Issue while enabling/disabling private mode - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I try to enable private mode on my Samsung S5 it asks for the finger print to enable. I get a slight vibration about the match confirmation. But waiting for more than 10 minutes it doesn't activate. Only thing I'm left to do is to reboot my phone and then it works. But again after few hours it does behave the same. I'm fed up of constantly rebooting.
Sometimes i just can't use the private mode function as if the function itself is disabled (the enable/disable toggle is grey in color rather white).
So after rebooting, I can enable private mode (and now i do not turn it off). But somehow it manages to turn it off by itself and when i try to tap on the private mode quick toggle by notifications window I see this, "Unable to disable private mode while moving items to private", when actually nothing is being transferred.
Only after the reboot it works. Am I have to reboot constantly for such things to work?

This is my second thread which went unanswered after registering! Well okay!

If anyone comes across same issue can go to Service center directly. Nothing you can do yourself as i tried every possible thing from my side. Anyways they re-installed the firmware and the issue has gone.

Why didn't you just flash the firmware yourself? Or factory reset

I'm a newbie and wanted help before going to service centre. But no one replied and thus couldn't do it myself!
As far as factory reset is concerned I had done that already but still it persisted.

No-one would have given you any extra info than is already here in the S5 forums, a simple case of reading would have saved you time and effort taking it to the service centre
It literally takes less than 5 minutes to flash a stock ROM, with about 2 clicks

Your best bet would be flashing a stock firmware, and report back if it has fixed your problem.

One question, Is flashing stock rom downloaded from sammobile or similar over kies/smartswitch the same as the service centre guys do?

[Q] GPS problem

Looked to the best of my searching abilities, and prob just missed something. However, is anyone else having a problem with the GPS? In particular, when I start an app, any app, that requires GPS, I have to turn the already on GPS off, then back on. Otherwise, even though its marked as on, the apps will say 'searching for gps'. Now, after I turn it off then back on, the apps immediately get a lock and operate as normal. I didn't spend much time with the phone before rooting it and have no idea if the problem existed before hand. Maybe I have a faulty phone? Or maybe I should flash back to stock?
If no one else is experiencing this prob, I'm thinking I should return the phone. Just need to learn how to revert back to stock with no one the wiser.

I've never had that issue. But i used GPS Status to clean the gps data and download more accurate one. It makes the signal stronger I think or we'll at least it seems to grab more accurate readings.
If you download it from the app store. Hit the menu button > tools > Manage A-GPS State > Reset. Then go back in and hit download.

Just tried mine again. Works as it should. I have GPS on all the time and when I go to map or navigation, it instantly shows my location and is ready to navigate.
The issue you are describing was common on my HTC Evo 4G LTE, though. That was pretty much the scenario anytime I wanted to use the GPS apps.
I use them on all my phones. It may connect good but I noticed on like navigation app it would bounce from spot to spot I was driving to. But when I use that gps status it smooths it out for me so it's smooth and moves as I do.

Found the program and tried what you suggested. However, I again had to turn the gps off then back on for even that app to work. I am going to figure out how to flash back to stock and try it again, then decide if i need to return the phone.

some of this could depend on the area you are in. downtown with skyscrapers = less accurate gps. Or at least in my experience. No matter what phone I have had.
Just a quick update:
Figured I had nothing to lose by trying one of the new roms that are out before I returned it. After flashing I went back to test the apps and they now work without a hitch. So, seems there was simply a software glitch preventing apps from seeing that the gps was already on and ready. I'm just relieved not to have to go through the extra steps to get navigation up and running!

Glad this worked. what rom did you use? I am on uscc and have the same gps issue where you need to toggle it off then on and instant lock. Maybe we can extract the gps part and make a zip that updates just that part.

I have exactly the same issue with the stock rom of my Galaxy S4 (i9505). Mine is not rooted, just standard. After having tried many things, I found the same workaround to switch off and on the GPS to have the navigation software working. This issue occurs with all software making use of the GPS signal.

i just unrooted my phone back to stock MDC did a factory reset.. rebooted now my GPS wont work.. location error.. failed location current location? i tried everything turn data on off.. wifi on off.. reboot ect..?? please help.. thanks

Problem resurfaced even on new rom, so returned to the store for a replacement, no problems since.

