Nubes READ - Fire General

I wanted to take a minute to post this little PSA from my perspective. Until about two weeks ago I had NEVER owned an Android Device, Blackberry all the way....and then dammit Amazon released their $50 Tablet. They were baiting me, bastages, so I dove in. First site I found was XDA, God Send, thanks to all the Dev's in particular the group responsible for the ROOT (http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/development/wip-achieving-root-thread-t3238152) and @ggow for his work on CM 12.1.
So Nubes, read read read. It was tempting to post questions in the first few days but I would have short changed my learning path and lost valuable experience. One of the best features of this site is not allowing posts from nubes like me in the dev threads. EVERY answer is here, just look.
Thanks again, I'll ever be at the tech level of many here but will always appreciate the work of the masses.

Noob section

I know I may be way out of line here but this is just a suggestion. I am a total noob to the Android platform and I have found this website rather informative. Before I start I just want to thank everyone that has poured their blood sweat and tears into these handset. Your knowledge and time posting in threads is greatly appreciated. I have been sitting in front of my laptop, trying to learn a new OS for days. I have been scouring multiple forums, tons of threads, and Google searching for hours. My GF is pissed at me too! I have been doing this just to find the answers to the smallest of questions. I feel intimidated to post a question because I’m not sure whether or not my question is worthy of posting. Largely because I don’t want my arm bit off by some Linux-Android super alligator genius.
I have been in the saltwater reef hobby for years. I have been a member of many forums. In every forum I have been part of we had a NOOB section. This is a place where you can ask any question and have it answered by another noob, average user or admin. Most of the time the threads are all simple trouble shooting and other noobies are solving the issue with them. I sold my last tank three months ago and I still occasionally log on and answer noob questions. Just to support the hobby. I feel the G1 and Magic sections could find this very helpful.
The more people become informed about how this new OS system works the farther we can take push these devises. They will become faster, stronger and more affordable. OPEN HANDSET ALLIACE! I am aware there are some really lazy people out there that do need to research a little (aka simple Google search) before they post. On the other hand some people have kids screaming in the background, significant others that want them to spend every waking moment with them, dogs barking and the list could go on forever. For these people hours of research just is not an option. They need fast-informed answers. A NOOB section could help free up a lot of time for developers, moderators and senior members. Along with being very beneficial and supportive for the Android platform.
Again this is just a suggestion and I’m sorry for being off topic. Thanks.
searching the forums do not take that long and I think as long as you atleast tried a seach (not spend hours searching) and the "n00b" asks well laid out questions everyone would be happy to answer. I am sure it gets frustrating to the "Linux-Android super alligator genius" types when there are 5 threads already about MT3G rooting and some one creates a new thread to ask how to root the MT3G. Everyone will be ok as long as they think before they post.
This is in my opinoin a great idea!
Im a total noob myself and like this alot.
First question:
Are Flash supported by Hero roms? And will there be problems for official updates for Android och Magic from HTC if I root the phone?
(excuse the bad english)
//Nummer3
I have been here for bout two years now and I agree with it being easy to search threads for answers. Sadly, the price we pay for being "into" our phones is that our spouses, kids, and sometimes work bear the burden for our hobby. The more you learn, the easier it gets. Just keep reading and be a sponge. One day the Mrs. will be bragging to her freinds about her modded device to.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hello everyone! I wasn't sure where to put this... I wanted to put it under the android development section, but didn't want to clutter anything. So, I am pretty much a noob when it comes to all of these modifications to phones. I have pretty much been reading these forums non-stop for the past few days, and the amount of information on here is incredible. Last night I flashed the Axura 2.2.6 ROM to my phone with no problems! I was amazed at how easy it was! All of the applications people developed are so useful like ROM manager and Titanium backup. You could never get these kinds of tools and info from the manufacturer. I am truly in awe of the smarts and talent the people on this website have. So thank you so much, for taking the time to create and put tutorials together, so people like me, who don't understand all of the programming language and resources needed to make something like a custom ROM come together, be able to reap all of the benefits my phone has to offer.
-Tara
P.S. I wanted to click the "Thanks" button on a lot of the threads, but it wasn't there?!
Glad to have you around and glad that the Forums helped you out. This is a tight group (most of the time) even if a lot of issues around Samsung currently going on.
Thanks for the welcome! I look forward to what comes out in the future for these phones... as far as controversey around Samsung... I was part of the group that was dealing with Motorola and the Motorola Cliq. I was able to get out of that mess and switched to the Vibrant, and I feel like I'm encountering it all over again. I know the manufacturers have no obligation to give us updates, but then don't promise it! And if it comes, it's kind of like a really nice surprise! When companies make promises like an upgrade by a certain date, and don't follow through, of course people are going to be pissed! But, with the help of developers, we can enjoy all the benefits the phones have to offer. And probably, the modifications made by developers are better than the manufacturers would do anyway!
Welcome
Tara, glad to have you here, as you already know these forums are a wealth of information regarding your phone. I also got to the vibrant from a bad experience with a phone. (the Samsung Behold II) Follow along, don't be afraid to ask questions when you have them, as someone will most always be there to help. You may even find like I did that you don't need to worry so much about the updates promised by TMO and Samsung. Most of the 2.2 ROMS we have available to us now are already beyond what the updates would give us anyway. So I would encourage you to read, read, read through the threads and to support the developers wether it be Team Whiskey, Master, Eugene, or whoever.
But most of all, welcome
Welcome, because of the people here you will so much more enjoyment from the phone. You are right the stock item is really substandard compared to the custom awesome work of the people in the android family and specifically this forum.
Keep reading, especially the stickys/bible and other notable instructions.
Enjoy and welcome
I have been lurking around<(creepy?lol) and reading the crap out of stickies here for about a month now, and I too would like to extend a token of grattitude to all of the extremely intelligent and helpful members here. Thanks for taking the time to explain procedures clearly and concisely. The custom roms and information you have provide truly make this device awesome.
-Brad
P.S. Sorry for jacking your thread Tara, but I didnt want to add another thanks to the general.
Thanks for all the friendly messages everyone! And that's ok Brad! All day I have been watching folders open on my phone, and just the way the flip out, out of nowhere, is so cool!!! I am just amazed at the work the developers have put into making these phones run so well. And, on top of that, sharing the wealth with all of us, and including step by step written tutorials and videos. They have my complete gratitude and I truly look forward to see what they think of next!

