SAMSUNG SM-g900f (INTERNATIONAL) - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well I finally made the switch from Apple to android. I could no longer take the incompatibility with different toys at home. I used to work at RadioShack and I have rooted quite a few phones. I recently purchased a s5 international version, I need to root the phone for mirror play with my appradio. I have spent a few hours reading and trying, I took it to a droid friend of mine and he attempted with no joy. What info do you guys need from me to make thei happen. It says 5.0 (guessing lollipop)....... I tried rooting with Odin.
Thanks for any help guys

Flash TWRP then try flashing SuperSU.zip

Agree with previous poster, but you need to flash *specifically* twrp 2.8.7.0 klte......
For some reason, this version is the only one that works with some LP firmwares....
And make sure 'Reactivation Lock' is switched off before you start.
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg

Thanks I'll try that version. I kno I've tried flashing twrp 10x. When I try to enter twrp mode it never works. It goes to the normal page. I'll do it again tonight when I get home so I can give very clear data regarding what I'm running into.

I have followed the instructions posted by others step by step and it either boots into recover mode as if twrp was never installed or freezes and goes into a boot mode flux. Wish I could just pay someone to root this phone..... I am beginning to think it can not be rooted..... Does anyone have a link for updated instructions bc the ones I'm using are from March 2015...... I am using Odin 3.09.

Did you try CF Auto Root first?
I don't see it mentioned
And try ODIN 3.10.7

He mentioned trying to root using Odin, I guess he tried CF method using the tar file.

Flashing TWRP from ODIN then SuperSU from TWRP is another way to root using ODIN
But also, some people have no clue what they are doing, and try flashing all sorts from ODIN - without CF actually mentioned, we are guessing

Even with Lollipop, you can still root your Galaxy S5 using CF Auto Root. It is flashable via Odin.
When you install custom ROMs or recovery like TWRP, make sure Reactivation Lock is disabled or else it will block any custom binary it would detect.

Download a stock firmware from sammobile.com, preferrably ANE2 KitKat build. Flash it via Odin then once the firmware works, go to Security settings then disable Reactivation Lock. You should be able to flash a custom recovery and boot to it then.

Did you check the MD5 before flashing? Are you absolutely sure the ROM your flashing is compatible with your device? Were you on the latest MF3 firmware before you started flashing?

it appears you have flashed an ATT rom for the i337 and not a Rom for the i337m -- you now have several options to restore your phone
1. flash the Loki'd fix to allow the kernel and rom you flashed to boot your phone or
2. flash a cutom kernel that does work with your phone such a Ktoonz kernel (read the install instructions, for your i337m you need the TMO version of his kernel) or
3 download the stock firmware package for your phone, I'd recommend MG1 either from a link on xda or from samMobile or Samsung updates and install using Odin -- this will completely reset you phone and then you can worry about root and custom recovery after
If you do decide to install fresh factory stock MG1 I can recommend using CF-root to root the i337m and then installing Philz Recovery rather than regular CWM as it installs more easily and plays nicer on the i337m in my experience.
Remember each phone is different but do not attempt to install ATT designed roms on your i337m unless you have the loki patch also on your SD card ready to flash also.
There are many great roms available that do fir the i337m and are specifically set up for our phone.
But first, let's get you out of the download loop. EIther of the 3 options above will do. Personally, I would recommend the Odin install of the stock MG1 firmware and start over with a factory reset and a clean phone.

Its not the ROM that's incomparable its the kernal your using. Find one for a i337m then flash it immediately after you flash your ROM and see if it works.

so just to go over the steps to make sure i dont mess this up,
so i flashed to the origonal versoin with odin
that worked
then i rooted it using CF root
now i got 2 files from philz and i'm not 100% sure what to do with them, i got a .tar what i assume i flash with odin and a .zip i'm not to sure what i do with they are both named philz_touch_5.15.0-jfltecan.tar.md5 and philz_touch_5.15.0-jfltecri.zip
then once i get into recovery i know how to flash roms, its just this whole kernal thing thats got me confused.

