Nexus 5X melted USB port using charger from Google Store - Nexus 5X General

Woke up in the middle of the night to the smell of burnt electronics and melting plastic. My Nexus 5X was very hot to the touch and the plastic around the USB connector was melted. The charging cable (Universal 15W USB Type-C Charger purchased from the Google store) was also a bit melted and was stuck, but came out without too much force. I called Google support today and they are going to replace both the phone and the charger.

Has this happened to anyone else?
It would seem to me that this is all the more reason to purchase chargers directly from Google; if I had not, I imagine this could all be blamed on an after-market cable.

That's a first for me. Haven't heard of this happening with the 5X yet.
Do the pins on the cable connector or the phones USB port look bent or are making contact with each other?

Glad that nothing bad happened mate, i for one will only be charging mine in the daytime while I'm awake! I find that the phone only loses a few percent overnight and the fast charging on usb-c means it can be topped up quickly while i get ready for work etc.
Let's hope this was an isolated incident - glad you are ok though!

I didn't have much time to check the cable before running to work this morning and the phone port is blackened to the point where I can't see any pins. I'll take a closer look later and report back.

I have seen a lot of press on how various 3rd-party type-c chargers can damage the 5X, but I have yet to see anyone have the same issue with a charger purchased directly from Google. Has this happened to anyone else?

Actually, my understanding is that third party cables could damage the source of the charging, not the 5X (i.e., a power brick, a computer's USB port, etc.). This is because the 5X tries to pull more juice than the source can handle.
If I am right on that, then your issue is completely unrelated to the issue with 3rd party cables.

After further research, I believe you are correct. It appears that this was either an issue with the phone's internals or Google's charger shorting out. Either way, I'm still glad it didn't happen with a 3rd party cable/charger for warranty purposes.

Do you have any pictures to support your accusations?

Just for the heck of it you might want to check the voltages in your home if you can. Although it does sound like a faulty charger since this is the only report of it happening.

This is not caused by voltage but by the charged supplying to much current.
Also the chargers are often certified for 100 to 250 volts or around that and is switched, spikes or even a minor spike in voltage will not cause this.
This is probably a bad wire or bad control ciructry in the device(s), depending on source. 3A is quite alot considering the small wirs used in the cable.

You was lucky.
It could have been ended badly...

Thanks, you are correct - I believe the charger says it is rated for 100-240.

Same thing happened to me last night! Woke up to a burned up charging port and cable with the bumper case melted all together with it. Houston we have a problem! I called Google and they are sending me a new device....perhaps to finish the job.

Do you have used the original charger that is shipped with the phone? And which kernel have you been using, the stock one?

after a bit of research, i found that this problem does not apply only to nexus 5x, its mostly on the port fault either on the cable or the phone , something is shorting inside the cable ( bent leg ?)

My USB connector melted too with the original usb cable and charger (then I tried with other cable to check whether charging was still working, and it melted again). Unfortunately I bought the phone while I was traveling to the US, I can't send it to RMA here in Brazil...
Luckily I was awake at the moment and could hear and smell the plastic melting... The plastic piece of the USB cable got stucked inside the phone

Just a nice article on USB Type C cables.
http://www.androidcentral.com/usb-c-problem-isnt-going-away-anytime-soon
My only suggestion is o check the cables before charging. SInce this is the original cable, I can only assume it was faulty to begin with.

I have, it works. The cable is super long.. enough to get to the back of a minivan.
But oddly enough, they sent me the wrong plug, they said maybe I had a different version of the A500.. ahha
But they did correct it and sent me a new plug that fits. However, it is a bit longer than Acer's so it'll feel a bit loose. No worries though, it charges and that's whats important to me. The battery icon will show charting when lower than 100% battery (e.g. 95%), after 100% the charging icon goes away and stays at 100%.
I bought the Walmart charger discussed here and it immediately blew the 20A fuse for my power port.

I've got that one as part of a set:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/160653018416?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Same seller even.
The car charger fit, but it would only charge for about 3-4 seconds; then the red light went out and it stopped charging. I tried it on several vehicles. I think it might be defective. It's supposed to detect a charged battery and automatically disengage, but it does it even when my battery is 50%.
The wall charger does not work. Interestingly, when it is plugged in, it reports as charging, but does not actually charge. I suspect the connector might be too long, and the pin in the A500 can't reach the back of the connector hole. This makes the unit think it's charging when it actually isn't.
I'm currently negotiating to send these items back for refund, but the problem with ordering from China is that there is often a language barrier. The seller did get back to me quickly, but his reply didn't make a lot of sense. I get the impression that he is trying to help me, but it is going to take some effort.
Hope that helps,
-PW

I think this is the one I did buy too. I have had reported as it is working fine but unfortunately since few days now I noticed that visioally it appears as if it charges but actually not while in use. Otherwise, when the device is of, it charges very good.
I think I might need to investigate for some thing more efficient, but where?

