothered to root.
I look at the custom ROM threads and they're full of "this or that doesn't work"
I've used Apex to customise the UI (no root required for most things). The only thing I'd like is to have time/date shown in the middle of the status bar - but I'm not loosing my warranty just to get it!
I should say I'm a very "light" user of the phone - so stock Android gives me everything I need, and I'm not finding battery life an issue.
^^ This. Apex launcher, custom kernel for color and slight performance tweaks, center clock, and skipping tracks with the volume rocker all on stock rom. Thats all I really root for.

I'm sure this analogy has been used somewhere before.
If you're the type that likes to tinker, unlocked bootloader gives you [mostly] full access.
It's like going target practice and shooting with blanks or real bullets
I have decided not to root for now. With previous Android phones, my primary reasons to root was to remove and/or disable carrier bloat and freeze some manufacturer baked in functions I never used. In addition I could get a way to turn off LTE which AT&T is notorious for removing the capability. With this phone it is not an issue and the few things moto has baked in I actually find useful. I was able to block ads in the browser through ad blocker plus. Other than a few minor things that I miss I'm largely enjoying this phone. I don't find rooting necessary for me at this point. After my warranty I will probably give it a go.
One reason for me and its to turn off ascending ring tone as its affecting my notifications.

Worth rooting and using custom ROMs?

Hi,
My warranty is running out so I'm on the fence: look for a new phone or go the rooting and custom ROM path and continue using Note 4.
So as we have now MM and some updated apps, air command and other stuff is updated.. so what additional benefits custom ROM could give?
Speed? I do some gaming and can't complain that Note 4 is slow. It's really fast.
Disable more apps? That would be a benefit coz now not all apps can be disabled.
Remove quick connect buttons?
What else am I missing?
Launcher tweaks? But we use Nova. You don't need root for Nova
What else?
Thanks!!!
I'm using stock MM 6.0.1 (DPB1) and it's great. Still a fantastic phone for 2016 and really fast. I only root for Titanium Backup to freeze all the crap and to boost the headphone output level.
Only wish is for universal DPI adjustment as I can't be arsed messing about with xposed framework and the like but it's not a biggie.
You can root without installing a custom ROM and it takes literally 2 minutes.
What exactly do you freeze which cannot be disabled in Application Manager? And what benefits those freezed app give?
Will Greenify give any noticable battery life? As I understood Greenify needs root as well.
Here's a list of my disabled apps.
https://imgur.com/a/X0Zjv
What you freezed with tibackup?
For me the main reason for rooting is to be able to get the huge games I have downloaded over the years to all fit onto my ext SD card. I also enjoy the ability to use apps like Cerberus,, Greenify and SD Maid.... etc. to their absolute full potential.
I root phones because I want things the way I want them. For example I don't like the quick connect logos when I lower the screen to see any alerts. I also don't like how the phone warns me that the volume is getting loud. As if I don't know how.loud the phone is. Little thing like that drive me crazy. I root the phone so I can deal with those little announces like that.
If you have to ask whether its worth rooting or not, then I am not sure you are in the right place man. Said it plenty times before, saying it again, I don't really see the point of using Android without rooting, unless you need that KNOX thingy. Why? I can't even start to mention. Take AdAway for example, and that's the first step only of a journey of countless steps.
Custom ROMs on the other hand? If you see a really good dev, then yes, like Arya, or Omega etc., otherwise no comments.

So if one isn't rooting, then one might as well use...what, an iOS device? That doesn't make sense to me. There are plenty of compelling reasons to use Android over alternate mobile OS'es, even if one is using unrooted Android. Even if one is using unrooted, unmodified, BAD skinned Android.
What exactly do you freeze which cannot be disabled in Application Manager? And what benefits those freezed app give?
I have 96 apps frozen. Mostly pre-installed crap and many system apps including all the wireless/remote/sharing stuff I don't need. You need to choose what's important to you but it makes a massive difference to battery life.
If you don't know what is rooting for, you should forget about it.

I know what rooting is and I've used it in my previous phones (Nexus mainly) for many many things.
Why? Because Nexus didn't have all the features I needed.
And now Note 4 has battery optimization feature (so no need for Greenify), all those notification buttons, quick buttons, side buttons you name it (no custom rom is needed), basic backup function works to Samsung cloud (it partially covers tibackup) etc etc.
Well.. AdAway is a different thing.

Mi A1 Moddability in general and Oreo vs. Nougat?

Hey guys,
up till today I'm still using a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with Android 4.3.
It is modded to the max to exactly meet my needs and "paranoia":
- Custom Rom TouchWiz based rom
- Custom Kernel with some special script based tweaks (for example: MAC randomization everytime I turn Wifi on - handy for time limited free access points and to prevent beeing tracked etc.)
- Full Disk Encryption with a password different than my unlock pin (so when the device is off it requires a long password, but when on only a shorter pin)
- Xposed with the "old" Xprivacy Pro, Greenify and lots of other useful modules (like device shutdown after x failed amounts of unlock password etc)
- Lightning Launcher (allows "pinned" widgets that do not scroll - like the clock always beeing shown on top of all my homescreens) and custom widgets made with UCCW
- Button mods (double tap menu button turns on/off auto rotation, long menu switches last two apps, long back kills foreground app etc.) and homebutton mod to turn on flashlight when held while device is locked (to turn it on blindly / without looking)
- Sidebar Launcher Appsi for all my apps (and using xprivacy to prevent certain apps from showing up in the list at all)
... etc etc.
It took me a long time to set up everything and whenever I bought a new phone I sold it soon after because they never could be modded that hard like my old note 3 could be. (not to mention the built in batteries - I HATE that so much about all new devices).
Long story short: The Mi A1 could maaaaybe finally be the device to replace my Note 3 - but for that I need to be able to really mod it hard again hehe.
What really is important to me is beeing able to use xposed and xprivacy (unfortunately the xprivacy lua is not that good as the old one as far as it reads in the description), controlling the device encryption with my own 20+ Character Passphrase while still having a shorter pin when the device is booted up (and it beeing "full device encryption" not just file based if that still exists?). Removing all google apps except the playstore (and the account manager - dont even want the google play services crap) and preferably beeing able to install modded playstore which does not autoupdate itself etc.
-----
Do you guys think this is possible at all? And if so - should I stay with a 7.1.2 based rom or go for oreo? I mainly care about modability as I explained..
Hope someone is in the same boat or at least knows enough about this phone and the roms/kernels/availabe and working xposed mods to help me out.
There's pretty much no development for Nougat so it would be better if you were to get on oreo
Modabillity is pretty great with this phone so far
Look around on xda and see if you like it

but does xposed and stuff like modded playstore etc exist/work for oreo? and do you maybe know if its possible to have a different boot password than just the unlock pin when device is powered on?
and how about rootcloak and stuff like that? On my old note i can pretty much fake everything to apps and prevent root to be detected or feed them with fake data through xprivacy - but does this all still work to the same extend on the newer android versions? This safetynet bull**** has been around since when again? Can that still be fooled?

I'm not really sure about modded play store and boot password stuff but what I do know is that you can use Magisk (Similar to SuperSu + Extra useful mods) to hide root from certain apps that you choose
Xposed does work perfectly fine but it depends on the modules and whether they work on oreo. If not, magisk modules are also pretty good
If you happen to own a phone that you can flash Oreo on, (see, Lineage 15), then you can pretty much know and discover everything about Oreo and how modding works on it
