Are you waiting out on updating for next weeks Tmobile update? At this current moment, w/ Xposed 3.0 Alpha3, we still don't know if we will ever get support (as the dev said). I currently have the phone setup pretty much dependent on Xposed. Not sure how I will setup the phone again without some of the stuff Xposed has to offer.
List of modules:
Complete Action Plus - Used because Samsung's Complete Action feature is a bit gimmickly and this one allows you to properly setup which apps you want by default.
GravityBox - This is used because I want to change/remap my "recent key" to "menu" instead.
Greenify - no need to explain
Network Speed Indicator is perfect for the Notification Box. Yes this can be replaced.
PerAppFonts - Used to change the apps in my chat app... No replacement w/out Xposed
Samsung Camera Fix - Now I can launch Quickpic directly from Camera App
Screen Filter - Used with tasker to kill bluescreen that hurts your eyes
Secure Setting - Paired w/ Tasker since it can control GPS, Radios, Power Saving, and etc
Wanam - too many functions here
XHangouts - To edit Hangout settings
Youtube Adaway - blocks youtube ads
YourTube - Used for automatically selecting 4k stream and changing display menu at launch of Youtube App
God I wish this list wasn't so long that I became dependent.
Nope. I bought the device because I liked it. Not because I liked it and it could run xposed.

I've been using this phone since launch. What i'm trying to say is... will you be holding out on the Lollipop update because Xposed isn't supported..
Dont think anyone will miss it really. You can always go back to kitkat and use xpose so it is not really a thing to "miss"
That is the joy of choices...new update because it got pretty colors and new lockscreen/notification settings? or stay with the old that does EVERYTHING you require from it?

You have to remember...we have several developers who are not lazy to actually modify the roms...check out some of the few lollipop roms laying to see what i mean if you haven't already ...granted, they do not do any of what you listed LMAO!

No need to hold out. Xposed is a luxury to me.

I've already tried one and flashed back to kitkat.
I'm trying to see if there's replacements to kill off that xposed list.
Not me. Never used it and don't think I ever will
BAD ASS NOTE 4
Actually most of those mods have been manually added into some Lollipop Roms already. So no I won't miss xposed. It's better to have it as a built in for stability purposes

One thing that I use is Greenify GCM push. Seems like you can't use GCM push when Xposed doesn't work.
The only thing I really care about is YouTube adaway and mw manager. I hate youtube ads, and I love that I can shrink any app by sliding from the corner.

without Xprivacy, the android ecosystem is useless to me personally.
without the ability to keep my data, MY data, I would rather go get a iphone.
I do wish another option was available, a ton of usable mods are being hampered due to one add on (albeit a major one)
certainly not complaining since I can't code, Ill just stick with 4.4.4 and wait.
What about if you update and install dual Boot and run cm12 in the second ROM with xposed and that's it!!

Thanks buddy, very good to know Regarding stability, no question that your statement is fact. Shines some bright light on this news, posted by @rovo89 today along with news of a new LP alpha...
Regarding Samsung ROMs: No progress. No ETA. No promise that it will be supported, although I don't exclude it either. It's simply unclear what further differences between their and AOSP's ART variant come up.

