I am getting bothered by the heat of my nexus 4 especially at the camera side..., when I play psx emulator it really gets hot and it gets hotter when it is charging... even if i am only watching or streaming the internet it gets noticeably hot, so i would like to know if this is ok or not.
what are apps that could monitor the temperature?
what is the normal temperature when gaming and idle?
I would like to know about this things so that if my unit is a lemon, i could return it to lg for the warranty.

you have a quad core device, its normal. when you stress the cpu, gaming, streaming, itll heat up. when you charge, your battery will heat up. the back o the phone is glass, so itll feel like it gets hot fast. when the device hits a certain cpu temperature, heat throttling kicks in. this will lower your cpu speed and cool down your device. when it goes over the cpu safety temperature(100C i believe), the cpu will shut down and the phone will power off. there are several apps that show the cpu and battery temperature. remember, battery temperature and cpu temperature are two completely different temperature readings.
System tuner gives you cpu temp. But you should get an app that tells you battery temp as well...

simms22 is right you can under clock it safely kernel tuner is free on play
Intel CPUs (i5, i7, etc.) can survive going over 100 degree Celsius, but the commonly quoted safe temperature limit for long term operation is 70 degree Celsius. I would assume that the same holds true for other silicon chips, and find it difficult to believe that the shut off temperature for the Nexus 4 is 100 degree Celsius - you will be getting serious burns on your fingers by then.

I download a battery temperature reader and a CPU temperature measurer. At Idle the batter temperature is at about 33-36 degrees Celsuis. And the CPU temperature at Idle is usually in the lower 40's at idle. Are these Temperatures to high?
Also When I plays games or use any apps for a just a few minutes the battery Temperatures get at around 40 degress C and the CPU temp is usually around the 45-50 area. Again Are these temperature to high?
I would really appreciate if anyone could give me useful help on this issue I'm having with my phone.

I'm assuming your Nexus 4 is a newer one (rev. 11). Nexus 4s have been known to run quite hot. My rev. 10 is at 42 C coming out of sleep without use, earlier when I played Need for Speed, it got to 60 C. It seems to be normal for mine, although it does get uncomfortably hot.

completely normal. right smack in the middle of the range of normal. remember, human body temperature average is 37C or 98.6F. when you use your device, the temp will go up when you use a cpu intensive game, the temperature will get even hotter. this all also depends on the surrounding air temperature. the warmer it is around, the warmer the device will get or idle.
Normal. Because the back is made of glass, it absorbs the heat and you feel it more than other phones.

Hmm, That seems weird, if the phone throttles you at 37 degrees shouldn't my phone not be idling at that temperature, and the my front screen seems to get warm after slight usage to. And looking on other forums people with a stock nexus 4 said that there phone idles around mid twenties, not the lower-mid thirties.

for hard working with QuadCore it s normal to get ~40 C quickly
But after 40C i think it s not normal and it s better to ask official service

look at the time they were posted. now its warmer eveeywhere. and again, human body temp is 37C. you have a quad core phone, it WILL get hot at times, that is normal. pushing the device, you might even see 70C or 75C.

Hmm okay I have pushed the phone and the highest CPU temp I reached was about 60ish. I'm not exactly worried about how hot it gets, it's just how fast it gets hot, it seems a little odd that just running facebook and twitter for a few minutes can get the battery temperature up to 40 degrees celsius.

That sounds similar to the results that I have found on the web, people said that to get there battery temperature up to 40 degress they have to push the phone, mine gets there just by opening a few apps.
If you want to cool it down and you are happy with messing about with your phone, try undervolting the CPU. Although I tend not to check the temperature, my phone (UVd by around -150) feels far cooler; playing Real Racing it doesn't get as warm as simple browsing would on stock.

I have heard of this, but I'm more focused on how the temperature should be on this phone untampered. Rooting and tweaking kind of scares me a bit.

Try faux kernel and undervolt t by -125 my friend using that combo and its mostly 25degrees.

40C is not hot. get that out of your head. idle temp will depend on the air temperature around you. yesterday was 91 in nyc, my phone was idling between 39-42C. stick your hand in 40C water, itll barely feel warm.

On a surface like metal it would, but not in water. That said, the back of the phone isn't water but I'm sure the temperature of the back of the phone is lower than the CPU

Couldn't agree more, The back of the phone I wouldn't say it HOT, but it is definitely very warm. But I'm not talking about how hot the phone feels. I'm trying to ask about the internal temperatures and if it's normal for it to heat up so fast.

again. this is normal. 104F would not feel more than slightly warm water.
the glass in the back of the phone is there to draw out the heat from the phone. its glass, and will feel warm. if you have problems with 40C, then i would recommend that you buy a dumb phone. my nexus 7, galaxy nexus, and nexus 4 all idle a bit warmer now than in winter. 40C is very normal.

