Earpiece volume low - Droid Turbo 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a new T2 and the sound seems pretty bad when coming from the earpiece. I tried other phones in the store and it seems to be a spec issue. Is anyone experiencing lower and duller/flatter sound quality?
I tried the Samsung 6 and lg g4 in store and for me the G4 had the best and cleanest sound. My G2 is good too.

Is the advanced calling HD activated? This helped my volume

this might be silly, but i know some people do this, as i did for at least the first day while i was setting it up
did you peel off the factory protective plastic yet? i thought we had another crappy speaker until i peeled that off then it was actually quite loud!

Yep i activated HD voice and i took the screen protector off.
I even did a hard reset today. It didn't really change the volume. It's not too low to be heard when at home. But if in a public environment, i feel that volume could be an issue.
I have tried Volume+ free

Hey bud it's like you have to position the phone a certain way almost facing down instead of at an angle for your face. Seems like sound comes best form a certain angle.

Did you try to turn voice privacy off?

Open the phone app, then click the 3 little dots in the top right corner of the screen, then click settings, then click calls, scroll all the way down and will see the option is checked. Uncheck it to turn off. Remember setting for a phone is restricted to just phone setting but apps have specific settings too

disable any speaker FX on audio

Tmo earpiece volume

Has anyone noticed that the earpiece volume during a call is not loude enough?
Is there a reg edit to get this up a bit?
Thanks,
Jeff
I've noticed that too. Soft and too low for my taste. Would be great to have it a bit higher
I noticed that too on my TMO TP2 and did a little experimenting.
It appears to be related to the 'noise cancellation' settings, if I'm not mistaken.
I found if I go into: Settings> Personal> Phone> Advanced> (last Tab on right)
On the "Advanced" screen right at the bottom is-
"Reduce noise in phone calls",
'Automatically' is set as default.
When I change this setting to "Never" the in-call earpiece volume becomes very much better.
No idea if there is any other side effect in other areas yet, but in-call audio has certainly improved.
HTH.
There are a couple utilities floating around here, audiopara3, one called full boost and another light boost. I know when I tried both on my Rhoduim, I could not hear them but they can hear me. I have tried the full & light boost.
Then there are others that say it makes the sound too distorted and crackly like its going to blow the speaker. It use to work perfectly on my Touch Pro1 but not on my Rhoduim.
Just be careful when using this and don't blow your speaker.
hd tweak is what finally worked for me i changed the acoustic setting from 100db limit to normal and now it sounds much better and its not hard on the speaker
Sweet! Thanks for the tip on HD Tweak...I can now comprehend what callers are saying...

[Q] Earpiece distortion

HI there guys.
Brand new to this forum.
I've searched for days and I'm unable to find a solution.
I'm experiencing a crackling or a distortion on phone calls at certain volumes. I noticed it with certain pitches in peoples voices it would cause a vibration in the ear speaker and some distortion in the sound. Kind of like the speaker is being over driven or has too much power going to it. It usually goes away if I turn the volume almost all the way down, but this is obviously not a practical option since I'm not always making phone calls in a dead silent room. The speaker phone works fine. This only happens when I'm using the earpiece. Is this normal? Is it related to the camera autofocus sensor rattle? Are the sound vibrations from a person's voice enough to set off the rattle? It's really annoying as I tend to make phone calls a lot and I don't like using speaker phone or a headset. Does anyone else have this problem?
From what I can tell, it happened and was normal in the S4. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280930).
Please help. Im deciding if i need to return it.

It's too bad that you didn't describe it in more detail.. i.e. give us steps to replicate it. A recording of the distortion would have been helpful too. I haven't noticed what you describe but it sounds like the gain or auto gain is too high and your earpiece speaker is being overdriven.
There is a gain setting in the service mode menu but first you need to distinguish an app issue or possibly damaged speaker before messing around in the hidden settings. See if you can find an audio app that will give you a wider adjustment range for your system volume and gain.,

Thank you for the reply.
If you go into the service menu, the go into the low frequency test. At 100hz and 200 hz there is a little bit of buzz in the headset reciever unless you really push it against your face (which i assume kind of tightens the spaces in the plastic and prevents whatever vibration in the speaker is occuring).
Hmm.. the vibration is akin to as if you were speaking into some cellophane wrap; like some film (maybe for waterproofing) is covering the speaker.
Oh. It's also worth noting that I cannot replicate the issue on Skype or Viber. Those sound crystal clear.
Bump. Anyone?

[Q] static noise in earpiece

has anyone else noticed a rhythmic static noise in the earpiece when making calls?
wondering if this is normal for the phone (it sounds like electrical interference), or if there's something going on specifically with mine.
it could be easy to miss unless you're listening for it - it blends in with the normal background static of the call.
but i hear it also when making VoIP calls when they're connecting, which should be dead silent.
i realized it doesn't matter if you're on a call or not.
and the noise is more or less the same if you've got your ear against the phone or the rear battery cover.
it's the same with the volume muted and on airplane mode.
the one time it went away completely was after i turned the screen off, but this wasn't always the case.
Video Recording too

so you hear it too. maybe all of 'em do this? sharp after all is known for their displays, not their audio
can someone else give the top back of their phone(s) a listen, with the screen on, to see if they hear the rhythmic static noise as well?
i tried to go to best buy to test a phone there, but all they had was dummy display model.
erm, dozens of people on here and nobody can just say "yes my phone does this too" or "no yours is defective, you should replace it". anyone?
i got the phone back from sharp service yesterday. new phone doesn't seem to be making that static noise.

There's no Sharp service around my place. What did they do to the phone?