DEVS and the hard work

I have been lurking here for a couple of months now. Trying different roms initially then flashing different kernels. I don't know much about this stuff at all but want to learn. Hopefully I can start learning some coding soon as well. I love this forum and watching the ways in which all of these different mods, roms, etc grow within the community.
From the beginning I have taken the word (rules) of this forum at face value. I have followed (and agree with) READING THE WIKI's. To me they are indispensable. I have read (yes even the 500+) all of the posts that I am interested in learning about. This patience has paid off! Every time I follow your instructions and search threads for answers to possible issues, everything turns out right.
Finally, I came into this forum not wanting to ask for ETA's. There are so many people here putting there daily lives aside, FOR DONATIONS, for our gratification. To me there is nothing more insulting than asking for something you don't deserve. Be grateful. Think about someone asking you to put hard work (time) into something for you that you may or may not get paid for. Charity can only go so far.
Thanks to all of the devs who put there hours into this. LIFE=TIME....
You obviously don't owe us your time.
Hopefully I can start really learning the languages soon and hopefully start contributing to take some of the weight off you guys.
Great job guys!!!!

I know its a semi older thread but I just wanted to echo this same thought & didnt want to start another thread.
As with Mattlebla I've been lurkin for the past few months. With all the hard work and donation of TIME from all the Dev's & ppl whom help others have absolutely given way way more value to us Hero owners.
To all the awesome Dev's we are extremely grateful, thankful & indebted to your hard work. Thank you so damn much! That can't be said enough.

