Is this phone worth it over the Nexus 5?

It is not really that more expensive than the Nexus 5 and tbh I'm getting sick of all these giant phones and want something smaller.
1. Do they have that stupid screen protector thing on that previous phones had? My problem is when you took it off previous Xperia phones, there was no anti finger print layer on the glass.
2. The camera sensor is 1/2.3 which apart from some of the Nokia's is the largest sensor out there, is the camera good or is Sony's Software crap?
3. Is it good overall?

1. It does have a screen protector.
2 . The camera is absolutely amazing, but the software on stock 4.3 sucks. It's nearly impossible to record a video in focus for longer than 2 seconds. My camera results have been significantly better on CM 11. I can take pictures from large distances, crop them, and they still look sharp.
3. Overall quality is excellent. I've come from many iterations of Samsung phones and can tell you that not one of them comes even close to the quality on this baby. You will need to get a magnetic charger, however. Opening and closing the USB flap every single day will damage it eventually, no matter how careful you are.

^ "better" is very subjective.
Like you, I am fed up with large phones. I had the GS4 since it came out last year (got it on day 1), and used it for most of the year. I actually quite like the GS4 -- replaceable battery, MicroSD, great camera, great display and "manageable" size. However, I wanted to try more pocketable devices, so:
- First up the Moto X. Great, great design. Awesome feel in hand, more pocketable. Active notifications are just great. Because of the lower-res screen, the non-removable battery is fine - I can usually get through 14-15 hours without a charge so even when I am travelling all day, not a big worry. The two big downsides to the Moto X are (a) crap camera -- although it can take good HDR photos in the right light, it often disappoints (b) lack of MicroSD storage. I'm consistently running at around 23/25GB so it's a bit tight.
- Now trying the z1c. Obviously it solves some of the Moto X shortcomings (camera and MicroSD). It's not perfect. First, the feel in hand is not as good as the Moto X, because it's thicker all around and it's a very square shape (so digs into your palms a bit). Screen on the Moto X (which is AMOLED) is better, but this is subjective. Battery, can't tell yet - think it's around the same as the Moto X (essentially the same size). I also removed the ASF, couldn't stand it. Fingerprints are roughly the same as on the Moto X, that is to say manageable. As of now, I had to downgrade to JB to get a bug-free ROM. Had a few KK issues (mostly sound-related including the alarm).
BTW, I had the Nexus 5 when it first came out, returned it to Google after 1 day. To me the Moto X is a much better overall device than the N5 with the same tradeoffs. The N5 is too big and cut into my hands, never mind it had all kinds of crazy bugs (they may or may not be solved now).
If you want a small, fast device with a very good camera, there isn't much choice right now other than the z1c. Maybe Samsung or HTC will make "proper" minis this year (their 2013 mini's are not high-end devices)???

The screen protector thing killed it for me, they scratch far too easily and once taken off there is no coating on the glass.
Wish Sony stopped doing that.

Just get a good tempered glass protector, they literally feel better than the bare glass (as they have the proper coatings), fingerprints are reduced and touch responsiveness is identical

First thing i do with a phone, before rooting is buying a MATE screen protector for the device. Better haptic even with water on the finger.
The phone itself is more than others. But that is my subjective opinion.
It is the first phone, in dimensions of an iPhone with realy powerfull hardware.
All the Mini-Versions of HTC and Samsung are bad compromisses.
You want the latest and greatest stuff inside?
So buy our 5' or 6' "mega-super-doesnt-fit-in-a-normal-jeans-phones"
I want a hardware with the ability, not to be outdatet, after half a year. And the size of an iPhone.

That`s what i am thinking!

