I downloaded all the file needed to root this phone, but when I download the image file, it ends up being a TGZ file, not an img file. The same thing happened to me while I was trying to download an img file for my lg g3. I'm thinking it has something to do with my comp. Has anyone had this happen to them? If so, what's the work around? Thanks
Wrong forum, search general and qa, there are lots of threads for rooting

If you are getting a tgz file then more than likely its the stock google image which needs to be unzipped and untarred to get the stock flashable images. You could also try the Unified Android Toolkit if you are unsure what to do which can unlock, flash the latest stock image and root it all through the Toolkit.
And yes you should direct questions to the correct thread in the future (Q&A).
Mark.

Hey guys,
my phone just informed me that i could update to 4.2.2 but i am/was running a rooted n4 with stock rom and franco kernel. Franco posted how to properly upgrade to 4.2.2 (flash stock kernel, remove power.xxxx.so (cant remember the name atm)and rename power.xxxx.so.fbak, then reboot and flash zip) but it didnt work for me. i flashed stock kernel and removed the power file + renamed the backup power file but when i try to flash the update.zip im getting an error that looks like this:
assert failed apply_patch_check( /system/lib/hw/power.default.so
Error in /sdcard/update.zip (the .zip i downloaded right from google servers) (status 7)
what could the reason be? id appreciate any help!
and yes....i did look up the other threads that had similar problems but that didnt fix it.
thanks in advance!!
Your "/system/lib/hw/power.xxxxx" file didn't pass the check.
I guess the original one was overwritten with a custom one before being renamed, by a different kernel install.
well i did exactly what was stated in the guide:
1. Download stock kernel from here:
forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2024982
2. Flash it in recovery.
3. Boot into android.
4. Go from root explorer to system/lib/hw and
i) Delete power.msm8960.so
ii) Remove .fkbak extension from power.msm8960.so.fkbak so it looks like, power.msm8960.so
iii) Fix the permissions to rw-r--r--
5. Reboot
i even tried it with the .so file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147427

You need to reflash the system image. That's where it is failing.
Read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Specifically question #1 in the Q&A Section. Then look at Section C.
Try this one.
I got it from a 4.2.1 rom.zip i have had on my desktop for 2 months.

reflash the whole system? well im not a developer but thats surely not the fault. maybe im just using the wrong .so file.
and which Q&A Section are u referring to?
@mean: isnt that exactly the same one as on the other thread?
so heres the exact error msg:
assert failed: apply_patch_check ("system/lib/hw/power.deafault.so", "83172fb........." , "480b896dff..........")
E: Error in /sdcard/...... (the update zip.file)
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

It seems like you are having trouble locating the exact files the need to be replaced. An easy solution is to re-flash the system.img in fastboot. You won't lose any data.
The Q&A section at the bottom of the OP.
any zip flashable version of the system.img around? couldnt find that one
I am having this exact issue. Any luck?

after some trying i got sick of it and just flashed a nandroid backup. but now im facing another issue.... im using wugfresh's kit and usually that kit performs every reboot into bootloader etc. itself but somehow it doesnt :/ i manually have to shut down / start the fastboot mode then it works. but i really dont like that solution.... just looks like smth is broken to me any idea abotu that?
That did the trick
Have same issue as OP'er. Flashing system.img via fastboot did the trick. I was then able to install the OTA no issues. No data loss.

i have the drivers installed on my windows 8 . atleast they were wokring intially when i got the root done on it . i have no clue what to do now !!
Your gonna have to flash the stock image from download mode. Never make changes to system files without doing a nandroid backup.

Read the stickies. They will get you all the info you need. If you are gonna try mods like this I would advise a full custom set up. As what your gonna do is gonna fully wipe your device.

i have downloaded a zip from google's site and its about 300 odd mb. i am assuming i have to extract the the img. files and then do it ? but there are about 3-4 img. files such as :
system
boot
boot loader
radio
recovery
user data
since my phone does get into bootloader can u pls tell me which all img. files i need to flash? do i have to everyone of them?
the thread i linked answers all of your questions
(you really only need to flash the system image but to avoid confusion i would just follow the thread verbatim)

thanks alot i will try doing it... i havent used the command prompt in windows ever before guess its time to learn how to do this..
I know I had a little trouble trying to find these specific recoveries due to goo.im being gone and the TWRP listing for the WIFI ONLY MODEL [SM-P600] not on their site. So I'm posting this to shorten your searches if this is for what you are searching.
All I did was use UNIFIED ANDROID TOOLKIT to flash the recovery via ODIN. But I'm going to attach phil's recovery file from the above toolkit if anyone wants it because it is hard to find for this model. Its the md5 file for use with ODIN. I think your best bet might just be to use the UNIFIED ANDROID TOOLKIT thread link above to do what you want with the device. It allows for flashing of TWRP or PHIL's. The TWRP file is named lt03wifiue so I didn't try it on mine, but it may work. But all that is up to you friend.
Not sure if this is the best place for this thread. I'm sure it will find it's right home.
Thanks.
I had to remove the .md5 extension on Phil's file only to get it to upload to XDA. So add that back.

Hi, can some one give me a guide on the nexus 6 p running mhc19i for no force encrypt, with either a system root that will allow me to remove apps, or a systemless root that I have to go through recovery, and is there a recovery for this version at this time other then the stock one

To decrypt you need to format the userdata partition:
Code:
fastboot format userdata
This will obviously wipe your storage so back it up to your PC first. You will also need to flash a custom kernel that doesn't force encryption first otherwise the stock kernel will just encrypt again when you boot after formatting. You need to use TWRP recovery to flash SuperSU to get root. I have detailed instructions in my guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928

yes, I have looked, but most of them have an aroma installer, I am totally blind so I need one I can flash through fastboot as there is no talkback in aroma or recovery mode. Even the stock no force encrypt would be helpful thanks.

You can flash any of them via fastboot. Extract the boot.img from the zip and flash it:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
You'll just end up with the default settings. Why don't you just flash TWRP? Then you can install it the intended way.
I can flash twrp through fastboot, but I am totally blind and use a screen reader, so I would have to have some one around to use the twrp interface, since there is no speech there, so I need a kernel or modified no force encrypt boot.img I can flash through fastboot

Ahh, I see, that is definitely a difficult situation. So basically as I said, I believe any of them can be flashed via fastboot, but it isn't without its own work. You'd need to download the kernel zip, extract it, place the boot.img into your working directory (your fastboot folder), and use the "fastboot flash boot boot.img" command to flash it to the device. This will give you a kernel that doesn't force encryption, and you could then go on to use an app like Kernel Auditor to tweak the settings once you've booted into Android. How possible is this for you?
well I downloaded fk-r12-anykernel2.zip and unzipped it and there was no boot.img inside, so, can you send me a link to a boot.img for his kernel or the stock with no force encrypt, and am I missing any features by not flashing it through recovery, don't really care, just asking, but if you can please send me a boot.img for the verison I posted earlier in the thread.
Thanks so much for your help

Apologies for the late reply, been a bit busy with my family. It looks like Franco is one of the kernels that doesn't have the boot.img directly inside the zip. There's probably a way to extract it but it's beyond my expertise. I'm in the process of extracting the boot.img from some other popular kernels for you now though, I'll update here once I have some uploaded. It might take a while because my upload speed is woefully slow.

Actually, it turns out none of the kernels have an easily accessible boot.img inside the zip. Things have changed since I last unpacked a kernel. I'll see what I can find out for you.

Only .img & zip can be flashed through twrp.
ZImage doesn't have any extension to be flashed by twrp.
You need to turn Zimage in to boot.img.
On XDA there are several threads teaching how to do it.