I will personally miss the ability to use Xposed mainly due to the vast amount of customization options that it offers to users. While it is certainly preferable that various mods are baked into ROMs, there are some incredibly powerful modules that either can't or are highly unlikely to be included in any custom ROMs. I decided to go through the modules that I'm using and (attempt) to evaluate the likelihood/possibility that their effects could/would be included in a custom ROM (or replicated by non-xposed dependent apps). Here's my take, would love to hear the thoughts of others :good:
Amplify: Surely. Most ROMs improve battery life vs. stock anyway. Wakelocks/services/alarms can be "tamed" by other means.
CPU Freq in Statusbar: Maybe not in the statusbar, but Dynamic (Kat at least, have yet to try Pop) has it as well as the CPU gov in the notification panel. Better than "good enough"
Coolify: A newer module that I don't think many people are aware of... but absolutely should be! Giving it a look in the Play store will give you a better idea of what it does than a brief description. Really a fantastic app/module... frequently updated and each new version works better than the last! I also like that it shows the battery temp in the status bar. If I were crazy greedy, would prefer that it showed CPU core 0 temp, but I'm not, so happy to keep an eye on the battery I doubt that the full effect would be implemented in a ROM, but I'd think that it could be to some degree.
Greenify: Similar effect built into a ROM? Sounds like a TON of work... will be missed.
No lock home: Was very happy to learn that this is built into LP itself... good call!
PlayPermissionsXposed: A module I consider quite important but wouldn't expect to see it in a ROM. AppOps (already baked into ROMs) is far more useful though anyway.
UnbelovedHosts (paid version): Similar to AdAway, and KILLER as an addition to it. It's very rare that I see an ad of any kind on my phone. The unlock key allows to blocked hosts lists to be auto-updated. Will be missed.
Unicon: Purely cosmetic but I love this module. IMO it's the ultimate "UI consistency" tool. Along with my icon pack of choice (Velur, hands down) my (Nova Prime backed) UI looks... appealing Too "specialized" to be baked into a ROM I would imagine. Will really miss this one.
Xposed Additions (pro): Please tell me that there are LP ROMS that enable key remapping... PLEASE! (Can't handle menu key = recents. It's WRONG I tells ya! WRONG!!!)
XuiMod: Another strictly cosmetic effect, but SO SWEET! Allows you to use animations from various ROMs, so.... yeah.
Huge thanks @VeNuMuS for allowing me to view to inability to use Xposed in a different light. LP, here I come :good:
@jazzmachine
Not having Greenify paid options is going to suck bad. Especially GCM push
If you guys miss Screen Filter you could always download Twighlight from the play store
I do not plan on moving off my current setup until/if Xposed is fully up & functional with TouchWiz & Lollipop.
Unless T-Mobile is making Lollipop make my phone have secks w/ me... Nope, nah ah. Can't live without Xposed! :silly:

Found out how to change this..
You can use Root Explorer:
Make sure you grant root and Mount R/W
Then go to /system/usr/keylayout
Modify file Generic.kl
Look for "Key 254"
Change it to Menu, Save, exit, and reboot.
Now I need to figure out how to change double press home to launch recent apps.

Benefits are minimal if you are not a power user, or developer... The only real benefit I can think of is the WiFi teather.
Cons are things like voided warranty.
From the sounds of it, you need to do alot more research before you make the decision to root. Please use the search functionality on the forum.
Also, currently no root for the G2 that lasts past reboot.
I agree with above, I feel that the greatest thing gained from root access is the ability to enable Wifi (and Wired) tethering to other devices.
You can also:
Flash Custom Roms
Flash kernels to Overclock your CPU for better performance
Flash kernels to Undervolt your CPU for better battery life
There are also plenty of applications in the market that you can only use with Root Access. Just go to the Market and in the search bar type "Root" and you will see the different goodies that pop up.

Unfortunatly, it looks like none of these advanced options will be available to G2 uses fro some time as the phone rejects the root on reboot...
Rejects the root on reboot, Rejects the root on reboot, Rejects the root on reboot... Mmmmm, Geeky tounge twister!
The key word being 'some time'... could be an hour, could be until the next OTA, so we can watch exactly how it 'vets' the new update.
I'd say that being able to install/uninstall the default apps the phone comes with would be something anyone would find useful. Same with being able to access the system filestructure, to tuck away new ringtones in the default directory, so the music app won't pick them up. Or with wallpapers into the default Wallpaper section, instead of cluttering up your Gallery. Overclocking the CPU would mostly be for tweakers, going for high marks on Linpack.
Personally, I'd love an app that remapped a few of the keyboard keys (like those useless 'quick launch' buttons, and the hat-go-on-foot STUPID www/com button) to something actually *useful*.
Though yes, wifi/wired tethering would be the icing on the cake, for those who actually need/use it.
1. Flashing custom roms (CM6 is the real deal)
2. Adding tethering back (rarely use it but its a part of froyo)
3. Ability to change notification settings (needs better trackpad lighting)
Those are the 3 reasons I would love getting root, but as Google continues to update the app, getting root becomes less and less important. As far as the ringtones someone mentioned above, just download ringdroid. It makes ringtones, alarms, notifications, etc. without making it into the music.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Forgot about the notification light color options.. that'd be nice too.
And no, Ringdroid seems to leave them visible to the Music app, annoyingly enough.