Moving on from noob

I hope an admin can assist me here if that's possible. I'm a new user to the forum although I have been involved in computing for over 30 years. I'm a new Xoom owner and desperately wanted to congratulate Solarnz and team on the Moray ROM and Odachi kernel, both of which I'm using. I am restricted from posting on that forum for ten posts or thereabouts. Do I have to post useless articles until I've reached the required number of posts in order to contribute to the developer forum?
Maybe you should assist others that need help with rooting. You could rack up quite a few posts that way.
To be honest, I don't know why people have so many problems. If one does the research and follows the instructions, generally everything works. I have had no trouble except when the instructions (or steps) weren't followed. Then it was more research and activity to rectify the error. On my first attempt at a kernel update I ended up with a non-bootable device - it was then I realised that I had missed a step. Thankfully, it appears that the Motorola Xoom is virtually 'unbrickable' - fastboot can recover you from any problem. Thank you for the advice. I'll keep looking around the various forums and I'll assist where I have anything of value to offer.
Yours is the kind of attitude that makes this forum great. I'm proud to give you your first "Thanks."
lol im still in the noob status.
still learning :]
I feel like a noob too, quite honestly. I'm just an enthusiast and I'm in awe of the developers and themers that create such wonderful things to delight us.
one day i will learn how to do my own rom xD

Issues on the Moto G (2014) XDA section

I'm a senior member of this forum. I'm 51 years old. I always used this forum for the several devices I own(ed) with great pleasure ever since I joined XDA.
This is the first time I start a thread because I need to say this!
My latest phone: the Moto G (2014), XT1068, is a great phone.
Unfortunately I can't say so about the XDA section here!
First of all there's very littlte development here. Understandable, because it's a relatively new device.
But now to my point: people here are starting threads for the most silly reasons and this morning I read a thread that almost made me leave this section and triggered me to make this thread.
I don't know what kind of people buy this device and then sign up for XDA, but I see a lot of 'unprofessional' posting. A lot of new people who obviously don't have any experience in flashing roms, kernels, recoveries, etc. Nor do they have much experience on this forum! A lot of people seem to have only signed up to know when a Lollipop update wil be there and how to get it! I'm afraid many people are just teenagers here...
I miss the threads with Orginal Developed roms, with questions and logcats to improve a rom. I miss Cyanogenmod, and all the other general roms...
Furthermore, I don't have anything against people of India. On the contrary, one of the best roms here is from an Indian: Pyr0_Bl4de with his Andro-X! But you Indians dominate the threads, not only here on XDA, but also on the Motorola Owners Forum with just asking for ETA's of Lollipop. Many people (and not only Indians) don't read and search first. They just post a question that has already been answered before.
I'm always willing to help, if I can. But somehow my patience has come to an end.
Possibly this thread wil be closed soon too. It doesn't directly contribute to the development here. But I wanted to have it said anyway.
Sorry in advance if I offended people!

"Praise Jah" YOU people..
I couldn't agree more and am probably going to sell my phone for these very reasons. Thank you for saying it out loud.
Agreed, had many phones in the past, never seen such a boring section as this, multiple threads closed down because of stupid lollipop questions, imagine how motorola must feel with the amount of owners asking about LP all the time, I want the update like most of us, but come on people, get some sleep, go out and enjoy the fresh air doing walking, sports or family things and get on with your lives.
In the process of waiting for a new phone to arrive, as much as I like the dual sim on this phone, redraws, memory problems, screen touch problems are starting to get too annoying and I think it's nearing the time to say goodbye to the moto g 2014, sadly., but I will not be loosing any sleep over it.

well said...you can always report such posts, threads to moderator and help them to keep xda clean...i know most of the time i also tend to loose a patience but still being senior member means you have to report posts, keep posting good stuff and help others...i know you already done well for this forum....i will work on cm 12 as soon as stock lollipop arrives for my xt1068.

hope to see your contributions keep coming...you are a good member of community....keep the good work!!!!
@ratyfu dont sell it yet....it is amazing device and motorola actually make wonderful hardware. My old Sprint Motorola photon 4g still the best.

To be honest, I did report several posts and threads. Most of them where closed after me complaining... But I'm always reluctant to say I reported, because I don't want to be flamed for it....
I'm not a senior member and I get a lot out of this section for our great phone, with advice and tips here I've improved it considerably from stock. I've also owned other devices and XDA is a great resource for those and will be for the Moto G 2014 in due course. Patience is the key, more development will come in time, although a couple of non stock kernels and at least one ROM are already here. Enough for me to be pleased about so far.
I don't pay to attention to the kind of threads you allude to, so am happy to ignore them, it takes all sorts to create an active forum, though gw's immature outburst earlier today was classic and earned him the temporary suspension deserved, we shouldn't let posters like that spoil XDA and derail the section. The thread title is usually enough for me to know if its worth opening.
I like this place.