Pop noise when receiving a Notification

I just got my moto x Pure a few days ago and i noticed when i receive a text message i get this pop noise after the notification sound stops playing. I went in the settings to change the notification sound and as im switching between them they all have a pop noise always after there done playing or sometimes before playing. If i try to change the ring tone it doesn't happen, they start and end fine with no pop noise. I remember having a similuar issue with my nexus 4 and to remedy the situation i would disable touch sounds and vibration but it doesnt seem to help with this phone.
Someone on reddit said he had the same issue. Anyone else experience this ?
Yep. Happens on my too. It's the speaker going online and standby. Happens on all phones, but in Moto X Pure is loud and noticeable. Cheap speaker? Don't know. Also on my, when playing the tone "Zeta" I get bad speaker crackling noise. Specially when volume is high.

i adjusted the bass in the audio equalizer and it seems to help with ring tones like the zeta, at least i think it did.
I dont get the pop noise when i play a youtube video or listen to google music, so its weird to me.

Thank you for posting this. Now I know I'm not the only one with the problem. I was worrying I'd have to do an RMA, but maybe this'll be fixable with a software update.
Didn't even notice the crackling until I specifically listened for it. Now I can't unhear it. Ughh! This is going to drive me nuts. Similar issue with my N6. Playing music or videos there is no problem. Just notifications and ringtones.

I don't want to highjack the thread, so we should probably move here to discuss crackling: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/help/bad-speaker-crackling-t3200536
The speaker crackling and pop noise after notifications may be seperate issues

Pretty sure they are. I have both though. I notice the pop very easily at night. I have a few apps set to priority, so they'll ring even when I'm sleeping. Last night I got a couple notifications and definitely heard an audible pop about a second after the tone stopped playing. It seems like it happens when power is being cut to the speaker.
My Nexus 6 had similar QC issues. The phone stopped detecting SIM cards about a month after I bought it. Moto sent me a replacement which I sold because it was NIB. Beginning to worry that Lenovo is cheaping out a bit too much on their flagships.
I don't have my phone in hand yet so...has anyone tried some third party ringtones or notifications? The reason I ask is because I imagine it's possible that the default recorded sounds may have some type of silent space after the "music" or the sound stops causing this. Maybe somebody can try a few home made ones to see if it still happens.
Yes i tried third party notification sounds. Same thing happens
Anyone else affected by this bug
Getting the pop noise as well. It's very noticeable. I'll hold off for awhile and see what Moto does about the issue.
I've got it as described above. Sounds like power coming on and then cutting off. Reminds me of powering on and off an old boombox from the 80's.

I have no POP noise at all. As I said before I think it has to do with the earliest batches that were delivered. Even though I ordered on the second day of pre-order I received mine several days after many others. Maybe I got mine from a second, or later batch?? No speaker distortion either even at full volume!
Decided to return it and get another one. Maybe I just got one of the bad batches. I also had a small scratch on it right out of the box. Would've ignored the scratch if everything else was good... but I can't unhear the speaker crackles and pop.
waiting now for return authorization for this problem, which is a little hairy because I'm not the original owner. I do have the receipt though--shouldn't the warranty transfer?
That pop noise very noticable when using viber...
Also try to press keyboard keys and put the speaker closer to the ear... Its like speakers are turn on/off ...
yeah, it's the amplifier shutting off. happens on crappy laptop soundcards too usually. pretty much all of them have it.

Maybe with custom kernel it could be fixed?
perhaps, but who knows anymore. lol

Unbalanced speaker volume (top too quiet)

I have had a white Z5 Compact for a week and have now noticed that the bottom speaker is much louder than the top, ruining the stereo effect. I am sure it did not come this way out of the box. I didn't notice until after the recent firmware update (32.0.A.6.152), but cannot know whether this is the cause of the problem. I went through the hassle of factory reset and the phone still has the problem. I haven't subjected the phone to any physical trauma at all and will be returning it.
I've had 4 (seeking a good camera) and the 3 that I tested this on were all like this.
Will almost certainly be "fixed" with custom roms in future.
Dont have this problem on 152
I have it the other way around, top speaker was soft first out of the box and after the update it seems to have fixed itself.
Problem seems to have fixed itself...
Weirdly, the speakers seem to be working fine now. Hope it's not a hardware issue.
Just out of curiosity, have you noticed any change with the different audio settings? Are they all off or do you have any of the DSEE HX, ClearAudio+, or Dynamic normalizer on? It may help to decide if it is hardware or software. One of the Audio settings codecs could be screwing with the volume and stereo effect.
I feel that the issue is software related. When I am on a call and switch it to Audio Output the bottom speaker is far louder than the top. I'm unsure if the top is putting out any sound at all really. But if I play a YouTube video or regular song, the stereo effect is playing equally from both top and bottom speakers. Not to mention talking on the phone normally is obviously through the top speaker and it works.
I did'nt have any of the Sony specific audio settings turned on. I ended up asking for an exchange - don't want to take the risk of it being hardware given it's international no warranty. Someone on another forum suggested perhaps I had gotten the phone wet, as that tends to muffle the speakers, but not the case - I have no intention of testing the waterproofness that Sony has backed away from
Update
I have experienced the problem on my exchange phone, but it is intermittent. Example: listening to Google Music after taking a phone call. I suspect it's software related - a sort of "mode" bug, where the phone was in one mode and is passing from another. Similar to how auto-brightness sometimes makes black colors look washed out when waking the phone.
Annoying but I like the phone enough that I'm keeping it. I just feel that if you like a compact phone (under 5" screen) - Sony's the only Android game in town.
I have a white international with the opposite. I watch YouTube with the phone at an angle to make it sound anything like it should..
