Just asking on here if anyone else is having this issue. While playing locally stored music on Play Music I seem to be getting constant data usage, the amount of data ranges from 50 to 120kB/s on both upload and download. I have Play Music set to "Downloaded only" It can be seen in this screenshot and it does not go away until I fully stop and exit Play Music. Any thoughts?
It could be something else that is using your data. I personally use opera max which tells me when and how much data apps use and gives me the option to completely disable an apps ability to access data. Of course opera max is for compression but it doesn't have to be used that way. I have the compression disabled on WiFi because I have fast Internet.

That's what I thought as well but it stops the moment I exit Play Music, its so odd. I'll have to look further into it, I can't seem to find anything about it when I search for related problems.

I like to restrict background data but my phone likes to ignore my request according to the app 'My Data', always using a little- less than 1k on average per couple of hours, sometime more
Does restrict background data really work on the s4 ?, I know my s2 had no data leakage but it seems my s4 is leaking data.
Anyone else having similar issues?
I like to turn background off to save battery, and I should be in control of what my phone is doing.

IF you will disable the background data, then you willn't be able to use the Data services.

No I haven't turned data off but have restricted background data through; settings> connections> data usage> menu key >restrict background data..
On my s2 this setting killed all background/secretly used data. On the s4 it is leaving some open connections and my phone is connecting to google servers -OS Services, Android system, Google play services and Nearby services.
Is it just my phone or are google spying on users permanently !.
Did you try disabling auto-sync?

All syncs are disabled, no auto update apps, no data should be leaking. This is from the last hour, hardly any at all but its there.
I know I shouldn't be worried and am not really but restricting data should mean exactly that- no data transmitted or received !

I would like to restrict all apps but Whatsapp to be working in background. Just like the experia z power saving mode, it restricts all but the ones you chose. I have unlimited data plan but I don't have unlimited battery
Is there a mod or an app for this ?

Maybe Greenify can help you...
/m
Root your device and install Android firewall applications (there's no shortage of those on the Play store) and restrict which apps access data over wi-fi or cellular network or both and which ones don't. I have done that and apps only consume data when I want them too. Have other apps like Greenify too.
hi guys, I always see Media > DownloadService in running apps.. why it is running all the time? and, being running all the time, is it supposed to drain my battery faster?
I have always lived with that, but if it drains my battery faster I would like to get rid of it..
EDIT: it seems to me it is related to GMAIL.. in fact, after a reinstall, download service process was not there until I started gmail for the first time.. now it is always there again..
can you guys using gmail confirm you have media download service always running?
and people who has not gmail installed can confirm they don't see that process always running? thanks!

hi guys, just a question.. is that normal that I always see maps in running apps? I use maps once per month or even less, so why it should be running all the time? (maps > PrefetcherService)
and, being running all the time, is it supposed to drain my battery faster?
I have always lived with that, but if it drains my battery faster I would like to get rid of it..
the same happens also for "media" (media > DownlodService..... what is that? can I remove it?) and google play music (MusicPlaybackService)
it is really annoying for me to see them always running even when I am not using them....
any suggestion? thanks in advance!!

It happens with me too. I used Greenify and it stopped appearing until the 4.1.6 play store update. Now maps opens automatically almost every 2 minutes. You might not get a significant change in battery life. You can remove google play music though. I don't know about the media download service, might be related to browser or google play music (I recommend not removing it).
thanks for the answer. I tried greenify too and it seems to correctly remove maps here.. (I too have play store 4.1.6, will update to 4.1.10 in a short time btw )
about play music.. I use it, so I can't remove it! btw I greenified it too, so it shouldn't bother anymore
so the only pending problems are media service and also play store (pendingnotification service) that is appearing sometimes in running apps.. unfortunately they are system apps so I can not greenify them
The pendingnotification service might have appeared because of the option to notify you of an update. And yes, the pro version has that feature of hibernating system apps (but its experimental) and god knows what might happen if you do.
of course I disabled the notification and auto update via WiFi options and rebooted but the service kept appearing in running apps sometimes..
as x the media running service, it seems I fixed it removing mediauploader.apk it has not appeared again so far after removing that package!
so all seems good now thanks all!

EDIT: media downloadservice is back again so it was not related to mediauploader... what the hell can be that??
it seems to me it appeared after running gmail for the first time.. but I will have to confirm that after some more investigations..
after some more attempts, i found out the process: media > DownlodService is related to both gapps and Downloadprovider.apk
if I remove Downloadprovider.apk, that process doesn't appear anymore, but I get gapps FC's (and very probably will not be possible to download anymore things from the browser and/or play store)
so in conclusion it seems to me we have to live with that process running, and that is not possible to really get rid of it safely..
Yup, made that mistake of deleting Downloadservice.apk... Drove me nuts with FCs
so nobody could get rid of that process? you too have it always running?