For ringtones and notification sounds I just put them in /sdcard/ringtones and /sdcard/notifications and they do not seem to appear in the Music app, and are available to the respective spinners to configure without third party apps...

No permanent root as of yet with the G2. Only temporary that reverts back on reboot.
Hang tight.
I recently switched to art when my rom, liquidsmooth, released 4.4.4. I just wanted to give it a try for a few days just to see how things ran. Well soon after, I hear the next version of Android will do away with dalvik so I decided to make the switch permanent. My only struggle so far has been replacing the features xposed and the 15 modules i was using. I would like to know if there are others out there having similar struggles or if anyone has given thought to soon not having xposed.
Here's some of the things I've either been able to replace or haven't found an alternative :
* Using app launcher in gravity box assigned to a new softkey for quick access to dialer, sms, etc.
** replaced with sidecontrol
* greenify.
** tried it without xposed features, ended up with uucleaner. Not sure which I prefer
* disable location consent
** stuck dealing with it
* ad blocking (used a couple of modules)
** using adfree now. Not as happy. Seems to break a lot of sites/app functions. Maybe i just haven't gotten it completely configured right.
* being able to keep the navbar shown in full screen mode
** I'm no longer using fs mode. Would like to though.
Luckily my rom includes many of the features from xposed modules. A lot of rom devs have removed these from there roms with the thought that people could install them if they wanted via xposed. I wonder if the same thought process still applies. Maybe xposed will be enhanced to work with art, but what if it can't?
Crappalinks, it's awesome. Has anyone found an alternative? It disables the Tapatalk redirection in external links that seems to delay link handling as they get passed through Tapatalk's server first.
can't live without xposed, specifically gravity box. also, couldn't find a replacement for disabling the pesky location consent. hopefully, the devs will bring art support to xposed sooner than later.

Kravguy Is ART Runtime Significantly Faster than Dalvik ?
or is it just a minor speed boost in launching apps?
The developers of Xposed have already said that they will work on an ART compatible version once Android L is officially released.

For the most part, no. I've seen a bit of battery savings, but nothing significant. My main reason for switching was to prepare for the next version of Android. Flashing rom updates is a royal pain now cause it takes forever to optimize first boot. Hoping that will improve.

Agree, camera and sound are the 2 pieces of sense that aosp has never been able to match. With viper4android, I can get close with sound, but still not as good.

This is due to the nature of open source drivers versus the closed sourced ones HTC uses for the hardware. It will never match and the OEM ones will always be better

