I'm currently on 4.3 with the original bootloader. Is it possible to update to an official touchwiz 4.4 or 5.0 rom and keep the old bootloader?
If no, are there any touchwiz roms modified to work with the old bootloader?
Does CM12 work well with the 4.3 bootloader?
Edit: I have the n9005 (n900x LDU to be exact) version of the Note 3.
You need to post in Q&A section mate but to answer your question no. Bootloaders are compatible with past versions of Android but not future versions. For example: 4.4 Bootloader is compatible witn Android 4.3 but not Android 5.0. Android 5.0 Bootloader is compatible with 4.4 + 4.3 but not Android 6.0 (if it even exists, but as i said, for example) hope this makes sense
P.S welcome to XDA
Are you sure about the backward compatibility? I read in multiple places that people couldn't downgrade to 4.3 because the new bootloader doesn't work with 4.3.
The 5.0 bootloader works fine with 4.3. I've seen and done it myself (I'm a flashaholic).
Do you have the n9005, n900 or some other version of the phone?
I have the N9005 mate.
So these threads are a bunch of baloney?

Yes....i will post screenshots of me on 4.3 if you like?
I believe you, I'm just surprised as there are lots of threads that claim otherwise. Can you post exact steps of how you upgrade and downgrade? Maybe there's something special about the way you do it as others have obviously had problems with downgrading.
Also, can you respond to my other two questions (CM12 and touchwiz based roms that work with the old bootloader)?
Ideally I'd like not to upgrade my bootloader as this n900x (demo unit) that I have reportedly has major issues on new bootloaders (most probably because no new versions of the modem exist).

There is no special way of downgrading or upgrading, its just the normal way.
PS: One thing I should have mentioned, if you wipe before upgrading and all that (that's what I do) and wipe via TWRP and then reboot the phone after wiping via TWRP then the bootloader won't upgrade, at least that's what I think, cause that's what happened to me while I was upgrading from KK to LP, the bootloader wasn't updated because I rebooted the phone from TWRP. So to avoid that you need to turn off the phone (if you are in recovery) and then enter download mode by Vol Down and Power, once again, rebooting to download mode from recovery won't upgrade the bootloader, you need to manually do that by powering off the phone and so on.
Trough Odin, not through a custom recovery? What about my other two questions (CM12 and touchwiz based roms that work with the old bootloader).
No idea about CM12, not in that sort of stuffs.
You will flash the ROM via Odin yes, but my previous comment is only valid if you wipe your phone via recovery before upgrading. I always wipe my phone before upgrading (and this was a big platform upgrade from KK to LP), thus thought about mentioning that.
How can you tell which bootloader you have? I wiped everything via TWRP and then used odin to flash a 5.0 rom.
Not sure what bootloader I have though..
That's the thing, I don't know that either! I guess when you enter bootloader there might be a mention of it, or not, not sure really.
I wouldn't have understood that anyway if I didn't have the WiFi password reset problem with LP. A user then pointed out that my bootloader wasn't updated and thus the WiFi problem was happening, and he was right.

Cm12 works with any bootloader
I know it does. How well it works on the 4.3 bootloader was the question.
can i downgrade from 5.1.1 N910CXXU2COJ5 to any 5.0.1 ?
If Yes , How can i do so please
Why i want to do so , i want to run MIUI
no one knows !
I'm having the same problem here. After the OTA update to COJ5, Odin always fail to flash any ROM before COJ5 (device display the message sw rev.check fail device 2 binary 1). Also, all the root methods that worked on COJ4 stopped working in this new version, always resulting in a infinite bootloop forcing me to reflash COJ5 in Odin. I even went to TWRP and completely wiped my phone (including system) but still coudn't install any previous version (installing the SuperSU through TWRP also results in infinite bootloop now). Did anyone find a solution for this yet? I'm guessing that this won't be a problem for just Galaxy Note 4....

