New emojis arriving next week for Nexus devices - Nexus 6 General

Android's new emoji arrive next week on Nexus devices http://www.engadget.com/2015/12/02/android-emoji/ via Engadget Android
I'm rooted so I'll have to wait.

If it's a system update, there's no chance in hell we are getting this next week when the carriers control when the actual rollout starts for their customers.

Hopefully the full system image will be out first.

Am I the only one that wishes they'd do away with the 'blob' nexus smiley emojis?

Why wait for the carriers when you can update yourself by flashing just the system image from Google?

Because the factory images are not always available right away (MRA58X for instance)

As far as I know, gingerbread isn't even out yet. Just the sdk.

Pretty sure Google wants to have the Nexus S come out first on the 16th and then OTA the update to us on the 17th or so
Yeah, ask again next Thursday. No reason to believe we'll see it before then.

Unless the famous Football has anything to do with it. If I don't see a leak for the nexus by next wednesday, I'd be surprised
I'm pretty wrapped up in senseui 2.0 right now, gingerbread can wait
What's the point of waiting just for the next day to release the ota for n1? There's no real gain in that for google.
I suspect we'll have to wait longer than 1 day.

How about they sell more Nexus S devices because geeks can't wait to get their hands on Gingerbread so they rush out to buy the phone anyways? Surely we all know it's coming to the Nexus S but look at the thread title, people are going nuts for Gingerbread as it is! LOL
Surely they could just do what Apple does and release the update the day before for the older phones but i guess we'll see

There is a good reason to wait.
Now when the SDK is out all the developers can test their apps against the Gingerbread and fix all the bugs and incompatibilities.
What do you think would happen, if goog realeases their 2.3 update and some popular apps don't work anymore? This forum would literally explode with screams like "fix this immediately or else", "I hate google", "gingerbread killed my cat" and so on. Why google would do that to themselves?
Jw but how is doing the dial in update thing different from the check for updates in the settings?

I'm sure he's doing both just in case one yields different results. Supposedly I've heard that the Settings Updater doesn't always check, but caches the answer for an allotted time. Doing a "checkin" actually goes out and pings google (or wherever) and comes back with a result after a few seconds. The Settings app just flat out tells you no.

No there isn't. That section doesn't 'check' for updates, it tells you the result of the last system check for updates, which is done automatically, or forced through the dialer.
Going to that part of the settings does not force a check.

The point would be so that the Nexus S can be marketed as the first phone with Gingerbread.
Yeah they will probably either delay it to just after Dec 16th or release it some time next week. I'm betting on just after though.

True, but its not like they would lose any buyers anyway.
The N1 is only sold as a dev phone. And how many ppl have a N1? compared to SGS or others...
Also, like when they released froyo...many apps didnt work with 2.2 and had to be updated.
There are alot of devs out there with a N1 as a devphone. Giving out 2.3 before the NS release thus giving time for the devs to update their apps before launch would give android better publicity. And happier customers
I dont know if this is an issue with 2.3 though...
(I know the SDK is out)
I was referring to 1 day vs 1 week or more. More seems more appropriate, as you all say.
The only place I'll be "checkin" with is the Development section chef's.

Why is Samsung taking so long for 4.2

If I were them I'd skip it. It's more an incremental than point release and the only substantial feature that it has that 4.1 doesn't is multi-user. Going to 4.3 or 5.0 assuming there's a material difference in features, infrastructure, or functionality makes more sense. Google seems to be updating all their revenue generating apps without tying them to a specific OS version (EG: Google Now) so all their apps should stay current and Samsung can update their’s via Play or Samsung Apps. When you think about it 2>3>4 were huge leaps because Android was so immature. 4.1>4.2>X.X and beyond are likely to be far less earth shattering. Based on user reports, 4.2 had lots of issues with little gain. I'd rather have something stable that works well than something "new" just because it's new.
Yes I hope they skip. Not a fa. Of the newly centered nav keys

Samsung users their own which is why we have AVRCP 1.3 and AOSP ROMs don't. So we're safe. Kind of sad that OEM's are pushing out more stable s/w than Google. Part of everyone's lust for Nexi is their "pure Google" experience and all the (theoretic) benefits that's supposed to bring.

All devices have 4.1 now. You do not need one for your country, take any 4.1 for your device and simply choose your language at setup, change the standard keyboard language in the settings and all is like in your own country version.

I think that when Nexus devices come out, they get the latest Android version (4.2 here) and they have an exclusive on it for some time. Yes multiuser is nice, but I do not need it.

Thoughts of 4.4?