*MY BOEFFLA SAMSUNG ONDEMAND PROFILE ON POST 2!!!!
Prologue & Intent
I have used AOSP/CM based roms exclusively since owning Android handsets, there are many benefits to this, especially on handsets that manufacturers simply abandon and leave in a poor state, this is thankfully not the case on our trusty Galaxy S3!
However, one of the bugbears of being in the alpha/beta test world that is CM/AOSP etc, its the many teething bugs that can hamper your usage of the device and to make things more irritating, the S3 has plenty of hardware revisions and proprietary software that makes obtaining a truly perfect experience tricky for the developer and the user to achieve!
For these reasons, like me, you might have decided to return to Samsung stock rom or one of the the excellent refined versions of stock by the likes of @_Sale_ or @qaraqumus (NeatRom 4.3 & QS 4.4.2 N7100 Port).
When you return, you are greeted by missing features, but also greeted with excellent camera, depending on your view more polished stock applications that you can keep or get rid of according to taste. Of course, the main thing you will start to experience is STABILITY and its quite addictive!
So this guide is work in progress, I only returned to stock based roms 3 weeks ago, I really wanted a good stable camera and I was to be fair a bit bored of being a nightlie flashaholic! If you have useful information that can be verified as useful then please contribute and lets help others realise that stock is not a dirty word!
I find that all of the missing features from customs roms can be replicated and there is no reason to think that you will be de-featured by returning to stock, nor are any of these things laborious or complicated!
How to get the missing features back that you loved in custom roms!
So you have gone back to stock!
a) You are enjoying the stability and you probably love having the stock camera back! Oooh, perfect burst mode and video record pause! yum yum!
b) You are sad, you miss quick panels, you miss pie, you hate the annoying battery alerts and camera low functionality on low battery power!
These are the sort of things I felt I could not live without, so with help from my XDA friends, I have found answers to all the stuff I wanted back! If there is is something missing that you want back, ask on this thread and lets see if we can discover more together!
1) How to get back functionality like no low battery alerts, using your camera properly when on low power, browser exit, system tweaks, battery icon location and style, quick settings layout, sound behavior, long back kill, etc etc!
1. Install Xposed Framework, go here and follow instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/xposed-installer-versions-changelog-t2714053
2. Install the most excellent apps you will ever install on your custom rom, Wanam Xposed, now you can configure everything I mention and more! : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ma.wanam.xposed&hl=en_GB
3.. Optional install Gravity Box for Xposed, for enabling a few features not included in the more compatible Wanam! Such as full screen lockscreen widgets and some additional hardware key functionality! Be careful ensure that you mirror any similar settings between Wanam and Gravity Box to ensure you have not cross fighting! [/url]
4. Boot Manager - Highlights what apps boot with your phone and allows you to stop them doing so!
5. Flat Style Bar Indicators - Lets you pick some nice looking wifi/mobile indicators for your status bar
6) Recent App Cleaner - Cleans out my recent apps when I turn my screen off and allows you to select apps that you want to keep open as well
7) Xad - Works like Adaway, stopping adverts where it can, its better than adaway as well
8) Xposed Additions - Allow excellent re-mapping of your hardware buttons!
9) XuiMod - Only use this change the system transitions when opening and closing apps, really nice
10) YouTube Adaway - Removes ads and suggestion pop ups in YouTube
11) Start feeling really happy about returning to stock!
How to stop battery drain!
Ok, this is annoying, but it is easy to sort out! there are some basics to observe and then some extra things you can do as well! Everything can be done safely and be reversable so you may experiment freely! Of course, it's a great idea to do a nandroid backup in case you make a mess of things, but if you follow this guide you will be fine and happy!
i) Get Greenify from the Playstore, run it, follow the instructions and limit the apps from waking your device up! On 4.3 roms I find it very useful, however on 4.4.2 I find it a lot less useful, in fact I don't use it at all on QS and I find that xposed Recent App Cleaner performs a better job. However for 4.3 users, stuff like Facebook etc will wake your phone up until the cows come home, but do not greenify apps that you want to be able to deliver on demand messages, like Whatsapp etc, obvious? UPDATE - If you are Pro user then use the Hibernate and Lock Feature to ensure your phone goes to sleep nicely!!!https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify&hl=en_GB
ii) Instal betterybatterystats, follow the xda thread to understand more about what you are doing and you will soon know which naughty apps that are waking up your device! You can then install apps such as Titanium Backup and freeze those apps, so that they no longer run and no longer drain your battery. If you decide you want an app back, then unfreeze it! It is as safe as that! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en_GB
iii) Tryout Recent App Cleaner for ensuring apps a killed when your screen is off, seems to work better on QS/4.4.2 roms than greenify, read my post here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58086117&postcount=112
Alternatively use RootAppDelete, i prefer this app, you simply click on system app, choose junior mode (pro mode will delete the app, which is fine if you know for sure you want an app gone forever! or at least untill you next flash an update rom back to your device, disabling is the safer and easier option!) which will then only freeze the apps (just like titanium) and you then tap the offending app and allow it to disable it. If you want one back, then tap the disabled icon and tap the app you want to bring back to life! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=zsj.android.systemappremover&hl=en_GB
What system apps should I get rid of?
This depends on your usage and which revision of android/rom you are using, but for me all of the below were pointless battery draining ram using wastes of space or apps that have a better alternative that are more system resource friendly! If you are unsure, google search the name of the app and you will find results explaining what they were doing within the first page of results, i did!:
NOTE: Please make sure you research each app/service to ensure that your application will not be affected by freezing of any of the below, you can do this in google search or if you use Root App Delete you can press the info button to get an instant google search result!

