Exchanging MXPE... How to b/u and transfer? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My MXPE "Arrived" with a scuff on the aluminum frame. Luckily I relayed the aforementioned to moto and I am being given a cost free exchange. I am on an unlocked BL running MM deodexed/rooted. I'm wondering if my LP & MM nandroid will suffice once I unlock my new x and TWRP it? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Yes. Nandroid backup (through a custom recovery like TWRP) is the way to go.
To use a computer analogy, a nandroid backup is equivalent to running a computer drive image clone. You make a perfect copy of the storage contents, so that you can easily backup / restore a system configuration to a device (or move devices).
The one thing I want to mention is that TWRP creates backup folders according to the serial number of the device itself. So when you restore to the new device, you will need to rename your TWRP backup folder name to the new device's serial number. To find out the serial number of the new device, just run a quick backup (e.g. boot info only) just so it creates some folder with the appropriate serial number. Then just rename your existing backup folder to that new serial number, and you can restore.

That's what I was concerned about; ie backing up and restoring device specific info onto a different device. When switching devices I generally like to set them up as a new device and redownload my apps, in my past experience(KK and below) that generally tends to eliminate errors/bugs associated with a nandroid flash. That being said Android has advanced quite a bit since then so I'll give it a try.

A Tip For Nandroid Backups

Okay so this tip comes from personal experience,k before I figured out how to fic the problem that this one created for me.
So, I did a backup before I flashed a mod someone did earlier. Well, the mod did nto work, and it broke some stuff on the phone, so I wanted to do a restore. That was an absolute no-go. I got this error message:
(image link)
So, I got a little worried that I had lots bigger problems. Long story short, I was missing the md5 file that nand creates when it makes a backup.
TIP: When doing a NANDROID backup, verify it's completeness by pressing your "back" key on your phone once the backup is complete. Scroll to USB-MS and select it. This *should* make a box pop up on your computer, meaning that you have access to your SD contents now.
In the SD card, navigate to nandroid/(Hero Serial Number)/XXX-XXXXXXXX-XXXX/ and make sure there is a nandroid.md5 file in there, as well as 3 other files, boot, data, and system.
If any of these are missing, press "Back" hard key to close USB-MS, and do another backup. Delete the current one if you do not have enough room.
The xxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxx above will be a folder, mine's named: BDS-20100523-0334, which is BDS-(year)(mo)(day)-(time). year 4 digits, month 2, day 2, and time 4 digits. If you have multiple ones, choose the most recent one, which would be the nandroid you just made.
Nice tip thanks, I do have a question though.
I thought the whole point of having a recovery in the Hero was to flash roms regardless of what breaks, even nandroid? I mean if your nandroid breaks you can just go into recovery enable usb drive and copy another rom over?
Yeah you should be able to flash any Rom regardless of whether you made a backup or not. I am just saying, its a helpful top to make sure your backup completed properly in case you ever want to go back to your old Rom, in your case, or if you're flashing an update that says will work with any Rom, or your just testing the update, and that update breaks. Same goes with current Rom modifications that you may want to try out.
Long story short, if you know you night need to nandroid backup or want to restore if you're just testing something, be sure to follow the tip above. One more step to save you problems.