I found the culprit: After uninstalling Yahoo Weather, the GPS works just fine!!

WiFi hangs and drops

I'm currently having a problem with my S4 that is driving me mad.
Ever since I got the phone I've had a bit of a problem with the WiFi connection. I've flashed a few kernels and some seems to help the problem more than others but it's still there.
What happens is the phone connects to WiFi no problems. Then maybe after a few minutes of use the phone won't give me any data. If I search a Web page it just hangs and then says unable to display web page. I then have to knock the WiFi off and back and and it cures the problem temporarily.
Sometimes the WiFi connection can be fine and last a few hours without hanging. Other times it can last a few minutes. The WiFi icon always remains on the screen and the arrows act as if data is getting processed but nothing ever happens. The odd time it will also kick itself off the WiFi and reconnect.
It's driving me mad having to constantly knock it on and off. I'm missing WhatsApp messages for hours because of it also.
Is it a common problem? If not the phone
is still under warranty so I will have to send it back but then that's me phone less for god knows how long
Any help would be great.

its a fix that sorted out my wifi problems
I think you should revert back to the latest stock and reset your modem. There might be some fancy settings in your modem software that need to be turned off. I read that somewhere but can't remember which ones. Just search on here.:cyclops:

Well I tried the WiFi fix but that hasn't cured my problem. Today I will flash to stock rom and then re-root and see if that makes a difference. If not its off for repair under warranty and the old Nokia 8210 will be coming out of retirement for a few days lol

Hi jehbrian.
I've never heard of this fix but I'm willing to give it a go (whats the worst that can happen lol).
Done the above and indeed you get to a point where Wifi power saving mode is on. I've knocked it off and will see how I get on in the next couple of days. It does make sense that the power saving mode could be killing the Wifi every now and again.

Surely there must be something else that can compensate for this loss if it means the Wifi actually works. GPS? Bluetooth? Screen brightness?
My phone is on my dock so can't verify the loss of battery.

I've never noticed the battery drain... besides, S4's battery life is bad anyway.

Wi-Fi won't turn on after phone sleeps, sometimes

Hi!
My n9005 works perfectly fine, but SOMETIMES in standby when I wake the phone up, I notice Wi-Fi is turned off, while it previous it was on.
When I try to move the knob thing to turn on Wi-Fi it just does the animation and stays like it's trying to turn it on, but doesn't.
I have to restart the phone every time to make Wi-Fi work again.
This doesn't happen a lot of the time, but it's annoying.
Is this a common thing? What could I do to fix it?

Open wifi menu and go to option.
then go to advanced, there is and option "keep wifi on during sleep". Make sure it says "always on"
The problem isn't that.
That's how it is by default.
I would be able to turn wifi on after it turned off if that was the problem.
In my case I need to restart the phone to be able to.

I did a factory reset and Odin flash of the same exact ROM that I had by downloading from Sammobile.
The problem is so random and seems to only happen when the phone sleeps or is charging. Sometimes it works for a few days, sometimes it will happen, no WiFi until a restart.
EDIT:
Maybe I should download another ROM from sammobile and try that?

CSC:N9005MAXGBOK1) atm, I bought the Note 3 used and it had that. But I live in Serbia, maybe I should try the Serbian one in example for my carrier?
The WiFi problem is just annoying at most, it doesn't happen often, but I shouldn't have to restart the phone to have WiFi.

Ive found people that the wifi icon is grayed out.
Thats not the issue here.
Please help me out here. Tomorrow Ill be opening up the phone with a friend to check for water damage if any. Since I bought it used.

For anyone interested, I solved my problem on my own.
Enter *#0011#, press menu key, tap on WiFi tab, tap on the power saving button so it's off.
I didn't experience the same issue ever again.