Well, while [5.1.1 COJ4] can be downgraded to 5.0.1, [5.1.1 COJ5] can't. The problem may be exactly the bootloader that cannot be downgraded through ODIN. I don't believe that any common procedure will work for this downgrade. We will likely need a different approach.
I also read in some forum that while Odin won't work anymore, TWRP (or CWM) still will. So this leads to other two questions:
* Is there any place we can download stock roms in recovery format instead of ODIN's?
* If not, is there any way we can convert Stock Roms from ODIN's format to TWRP's?

if that is the case get a backup from your friend or someone with the same model like you and make sure they have a kitkat or 5.0.1 version

@amidsal and @kirbiii, did you try this and get it to work? If so, how did you do it?

Sadly no. I'm still believe that the best (if not the only way) right now is through JTAG.
Excluding direct access to the internal SD Card, the only way to overwrite the protected memory in the device is through the bootloader, which is protected itself.
I did managed to downgrade my note 4 N910U from 5.1.1 to 5.0.1.

I have a Samsung Note 4 (N910C) on 5.1.1 (COJ5) firmware. I have rooted the phone and put a RunningLite custom rom. There is a custom rom that I really like which runs only on 4.4.4 or 5.0.1 bootloader and not 5.1.1. Is there any way to downgrade the bootloader? I read somewhere that the COJ5 bootloader is locked by Samsung and cannot be downgraded? Is there any way to unlock the bootloader? Pls advice. Thanks!
You're not the first one to ask this. I have an SM-N910F (SnapDragon), and these have no problems downgrading. But looking around XDA, I've seen numerous posts saying the N910C (Exynos) can't be downgraded due to the bootloader. Since I don't own one, I can't really verify, but looking at the sheer number of people reporting the same thing... You know

No we cant downgrade

the new security patch update of march in note 4 locks the bootloader completely and prevents downgrading while before the update, the bootloader was unlocked and it was easily downgradable, I've seceded in that too..
now, after the update, the bootloader updates to COJ5 and above depending on areas and countries..
so its simple, any bootloader above that means you cant downgrade and any bootloader below that means its downgradable..
heres the solution,
firstly, you'll have to downgrade your bootloader
heres the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...37&postcount=3
download any bootloader below COJ5 of your current android version and model, that is 5.1.1 i guess..
exctract it and flast with ODIN in "BL" box..
you'll now have an unlocked bootloader..
than factory reset/ wipe data, wipe cache..
next, flash 5.0.1 via ODIN, factory rest again,
than finally flash 4.4.4 for your model and factory reset once more..
boom!!! you're good to go..
hope this helps
P.S: I'm not responsible for any damage, do it on your own risk..

i managed to downgrade it to COH4 and downgrade the firmware to 4.4.4 XSG
you can give it a shot..

I personally haven't tried it but i wanted to downgrade for better battery life. I'm not sure if mnanabhai21's method is safe and tested by others. And in general, I'm scared to tweak samsung devices :crying:
5.0.1 for me was terrible. Last time i remember, battery was good(?) but i had constantly had horrible performance in games/benchmarks. The one right b4 COJ5 had good battery life and performance for me.
the CSC is the problem, thats why Odin always says FAILED!!! at the end .. when he wanna flash the Hidden file.
Today i was downgrading from MM to KK.. just take latest LL firmware from your region (csc .. in my case DBT), flash the thing and than if you wanna KK do the same princip, but with same csc

I Found a way to unlock the bootloader on coj5 through samsung kies
1: open samsung kies 3 and choose the 4th option in the up left side (tools) an then choose the 2nd option (firmware upgrade and iniciation)
2: in the new window introduce the phone model (SM-N910C/F/A...etc) click ok, now introduce the S/N: (which you can find in the battery´s place and for do that you´ll have to remove the battery from your phone and search the S/N on it ) once you have done introduce it such as it is, click ok, follow the steps put your phone into downloading mode and wait until it finishes ... and thats all enjoy :silly:
This is just a safe upgrade to the latest CQA1 firmware for the SM-N910V. If you are already on 6.0 with an unlocked bootloader you can flash this to update. It will not lock your bootloader or overwrite your custom recovery. I slightly debloated it but other than that it's completely stock and still odexed.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Boot to recovery and do a complete wipe (everything except your internal and external sd card)
- Power off device and pull battery for at least 3 seconds
- Boot into Download mode and connect phone to your computer
-Start Odin and place the tar file in the AP slot
-Once Odin says it's ready just press start and let it do it's thing
CQA1 FIRMWARE DOWNLOAD
If you would like to run stock you can download and flash SuperSu for root and also Busybox by Osmosis
Thanks will try later!