Hello guys, well i've read every single post about the phone's working temperature on the forum but i just can't figure if my phone is working fine or not, because mostly everyone on the post refer to the temperature as "warm" "bit hot" etc, which is very subjective. I'm a bit worried because my phone (D806, running stock ROM) gets quite warm after like 20 mins of surfing the web through wifi, or after chatting a bit on whatsapp. By "a bit warm" i mean between 32-34 deg centigrade, refering to battery temperature of course. Now, after reading everything i can't figure out if this is a normal temp for this phone or not. I can also say that the min temperature i could measure (with just cell radio on, in idle state) was 25 degrees. The max temperature i could reach (running antutu for like 4 times one after another) was 45 degrees. Now, i'm confused because someone in a post said the max temperature he got was 34 degress, and his usual temp was 24 degrees. I couldn't even get 24 with the phone completely idle. So, i'd like to know your experience, since i can still exchange my phone for a new one if it's defective. Thanks in advance.

There is nothing wrong with your battery temp. You can also check you CPU temp (nope, maybe you will have scared )... Fortunately you didn't saw your CPU temp during your 4 Antutu runs...
The temperature (CPU or battery) depends of your room temperature and your current use. You said yourself with 4 Antutu runs the temperature increase, nothing abnormal even for the battery..., same thing after browsing for 20 minutes even in wifi.
A guy had 24°C battery temp in idle and 34°C max, well, what was the room temperature? Nothing running in background? What he was doing?
I mean even in idle, screen off, your phone can do a lot of things especially if you have a rogue app keeping the CPU busy so there could be a little more heat.
In any case there is a thermal protection (thermal throttling) to prevent damages in case of "overheating" for both CPU and battery the CPU freq decrease according to the temp. Even the screen brightness can be automatically lowered. In last case the phone shutdown if a high temperature is reached (about 100 °C for the CPU). The max battery temp should be about 50°C, I don't remember exactly.
Don't worry, as you reported there is nothing wrong with your tempetatures... Same thing if you take a look at your CPU temp, can be arround 70°C in heavy use, even a bit more in really heavy use.
We have a quadcore device running at 2.26 Ghz, all is enclosed without thermal cooling... it's normal to have "heat" with all the components.
Use your phone and profit, no need to monitoring each minutes your temperatures. You confused yourself by only reading the °C, not how or why it is compared to the other posts you read. Each user have different room temperature, use, settings, etc... you can't have the same temperature as xx user. An average yes, I agree and here you are in the good average...

Guys,thanks for your responses. I still don't get something tho because one of you said that my temp is normal (about 32 deg. while browsing), but then you say that anything over 30 deg should be avoided, then i don't quite understand. My phone gets between 30 and 35 deg while regular browsing, it's mostly a bit over 30 all the time i'm actually using it, SO, that's wrong or not? That's the part i don't quite understand.

Over 30°C for the battery temp is not dangerous at all, about 45°C also. Imagine people living in a really warm country when they use their phones...
Don't worry, already said, there is absolutely nothing abnormal with your temperatures, nothing... all is fine regarding your use...

I know there been a few threads on this issue, but none really tells me what the normal heat temperature is. I just got my Z5 a week and a few days now and noticed since using the phone that browsing lightly the phone heats up quite a bit. I know with gaming it would heat up a lot more but wow does it heat up.
The part it heats up mainly is the top half of the phone. When touching it at that heat level it doesnt burn majorly but just feels uncomfortable to hold. This is me playing Need4Speed No Limits for about 10mins and the heat gets that way. Also taking videos and photos it tends to heat up a lot which is understandable.
What i dont understand though is when Im just browsing google play store then it heats up quite a bit. Is it suppose to heat up so much so often?
What is the normal heat levels for this phone? Im not sure what would be classified as normal temperatures. Last time I used a high end smartphone was with the Z1 and that never heated up as much as this phone at all.
The Snapdragon 810 SoC runs hot so the Z5 has two heatpipes to remove the heat from the chip. You're just experiencing where that heat ends up.
Note: phone gets warm while charging so gaming+charging together will be even hotter.

I see. So its basically pushing all the heat there. Kind of makes sense. I never use my phone while charging simply cause it generates a lot of heat. Regardless of the phone I use.

My Z5C always runs cool, it never heated up not even during initialising everything. I never game on the device but I do take quite a lot of videos/photos, browsing, texts, whatsapp, email, youtube etc etc.
Maybe this is another thing that varies between different handsets.