Is there any good Anti-Theft? (Does Cerberus to system app make any sense?)

my Lenovo P2 recently got stolen and now that I've ordered a used S8 I am looking into ways to protect against theft. And frankly I don't see a good way.
The most obvious thing a thief will do is to shut down the phone and throw away the sim card, so I looked for ways to defend against that. You can't deactivate the force shutdown by holding the power button for 10 sec, which sucks, but the Cerberus app can do a pretend shutdown, which is at least something.
But what about removing the sim card? Without sim card there is no internet connection and therefore no tracking app will work. And once there is no tracking the thief has all the time in the world to find a way to reset your phone and bypass SFR. Well, nothing you can do about that.
But can you defend against a factory reset? Make Cerberus a system app and it works even after a reset! Sounds great, I thought! BUT, in order to do just that you have to root your phone, meaning unlocking the bootloader, meaning the thief can just flash your entire phone through the bootloader. He might not, but he can. Making all the work in rooting and preparing pretty useless if it's not even secure.
So I'm asking, is there any way to secure against theft? I have the idea of making the phone ring when it looses connection to my bluetooth headphones, but that can backfire so easily...
I'm open for any ideas. Hope there is something out there I've missed.

1. You have to input pattern/password if you would like to power off the device locked.
2. As far from what I've seen with my friend's S7 Edge, you will need to sign in with your google account if you forced factory reset it in recovery not sure about odin flashing.
3. I'm not sure about this but as long as Location is turned on it can still be tracked even without an internet connection. Again, I'm not sure but I think iPhones have this feature so maybe it can be done on Android too.

Regarding shutting down my s8 by holding the power button, Cerberus just does the fake shutdown screen off thing. Also there's an option in Cerberus to disable the power menu when on the lockscreen, which I have enabled. I think the only way to actually shut down my s8 from the lockscreen is for the battery to die on it's own
As for the data and sim card, the app recognizes the original sim card. So if someone puts in a different sim card, the app sends a notification to your email or spouses phone. I think it sends location data too but I'm not sure. And data is accessed thru any sim card. My phone WiFi is set to on all the time anyways so Cerberus will look for any open network and communicate thru that. However, the pull down menu is still accessible in the lockscreen. But on the s8, there's a setting to lock the pulldown menu buttons so u wanna make sure that's turned on.
And for defending against hard resets, like i mentioned earlier the phones power menu is blocked, so they won't be able to start the process until the battery dies by itself

between cerebrus stock security factory reset protection and such you can locate and such but best wepon is imei
Write it down if all else fails report the imei to your carrier and have it blacklisted also....
I also use my gear s2 watch as the have a find phone/watch setup too.In the end A thief will do what it takes and can bypass most if not all security implemented by google or others best you can do is take all the precautions and be ready to pounce if its gone....

Still, IMHO, Cerberus is well worth the cost.
Protect against Flash
Since you have been using it by sometime do you have any protection agains flashing a new ROM ? Did you make a new partition or something ? Is there a tutorial ?

The only protection is the fake shutdown.
Thief thinks he shut down the phone meanwhile it's recording video.
Installing is straight forward. No partitioning required.

LG-H918 - lg ims has stopped

I've had my LG V20 for over a year now... it has been working fine until this morning, when I've started getting a popup saying "lg ims has stopped", about every 10 seconds.
I've searched around Google for a solution to this, but cannot execute any of the solutions that they mention...
1. I have not installed any new apps on my phone in weeks now, so that's not the issue.
2. Many solutions say to call 277634#*# to open a config menu, then open 'IMS Settings' on this menu and change 'IP Version' to IPV4...
Unfortunately, while I can get to the config menu, if I open 'IMS Settings' menu, this error pops up, and switches me back to the previous menu...
This is nuts!!! Is there any way to actually fix this, other than factory reset, which I *really* don't want to do!!!!
Please Help??
I have the exact same problem. I just did a factory reset. Once I got to the part about adding recommended apps, the darn "Unfortunately, LG IMS has stopped" message started popping up again. So, from my experience, doing the factory reset does not help eliminate this problem. Now trying to figure out what to try next.

I'm wondering if LG has actually discontinued some service that the phone relies on??
I'm thinking of getting another V20 from ebay, because I *really* love this phone!! But I don't want to end up with another phone having the same issue...