READ THIS FIRST:
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE THE MF3 FIRMWARE ON YOUR S4. THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO RIGHT NOW. IF YOU DO, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL A CUSTOM RECOVERY.
You don't have a custom recovery already that's why. Did casual not install TWRP for you? If not try installing Goo Manager from the app market and try installing TWRP that way. MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU INSTALL IT, IT SAYS YOUR MODEL NUMBER EXACTLY! I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! When you have TWRP installed, then flash philz with TWRP and you'll have that custom recovery instead.

do not use the zip you quoted it is not for your phone
use odin flash the tar philz_touch_5.15.0-jfltecan.tar.md5
now you have stock updated MG1 firmware with the latest baseband
root by CF root
Philz Recovery
Now follow the next steps:
1. set up your google account play store etc.
2.next, go into the recovery and do a full nandroid backup -- this gives you a stable base you can restore when needed
3. go flash a custom rom, I highly recommend the latest version of Goldeneye -- updated, well maintained, great developer, clear install instructions
4. try itt then again, use recovery to make a 2nd nandroid, this one of your custom rom install -- try different kernels, every phone is different and someone's favorite kernel just may not like your phone -- doesn't make it a bad kernel just makes it the wrong one for your phone, flash a different one
5. theme if you want -- this is where your recoveries become important as themes are notorious for not always sitting well and all is ok if you have a backup you can return to
6. NEVER flash a baseband from another variant -- stick with your MG1 from your carrier until your carrier updates stock firmware

Problem installing custom recovery using Odin

Hey guys, I'm pretty new here and new to rooting devices. I recently just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S 4 SGH-1337 (At&t) with the new "TowelRoot" and then using Super SU to finish the root. I has a question when it came to installing the custom recovery Philz Touch. I have the 4 most recent versions of PT and using Odin v3.09 and v3.07 I am still unable to correctly install the recovery. When I try starting the process I get a "Leave CS" in the bottom left of the Odin window, and when I start the process fails? I've noticed when I go into download mode on my S 4 the phone tells me on the the official binary and official operating system. If I am rooted should that say something else? I have checked the Root Checker app and it says I am in fact rooted.
Other solutions I've already got advice and still unable:
- I'm using my out of box charging cable.
- I am pressing start after I ad the AP in Odin.
- The phone is in Download mode.
Can anyone help me out and assist me? This is super annoying and I would love to figure it out soon. Thank you in advance!

Since towel root worked in your phone I'm assuming you're on firmware nc1. This can not have a custom recovery installed. In fact you probably erased your stock recovery trying these other ones. I suggest using odin to flash nb1 then update back to nc1 and if you want a recovery yo install another rom (only touchwiz based roms) you'll to use safestrap. That is the only option at this time.

Thanks for the response. I am on firmware NC1. After posting I have read that there is a new bootlocker (?) that was pushed on the 4.4.2 update preventing people from actually installing custom recovery and other things. There is a workaround going to an older version to then root and get a custom recovery, but I definitely don't have the knowledge of what to do.
I'm not sure what you mean by me probably erasing my stock recovery? Are you saying if I try and restore my device it will not work?

When you tried to install the custom recovery it more than likely erased your stock recovery and the only way to get it back is to flash nb1. And going to an older version is no longer possible. Once you update and the bootloader is updated you're no longer able to revert to an older bootloader. Trying to do so could brick your phone

I didn't go very far i the process and I'm fairly sure I didn't for the simple reason that it did not work. I can definitely be wrong and you are probably more right on this situation than I am.
Thank you for the heads up with the older version not possibly anymore.
Do you know any confirmed ways of rooting and flashing a custom recovery since 4.4.2? If not I guess I'm just going to wait a bit for a confirmed method.

Before proceeding check to make sure your stock recovery is still intact (power phone off, wait 10 seconds, power on while holding volume up/home button/power if you boot into recovery you're fine and can proceed with towel root (just Google it it'll come up right away) download and install the apk on your phone and it'll root your phone for you. Look at sammobile.com. I see Verizon has it up but they're the only ones so far. The ota generally won't work if you're rooted. You could try unrooting in supersu then take the ota.
Edit, fido has it up too!