*MOD EDIT* This thread will be used to discuss your thoughts on the KitKat 4.4 update for the HTC One ONLY. This change is to keep the forum as clear as possible and stop similar threads from being created.
Is anyone else disapointed with the new 4.4 KitKat? I was hoping we would get the Nexus 5 homescreen look, with the transparent folders, status bar, new dock design, etc.. Instead our phones look identical to the 4.3 look!! We didn't even get the 4.4 wallpapers the Nexus 5 has!
I read somewhere that Google wanted to 'test' the new launcher on the nexus 5 with feedback and what not before they made it available for everyone.

Sideload and install the GEL apk, and you'll get all this... works perfectly.
People should know that unless you get a Google device. That you will get a watered down version of their update from your phone makers/ carriers. If you are rooted I an sure a dev will make a rom that has all the goodies you posted in wanting.

How is the update "watered down"? On every device except the Nexus 5, there is no google experience launcher with the update(this problem can easily be solved by doing a search on google). Otherwise, it's a full fledged update that has everything that Kitkat offers.

Does it have everything that the nexus 5 does? I will say that's a big no. So it's watered down from what Google released. Sure you can add in what's missing but still doesn't change the fact that HTC omitted certain features of kit Kat. So I stand by my statement of watered down.

HTC didnt omit anything, Google did. Other than that everything else seems to be there. Dialer search is working. ART, which I found not to make much of a difference is working if you're using an odexed rom. We have different definitions of watered down which is fine, but to me that would imply an array of features missing not just one. Technically the experience launcher is already there, it just needs the apk for it to be enabled as it's rooted within the search app. Everything points to Google releasing the launcher apk in the play store soon.

What? HTC didn't omit a single thing. The HTC One got EVERYTHING the Nexus 4, 7, and 10 got.
It's more accurate to say the Nexus 5 got an enhanced version, even compared to the rest of the Nexus line from Google, and we got the standard version. I'm sure the Nexus 5 launcher will hit the play store soon though and then we can all officially have the full enhanced version of KitKat.
i just had a kit-kat and i am already jolly and a bit fatter.

Nope. I had a GS4 for a week, before it was returned for my One.
Installing the GEL apk from the dozens of links on xda will fix all the things that you listed. The new Nova beta also has all these features except the "Okay Google" feature.
Thanks for suggesting the GEL.apk going to do it right now.
I guess people should look up the video to when the Nexus 5 was announced......there were "exclusive" features for that phone. If you question the definition of exclusive, then place your phones down and pick up a dictionary.

Android Marshmallow Discussion

Wow, so really when did T-Mobile fall way behind Verizon as the worst carrier for getting out updates? It used to be Verizon was far worse then all the carriers for getting out updates. I wish Sammy would just make there phones with Vanilla Android and the Spen and features work on those Kernels. Imagine CM with a working Spen suit?
How soon can we expect to see custom Marshmallow ROMs for our devices based on the ASOP Nexus Marshmallow ROMs?
So another 6ish months before we can hope to have an update. Skipping the one we know works. Hopefully Marshmallow isn't nearly as bad as when lollipop 5.0 landed. T-mobile is just about worthless for updates.

lol I feel your pain. I feel that way. But I'm actually one of those guys that hates battery drains and such so i never ever take a major update untill its been out awhile and i know there aren't issues. That's why I'm still on 4.4.4 running Hyperdrive RLS3 cause 5.0.1 i constantly hear the battery is noticeably worse on 5.0.1 then Kit Kat.
So Updates aren't crazy important to me, it's easy for me to just sit back and wait.

BaHumBug! We, Tmobile customers, should have already learned the lesson by now that this only means a 6-7 month wait for 6.0 (possible bugs too) and most will move on to different phones/carriers by then. I love my Note 4, I think it is still a great overall phone but Tmobile sucks with updates.
Also can't wait for those that will come to this thread lets say about 2-3 months from now that will ask "so did 6.0 come out yet?" or "Any news on 6.0?".
If this article is to be believed, there seems to be a certain Note 4 missing from development by Samsung....
I'll give you a hint... It starts with a T and ends with a Mobile.

I just spoke with a Google rep over live chat and asked about the factory image being posted for the Shamu. Well...... Like all live chat reps do, they beat around the bush like crazy, tell you modified Android can't be supported because they can't guarantee stability (even though this wasn't the topic at all!) And then told me the update will come as OTA (which we already knew!) And then after asking the same question enough times, he gives me a link to the factory images (which again, we all know about!) So I just ended the chat. No answers to be had lol