Nandroid and Restores

Hi Guys,
I recently bought my Nexus one this past weekend. I'm coming from a Windows Mobile fan(boy) perspective of many years. Not the hugest linux fan, but at least the base level of Android control is a menu and not "dev cmd etc" command line stuff
I like the Nexus one so far. I tried CompanionLink/gSyncit/Nitrodesk Touchdown/Android-sync(Alpha)/Remember The Milk etc, and they all don't sync Outlook very well..so I'm happy to keep my Winmo phone for its use for that, which is excellent and easier to type imho for that kind of stuff within a windows environment. Kind of like a Palm pilot.
As for Apple. I'm proud to say I've never touched one for years, until yesterday. I *had* to get my father a slidey smartphone as a gift, because they're awesome to see and navigate. Since he's not a big data guy I couldn't justify a nexus one, so a used iphone 3G fit the bill.
Hope i don't have to touch it too much tho!
Anyways, I thought I'd give you guys some history on where I'm coming from as an introduction and seeing as I havent posted on here in a few years.
So..regarding my questions:
*Nandroid backups Question
- A nandroid-ext backup will not occur, and will display the ADB Error if you don't actually have an extended partition on your SD Card, correct?
I was trying to do an Nandroid+ext backup, because noobishly i thought it just meant it would backup everything. It didn't work, and neither did the "plug it in the charger tricks" etc, or check if you have enough sd space. So I figured it was because i didnt actually have an extended SD partition. Stock 4gig micro SD btw.
A NAND backup worked after that.
- How do I check if my SD card has an extended partition btw?
*Sdcard/Nandroid folder Question
Are nandroid backups saved here in a chronological order?
Meaning
/first directory asfldkjsdafjs/
/second directory aslkdfjljds/
First is my stock rom backup?
Second is my Cyanogen backup?
Say I do a third backup (it appears third right)? Will it be my Cyanogen backup *plus* all my added stuff I've done since then? Like widgets, contacts, email account setups?
*ROM Recovery
- So as a noob I'd like to play around a bit. But I'd also like to populate my phone with backgrounds (sd card), contacts, ringtones (sd card), Apps (sd and main mem) etc.
Say I want to move from my current rom (cyanogen 6) to say MUIMUI (sp?) in a week. When I goto Bootloader recovery and select the Muigungui.zip, will it still keep the phone "mine" on restore?
Thanks a lot for your help guys! I hope to join the Nexus One discussions now too after this my first post!
Your Nandroid backups are named by date and time of your backup.
Every backup you make, backups ALL user-accessible partitions on the phone. That includes pretty much EVERYTHING, both system (ROM) and data (everything else). All the rest of your questions have answers logically derived from this statement, please use the required logic.
Your SD card doesn't have anything unless you made it - which is obviously not the case, or previous owner made it - which is also obviously not the case, since you had stock ROM.
Thank you Jack.
I understand better now.
On looking at my sd folder structure, I see:
sdcard/HT096P800012/BCDES-date-4 numbers
Does the HT096P800012 subfolder stay the same, or does nandroid add more HT subfolders in time. (just a curiousity question)
In the 4 numbers part, if I did two backups on 201001103, does the higher number indicate the most latest backup by the logic you describe?
also, some backup folders have nandroid.md5 as a file and some don't. What is that?
Nerdy questions I know. I do thank you for your help?
(PS: If I update my radio with a new one, that doesn't affect my phone proper right?)
The upper folder stays the same - it's the name of your device.
4 numbers are hours and minutes
nandroid.md5 is MD5 sum of the backup, for verification. Not needed for restoring, AFAIK.
Radio doesn't affect your phone in any bad way, as long as it's compatible with your OS (radios for Eclair were different from radios for Froyo), and as long as you're flashing it correctly, without removing the power from the phone when it's in process of flashing.
Thank you so much!

No Signal A2017 and efs folder

Hi, I had a problem with my Axon 7.
I have an Axon 7 A2017 the Chinese version, and I intended to root it so I could install another Rom that had Android 8 and a better layer of personalization.
I was reading several forums and pages on how to do the process because before all this I knew nothing.
The first thing I did was unlock the boot manager, installing the TWRP, which did not have any problem.
After this I root it by installing the SuperSU zip, when doing this, everything was deleted in my cell phone and when I started it again it did not have a signal.
AND I DIDN'T BACKUP THE EFS FOLDER.
I recently installed the original rom to see if esque could return the signal but it did not work.
The problem is that I'm not sure if the folder efs is deleted or not.
If I write on the numeric keyboard * # 06 # to see the imei of the phone, it appears on the screen imei1: unknown and imei2: unknown
But if I go to configurations, in phone information, I can see both Imei, IP address, Wi-fi Mac Address, and the baseband version, but I can not see the bluetooth address or anything that has to do with the Mobile Network.
Also through the twrp I pressed the backup option and to my surprise if it lets make a backup of an EFS folder which weighs 6MB. I made a backup on my sd card and when opening it with Root Explorer, I only see files like efs1.emmc.win and other similar ones, persist.ext4.win, recovery.log, etc ...
I tried to copy that efs folder to the root of the phone but when it is restarted it is deleted and it does not appear in the root.
My doubt is that I do not know if the folder efs was deleted, or I have to do some other process
thanks for the help

You installed "the original ROM"? Which ROM version did you install?
If you installed a G or U package your modem is wrong, you just need to flash the A2017 modem via TWRP. i don't think it's EFS at all, though it may be it as well
Even if you flashed an A2017 ROM, just get the Nougat A2017 modem (from the LineageOS 14.1 thread for example) and flash it via TWRP. It may or may not fix your signal problems

How to Restore Deleted Files Post Factory Reset

Hi,
Is there *full version free download software* for *data recovery* (that *actually works and renders results*) to be used on ●*non rooted Android Note 4*●, in order to assist in recovering *deleted files* "*post 《factory reset》*".
The files in question are "*(.doc extension)*", that are associated with "*Colornote App*"; which were already available under, "*data" file*, in ●*Device Storage*● media, *prior* to process of"*《factory reset》*"and unfortunately, were "*not backedup*".
I do appreciate any *professional assistance* to restore my missing files...
I would say your chances are very low - you could try something like this (Method 2): https://www.gihosoft.com/android-recovery/recover-data-after-factory-reset-android.html
Probably stating the obvious here, but if you had done a backup with Samsung SmartSwitch or Kies or some other method before doing the reset, those files would probably be in the backup. 'Professional assistance' (ie Professional Data Recovery services) will likely cost quite a bit - so I guess it depends how much you really need the files back. The important thing would be not to use the device in the meantime, as you risk overwriting the area the files were stored on.