I can confirm that this happens with the wall charger I purchased (mentioned above) and occasionally with the car charger too. The tablet will report as charging (lightning bolt), but the battery level will actually be depleting. I've come to understand that this is a common problem with aftermarket adapters.
I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem, or a software one. It's possible that the charger pin might not be making contact completely. It's also possible that there might be a provision in the firmware that prevents charging under certain circumstances. Thirdly, it just might be a crappy adapter that can't handle the amperage that the tablet is drawing.
I've noticed that sometimes rebooting the tablet causes the car adapter to start working, but the wall adapter never works. This may indicate a soft/firmware limitation.
It will require further investigation.

I think I'll investigate this behavior myself too. After reading your post I actually remembered it acting flakey in a rental car on vacation, while playing music off my A500. But I was also charging my phone with GPS on at the same time off the tablet, so imagine the power load on the thing... I didn't pay much attention as I was driving... I practically never use a car charger home, so will have to try and replicate the issue I guess...

I just lengthened my power cord

It's been so annoying having the power cord to be so short. And I don't want to spend like 30 bucks for something longer. So, I just cut it up in half, insert in between 6 feet of cable, and voila! Testing it now. Just saw the power % go from 93 to 94. Woohoo, success!
nice! What cable did you use?
I just use a 6-foot one of these to plug the OEM charger into:

Haha. What's cleaner than an extension cord? Splicing together multiple cords and covering with electrical tape?
I did something similar. Took an old USB cable, nipped the connector and stripped the cables. Used the ground of the USB cable for the ground on the adapter. I ended up using 3 of the USB cables to get some better gauge on the wire to the + of the adapter. Works great! Put some heat shrink on and it looks awesome.

Just kidding -- I know what you're saying. And to be honest, Acer has got to be the cheapest bastards in the entire tablet industry for not adding US$0.20 worth of wire to make the the charger an industry standard length. I mean, c'mon...is two feet of wire really that much of a production deal-breaker for them?
But back on your project, personally, I would only do what you did with an extra or maybe 3rd-party charger -- not the OEM one. But that's just me. I'd rather just use the extension cord until a longer, cheap alternative charger is found.
You still get a "Thanks" from me (if for no other reason than tolerating my smart-a$$ remarks)!

Great find! The original charger bought seperately is $14.95 at Walmart, and still only 2 ft. long!
BTW does anyone know if Xoom's charger would work with A500, the plug seems as big as the Acer's?
Does anyone has the exact dimension of the connector ? int/ext diameter ?
Standard one seems to be 0.7mm int and 2.5mm ext, but I have nothing precise enough to confirm
Edit:
as stated by FloatingFatMan, it's 3*1mm connector:

Heh that's pretty bad.. My only problem has been battery drain while running GPS and Pandora simultaneously in the car. The phone is capable of pulling more than 700mA when you utilize all of the hardware, so there is no way to keep a net positive charge current. Also when the battery gets too hot (above 45°C, I believe), the phone will stop charging to prevent the battery from exploding

I had the same problem charging in car. if using usb to charge it charges at 300mah but a/c charges at 600mah. so if you are using usb and have an extra cable you can short the green and white wires(going to phone) and this will trick it into thinking its on a/c. have not had any problems since doing this. i can go on a 6 hour drive with gps and music streaming and still arive fully charged.
I would like to see pictures if you have some.
I've seen this symptom with a bad flash. Something was using a ton of charge. More than my charger could put out. Hence, battery drain when plugged in.

i do not have pictures. i use heat shrink on my wires so i cant take apart to get any but if i can find another cable i will modify it and take some. it is a simple modification. just carefully cut the black casing from around wires(anywhere along cable, remove about 2 inches) without cutting wires inside. you should have 4 wires(black ground, red 5v+, white data -, green data +) cut the white and green wires then splice them together(the ends going to phone) seal it back up and your good to go. this is just simulating plugging into your a/c adapter. all the adapter is doing is converting a/c to 5v d/c and shorting data wires to tell phone its plugged into wall. usb is already running at 5v d/c so you just have to provide your own way of shorting data. you can ohm out your cable if you like to verify. 4 pins on conector 2 center ones are for data. they are open until you plug into a/c adapter at which point you will get short.
The cable did the same thing on my girlfriend's phone, too. Phone thinks it's charging, therefor no deep sleep, and it just discharges. It may be the cable/charger combo, thogh, but I KNOW the cable is certainly fault; I tried it with other chargers.

I actually had the charger port on my phone stop working, but Android still showed it was charging. I tried multiple combinations of cords and chargers, only to take it into Sprint for a replacement.
When it first started, it only seemed to happen on certain cords and in certain positions, but eventually, it stopped charging altogether.

I swear I am using the cable that came with the phone but fast charge isn't working.... Always says I'm charging in slow mode...
Looking specifically for a close up pic of the two ends of the cable so I can visually verify I have the right one...
Thanks!
Do you use the cable with the original LG Charger ?
The LG Charger is 1,8A output.
The commons chargers and USB on computers are 1A output.
SO if you plug in your cable to a computer or other charger, it's normal.