If size and waterproofing is not an issue for you, then probably not worth getting this over Nexus 5. KitKat update has many bugs. Probably too many for many people. But it is still manageable. But I have issues in other departments.
This was my first Xperia in long time. And even though Sony has made a great little device, they still have some way to go in terms of optimising their software for their hardware. I very much liked Z1 Compact. But it does not feel like it is being powered by S800 SoC. That ultimate fluidity is missing from Sony's skin. Nova Launcher fixed the fluidity issue but at the cost of many Sony widgets.
Camera hardware is great. But the Intelligent Auto mode as well as Manual mode even in KitKat are too hit or miss. HDR is also not great (limited to 8MP and much much slower than other high end phones like Nexus 5, Note3 or S4 and even Moto X). Nexus 5 generates better HDR images than Z1 compact from what I have seen so far. Fiddling with each setting manually does give decent pics. Even great at times. Same is case with Auto mode. Some pictures really turn out to be great. But even at low ISOs the pictures appear over processed and noisy and not as sharp sometimes.
Camera on phone should have great auto mode. It is meant to take pictures quickly. Sony needs to improve on this.
Overall, I got bored with the phone rather quickly. The fact that Nexus 5 and Moto X were offering better day to day use experience is what killed my interest in Z1 Compact in the end. That and lack of development meant I gave up on it. Maybe little too early. But I did give up. I might give it another try at sometime in the future.
But as of now, out of box Nexus 5 will probably give you better experience. I used the adverb "probably" because not everyone will have same point of view. But as a person who have used both this is the conclusion I can draw.

I disagree about the camera. 70% of the time its great, but then there's those times where the focus is out because the Auto mode is rubbish, or there's flash bleed at night when using a flash..
I also disagree about the quality aspect vs Samsung phones. I also come from a long line of Samsung phones, and what I can say is what you additional warm and fuzzies you get over the Z1C and Z1 build quality, is quite the reverse if you drop it. At least Samsung phones bounce without causing damage.
Also the USB flap charging issue - Sony still haven't learnt that phones these days need Wireless Charging... All the "reference" google android devices - Nexus phones / tabs have it, and I also have wireless charging installed in my Note 3. Sony need to quit it with the magnetic charging cables/docs and go
wireless..
However, the positives here are that its the best compact device (of a flagship) on the market. Its also the same size as an iPhone 5/5s and with better all round specs. In Australia an iPhone 5S 16gb retails for $799, vs the Z1C for $552 (and has expandable storage). If anyone is in the market for a high spec compact phone, the Z1C would have to be it.

The Z1C is perfect for my usage pattern which consists of heavy daily use for both web browsing/emails (3hrs SOT+) and music playback (6hrs+) with a few calls and texts. I still have my N5 and would say (as many others probably have done so already) that it's unbeatable in terms of value for money for excellent specs and KK.
Unfortunately for me the N5 is very uncomfortable for one-handed use and drains too quickly through the day to last. The Moto X has the perfect size and form factor but again the battery is insufficient for me. I would also like UK-compatible LTE bands and 32GB of storage which is sadly not possible.
That leaves the Z1C. Although it's far from perfect, I've put a film screen protector over the ASF, the camera is sufficient for my limited needs and ultimately it does a great job of being my mp3 player and web access point.

dilemma
coming from a ancient iPhone 3g, switched over to a Nexus S, followed by Nexus 4 und now Nexus 5:
As i am doing a lot of purchasing for my company, I get many different smartphones to see, test, and setup.
The Nexus S had a perfect size (imho), the Nex 4 was big, and the Nex 5 feels HUGE in my hands, and pockets. Way to big to carry it in my trousers.
Aditionally i would prefer a waterproof phone. BUT: i need root acces, to get a RSAP working.
Is there no easy way of rooting and staying able to receiva OTA as on the Nex 5?

Depends what you mean by easy. If you follow the step by step guide in the forums here, you can get root. It's a lot more difficult than some other devices, no denying that.

It says there is 4.4 all over Google for this phone, I have the unbranded UK versions but software updates says there are no newer versions and I'm only on 4.3.
Why is this?

Nexus 5x I am positive about this phone.