:silly: Strangely, no, its not always running for me.
It seems to run when I download something in a browser and then disappears after 15 minutes or so
after a reinstall it seems to me it is related to gmail.. in fact download service process was not there until I started gmail for the first time.. now it is always there again..

thanks
it seems to me after I installed latest maps 7.x the media > download process is not appearing anymore in running processes.. maybe it was related to sh*tty maps??? :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:
I've removed the GooglePlayservices.apk from my phone and not one of the Google apps has lost functionality. What is it used for?
A message comes up in YouTube when I first open it after wiping cache saying I need GooglePlayservices.apk or it won't work but I dismiss it and it works fine.
Also Google search bar says it needs it to work...... It doesn't.
Anyone know what it says ACTUALLY used for?

Hi There,
Google Play services is used to update Google apps and apps from Google Play. This app gives you access to Google Settings and helps apps speed up offline searches. So this is basically the gateway between you're apps and google play store. Most off the apps we install uses this app to connect to the play store to check for their updates. If not found the apps (especially google apps) may result in an error or FC.
It doesn't take up that much space or resources. So you may as well keep it.
Hope that helped
He can't keep it. He's deleted it. Ha.
I've disables this app because even if it does not take a lot of space, it is running in background and consuming RAM, CPU and internet data.
Everything works fine without it.

I can still see updates available for apps in Google Play without googleplayservices though...........So I don't think you're correct about apps using it to check for updates, they all still work the same.
I've never had one force close since removing it and I can update all my Google apps perfectly fine.
That's why I'm asking, it seems like a pointless app.
It just runs in the background using up RAM and battery.
The processor overhead of looking for it and generating errors and going to the play store may use more battery. Not 100 percent sure though. I'll check. Seems similar to deleting cache /killing a thread takes more to rebuild than leave alone.

When am accessing Settings -> Utilities -> Quick Launch, the OS is redirecting me to the main Settings page. After a couple of repeated attempts, the app altogether crashes and I get a prompt which says "Settings keeps stopping".
I'm not really sure if this is something which is OS related, or what. Has anyone else also been facing something like this? And how is it supposed to be addressed?

It worked. Thanks. Though I see in the quick launch option, the browser is being picked as Google Chrome by default, cant i change it?
So it looks like there are many people having issues with the battery optimization feature, which lets me guess oneplus is already aware of the problem. My question is if there is a way to disable the optimization completely for now until oneplus has sorted things out.
Since the last update it is so aggressive, it kills youtube's connection to my chromecast every few minutes, rendering all control features unuseable as I always have to reconnect before I can do anything. This also makes my wearOS watch unuseable as it also depends on the phone keeping the connections alive.
You can turn off Optimization for YouTube and WearOS
Settings > Apps & Notifications > Special app access
You can turn off optimization for any app, and see the advanced in the 3 dot menu. I had the same problem with my watch, turned off the watch app and helper, now works great. I also turned off messenger, no problems now.

I also would like to know if this is possible in an easy way. I don't want to disable it for 256 apps independently.

Thanks for the reply!
That setting was the first thing I checked and already disabled optimization for the wearOS and cast apps which work fine now. Unfortunately it won't let me disable it for the youtube app as it handles that one as a system app. As long as youtube is not allowed in the background wearOS has nothing to communicate with so I still can't control it.
That's why my next thought was if I can't disable it for system apps maybe there is a way to completely disable it until oneplus has the problem solved. I know that solution would suck but at the moment I am forced to use another phone to use youtube properly which sucks even more imo.

I wonder if the system mover app works on Pie and YouTube? I didn't realize YouTube was a system app since it's from the play store.

I would love to try this but I am unrooted. Youtube should be on the list but it is not, I am guessing that is because it comes preinstalled, the playstore app isn't there as well for example.
I know this is an old thread, but the more I use my new phone, the more I believe this to be the issue with my Gmail app constantly putting my Exchange accounts back to 30 minute fetch. And, I cannot disable battery optimization on Gmail because it's a system app (and I do not want to root). For now, every other day, I have to tell the device that it really is OK for Gmail to remain constantly connected to my Exchange account, that I actually prefer it to be. I've made it to 54 hours with my normal use (OVER 7 HRS S.O.T), not trying to stretch it at all, no battery saving features on whatsoever. So it's safe to say I can afford for Gmail to stay connected with Exchange. The optimization is a bit too aggressive for not allowing system apps to be excluded.
I've also had issues with Google Assistant not reminding me about reminders that are clearly in the list of her reminders, and I think this to be the culprit as well, and again, can't disable it because it's not on the list.

Having exactly same problems with gmail and chrome (html5 push notifications). I am rooted. So I am considering to mark those apps as non system apps, but still not sure if this won't brake future updates or something.