A couple hours ago. As you have probably seen, the problem is not new. Would love to know why both of us were affected today.
I'm currently trying variations of what I've seen on this page:

Okay, here's an update... I switched back to an old phone, then powered up my V20, and this error no longer occurred... I also was able finally to get to the 'IMS Settings' menu (after dialing 277634#*# as recommended at all sites for this issue)...
I tried each of these settings (recommended by various sources):
> set IP Version to IPV4V6 (default is IPV6V4)
> set IP Version to IPV6
> disable VoLTE
In each of these cases, once I inserted a valid SIM and rebooted, this error message began occurring again.
So my best guess at this point, is that LG has simply disabled something on the V20, and I just won't be able to use it any more, at least with MetroPCS/TMobile...
I replaced my 12 year old wireless access point this a few days ago. Thought maybe the new WAP with Wi-Fi 6 was causing the problem. Put my old WAP back. Reset the phone again. Message started again when I got to loading apps.
Found this video that was posted today about the problem. Already has almost 21k views. One of the commenters says he contacted LG and LG is supposedly working on it and will push out a fix in 24 to 48 hours.

Whoa !! Thanks for the update!! I sure hope this works...
I found this a few minutes ago. I also have a v20 and this worked for me, so hopefully it works for you as well. It says to put into airplane mode, which for me did not stop the pop ups. Removing the sim card works, but once I put it back in, the error occured until I re-followed these steps. So unfortunately, you will just have to put up with the pop-ups while doing this. It's been about 15 minutes and I haven't gotten the message, so it looks like I'm in the clear. Hopefully you will be, too.
Set your LG phone to airplane mode to prevent the error message from popping up over and over.
Head to Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> App info.
Tap the 3-dot menu in the top right corner and enable show system.
Look for com.lge.ims.rcsprovider in the list and tap it.
In the detailed overview for this app, hit the following three buttons in order: Clear cache, clear storage/data, and force stop. (Depending on the Android version on your phone, some of these three options may be found under storage information.)
You may have to repeat step 5 above multiple times for the problem to fix itself.
And the clear data/cache was under storage for me.

Just to save others some trouble, please note that this video, itself, just repeats the same non-working solutions that everyone else suggested, none of which work, including factory reset.
However, the comments *do* appear to have further useful discussions of this subject... so we now can be sure that this is an LG issue... hopefully we'll have a solution in a day or two...

Just as a side note to this post: placing my phone in airplane mode did *not* prevent this message from repeatedly appearing... the only thing that worked was removing the sim card.

Same here. The only problem is that removing the sim card while doing the method that I found was pointless, as once I put the sim card back in, the problem came back. Though once O followed the method with the sim card in, it went away and has stayed away. For now, at least. I assume turning off the phone will reset whatever I did, and I may have to do it again.
Still no fix for this from T-Mobile or LG.

However, the comments *do* appear to have further useful discussions of this subject... so we now can be sure that this is an LG issue... hopefully we'll have a solution in a day or two...

Tap the 3-dot menu in the top right corner and enable show system.
Look for com.lge.ims.rcsprovider in the list and tap it.
In the detailed overview for this app, hit the following three buttons in order: Clear cache, clear storage/data, and force stop. (Depending on the Android version on your phone, some of these three options may be found under storage information.)
You may have to repeat step 5 above multiple times for the problem to fix itself.
And the clear data/cache was under storage for me.

Works for me. I did only once. About 30 minutes, no pop-ups! Thank you.

Well, this *sort of* works with mine... however, every time I reboot the phone, I have to go through this sequence again...
That is not entirely a desirable solution !!
Later note: okay, I didn't read the original post clearly enough... @Arthilios already noted this issue...
Oh well, I can probably live with that!!
Putting the phone in airplane mode renders the phone basically useless. As soon as you turn on Wifi while in airplane mode, the error message pops back up. Can't switch to AT&T either because the T-Mobile's V20 doesn't work on AT&T anymore since AT&T turn off 3G service back in Feb 2022 even though the V20 is VoLTE capable. Another solution is pull the sim card out and just use it like a phone with blacklisted IMEI. LG said they're working on it but I doubt they're gonna push out an update for this 7 year old phone. Maybe they can make an app to take care of this. I think it's time to throw in the towel on LG and get other brands.

I want a phone that I can swap in a charged battery. When I looked at what was available two years ago, I found the V20 was still the best available, IMO. Current phones with that ability were low end models.