I just thought to counterthread underwhelmed thread. At the end of the day it all boils down to personal needs and little of common sense because new phone seems to be pretty awesome and I mean that.
It's from google so you will have timely updates and your phone will not go into oblivion with updates. Phone is developer very friendly and popular you can tinker it till you die.
RAM problem?! Maybe for some if you hardcore appsumers that don't bother to disable/switch off them once in the while.
Snapdragon 808 such a flop! It's 2015 ! 810 still does a better job when throttles blah blah blah.... C'mon this phone will fly and it's not like you are going to run touchwiz. I currently use Moto G 3 Gen 2GB version and it flies ! Yes it flipping snappy and responsive and I don't play games either. I got like 5-7 chrome windows opened, few apps in the background , VLC player on hold and that little thing is supper great.
1080 FHD screen. I think its heaven unless you do VR stuff and pixels bother you fair enough but for everything else 1080 is sweet hell of the spot and sharp . Also no extra strain for GPU and battery. Panel should be great just as on Nexus 5 and probably better given it's 2015.
I am all the way about IPS panels for few reasons even best S6 amoled panel on basic mode produces dull yellowish whites (sRGB colour space) I don't like wide gammut like Adobe RGB , apart from work I occasionally do, I have no interest in it and even then it looks so unnatural to me eye. Another thing about amoled is gamma which is higher than 2.2 and leaves dark shadows with indistinguishable gradient. It just turns dark and black.
Camera should be nice so in the low light. I shouldn't worry too much about EIS my guess it will have some sort of digital control and I also heard it can be done on the phone in the post ( correct me if I am wrong) So far still samples look really nice in both light conditions.
I like C type cable because I had Iphone 6 and it was so cool just to stick charging cable into phone without any second thought.
One thing I am pretty sure many of you are not aware is front facing camera on 5x has larger aperture at 2.0f while 6p only 2.4f. I don't personally bother about wireless charging because C connection makes it so easy and hassle free to do charging. 5' screen is fine but a little extra at 5.2' is ideal. It comes as perfect media and pocketable device.
Storage wise yes I would prefer 64 GB but 32 will do. And sure they are suckers like apple when giving you an option of 16GB just to piss you off so you can pay extra 50 to buy 32GB version.
I can only say look what apple does with it's hardware...
Edit: Another reason I don't get 6P is the size. Flipping ell nearly 16cm long. Will you get me a new pair of hands too ?

Totally with you on this one. I'm coming from a Note4 after 2 faulty N6's forced me away from Nexus. From a hardware point of view the 5x will be a downgrade but, in every day use it will actually perform better. It's proven in my old N5 which is used by another family member. Every time I get to play with it I consider asking for it back as its still really smooth and even worked better than the N6 in some respects. The Ram on the 6P will be maxed out pushing pixels and the lager battery will be feeding this process so it's not going to be super amazing. Anyone who has the N6 or a Note 4 can tell you that. Some like bigger and powerful phones for games and media and each to their own on that. I want a phone that lasts a day, takes decent enough pictures, and works well with no issues. I have other dedicated devices for everything else.

Just ordered one. I currently have a S6 edge, but I really miss the nexus experience and the 6P is too big for me. Messing with my old nexus 5 just made me want to use it again, but I wanted the fingerprint scanner, so the 5X it is!

This is my thoughts exactly. I think this will be a no frills, smooth phone. Not top specs, but solid enough. If the camera works out well and the battery lasts longer than my Moto X Pure, then I think this will be my next phone. User experience is more important than specs to me.
I also hate AMOLED, not a good experience with the Galaxy Nexus nor the S4 and I've heard bad things about the first two Moto X and Nexus 6 screens...
Yes, I would have preferred 64, but I can learn to be frugal with storage.

