Late to the lollipop party - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long time lurker... here goes my first post, be gentle!
I bought my s5 and rooted it a long time ago but I haven't kept up it up to date. I'm still on 4.4.2 and I think it is finally time to try 5.0
Since I'm so out of date, I want to make sure I update my phone without bricking it or losing xposed framework.
My current device's system info:
Andriod Version: 4.4.2
Build: ANCG
Kernal: 3.4.0-964333
Bootloader: G900VVRU1ANCG
Rooted
Stock ROM
Safestrap NOT installed
Xposed framework installed with these modules:
Greenify
Xprivacy
Wanam Xposed
Downloads 2SD
With such an out of date phone, is it safe to just follow the instructions in this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...w-to-update-to-g900voe1-5-0-keeproot-t3149784
Are there any known issues on Lollipop with xposed or any of the modules I use?
I think lollipop allows apps to access the SD card again, so I won't need the downloads 2SD module anymore, right?
I have read mixed reports of Xprivacy working on 5.0, if there is anyone using it on the Verizon S5, how's it working for you?
Thanks!

If you decide to go to lollipop any thing over bod5 cannot be rooted there are some decent roms that are flashable
roms via safestrap.

But why is rooted bod5 lollipop bad? Besides not being able to upgrade to newer versions of lollipop, did you have a bad experience with bod5?
I'm ok with not being able to upgrade further. I stayed with 4.4.2 for a long time, I have no problem staying on bod5 for awhile.. Unless there are other good reasons why lollipop Itself is not worth upgrading to.

Bog5 is the latest now I guess it was to fix stage fright but you could choose the one to your liking not much development for bod5 anymore.

You can install rooted OG5 roms. I'm running a stock deodexed OG5 build (rooted) and it's pretty smooth.
With such an out of date phone, is it safe to just follow the instructions in this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/veri...proot-t3149784
If you want xposed on OG5, no. It needs a deodexed rom and that OG5 is odexed. You can use this one if you want xposed on OG5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/development/vzwstock-based-tw-rom-t3178953
Are there any known issues on Lollipop with xposed or any of the modules I use?
Xposed runs but it needs a special version (just do a google search for samsung xposed lollipop). Whenever I run greenify on xposed it causes bootloops for me, but I think it might work fine for some people. Wanam xposed has a special version for lollipop so make sure to switch to that.
I think lollipop allows apps to access the SD card again, so I won't need the downloads 2SD module anymore, right?
I don't think you need it, but when you install check to see if it works. You can always downgrade.
I have read mixed reports of Xprivacy working on 5.0, if there is anyone using it on the Verizon S5, how's it working for you?
It worked for me when I ran it a few months ago, but if the reports are mixed take my success with a grain of salt.

Thank you for actually answering my questions!!
I will attempt OG5 using a deodexed version so I can install the samsung lollipop xposed. Hope I don't screw it up :-/ I've rooted and played around with a few phones before with no problems, but the last time I messed with a phone was over a year ago so I'm pretty rusty.
cheers!
edit: To use the deodexed version of OG5, did you use the muniz_ri method with FireFlash and just replace the muniz_ri ROM with the deodexed ROM? Or did you follow the instructions in this thread? Or something completly different?
Btw I'm still on 4.4.2 NCG but I have installed SS

Since you are at NCG already I think you can start with rooted odex stock. You should flash muniz_ri rooted odex stock with flashfire, it ll full wipe for default also. After that you 100% can flash any G900V lollipop rom you want with flashfire or safestrap, I choosed FF for myself. I am not sure, maybe you can flash deodex right away, but after some lurked and questions I personally did as described in first sentence. Don't forget to do backup, samsung for example. I was in your position not so much time ago.

i second that lollipop is terrible. go to 4.4.4 and stay. look in page 2 or 3 of android development for ricks rom and flash that, its the best kitkat rom and it just work way better than 5.0