Custom kernel sir?
Your stock kernel is good! Remember that!
The custom kernels are better if only if you have to have some of the features, like a desperate need to under or overclock your device, change led behavior and so fourth!
There are many to choose from and you will find them easily enough, I am sure you know of them! I use Boeffla and I have a stable gently overclocked profile you can get from my signature if you want an easy ride with great OC performance, stability and great battery results!
However, it's always best to stay on stock kernel whilst you make your system stable, once it is, then is the time to play with your kernel! I won't and nor will most other users want to help you if you don't follow that simple rule!

Just so you do know, when moving from Android revisions or even within the same android build number (i.e. 4.2.2 / 4.3 / 4.31 / 4.4.4 etc) IT IS IMPERATIVE that you Factory Wipe Data, Cache, Davlik and format System! Failure to do so can lead to odd performance or nasty bootloops! Thanks to @andrewwright for reminding me to remind you!
NOTES
I have not developed any of the apps or mods or guides that are linked to this guide, please pay respect to their respective authors and contributors directly on their forum threads.
I will endeavor to update this guide with new things I discover and learn from peoples contributions on this thread.
You always take responsibility for your device! The easy way to protect yourself is make a nandroid backup, back up your apps using titanium backup, freeze or disable your apps rather than uninstall them, don't do anything suggested on this thread unless you are either competent or willing to learn as you make mistakes!

When flashing roms:
To stop the likes of bootloop when swapping between aosp and custom tw sammy roms remember to format data and system in recovery FIRST then flash rom/gapps. factory reset isnt enough imo for a clean install. When returning with an odin flash if you have a bootloop go into recovery and "factory reset" and reboot the phone.
I see so many threads started about these bootloop problems when swapping between aosp and tw its a good idea to have this here imo.
Also for the total noobs out there...PIT FILES are a LAST resort! Dont mess with these till you understand what there for. If you still dont understand after reading about pit files....ASK SOMEONE. Dont just flash and hope for the best.
Great idea and a good guide.

I'll add a trouble shooting section and incorporate this, thanks for contributing!
I forgot that some people don't always know the mega basics!
And God, I hope people don't use pit files on this device! I made custom pit files for the s2, but that device needed them! I have threads for that work, but yes no need for people to play with that on our trusty phone!

I think gravitybox has more features than wanam. Like double tap notification bar to sleep.
probably you should include gravitybox modules. I'm using it. On archidroid.

Indeed, I use Gravity box also, I need a bit of both to get the system functionality I desire.
I will be updating the OP for Gravity box shortly, there are a few things to be cautious of according to some user reports, so I need to put a disclaimer to it. Cheers for contributing :good:

yeah. GB is not meant for samsung touchwhiz. wanam is designed for touchwhiz.
so far i dont have any issue.
the reason why i use GB is because
-double tap status bar to lock screen
-status bar icon can be changed to kitkat icons
-ram bar available for recents apps
if only wanam have these features then i would go for wanam.
currently having greenify and gravitybox in my xposed module.

It's very hard to differentiate between archi and neat, both as good as each other!
Mixing both modules no issues, but obviously make sure your settings between the two don't conflict otherwise you could have issues.