Thanks man... I already tried to do the unrooting using supers and didn't work
If some could post when the oficial firmware is released it will be very useful!!
I, CF-Auto rooted it with wrong model!!!
I made a mistake...
I downloaded the wrong Cf-Auto-root file for my device and then I flashed it with Odin: result
Phone is not bricked but when I run Root checker, I get this error message:
"Sorry, Root access is not properly installed on this device"
So what I did was I tried to cf auto root Odin with the proper model from chain fire website (sgh-i337m) and no luck, I still get
same error message from Root Checker.
Am I screwed or is there a way to revert everything back ?

booted recovery mode, phone now unusable
Using CF-Auto-Root, I successfully rooted my phone updated to Android 5. Everything was running fine until I booted in Recovery mode just to look around (out of curiosity). I didn't select anything, only 'reboot'. When the boot sequence ends now, I can only see white alert boxes on a black background listing every apps that boots at startup accompanied with the phrase 'has stopped working'.
sounds as if you have an error either in the absence of a custom recovery or the kernal. Pull the battery, wait 30 seconds at least. Go into download mode, use Odin to reflash the stock Bell OC4 firmware but leave auto-boot unchecked -- wait until Odin goes green and says pass -- this can be quite a wait. Pull the battery. Restart the phone. Don't be surprised if it goes into stock recovery on first boot -- let the phone do its thing to get itself sorted. Set the phone up in stock mode first.
Then go back into Odin, flash a custom recovery and install SuperSu using a zip file flash from within that custom recovery.
I thought CF-Auto-Root was to blame but it's actually the CyanogenMod auto-installer. I thought it failed cleanly and nothing was pushed to my phone, but I was wrong. Thanks!
pit partition
I everyone, I tried to unroot my canadian s4 and now bricked it and stuck in the downloading screen. when trying odin, I get the "there is no PIT partition". How do I fix that please?
there are general instructions posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477 you will need the PIT file specific to your model of S4 and the correct firmware rather than the files listed in that guide if your model is not the 9505 i.e. if it is i337 or i337m -- make sure you download the correct PIT and firmware files for your model first then follow the instructions in that guide using the appropriate files for your phone
Actually I found a video on youtube and contacted the guy on twitter. he suggested changing out the port and cable. i also switched to a win 7 computer vs. win 8 and using official samsung usb cables and was able to unroot and also update to lollipop.

You didnt read my question? i am not trying to be rude or anything but i clearly mentioned if i try to flash CWM or recovery or ROM or anything it won't work and that's the error i get...
you know anything about that error might be able to help with? it has been really hectic i can't figure out what did i mess i dont know!
i hope someone help out here soon
What the previous poster said is correct.
Looking at your pictures, you still have the stock e3 recovery installed. That recovery WILL NOT flash custom ROMs or custom recoveries........
Are you even ROOTED?
If not, that's your FIRST step......
Second step is flashing a custom recovery.
Third step is flashing a custom rom or whatever else you want.......

You don't need to be rooted to flash a custom recovery. You need to use Odin to flash it, then you can flash a superuser zip to gain root. Or you can flash a custom recovery then a rooted rom. Having a custom recovery has nothing to do with root access.
Ok....so I over simplified it for him.....but the fact is, he ain't flashing anything with stock recovery......

Very true
I know this that's why i said, no matter which recovery i flash it isn't working it wont' show any recovery and it comes back to this recovery that i have. after broken android so that's where i am stuck.

Well root isn't needed to flash via odin so the problem is flashing any recovery via odin as i flash any recovery it ends up with that recovery that it is! which is why i am not able to figure out what is going on... and is why i asked whether i flash via this recovery or odin or try to flash non stock rom i can't flash anything. i am simply stuck at it...

What version of Odin are you using? Have you tried a different version? Maybe different versions of recoveries?
Flash recovery from ODIN, not from stock recovery
---------- Post added at 11:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:07 PM ----------
Not to be rude, but you need to give more information like model number, recovery you are trying to flash etc etc
That's basic
You also need to be in download mode, you failed to mention anything about download mode.
Am using v3.10 and i used others too... but its same as i flash any Recovery it is done successfully but when i go to recovery it shows it's not been done ...