Dr Fone recovery option messed up my phone getting "Enter your password to start up device" and No support single sku

When I plugin my Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime and then select recovery module and it show as connected and then I select android data recovery option and then select recover documents only and then click next. Then it show and detected device model, downloading package and it went like that till 99% uncertain if it hit 100% or not and then it caused my device to reboot and after it reboot now it is asking for a password to start up device but I tried device screen password, google account password and samsung account password but all didnt work. Thus it shows have 7 attempts left before factory reset itself.
The boot up looks a bit different from normal too, unsure if it is coming through a different type of boot and if there is a way to reverse to how it was earlier?
In recovery mode it shows in recovery log pid 2064 ran. where first line filesystem table code was;
0/ efs ext4/ dev/block/platform/1354000.dwmmc0/by-name/EFS(/dev/block/mmcblk0p3) 0
and in following
#ls /cache/recovery
ksmg
-rw------root root 8190724 2022-04-02 11:19 last_ode_dumpstate_err_check_password.log
From what I could see further in log it seems like maybe dr fone tried to root phone since I see files seem to have been overwritten probably as same file name shown where earlier recorded in time stamp as either 2017 or 2008 and underneath that dst is run with today tim stamp.
What would be method to solve to get back to normal working state without any data loss?
It seems when check via dr fone transfer showing as mem capacity 2797mb and 1362mb used whereas it should show as 32Gb, also when start up it says Enter your password to start up your device but I am certain I enter correct passwords but it is not verifying. Also in recovery mode it shows No support single sku supported api:3.
And when try backup option no files come up on scan does that mean the Dr fone recovery package that it installed wiped out the data? Or is it like in another different boot system for recovery? How to solve this problem?
Also any backup software you think could backup stuff before applying any drastic fixes
I think your phone internal storage is corrupted because of Dr. Fone and this is caused by the data encryption inside the phone and I think that it requires the encryption password, and to solve this problem, you must flash a modified recovery like TWRP or CWM and then pull all the data by making a MOUNT of the internal storage it will only works on old Android version 6.x or 7.x but you can try
My android is 6.0.1 so I think it should work, do you have any video tutorials or a thread with stepwise instructions to get twrp or cwm to backup current data and later restore?
Also any idea if use the dr fone repair device feature it might fix?
Dr.Fone only one thing do transfer WhatsApp chat between android and iOS all else features not work perfect so try another way, ask google how mount internal storage on android phones by twrp it’s easy and not need a tutorial just flash a custom recovery and don’t let device to boot enter recovery mode immediately and go to mount and press mtp or mount storage
Looks like the device name has got renamed as well best try to see if have a file explorer or manager for android so can see if files still intact? Any pc softwares that can be used to clarify without need to unlock screen since it is asking for a pass saying Enter your password to start up your device but I am certain I enter correct passwords but it is not verifying.
If the files are intact then I can try twrp or odin cf root flashing to see if can flash home version file so files possibly stay intact. Or if they are anyways not then will try factory reset via recovery mode and then will need recommendation of good software to recover data for free
Any ideas?
That app is trashware. Do Not use!
If a factory reset doesn't clear it you'll need to reflash the stock rom.
The data is lost... that's my opinion.
Always backup all critical data redundantly to at least two hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC... or you will lose data, eventually!
NEVER encrypt a data backup drive.
Do copy/paste file transfer, verify file size and folder count match. Test for readability.
NEVER clone music data bases, copy/paste only.
Do not use compression or apps like SmartSwitch to backup critical data, they can fail you miserably.
You can never have too many backup data drive. Avoid using flash memory; quality hdds have better memory retainment. Store in more than one location. Near lightning strikes can wipe them; a metal earth grounded box or safe is best.

Can you recommend a free pc software that could possibly backup device in current state? Or a free pc software that could do data recovery without need to root phone so if I do go ahead with flash and it wipes data or i do factory reset then I could try to get backup data.

Not on an unrooted phone. You can try this.
If you used Drfone it has likely already encrypted the data with their own encryption key.
Hopefully some of your data is backed up somewhere else because this is a dead horse... I believe.
I be more concerned about salvaging the phone at this point. It's a tough lesson from the U of hard knocks... don't repeat it. Sorry.