[Q] Rooting and ROMS

I am really new to this, so I apologize if I seem ignorant. Last time I went down this road, I didn't do my research and accidentally messed up the stock recovery. I am now unrooted and running the following:
AT&T Galaxy S4
Android 4.4.2
Build: KOT49H.I337UCUFNC1
Here's what I want to do:
Root my device
Install SafeStrap recovery (I don't know if this is still compatible since the KitKat update)
Use SafeStrap to run a custom ROM that's closer to stock android. Maybe CM or something AOSP based. Like I said, I don't know much about this.
Please let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree. I'm just getting really tired of TouchWiz. Up until now I've just been sideloading Google Now Launcher and some other stock apps like the Clock and Calculator. Once again, I apologize for my ignorance - I'm still working on learning more about this. Thanks in advance!

I don't know if you went down this road before since your questions don't show.
1. You can't install custom recoveries or roms on the build you have.
2. You can only downgrade to Mk2 to root since it's imposible to root on your present build.
On the general section there are a few threads that guide you to downgrade ,root, and flash compatible roms.

Not gonna happen, at least for now. The best you could do is PurifieD which completely trashes TouchWiz's theme. You'd also have to follow the steps here to get root on NC1. I'd advise against taking the bootloader but I believe you already have it if you took NC1 OTA. Then you could flash PurifieD over your stock slot in Safestrap 3.72.
Basically:
Root via downgrading to MK2
Flash rooted NC1 (no BL)
Install and boot into Safestrap 3.72, flash PurifieD (wipe not necessary)
If you wish to keep Knox happy with 0x0, do not let PurifieD modify the kernel during the Aroma installer
Flash an i337 build.prop in order to get 4G LTE working again (you have service without this, but this lets you access LTE again) (you can find this here!)
Flash the WiFi module in order to get wifi working again (WiFi will NOT work unless you flash this) (you can find this here!)
(Optional, I had to do this as I had issues with keeping root on PurifieD, though you might not!) Flash SuperSU again (you can find this here!
Feel free to ask for more help if anything was not clear!

just rooted now what

Just got my s5 and rooted it
I got the native tether going but was wondering what other goodies that im not aware of
is there of list of top ten things to do once rooted
Yeah, personally I'd read up up on safestrap and flash the alliance rom or stay stock and go the xposed route....or both.
What root method did you use? I thought the latest OTA patched the kernel?

Xposed on Lollipop? Very confused. Does it work?

So I stayed away from Lollipop due to silent mode being gone. Finally updated and sure enough hate the sounds modes. I saw there was an exposed module to bring back KitKat silent mode.
Been doing tons of research on this forum and other websites and can't find a clear answer. Does exposed work on the Verizon S5 on Lollipop?
Some sites say at first it didn't but it was then updated..then other sites say even the update won't work on touchwiz ROMS? Idk if that just means stock VZW ROMS or even custom touchwiz ROMS?? Very confusing
If anyone knows please let me know. Also if it WILL work are there instructions for this phone specifically. Any Xposed instructions I find mention booting to a customer recovery...and then I remembered hearing that safestrap doesn't work on Lollipop so idk

I've done many clean install of kitkat previously.. Every time I switch roms so I know my phone is always running the best it can. Did the same when installing lollipop last night..full charge over night and man is this battery life bad compared to kit kat..didn't use my phone much this morning and just used it for an hour or so now and I'm at 60%

Xposed afaik currently unofficially works with certain deodexed touchwiz roms
i'm using this version of xposed and it works fine. You do need to use FlashFire to flash the zip though give it a try just install the app then flash the zip.

Yes. Samsung has done some of their own tinkering with ART on lollipop which makes Xposed cause a bootloop. The unofficial version only works on Deodexed versions.
@aholeinthewor1d
If you want to use Xposed on TW Lollipop, you can use this ROM. Then you can go here to install Xposed.
Also, Safestrap DOES work on Lollipop, you just have to use a KitKat kernel to access it. This app/thread makes accessing Safestrap on Lollipop extremely easy. No need for a computer.