Model number and operator? Maybe I'm wrong but that looks like locked bootloader
Ahh lock bootloader? doesn't recovery take care of all that? as in this case that doesn't work so it isn't or maybe something else but just saying..
its SM G900F and Virgin Mobile Network UK Sim Card

No, it does not take care of that, otherwise locked bootloaders wouldn't be a problem, and they are [emoji14]
If it's the F variant, the same as I have then the bootloader isn't locked......OP...what version of Android is it running?.......

That's what i am thinking too unless i am wrong? i switched from 4.4.2 long back to lollipop 5 and i believe since then its being like this or just right after the flash? not sure precisely though its the same time nearby...
its really getting on my nerve now as i really am stuck with this crap and i can't do anything...

The fact that you are on lollipop means that you have Samsung's new 'secure' bootloader. And even if you downgraded back to 4.4.2, you'd STILL have the secure bootloader.....
(NOT locked.....secure.....There IS a difference)
On my phone, I rooted before it had a chance to upgrade to 5.0.+ so I don't know what's available for lollipop in terms of custom recoveries or how to flash them......but I'll lay odds that it's that secure bootloader which is causing you these issues........
You may well have to root before you can start to go custom.....and as far as I know, the only way to do that on lollipop is CF Root.........

If you are trying to flash custom recovery onto a G900F that is upgraded to Lollipop (not sure about other models) do it this way
1. Make sure you have fully stock Lollipop 5.0 installed
2. Download the latest TWRP from here 2.8.4 or higher, you need the klte.tar file not the .img file
3. Download the attached zip and put a copy in a folder on your internal storage
4. Put your phone into download mode, start Odin and connect your phone to your PC
5. Click the PBA button and find the TWRP .tar file you downloaded
6. Click start. when it has finished let the phone reboot don't disconnect it until Odin says PASS
Custom recovery should now work
To further root it
7. Go to the market and install SuperSU from Chainfire (make sure it is Chainfires version)
8. Once SuperSU is installed boot into recovery and install the zip file you downloaded earlier then reboot your phone and leave it alone for a couple of minutes
9. Go to your apps and tap the SuperSU app wait for the message to appear asking to grant root access and allow it
You should now have Custom Recovery and Root
I do have Secure bootloader not sure how i endedup being in that as i was rooted and had custom recovery when i was using 4.4.2 and that's the reason i have taken a picture of my download mode that shows its secure so now how do i get rid of that?

Just did this and it damaged the ROM to core and now trying to reflash the stock rom to get it fixed doesn't help at all! as i said the problem is with the recovery so it is secured that's how much i've explored so far and is the main problem for me...

Did you flashed twrp on Ur device?
for install cfautoroot you must install twrp.tar on your PC (download from here https://dl.twrp.me/klte/twrp-3.0.2-2-klte.img.tar). then you must flash it via odin.
to flash it make sure you installed your device drivers on PC and enabled USB debugging in developer options.
then boot your phone in downloading mode by pressing power+home+volume down button. then connect your phone to the PC. open odin app and choose the recovery.tar you install from the link i gave you. flash it and wait until finish(maybe 2 or 3 min) and then reboot your device to recovery by pressing power+home+volume up button. flash your cfautoroot and enjoy [emoji5] .

I get the same exact thing on a sm-g900t3 (Galaxy S5 - tmobile, north America) Oddly enough I can get https://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxys5qualcomm.html installed no problem, but whenever I try to install root, either the supersu.zip via twrp or chainfire's autoroot directly from his site, it just bootloops into recovery.

I actually got it working, by installing a different version of supersu. The one I had was an update-supersu. I then found the full version and it worked. It did reboot itself a couple of times. The cf autoroot did not work for me at all. I opened it up in 7-zip and only saw cache and recovery, nothing related to supersu. I would like to tell anyone that the roms from sammobile did work, but I had to try a couple of them before i found the one which would flash properly.
If you extract the boot.IMG (or recovery.IMG I don't remember but not cach.ext4) and flash it via TWRP it does the trick. That's what worked for me.
