Having alot of fun, wanted to say "thanks!" - Fire General

Hey gang,
New to the XDA community, and wanted to show my appreciation for all of the hard-work and dev that has gone into allowing people like myself to experiment and tinker with the new fire tablet (and for 50 bucks who wouldn’t?)
I've been having a lot of fun these last few weeks troubleshooting, rooting, flashing and everything in between (even bricking and bringing back to life)- its been a great exercise as i haven’t done any heavy modification in the hardware/software realm since my days doing Nintendo DS homebrew https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_homebrew ; and rooting that beast required shorting out the mobo with tinfoil, so this was a less painful process all around.
so after spending the last few days running CM12.1 ; im absolutely thrilled to see how zippy this little device is. Amazons flavor of android was "okay" at best, but this is outstanding and dare I say, lean.
looking forward to future developments and seeing where i may be able to chime in, and what i may be able to flash in the future!
thanks guys,
D

Nice post bought 3 of them one for myself and 2 more for my siblings. Have mine rooted and running SlimLP. Planning on blowing away fireos and have them all on Android seeing Amazon is complicating the process if you get the update.

(Sorry in advance for the long post)
First off, let me say that I am a full-on Android fanboy.
After many years, frustrated by WM phones, I ditched Microsoft and picked up a Droid on launch day and have never looked back!
I have been on line, literally, every day since Nov 6th 2009, pouring over all of the android forums, blogs and reviews.
I have watched the evolution of android and have been so excited with every new update, discovery and app. I still rock the OG Droid because I have yet to see anything out there tempting enough for me to want to ditch it (o.k., maybe the Bionic but we'll have to wait and see!) but because it is also the most developer friendly friendly device anyone has released (feel free to correct me).
I love the open nature of Android, I love the quirkiness and the feeling of being part of helping to build this fledgling into a giant.
I rooted my phone long ago and have tried many, many roms, kernels and themes and I have loved all of it! (I am a bit worried that at the final reckoning I will be held accountable for the 2 1/2 years of my life I wasted dicking with my phones.)
Anyways, that's my history, now my dilemma.
Since the introduction of the first ipad, I never quite "got it". It seemed cool and everything but I couldn't see a reason, or a need it would fill, in my life. My laptop recently died and I do miss sitting on the couch surfing, working, emailing etc. So then I began to see the introduction of Android tablets and, although intrigued, I still found myself not really coveting them.
Flash forward to last Friday. I get a call from my wife who says she's at Costco and do I want anything, as a joke, I said "Yeah, how about picking me up one of those Motorola Xooms. She did.
I have spent the last week, with a browser full of Xoom related tabs, installing apps, trying everything out and I've been having a ball! (I haven't rooted yet because I don't want any hassles when the OTA's rain down from the heavens!)
Although I really like my Xoom and I can't wait to see where this all goes, I can't help but think that I could return it to Costco and pick up a pretty nice laptop with gigs of ram, a huge hard drive and the ability to do anything I wanted.
Today, my Droid can do more than my Xoom can.
I know this will change but even when all of the upgrades are complete, it will still be an Android phone on steroids. (flame suit on).
So I ask you for your opinions, input and thoughts.
I have 90 days to decide.
Thanks in advance for your time.
You, sir, have an awesome wife!
The device capabilities are there to do everything you want and more, however the success of the device and the platform large hinges on the developers. As we have seen with the android phone sphere, (lame quote time) "If you build it, they will come" or at least that is what motorola, samsung, lg, htc...etc are betting on. Honestly its hard to say if in 90 days if you will see delivered what everyone expects of an android tablet from the apps standpoint. There would be no shame in returning and waiting for the development of the android tablet scene if you aren't willing to wait. I can say I am definitely invested in for the long haul and see a bright future ahead.

Is the Xoom a Bust?

I have a birthday coming up in late May. I have a rooted Color Nook which has the feel (and freedom) of the early days of PCs and the Internet (I'm 57) when the idea was knowledge not so much profit. Before the CN I didn't even know XDA existed but their work has me feeling like I'm back in the bulletin board days hacking a 8088 with machine code or scanning phone numbers for unannounced modem connections. Anyone remember when Redhat was the good guys instead of the corporate guys?
Anyway Ive held off buying a iPad2 and am really leaning toward a XOOM, but is it a device "too far?" My laptop is a Dell Studio xps 1645 with an i7 820 and without doubt it was released too early and took two bios updates to get everything working with out auto shutdown every 5 min. Lots of folks returned the units but it is a great laptop now. Stable and fast.
So ... what about the Xoom? Is it the wrong hardware at the right time or can users depend upon Motorola to fix the bugs and end up with a quality machine? I'm six weeks away from plucking some money down on something, so would you guys repeat the purchase? Stick with Motorola?
Most of the issues some people are having are not Motorola but Google Honeycomb. It is a new OS for tablets, basically a 1.0 release. As with any new product version, there will be some issues. It will mature like everything else. Despite some shortcomings, I love it and look forward to the updates and new features in the future.
Forum error: 'Is the xoom good?' thread count overflow.
Seriously, another one?