Lots of *****ing & moaning about the 5X, but what alot of people don't realize is that the 5X will be alot faster than the G4 & Moto X Pure/Style because it's using a 1080p screen, wouldn't be surprised if it keeps up with the 810 in some test's, 1080p is plenty sharp enough, and being IPS display rather than AMOLED means no burn in problems in the future.
Now onto memory.
2GB on Marshmallow will be more than enough, due to optimization in Android 6.0, I can bet my house & car it run just as smooth as the 6P or other phones with 3GB or 4GB of ram, it is stock Android after all not bloated to high heaven.
Storage.
This i think is the only let down with this phone it should have been 32GB base & 64GB, 16GB these days isn't enough more so without micro SD.
Wireless charging.
Not something i would miss tbh, never used it on the Nexus 5 & don't use it on the Nexus 6, mainly because it was slow to charge & the phone would get hotter ie probably shorting the life of the battery over time.
Camera
It has the same camera as the 6P so no corner cutting in this department, it will have the best camera to date on a Nexus device, not having OIS is abit of a let down tbh & only being F2.0 on the lens, even with the bigger pixels on the sensor it still struggle sometimes in low light, if the lens had been F1.8 then it would have been better while having no OIS.
Also having a better Battery & USB type C are another plus to the 5X.
All in all the 5X will be a superb smartphone, the price in a few months will come down as well as more retailer get the hands on it.

@ixon2001 for storage, I will add on that you can buy one of those sandisk type c flash drives. There's another 32gb of external storage
With regards to the camera, the only questionable thing is will it have any type of stabilization. I know there is no EIS, but it is very odd if it did not have some form of stabilization, even if it isn't of the highest quality

The only thing that worries me in this phone is that 808. I've read that this series of chips has overheating problems, is that true? If so, what's the solution? Either way, I don't see a better phone for me in the market, I seriously hate almost everything that isn't Nexus. Kinda starting to sound like an Apple fanboy but the Nexus version of that, haha.

I've got the G4. The 808 is solid and flies. Wait for the 5X with stock 6.0 and 1080p, its gonna kill!

I'm mostly positive about the N5X.
I really wish they'd retained Qi charging. I became a believer in wireless charging when I got my HP Touchpad with Touchstone charger a few years back, and was really happy to see it in the Nexus lineup. Since the last three Android reference phones have had wireless charging, I thought Google had committed to it. I guess it was just a gimmick? Grrrr.....
But yeah - really looking forward to some Marshmallowey goodness on a new Nexus.

I'm in Canada, the only thing I miss is the cost due to our weak dollar. I feel happy LG is making another Nexus phone.

I was originally concerned about the battery size and 2Gb of RAM but I'm confident marshmallow will be more efficient.
Also I would estimate the battery life to be equal to the G4 because it's pushing less pixels and yet has a smaller battery.
It really sucks that we don't get the google play credit though. It says it right on the page when you buy it.

That's great to hear!

Been looking at the chamfered polished edge bezel on the 6P, I tell you know that thing gonna scratch so easily even with just putting it in & out of a case.
It looks exactly like the Note 4's polished chamfered edge which had problems with scratching.
Those who gone for the 5X in a years time if they look after their phones, will still look good as new while the 6P will more than likely be scratched & pitted up to high heaven.

i never used wireless charging in my life. never considered it either. i wont miss it.
1 front-facing speaker - while a disappointment in itself, i never used a phone with dual frontfacing speakers. so from that point of view, the 5x is still an upgrade to my nexus 5.
i dont think i ever encountered ram-issues with the nexus 5. obviously 3 gb would have been nice, but i dont think this will affect my experience in any way. (maybe on android n? who knows)
snapdragon 808 - the nexus 5 is the strongest phone i've ever used, and the 808 is an upgrade to the 5s 800.
camera - it can only go up. although the image quality itself was pretty good with the nexus 5. the biggest issue i had was the autofocus in darker conditions. i have the perfect shot lined up, focused, sharp and crisp, i tap the camera button - the phone unfocuses and takes a blurred shot. what the ****.
all in all it might be a rather small upgrade for a big price tag. but this time, i swear by me mum, i'm gonna use that sucker for the next 3-4 years or so. (like i did with my nexus s)

No need for that. I, myself, have not tried wireless charging and was planning to on one of these two devices (til I canceled my order), but with turbo charging I don't think I even want to try it. Plus, can't really use your phone while charging wirelessly. I'm one of those that many times my phone gets very low and I use it while charging. Turbo charging is more beneficial for me; I don't think not using wireless charging makes us ignorant. Have a good one