Give the profile a try and find out. I find ondemand the most balanced performing governor, offering both performance and battery saving potential. However, upon my using my v3 profile for s couple of days, I have chose to alter my setting of swappiness from 60 to 40 and have altered the zram down to 160mb. The balancing of the profile is getting close to perfect and I hope to release a final version by next weekend!
Let me know how you get on if you choose to try

I followed all the instructions and installed CWM recovery, and then installed su and now I have root. It was pretty easy. There is some loss of quality of the camera but I can live with it for now.
What are the suggested modifications now? The main thing I would like to do is purge all the stupid spyware / adware apps on this. What is recommended?
I am hoping there will soon be a CM install for this so I can truly get rid of all the Sony junkware.
Not sure but can you keep us posted on your battery life after installing a custom rom, curious to know if the stock rom has some special battery efficiencies.

I'll tell you what I did:
uninstall all sony bloatware, expecially that antivirus app...
install xposed framework
install titanium backup
Now I'm just waiting for CM or whatever rom
Do you have a list of package names I should nuke? I can't quite match up all the package names with the evilware.
I'm looking at the crazy permissions some of these apps have. Weather Widget can read my call log! wtf!
Thanks
Well, you sure don't want to take a bunch of low-light pictures....
Xposed Modules
There should be am exposed module who can do this for you, it should be called set permissions or something like that... I personally deleted everything from Sony, I use 3rd party apps for weather, calendar and so on... But this is personal taste I just prefer to use the phone for its hardware, not for the Sony brand
Install gesture control and permanently disable the nav bar. That's what I would do gestures are the best way to control a touch device IMHO.
Install Greenify to enhance your battery life. Install Adaway to get rid of ads system wide. Use Tasker to automatically enable/disable pattern unlock based on your location (ie home or not) and also automate the phone putting itself in flight mode when you charge at night.

I can't wait to install Xposed framework. I can't live without "vibrate on answer", long press tile to go to setting, camera shutter mute, Wanam's Youtube ad-remover, and most importantly GEM Xperia module to hide unwanted apps. Some root apps like Titanium backup, Samba droid, SSH droid, Greenify etc. Fingers crossed for a root exploit.
If you do not really know what to do with root, then I'd really question whether damaging your device is worth it.
This phone is super powerful and the "bloatware" doesn't affect performance - certainly from my user perspective. Just use apex or nova and hide the apps you don't want to see.
TBH, as much as I love tinkering around with my phones, the need for root (as opposed to it being nice to have it) is diminishing as android develops.
Will root for titanium but not much. sony has the battery management that can compare with greenify.