No buddy there isn't. The issues you'll have will vary when trying to upgrade the firmware without updating the bootloader. Mostly wifi related and brightness issues. All of the safe upgrades remove the aboot so it wouldn't update your bootloader.

I just can't believe there is not an easier way to get to Marshmallow-Marshmallow since the bootloader is unlocked.

Yes . doesn't contain aboot :victory: but the bootloader didn't change it isn't necessary or particularly useful unless you wanted to builds a touchwiz based ROM and wanted to use the most recent base .

And no lol if you took the safe upgrade from 5.1.1 to 6.0.1 (via the lollipop ROM on marshmallow toolchain) you are currently on an up to date bootloader it is unneccesarry to repeat the unlock procedure and no this doesn't lock your bootloader . it isn't rooted however you would need to flash that but it is a one and done via twrp . kingroot wasn't needed.

Hello everyone! Been quite a while since I've been on here. I have been on the Kyubi ROM since the BL unlock was achieved on our Note4. IMO, it has been a pretty stellar ROM. Been using it ever since. Now, I have decided to upgrade the device.

My question is can I do this "CQA1 Firmware *safe upgrade* SM-N910V" in the OP without any problems?

No, unfortunately there currently isn't an easier process than the one that is outlined in this thread. I had some different intentions with this firmware when I was putting it together and some personal stuff came up so I just posted it as is but you'll need to update your bootloader or you'll have wifi issues with the 6.0 roms.
It's my understanding, though I haven't tested it personally, that's not the case for the 7.0 aosp roms. From what I've read there's been people running those on the bpa1 bootloader.

"Extract and flash N910VVRU2BPA1_N910VVRU2CPD1_FullFirmware.tar.md5 via Odin
This will make you on Lollipop with Marshmallow bootchain/firmware/modem, which is rootable."
Sorry for the noob like questions. I've just been away too long and I really don't want to screw this up lol. I do appreciate all your help though.

No problem. Yes if you're already unlocked on bpa1 then just go ahead and Odin the firmware you mentioned (N910VVRU2BPA1_N910VVRU2CPD1_FullFirmware.tar.md5). Once you get that booted up then it's just a matter of repeating the same process as before with the LP bootloader. Keep in mind that you won't have wifi when you flash that firmware so you may want to have a copy of kingroot on your internal sdcard ready to go. Then I usually reference this post here on out. There's a couple threads on this subject but I feel like they have some unnecessary steps involved whereas that post really cuts to the meat of it in my opinion.
@kevintm78 Thanks so much. In your opinion, is there really any difference between LP and MM? I really do appreciate your help.

hi. thx, but i did this right (like in the video) many times, and it worked perfectly. now is not working cuz the bootloader was updated, and it won't let me downgrade the firmware anymore. i am still trying to find a way but i don't know if is possible.
i am searching a way to downgrade bootloader and then downgrade the firmware, but i dunno if is possible to downgrade bootloader once it was updated.
i am looking for the same solution. i managed to downgrade to Nougat but cant install custom rom

I have searched the whole web. but, I haven't find the solution to downgrade the bootloader for Binary 6. Well, my phone's OS is dead after upgrading to pie. So, apparently the only way for me and to others who are facing the similar issue is to wait until someone releases Binary 6 combination firmware for SM-G950FD.
Good news: It's easy to get your phone running if your bootloader is not upgraded to binary 6. Cuz, Binary 5 firmwares and combination files are available out there and they are 100% working unless your MB is dead.
Note: I have flashed following stock firmwares successfully through ODIN [INS-G950FXXU6DSK9-20191231094010 and INS-G950FXXS6DTA1-20200120123810] yet no luck. Can't boot the OS. Tried to root the phone, cant able to flash the custom recovery. Nothing just works.
Someone, please tag me if ever finds U6 combination file. That's the only hope to bring back my phone to life.