I'd do it again. In fact next week I will be doing it again when I get my wife one.
I suspect lots of the bugs are from apps not necessarily intended for honey comb, and HC's lack of optimization in a rush to get a product to an OEM (Read Google to Moto).
I don't have any issues with my Xoom, and I use it as a Laptop replacement. Mainly because I do development work on my desktop, and I don't need a portable device that oozes with power.
Like I said, I don't have any issues at all with my WiFi Xoom. I haven't filled up the available 28 gigs of memory yet, so SD is a non issue for me until I do. But I don't see my self filling it up any time soon since most of my MP3's are on Amazon using CloudPlayer.I should say most of the MP3's I listen to - i have 158 gigs of music- but most of it is useless now that Pandora is around.
I do wish there where more HC friendly Widgets, the home screens are a lot of screen real estate with not much to fill them up right now.
It's not a bust for me because I'm really enjoying it personally. Sure its not perfect, but I'm confident that Google/Motorola will get the bugs worked out.
The amount of stuff that you can mess with is very very limited right now because the source for honeycomb still hasn't been released. The advantage from a nerd perspective is that this is the only tablet out there with a truly tablet-optimised operating system, so the most exciting part is looking at the potential that this thing will eventually have. The problem is by the time the source code hits, it will certainly not be the only tablet running honeycomb, and probably not the most powerful. So if your only goal is to play with the software, then I would hold off on buying a tablet at all. If you want to do that down the line, but in the meantime want a cool, fully functional tablet for what it was intended to do, its a great device, and most of the limitations outside of the OS have to do with the current apps being updated and optimised for tablets, which could literally happen at any time (I check the market for updates first thing every day). I personally use my xoom for everything, and my laptop gets used for modifying my android devices through adb etc., as a bulky and expensive HD, and to make sure my spreadsheets don't look weird before I send them out (won't someone figure out how to put a logo header on a spreadsheet?).

Honeycomb is a year too late to be in this condition. Im inclined to say it is a bhst.

Some thoughts for today….

We always comply about the fragmentation in Android OS, but lately we experience the same thing at DEV/USER level now we have pudding, fruit cake, cheese cake, orange cake, IHOP, **** cake, what else? And for the record I am not trying to troll on anyone by the way I am happy camper with my Atrix, first time from the time I got it that I really enjoy it feeling that it worth what I paid for it. My setup so far: GB ATT OTA 4.5.91 (I applied it knowing the risk, and I don’t regret any second), Unlock BL by pudding & OC by Egan, freezing blot ware with TiBu and Autostart, getting 2970+ Quadrant constantly, NO FC, No battery drain, any weird issue, just a snappy experience.
I saw a lot of misinformation lately trying to get as much of traffic as they can get without thinking the real deal of this forum have the best experience with your device.
Just for the records RSD is indeed an internal Motorola tool BUT is the only way to get your device to out-of-the-box state, so from the resale point is a handy tool. I bet if you ever had the experience to buy a second hand phone, mostly all the time you are looking for something that you can return to the out-of-the-box-state and start modding from a fresh start right? So think on the same way about RSD tools.
I end this just saying that I found my sweet spot on my unit with CONS and PRO like everything else in this life, but with a big smile in my face.
Enjoy the ride!
I have to agree, this is the most fragmented forum I've ever seen. To many tasty delicacies, why not just have a couple, solid, good ones? I doubt we'd ever get CM7 at the rate we are going...
@mramirezusa, I don't disagree about such correlations in the 'fragmentation' of Android OS and the likeness of the development threads or offerings; however we must give it time to streamline. Looking at similar forums of other 'mature' devices, such as the captivate, one can make the assumption that our own Atrix development forum will follow suit (in their apparent organization) and uniformity. After all, original mods and scripts from March are still being utilized and we are only beginning our third week into GB and unlocked boot loaders, and our international friends just gained some BL access as well yesterday.
I must agree strongly though that the development forum is getting seemingly cluttered, but the rate of production, nor have our spirits, ever been higher.
@philz, keep your head up, mind you three weeks ago, BL was looked until "maybe" our official OTA GB Moto update.
Agree

New User of the HTC Droid Incredible? Enter here to introduce yourself!