My big thing is I want all the spyware to be gone, and I basically do not trust any carrier / manufacturer builds.
Btw the camera is very good, even post-rooting. And battery life is really amazing. I ordered the magnetic charger, and I can probably wait to charge my phone until the new charger arrives. It seems like this phone could go for several days pretty easily. I'm impressed.
ROUNDUP OF NON-ROOT MODS/APPS/SOLUTIONS
APPS
1. iFont
It uses the native Flipfont system present in the Note to change fonts. You can install any font from a very big list and if you buy the Donate version (which I highly recommend), you can make an installable apk for any font you want. I have already made and shared Roboto L fonts, Comic Sans and Comic Neue.
2. Adblock Plus
Works on WiFi and (if APN settings are edited) on mobile data, blocks apps on browsers and other apps. An excellent solution for ad-blocking on non-routed phones.
2b. An alternative solution that only works for browsing via WiFi networks is Adguard.
3. SMS Backup & Restore
A free app that can backup and restore your messages, no root required. Works flawlessly, I used to it to backup my SMS on my S4 and restore them to my Note 4.
4. Greenify
As mentioned in this thread, Greenify works without root as well. Automatic hibernation is even an option, albeit some issues with "talking calculator" have been mentioned.
5. My Backup
As mentioned here this app is a feature-rich backup solution for non-rooted phones.
6. SD Maid - System Cleaning Tool
This app attempts to make best possible use of its features without root present. It's a tool that cleans up unnecessary files from your phone that apps leave behind.
7. AutoStart - No root
As the name suggests, this app lets you select which applications you want to auto start after phone boot-up and it works on all phones/tablets without root permission. You can also choose one or multiple apps to auto-launch at boot with customisable delay values.
8. Busybox (No Root)
For advanced users who want to run busybox commands on their phones via the Android Terminal Emulator app.
9. Call Recorder
Call recording app that uses the Samsung standard API therefore does not require root access. It is a bit pricey but well worth the money for people who need that feature. There's a full-featured trial available from XDA so you can try before you buy.
9b. There is also a free alternative that has been reported to work well on the Note 4, AndroRec Free.
9c. Another great free alternative is Automatic Call Recorder, with the added bonus that it can record in better formats, like mp3 or wav, save on the SD card and the option for prompt to "Save or Delete" at the end of every call.
10. NoRoot Firewall
Firewall without root. Host name/domain name filtering, simple interface, fine-grained access control and no suspicious permissions on the app itself.
11. Better Wifi On/Off
A free, fully featured, ad-supported app that aims at giving you the control of the Wifi state, optimizing your battery life without losing on user experience. In theory, Wifi is less power hungry than 3G but some apps behave differently when Wifi is on (DropBox / Google+ uploads, Google Maps location caching) and the well known wlan_rx kernel wakelock is a symptom of wakeups caused by uncontrolled Wifi hotspots. The Wifi sleep policy is not working consistently and does not solve all the above problems, enter this app.
12. Helium - App Sync and Backup
Helium is the missing app sync and backup solution for Android and doe not require root. You can backup both your apps and their data to your SD card or cloud storage and sync them from your other Android devices. You need access to a computer for a brief USB connection and then you're good to go.
13. Desktop VisualizeR
Application that allows you to personalize your home screen by creating icons or widgets with your favorite photos or images, works on any launcher, even TW!
14. FREE screen recorder NO ROOT
Recordable is the easy way to create screen recordings without root. The free version adds a watermark on the recordings and limits frame rate to 8fps, but is otherwise fully functional. A Windows, Mac or Linux computer required to complete the installation (like with Helium Backup), but after this it's not needed to make screen recordings.
MODIFICATIONS
1. Full Screen Immersive Mode
Full screen immersive mode in any application or game, root is not required.
2.Enable AirView and AirGesture
2b. Instead of Nova Launcher, you can use the QuickShortcutMaker app to create any shortcut directly on the Touchwiz launcher.
3. MW-Pen App Enabler
This app that enables apps for multiwindow and/or pen window without rooted access. The only limitations are that it does not work for system apps and that enabled apps can not be updated. To update them, you need to uninstall the enabled app first, install the updated app and run it through the enabler app again.
4. Mont Blanc digital content
A guide on how to get the extra Mont blanc pens for the S Note and the two exclusive Mont Blanc wallpapers and unlock effect..
5. QuickClick
Start any action (flashlight, system toggles, media controls, etc) with a sequence of volume buttons clicks.
6. Spen Toolbox
A wonderful little app that extends the functionality of the S-Pen, by offering options for: turning the screen off when you attach the pen, changing the detach and attach sounds, creating a custom shortcut popup to appear on detach, and many more!
7. No root and want to modify your DPI? You can!
Thanks to PizzaSauce, we have a way to modify DPI without root. All you need is access to a Windows PC. Changes persist after reboot too.
If you don't want to install the whole Android SDK, you could use this tool to install ADB, which is all that is needed for this mod.
Hello all!
I recently got my Note 4 and it's by far the best device I've ever owned.
I started this thread because I decided not to root the phone -at least for now. Even though, I've been rooting and heavily modding all my phones in the past.
My reasons are:
1. Warranty.
I know that you can flash a stock firmware before handing it to service and that KNOX counter doesn't matter (I've had my Note 10.1 with a tripped counter repaired twice under warranty). However, I'd like for once to be able to just send my phone to service if need be, without the extra hassle of concealing the tweaking I've done.
2. S-Pen.
I know that rooting doesn't affect the S-Pen functionality, however, the use of the Pen makes custom ROMS such as AOSP and CM useless to me. I actually use the S-Pen heavily and it was one of the reasons I bought the phone. There are of course custom TW ROMS but to be honest, and with no intention to offend anyone, they are not my cup of tea.
3. Stability.
This one will seem weird to many, but it's my personal experience. This is the 4th Samsung device I own (SGS3, SGS4, Note 10.1, Note 4) and with the previous three I noticed that when I rooted and enthusiastically started "debloating", things started to turn unstable. And I have never, ever noticed any improvement in battery life. I know it sounds odd, but it is true to me. The Note 4 gives you the option to disable a lot of preinstalled apps anyway.
4. Lollipop.
I want to get the update that was meant for my region via OTA, no cables necessary. Plus I believe that all the annoyances I rectified with root (mainly theming, such as Tinted Statusbar) will be solved in Lollipop. Again, that's my opinion and personal taste.
Now do I miss root? Hell, yeah! Why?
1. ADS ADS ADS...
Ads everywhere! I have been paying for my apps and I am not using pirated software at all. And I gladly donate/pay for ads to be removed and premium features for apps I really love. However, there are apps that either don't offer an a ad-free option or they charge an insane amount for ad removal. I know developers need to make revenue, but there's nothing uglier than an ad banner. Seriously.
2. Tinted statusbar.
And generally Xposed.
3. Call recording.
I liked the native call recording function of the TW dialer, no app comes close from what I've seen.