And that's why I said yes it is a good upgrade

I've had the Oneplus One, moved on to the Oneplus Two, and finally settled on the Nexus 6P. I was actually pretty happy with all three devices but there are definitely strengths and weaknesses for each one. What tilted the decision in favor of the 6P was definitely the camera. I was expecting good things from the Oneplus Two, but its implementation left me disappointed.
Oneplus One:
+ Battery Life
+ Robust community for custom roms
- Plasticky external build quality
- Weak Camera
- Lacks fingerprint sensor
Oneplus Two
+ Dual Sim, a useful feature for me since I'm often travelling
+ Excellent external build quality
+/- OxygenOS isn't as bad as what others make it out to be and works well mostly
- Poor fingerprint sensor implementation (doesn't recognize my finger half the time)
- Camera can be further improved (keeps adjusting focus during video capture)
Nexus 6P
+ Best camera of the lot, even with the lack of OIS
+ Marshmallow: Doze has been phenomenal so far
+ Fingerprint sensor is consistently fast and accurate
+ Gorgeous screen and outstanding build quality
+/- Mixed feelings about Ambient Display for now, potentially useful but Android Wear supersedes its value
- DT2W not available on stock rom
- Bluetooth audio constantly skipping if Android Wear is connected concurrently (YMMV)
- Does not work with certain earphones without workarounds, e.g. Xiaomi Pistons

I'm assuming the OP is not a rhetorical question.
I owned a OnePlus One briefly and I currently have a OnePlus Two. Neither holds a candle to the Nexus 6P. Everything about the 6P, from the build to the display to the camera to the SoC to the fingerprint sensor, is a step up from the OnePlus Two, let alone the OnePlus One, which is getting long in the tooth at this point.
The lack of out-of-the-box double-tap to wake (which, frankly, is a huge pain-point for me since I love the feature and I don't think it'd tax Android too much, frankly -- Windows 10/8.1. has it, for crying out loud -- it doesn't cause much drain on lesser hardware so I don't know why this isn't a stock feature of Android's) is one the few minuses for the Nexus 6P.
I've not had issues with other things like connectivity (6.0.1. apparently introduced some LTE issues for some users), or popping glass or bending chassis. I suspect there are things behind those stories (except the LTE issue, which is quite fixable) than the reports suggest.
Let me use an analogy to answer your question. The OnePlus One is a nice little Volkswagen Beetle (emissions issues aside). Reliable, affordable, fun to drive, nice to look at, etc. Meanwhile, the Nexus 6P is a 5 series BMW. An elegant, high performance machine that also projects a certain level of means. They're in different classes of cars so comparing them is like comparing apples and bananas. At the end of the day, while you'll always love your Beetle, if you can afford to get a 5 or 7-series BMW, you should definitely get one. The same thing can be said for the OnePlus One and the Nexus 6P.

FWIW: My OPO died at 14 months and OPO refused to do anything about it saying that it was out of warranty so I was out of luck. You can draw your own conclusions.

I just came from a opo, its not as big of an upgrade as you might think. The in hand feel is nice, but the opo feels sturdier, performance is nice, but not that much better than when I was running sultanxdas marshmallow release. The battery does not last as long on my 6p, but the camera and upcoming band 12 support are the reasons why I switched. That's about it. Oh the fingerprint reader is cool, but I used smartlock so I rarely needed to unlock anyways.

So I've been seeing alot of posts saying the nexus 6p is "the best android phone ever". Well I, for one, don't quite agree. Yea, it runs stock android which makes the UI alot smoother compared to say samsung . But still the camera is only average. Processor isn't on the real high end build is unique but not a sexy phone. So what are your views?

Very satisfied with this phone. Android pay works with root, speedy and very good battery life for me. I can use different carriers. No bend for me as that is usually from non average handling and I always use a case.

Overall as a total package it is the best Android phone I have used. The battery life is a bit disappointing as I was expecting iPhone 6S Plus type battery but I'm still overall very pleased.