Hi guys, I started this thread with the intent that the new users of our forum could first stop in and introduce their selves. They are the new blood around here and may very well have something useful to share with us! Use this thread as you see fit as long as you keep it clean and follow all the XDA rules
Enjoy!!!
Here I'll start us off:
Hi my name is Josh. I'm 27, married to the best woman in the world. We have a beautiful 5yo daughter who is now in school. I have one dog, one wolf mix, a cat, a hamster and a tank full of minnows(my daughter said we are not allowed to use them as bait, lol) I am U.S. Army Medically Retired. I was a 91B(mechanic)(originally a 63W for you old heads) in the Army until I hurt my back. I've been to Iraq twice, Egypt once, and did maint support operations on the Port of Beaumont, Texas and the Port of Olympia in Washington. I was there while the riots where going on. I did enjoy serving my country and am very proud to have been given this special opportunity. Now that I am out of the mil I can focus more on my family, living life and of course my geeky addiction.
Its been a fun road to now. I started out with my first Android phone the HTC Droid Eris. I enjoyed the works of many great devs and learned so much while using there Rom's. workshed, Tazzpatriot, condemned soul, conap, gnarlic man the list goes on... These guys are really who got me interested in developing and everything else. With there help a did a little theming for the Eris. It was mostly just minor stuff for Cm. As time past I eventually moved on to the HTC Droid Incredible. I've been here since March. I started out again doing some theming then I moved up to my DTR's (BUNKER BUSTER DTR and yes since I'm retired U.S Army thats why it is named something militaryish). Its a fun little project and its also my way of sticking it to the man, lol. Now most of my focus goes to my Roms. I have Pure Speed which is my first and my baby. I'm so proud of that rom. I also have Hybrid Speed, Sub Sonic and my latest my first ever 3.0 rom Pure Shooter.
All in all this Inc community has taught me so much and showed me a whole new world I never knew existed. We have good support, good people and great devs here. My time spent here is now just keeping my work updated and trying to help out as much as I can.
Anyways, enough with me blabbering on... Lets hear about you!
You know the phone is awesome when the introduce yourself thread is created a year and a half after release.

Well its just that here recently we've had a mass of new users show for whatever reason so guess now is better than never.
Seriously, I got mine in march of this year with phones surrounding the dinc that supposedly had better tech and have not looked back since. When my contract is up in two years, there will be some serious advancements in phone tech.

Yea that's me too. I got mine in March as well so I'm still in for the long haul. Just trying to help mold our forums into something fun and enjoyable for all of us alike.
Well i actually just recently got my incredible last month because i smashed my iphone 4(walls and apples don't mix). In the last 2 months I've done more on my phone than development wise than ever thought possible now I'm hooked.

Hi Don me too, lol. BTW what are you doing in here old timer? Just kidding.
New Guy
Retired Navy with 30 years in Subs. (Missile Technician)
I used this forum to root the other day.
This site seems to be used as a reference for others so I went to the source.
I rooted to the CM7 and the new radio that came out with gingerbread.
After going through the rooting process I am ready not to go through the setup again. TB kept force closing after each app install(took a long time) I'll wait for awhile and let the guru's play with the new GB and see what develops.
I am Ryan, been here since day 1. The root process was crazy involved then... Memories! But I got it, after three days of trying after work! I try to help here from my experiences I've had with my Inc. I've rooted my girl's Desire, my Xoom, and this week my buddy's Inc is getting the business!
I've done some minor tweaking of existing code, but haven't done any ROM creating/modding. I've made themes for myself, so I understand how to replace/edit/create draw 9 PNG's and replacing other files in APKs. I've become pretty good with GIMP, but have never created images from scratch.
Other than that, I'm a smart ass, like to golf, and am currently moving in with my girl. I've met really cool people in these forums, who I continue to talk with via Twitter or Gtalk.
Looking forward to helping anyone out, and meeting new/existing DInc owners.

This sounds like an android support group ha
anyway..
Hi!
My name is Paul I've had my phone since November of last year, but only later decided I wanted to try this rooting shenanigans in January. I was again slow to switch from sense over to AOSP, but now since I've done all that I really love my phone and even now I just figured out there's a whole mess more you can do with widgetlocker and other theming apps.

I've recently found a really cool site for android theming:
http://mycolorscreen.com/category/android/
Some of the stuff on there I had no idea you could even do, it's amazing.
I think there'll probably be more user who've had their Dinc for a while rather than newer users BUT ANYWAYS.... Well my name's Antonio and I'm 17. I'm hoping to go to either Princeton or Boston University and become an Anesthesiologist. The Dinc is my first smartphone and I got it in September 2010, but didn't root until sometime around December. I had no idea what root was, I found out more about it when Gingerbread first came out and builds started coming out for the Dinc. I began to do some research and I found Xda, but I didn't become a member until March of this year. I have since then become a flashaholic and the longest continous time I've had a ROM has been Pure Shooter for two weeks so far.... Do we get a gold star for this? Lol