I am an indian, and a senior member of xda. Ported few roms for Galaxy fit as well. But i am also annoyed with ETA for lollipop kind of questions by naive users. Good Luck for Moto G(2014)

Thank you for this post. Unfortunately I already used my 8 thanks today.
To be clear: I still like XDA! There are several very useful threads, and very good how to's! Maybe I have to learn how to ignore the 'bad' threads. Bus as they say here in Holland: sometimes I can't see the forest anymore because of all the trees...

If you thought that was bad, take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2942803
(Same OP)
The lack of any significant project work for the XT106x is easily accounted for -- an update to the next major revision is due OTA. No-one who is seriously considering working on this device is going to bother until then. And even then, it is best to wait for Motorola to publish the kernel sources.
I don't really understand the fuss about CM on the Moto G anyway. The stock environment is close enough to vanilla that I would be happy to apply Xposed (assuming it will eventually be rewritten for ART and the new framework), build a kernel with a few extra modules and useful patches, and then cook up a zip with half the gapps and motorola software removed... Job done.
It seems like 5.0 still has a few significant bugs to squash before Motorola are happy to roll it out. I'm glad they're taking a more cautious approach, rather than pandering to impatient and self-entitled kids.
I have been a member for nearly 10 years now, when XDA was a very small site dedicated to the XDA PDAs and phones back then. During this time I have seen the site grow into an extremely useful support and development forum for professionals and enthusiasts.
But now I am witnessing a slow decline in those people and a rapid increase in members who contribute nothing and complain when they don't get immediate help and don't thank you when you do give them that help. There are more and more vile trolls who stir up the community too. It's disheartening .
I am not a developer and I still see development as a black art which I would love to be a.part of. But over the years I have offered my help to those in need and spent many hours working through something technical in order to do that. Often as I said with no thanks.
I am not sure what we can do about the influx of those that spoil it for the rest of us. But I am not going to give up being a community spirited contributor to these forums and I hope you guys don't either.

For the most I totally agree with you! Still, for the past few years CM was my rom. So I was accustomed to it. It never ever crossed my mind when I bought this device, that there wouldn't be a CM for it... Call it naive, it probably is!
To make things clear: I'd prefer CM11 over stock lollipop! Even when this lollipop it's very vanilla and AOSP
Whatever, most likely there will be a CM12 in the (near?) future.
Guess I have to learn to be patient too...
@smitharro It is a sign of these times. People do not read. Do not give anything from each other. They think that it's okay to start hundredth thread on the same topic.
I'm on xda since 2008. My first phone call, because of which I set up an account here,is the HTC Wizard. I knew then that I was a noob, so I've read. I read everything possible,to not ask stupid questions, to find answers, to learn something.
People do not read and do not care about others.
Now I think that ignorance requires napalm and a bulldozer.
@rufflove i will always prefer cm over vanila aosp or stock mototrola....cm is way better than anything else out there...
and yes i am a member since 2008 ...and i used use my htc at & t 8525 hermes phone( ya that phone still working and i sometimes use it as my 3g modem).
That time xda used to be a site for windows mobile enthusiasts. (xda is name of windows mobile pda)
Now the members grown to enormous amount....
Still i think xda is the best site around to get help ...

Since my old was 5830i Galaxy Ace , i was happy with that forum it was because half of the forum was controlled by us ( RC's ) , no one was a big noob like don't know anything , even that person doesn't know anything but posting in right section helps him . In these forum when i came to see , my first observation was it is totally messed up with many new to ( ANDROID ) users get my point (ANdroid ) due to that , that members post anything what ever they think & just post .
To control these 1 . Take all over unread thread to be read and understood , then a genuine reply . ( it will take too long time not easy )
2. Or just simply reading there OP & hit report button .
3. Or just ignore them & simply watch .
I understood your thoughts , but what can we do 1 or 2 people against the whole bunch of million people so just time is a key wait for a while & we will be on track . Let they get little bit matured & understand what is XDA .
Thank You