I decided not to root as well. I'm using the note 4 as my backup phone with the oneplus one as my DD. I don't want to root until an option to root without tripping knox is available. I'm very curious to know what options are avaailable to non rooted phones. Thanks for starting this thread. Great idea.
3. Call recording.
I liked the native call recording function of the TW dialer, no app comes close from what I've seen.
Try this app, by an actual XDA dev, it works great. Its very polished, very native looking/behaving app.

Tested and working great without root.
My reason not to root note4 is lollipop upgrade from ota too
I think this note4 is good enough for me except ads like you said
For me I need root to
- Change the very bad Arabic font
- Use proxy applications
- Be able to stop WifiKill which they use heavily over here
- Use Wanam Xposed mostly for Long press back button to kill App
- Freeze all the useless pre-installed apps I never use eating memory and battery, I need maximum memory for multitasking
- Stop auto startup of other un needed apps
well I guess these may not be important to you

There is a way for non-rooted phones to block ads only on WiFi though on both WiFi and mobile data connections, using an app called Adblock Plus.

Hi guys,
It is my first post although I had been lurking for a while now. Interesting thread, I didn't root my Note 4 as well for all the reasons mentioned above. What I miss most is App Opps or XPrivacy. I find it hard to install all the applications I want to try because of the ridiculous amount of permissions required. Other than that I don't miss much. The phone is pretty awesome.
I was forced to root because I had app data on another device that couldn't be moved, even through ADB.
But, Xposed,Titanium Backup, Adaway , greenify and a few others make rooting well worth the risk (once you know your devices hardware is good ).

Have you tried installing Viper and see if it works? Because a quick Google search gave me these:
If you're using a Samsung device, you're lucky because you actually don't need root to install the Viper4Android! Only thing you need to do is to install the app as usual and change the sound effect in*settings > sound > music effect*to Viper4Android. Be sure you don't use the TouchWiz stock player because it may not work.

...And from the official XDA thread:
Setup your Device
For Samsung devices,
1. Try install V4A as user app instead of system app if the latter failed doesn't work.
2. Use Normal Mode and select V4A FX in Settings>Sound>Music Effects.
3. If don't work, use another player rather than Samsung stock Music.

Jumping on the band wagon here too... I've had many android devices, all rooted; most recently an S4 running CM. The reason I bought the Note was for the stylus and note taking abilities. Very happy with the speed and stability so far in stock form although the battery life sucks. Dropbox was a major drainer so killed that. I need to selective disable some of the other stock apps but so far not really missing much requiring root other than titanium backup...

Thanks for this lovely thread. Getting Adblock without root feels like an early Christmas. Would like to add that "My Backup" backs up SMS and much more without root. It also now backs up to Dropbox which is lovely (at least the Pro version does).