Well I'm not new, but I figured I'd chime in a bit!
Hi all! I'm Bob and I'm a college student with a major in Computer Science and minor in Information Systems. The HTC Incredible is my first smartphone, and since I got it on launch week, I've been hooked! I was pretty active on Android Forums, helping people out and whatnot but I finally decided to make XDA my permanent home.
I've recently begun developing apps for Android just as a fun side project. I have not made a ROM yet, but I have been heavily debating it. I think I'll give it a try when the real Gingerbread OTA comes out, but we'll see since I'll be busy with school starting back up AND work in a few days...
I try to help people out because this is a community. I try to give feedback as much as possible and like to point people in the right direction if ever needed. I am a bit of a ROM flashing addict and even the ROMs that I don't try, I at least read about and get familiarized with! The Inc community is seriously awesome, and we've only gotten better as a whole. Thanks to the devs and to all the members for making my hobby even more enjoyable!
cool idea; you know, i've always wondered about a lot of us here..we always talk phones and whatnot, but we dunno anything about eachother lol
well i'm jay (clearly lol) and i'm from the shore of NJ, born and raised (not to be affiliated with that dirtbag trash on that bull**** TV show, sigh.) i'm 24, i've got my bachelors from rutgers university and my masters from monmouth..unfortunately, since our wonderful government is utter **** right now, the fact that my degrees deal with getting a job in the state/federal government realm isn't helping whatsoever, as I can't land a gov job for the life of me...so i currently work for a small family-owned Verizon store that sells vzw phones, accessories and FiOS. besides that, i'm a musician of 11 years (bass, guitar, drums) and i play bass in a band.
as for my wonderful android journey, it only began in may of 2010 when my buddy sold me his htc eris for 20 bucks when he got his dinc on release day in the mail in april. he told me it'd be fine for me since it was my first smartphone, but he was sick of it already (had it for like 4 months lol) and that it was super laggy to him, so he got the dinc. well, the eris lasted me barely 3 months..even after rooting it and upping my processor speed with setcpu, the thing was still super laggy and the typing lag was atrocious..
so i was one of the people who ordered the Dinc during the Great Amoled Shortage of '10 hahah...ordered it early July, and got it on July 29th...kept it stock for a while, thought the phone was AMAZXING bc there was no typing lag etc...and then that damn Froyo OTA hit, and my phone just started crapping out. typing lag was about as bad as it was on the eris after that OTA, and i almost threw this phone so many times. so finally, in january of '11 i rooted...put on lou's redemptive revolution, still had keyboard lag, and was just super angry.
then i saw Z roms come about, and my lag was finally gone, and i've been playing with new roms ever since. so yeah, safe to say i've easily had this phone for a year and have no intentions on upgrading anytime soon! haha
whoa, that was a book! but whatever. i love my inc, and after just installing synergy again and the Warm theme for the first time, it's bringing me back to my early days of rooting when my first Z rom was warm z two.point.two!! ahh nostalgia.
I'm somewhat new here, due to my recent activity. But I recently got hold of an Incredible after my Droid A855 had growing digitizer issues. I haven't looked back because I really grew to like the device because it's extremely light (sometimes a little too light for comfort), and it's been smooth as melted butter. I'm currently running gingerbread inc deck 1.2b beta on my rooted Incredible. For what I consider(ed) a stop gap device, I'll be hard pressed to find a 4G phone I'll like enough to use my upgrade from VZW..
Another march guy. My name is cameron. I'm 17, currently jobless, have way too much on my plate for a 17 year old, and have the best girlfriend and family I could ask for.
The job field I want to get into its automotive. I've been tearing apart 350 small blocks, 429 big blocks, honda engines, and everything in between since I could walk.
I'm an admitted crackflasher (flashed every rom in the dev section at least once) I was introduced to android when I got a motorola defy for christmas (it blew)
One day I eventually wanna have a family of my own with this girl right here.

Big thank you to the community!

My new Nexus 6 arrived from AT&T today. I have never unlocked, rooted, or in anyway modified a android device before and it didn’t matter. Less than three hours after taking delivery all traces of AT&T are gone. All made super easy thanks to the community here. Now I find myself playing around thinking “Now what?” Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone here.
This is a great place to find answers to any problem the mobile world throw at you....usually fixed in no time too. I have my AT&T Nexus 6 coming Monday via UPS, and I'll be bloat, logo, and boot animi free in about a half an hour or less...haha.
"What's Next" you say? Now that you are rooted, flash a custom recovery.....and just come to peace that you'll most likely become a hardcore Flashaholic one day.
Welcome to the world of Nexus! You have a lot to look forward to
What's Next? Just wait and then there'll be soon to come custom roms and kernels to play around with.
You can unencrypt your device if you haven't done so for a increased performance in read/write.