Thanks!

from the D802, but really just try another cable to the charger if it makes any difference.
Hmmm, that is definitely different than what I believe to be the cable that came with my G2. Not sure how to tell what version of us, but it's Verizon.
But yes I have tried many combinations of cables with the LG charger and none of them are fast charging. Using CurrentWidget and a couple other battery monitoring apps, I've also found that I get a much higher amperage draw from the charger that came with my galaxy s3. Anywhere from 200mA - 400mA, whereas I only get 50mA-150mA with the cable in this pic and the 1.8mA LG charger. But still all of then state that they are Slow Charging.
Can someone tell me if this is the stock LG USB cable?
Does it matter if we use the fat g2 USB vs regular one like above picture?

You would be surprised how many times an USB cable matters, and then again when it doesn't.
For example a chromecast USB cable which I accidentally got, did not charge my phone almost at all and not DATA connection was possible. But that was a clear error and I do not think that cable should be used with anything but with the Chromecast being nicely shielded and all.
ASUS in my country uses same cables as the one pictured above (Still does not mean that his is not original LG). But if you get a normal connection on the computer same goes for AC , USB charging in places where they should be, use whatever cables you want.
Stay away rather from too generic, skinny unbranded ones from chinese pages. (Even though from them I always buy iPhone cables . BUt who would pay 15 bucks instead of 1 and they served my wife well)
So far ASUS, HTC, Samsung , LG, and Nokia cables did there job mixing across my devices.
Verizon stock cable.

Thank you JasonSF!!!
I apparently lost mine then.. Does anyone where you can buy a cable that supports the fast charge? Or even what spec to look for?
It doesn't seem like its a very exact science..

Pagot - YEESS! I acutally used my Chromecast USB cable (which I'll be returned on Monday btw cause, well its just not that cool) ALL NIGHT LONG!!! I didn't think anything of it plugged it in and immediately walked away. Little did I realize, it was one of those cables that, 5 seconds after plugging in, reports that you should unplug it immediately to avoid damaging the phone!!!
I didn't see the message until the next morning and saw that my phone didn't get charged that night. And for about 2 days, I had VERY strange charging issues.. (see this post) I think they've gone away now, except that my fast charge isn't working.. But, back to the original purpose of this post, Im hoping that is USB cable related..
Anyway, it was the wierdest this, for about 2 days, certain chargers and USB cables that have always worked on this phone, didn't. The first day nothing but plugging into my computer would register any charge.. By that night most chargers worked but some wouldn't provide more than 50mA, and now, all of them seem to be working again..
SOOO, moral of the story is that in incorrect USB cable CAN damage your phone! At least temporarily.. Still doesn't make any sense to me how though.. Perhaps some protect feature kicked in and caused the symptoms I saw, but all I know is that my phone wouldn't charge anymore after using that Chromecast cable...

Does Anyone have wireless charge at back cover LG V20 ,but i have...
then i try with Nokia DT-900 Wireless charger dock is not work T T
Thats not a wireless charging back cover
Just to stay on topic ... is there any (official or not) LG V20 back-cover with wireless charge capability?
as far as i know it doesn't work through metal very well...

No. There is a very strong suspicion at most of the hardware for it is present (notice the extra contacts on the back and corresponding insulating pads), but no official back cover.

Aluminum is a non-ferrous metal and so won't directly interfere with magnetic fields. Aluminum is a conductor which means eddy currents are a significant issue. This should be solvable by adding a cut to the back plate. This could also be worked around by drilling holes through the back and having the coil attached to the outside of the back.
I think if we were going to get a wireless charging back replacement we would have already gotten one ages ago. I miss wireless charging alot but I've been using one of those wireless charging pads that plug into the USB port and hid behind my case. It works pretty well just wish I didn't have to sacrifice my USB port.

But neither of those solutions are likely to be done and it is far more likely we won't get wireless charging and much more likely if we did a plastic back would be released.

Would a plastic back be that bad? I suspect LG isn't going to bother though.

not really but yeah i doubt lg will release it considering the v30 is more or less here.
With this metal back, it's not possible to use wireless charger. However, you may try using a USB type-c wireless charging receiver from third-party brands.

I know but I want the USB port to be free to use without having to plug and unplug the wireless charger every time.
I lost trust in smartphones' micro-USB ports after the third replacement of it in my Nexus 5. So I now fear any unnecessary stress on it.
I noticed a wireless charging setting in build.prop -- I was considering changing it from a 0 to 1 and tossing er' onto an LG wireless charging pad but I am sure if the hardware is indeed there, there is more than just a build.prop setting to turn it on.

I do understand your concern .. you may use a high quality accessory or wait (as i do) for LG to make a wireless charger.

Half of the hardware is almost certainly there, mainly the control chip for Qi/PMA charging is almost certainly there. Problem is the coil for receiving power is absent, this would look similar to the NFC antenna around the camera opening on the back. I've got no idea which of the back contacts connect to the chip that is almost there and thus not enough information where to attach a coil to.

This is rather late for LGE to release a charging back. At this point they almost certainly plan not to.

Hello, I have started a thread for technical discussion of the feasibility of our own DIY hardware mod/hack for LG V20 so it can support wireless charging. I hate those plug-in Qi adapters, I think at that point you might as well just charge your damn phone normally

Thanks for this information about build.prop, this will definitely come in useful!