Z5C has a smaller screen with less pixels, that's not a fair comparison to the normal Z5

Guys would like to know about the temps that I'm having with my Xperia Z5. My version is E6603 rev 3.
I made the following temperature tests and used the cputemp as app for monitoring. In all tests I started with the cpu temperature around the 34 - 36 and 26c environment
Shoot in 4K with phone on the table
30 minutes, max cpu temp 70c, 46c battery
Shoot in 4k with minimal contact (phone over two pens)
10 minutes, max cpu temp 70c, 46c battery
Shoot in FullHD @ 60fps with minimal contact (phone over two pens)
Almost 5, max cpu temp 71c, 48c battery
Shoot in FullHD @ 60fps on the table
15min max cpu 70c, 46c battery
Playing Relic Run (tomb raider)
max cpu temp 62c, battery 44c - 46c
Playing Real Racing 3
max cpu temp 56c, 44c battery
Comment and compare the temperatures. What do you think?
Hi there, so I recently received the Mi 9T I just bought a few weeks ago, and the first I noticed is that the phone is perfectly fine except for one thing: CPU Temperature. I set up the phone usually as how I set up my phones, and since I had a history of overheating phones, a good CPU Temp monitoring app is a must.
So I installed CPU/GPU Meter & Notification, but to my surprise, the CPU Temp is stuck at 37°C regardless of how hot or cold the phone is. (Even put it in a fridge for 15 minutes just to test it out). I also installed other CPU Monitoring apps but all have a static reading. However, using AIDA64 and CPU-Z has some readings on various temp sensors on the phone, though I'd note that the pm6150-tz displays a steady 37°C, which is most likely, the CPU Temp. Since the other readings there (~cpu specifically) update constantly, it rules out sensor problem.
I thought this might've been a problem with ROM, so I tried flashing Xiaomi.EU ROM, 12.0.3 Stable, and rooted with Magisk, but still, same problem. I went on googling about how to get temps and I came across thermal zone paths right on
(sys/devices/virtual/thermal_zone+zoneNumber/temp) in which had some crazy numbers (when viewed as text), one of them has 37000, 37100, etc. I don't know if this has a part in the problem or what, since this ticks something https://www.reddit.com/r/Mi9T/comments/cwqrqm/cpu_z_pm6150ibat_lv0_and_lv1_very_high_temperature/
I experimented with my phone even further and saw that CPU Monitor app View attachment 5053905 does have some CPU temps that do actually update (not just steady 37°C) when I charge the phone, or do some tasks. Though eventually, it's stuck again on that 42°C, which doesn't seem right at all since if I have 42 degrees, then I should feel the heat on my phone, but in reality, I don't even feel any heat at all, and the phone doesn't seem to be having a 42°C temp.
I ruled out bad heat dissipation as well by prying open the back of the phone and reapplying thermal paste (I used Arctic MX-4 btw). Yeah, forget about the warranty and such.
May I ask if everyone else has this problem? Maybe if you guys have some time to try out these two apps: CPU/GPU Meter & Notification, and CPU Monitor to check if your devices have the same problem or it's only isolated to just my phone.
I'd also like to know if this is not an isolated case, is it possible that there is a software problem? And can be ironed out by future updates?

UPDATE: It seems to have readings with CPU Monitor app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.glgjing.stark&hl=en) but they are quite inaccurate and puzzling. According to the app, when phone is at idle, CPU temperature are at 36-37 degrees, however, as soon as I plug the charger, the CPU temperature rise up to 40 degrees within 2 seconds, then when I unplug the charger abruptly, it goes back to 37 degrees instantly.
I let it charge for a while and did the same thing, only this time, the CPU temperature dropped to 38 degrees (from 41 degrees while the charger is connected), and the phone feels a bit warm, let's say it feels like 38 degrees for real, that's warmth is comparable to the heat of your neck when you have a mild fever
Go to aida64 and find a thermal zone you want to monitor, then find an app that gives you the ability to change the thermal zone to monitor.
I'm curious if changing thermal paste had any effect. Can you start a stress test and monitor cpu-0 and cpu-1 temps and see how soon it throttles?

I don't get it, how can I find an app that does exactly change the thermal zone to monitor, since I've already tried most of them, and they only go after the pm6150-tz sensor. Only CPU-Z and AIDA64 had readings from other sensors.
For the stress tests, I've been conducting tests on 3DMark, and it gets lower scores after the first OpenGL 3.1 Extreme Test completes. I can't switch over to AIDA64 to monitor temps tho, the phone simply lags a lot that I can't even see notifications properly until the stress tests are over.
I would like to try Antutu but I don't want to download it outside of the play store.

Ok, I don't know of any apps that can do it that way properly. But anyway, I don't think you need to worry about temperatures. Especially if the frame heats up a bit faster now which indicates bettee dissipation. I think it's more important to monitor battery temps anyway.
No closer to finding the solution to any of this, but I can second the crazy-high/static reading behaviour on the Mi 9T. Elixir 2 reports 3700°C as the CPU temp (also only reads 0% usage as well, but that's not necessarily relevant) and CPU Monitor seems to vary, in use, between 35°C and 38°C, but normally sits on 36°C or 37°C.
Currently running: MiUI global 12.04 (stable), but NOT rooted at all.

I know this is probably too late now, but the pm6150-tz was actually the Power Management IC which I think is in charge of device charging and/or CPU/ROM power management. The tz means it's the thermal zone (thermal sensor)
This problem is solved by installing AnTuTu Benchmark and enabling CPU temperature monitoring. However, if you wanted to use a different one with more features, try using Scene6 app. (If you dont mind it being a paid app and having still most of the app in Chinese).

CGB overlay does the proper temperature reading.