What Custom Recovery to use w/ Lollipop 5.0.1 Rooted

I rooted my S4 ATT SGH-I337 yesterday with Kingroot while already having Lollipop 5.0.1. I then downloaded Flashify & Flashed ClockworkMod Recovery. Restarted my phone to goto recovery and I got a yellow triangle saying this phone has software unauthorized by att.
What Custom Recovery can I use and where can I find the latest version? Will TWRP work and also I've heard of something called Philz?
Oh and does bootloader have anything to do with this because when I rooted my S3 I never even knew or heard of bootloader.
Thanks in Advance

You will not be able to use a custom recovery because your bootloader is locked with no means of unlocking it or downgrading to an unlocked one. You have 2 tools that you can use, currently in lollipop. One is flashfire beta. If you ever purchased mobile Odin, you will be upgraded to the paid version for free. The other is safestrap. Safestrap isn't updated for lollipop but there is a workaround. Since you rooted with Kingroot, I'd suggest getting flashfire beta and then use it to flash the rooted 0C3 zip found in the OP of this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-update-to-i337oc3-5-0-1-keeproot-t3075814
The reason is that Kingroot seems shady and installs other crapware. Also, if you try to update to 0C4, it will fail with the Kingroot rooted lollipop. It won't with Muniz' method. Well, at least I know it won't with the stock rooted one. I'm still unsure if the deodexed one will cause the update to fail.
Snapping along on stock rooted 0C4 I337, wishing for some good up to date lollipop ROM's to throw into flashfire
I have Flashfire Pro and SuperSU

My question is what is 0C3? and what is 0C4?
I have the paid version of Flashfire beta
The reason I want a custom recovery is so i can make a backup of my phone and then flash a rom preferably Cyanogen Mod if they have it yet. I hate this touchwiz. But I wanna make a backup like i was able to wish Clockwork mod. Is FlashFire capable of making a complete backup? I see the Backup option but have no clue which to choose and or what it is backing up??????

OC3 is the original Lollipop distribution for the AT&T I337. OC4 is the patch update which is assumed to have corrected the stagefright bug.
I don't have the phone, so I don't use flashfire, but I understand that you can do most everything with it that you can do with CWM or TWRP.
The bootloader is locked, and you will not be able to install a custom recovery. You will also not be able to install a custom kernel, so no AOSP based roms can be installed either. You're stuck with Touchwiz based roms. Period.

No it won't. Only safestrap will work with the nc1 work around. Flashfire is great until you want to flash a rom with an aroma installer, then safestrap is the only option.
Can't upgrade to OC4
Hey, I have updated to Lollipop using Muniz's method back in April. You said that the udate should work with Muniz's installation. It is not working for me. Are you aware of this? I too have a locked bootloader, and am stuck with the Safestrap like many others.
Thanks,

Have you changed anything since the update? If you've unistalled or frozen any apps, or made any other change to the rom, the update will fail. It does work with the deodexed version of the rom also, that's what I updated with.

verizon S5 with BOg5 and lollipop

I bought a new/ used S5 (to replace my rooted S3) and had hoped to root it as well. Towel root made rooting very easy back then (for my S3) and now as I read the threads with people having the same S5 config as mine, there seems to be no way to root......not even by downgrading to 4.4. Is this correct ?
Being new to this, I am a bit confused about the other custom ROMs being discussed. Does my S5 need to be rooted to install a custom ROM ?
Thanks much

Correct, it's been said over and over in this forum. If you are on BOG5 you cannot root or downgrade. And yes, you must be rooted to run a custom ROM.

You need to flash the NI2 kernel forest, then reboot. This should get you into SS. Look for NI2flasher.apk
You will also need to flash your build kernel (OG5) BEFORE you exit SS.