It's a very good phone IMHO, but with the bending issue, noise on the headphone jack and no Android pay with Xposed I feel pretty dumb for buying this instead of a oneplus 2. I have a oneplus one and that phone is solid. I skipped the op2 because of nfc and now I have a bent 6p and still no Android pay. Might not be such a big deal but the 6p costs so much more for similar specs.
Yeah the 6p has a "better" display, but I can't really sus out a big difference unless I'm really looking for it. The camera is also a bit better(mostly in low light).

Are you serious? 810 was the best SOC at the time from Qualcomm, nothing better. This is the newest Super AMOLED from Samsung. Uses larger pixels for camera, best in class for all situations which often are low light. This is so successful Samsung took note and reduced 16mp to 12mp for larger pixel and sensor. Only Moto X Pure has better speakers. Add that with the excellent battery and software, there is little doubt Nexus 6P was the best Android Phone of 2015. No other phone provided the full package. The fingerprint is icing on the cake, Google's imprint is the best fingerprint solution on any smartphone to date.
For custom roms, 6P is heaven. I used Purity in the past, not available for 6P, but I am using it anyway. Building roms for 6P for either CM/AOSP/OMNI based roms is an absolute breeze.
As for quality issues? No idea since I haven't seen any Nexus 6P in the wild that aren't in pristine condition and well perfect.
For those complaining about Android Pay and they rooted for Xposed? That is hilarious...

The Android pay issue is not the phones fault but it's worth noting that in my case I went into it after having used Google wallet for years with exposed on multiple devices. I didn't want the op2 because no nfc, little did I know that it wouldn't matter with Android pay since it locked down the ability to use with root.

I'm not going to get into a war that neither side can win since it's our opinion... But in my opinion, they are insanely overrated, 6P included. I will just leave it at that.

If your heavily invested in your mobile OS, and want everything to work, buy an iPhone.
If you prefer Android, and still want everything to work, Nexus is your best bet. Otherwise, you risk OEM skins breaking things (AA, Wear, etc.), and possibly never seeing a firmware upgrade that gets things right.
Glad your OPO worked perfectly for you; it did not for many.
This is of course just how I see things, but it is due to years of experience with my ear very close to the ground. (C;

Yes we know, you spend all your time on XDA trying to stop folks from buying Nexus and buying a Galaxy phone. It's very clear from your post history you don't actually contribute anything to XDA other than negativity about the 6P.

Is the Nexus 6p Overrated? ....................A IPhone is Overrated. Honestly I would have to say NO, you cant even go to a carrier and pick one up yet. Here is my reason for a a Nexus device:
-Service
Supports CDMA, GSM and Voice over WI-FI, Great for me since I have Verizon and it also would make it easy for me to drop Verizon and go somewhere else without spend 700$+ on their new phone.
-Price to performance
For 499$-649$ now compare to the Samsung S7 edge 800-900$ and performing nearly the same and difference are in the 1-3 sec range (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smY4FOeVdvs)
-Pretty Great display
It's a Samsung AMOLED Display, only thing you don't get is a super bright mode for the outdoors.
-Great Camera
It not the best camera but it’s a great camera. It’s able to take great picture at night and during the day. 1080p and 4k recording is great when not moving. I'm still wondering how in the world people are bending their phones. It seems like a lot of people watching YouTube these day a little too much. I guess I’m a lucky person who never had that issue. I loved the build but i do rock a case on it, the metal does make it feels like it worth its price.

Only one other phone that could come close to this level of sound quality is a HTC device with boom sound.

This is one of the hardest subject because we all don't use our phones the same. More you play games and watch video faster your battery goes down. Usually on an 8 hour work I get to 83% with light (email, phone call, text message, Facebook). Come home and play games and watch YouTube for 4-5 hours and get to 20% -15%
-No bloatware (include carrier software)
-You know you are get a next Android Update
-Google provides a monthly security Update
-Most active developer community on the internet
-Knowing that you will be able to unlock your bootloader
-Having ROMs and Kernel

It definitely isn't overrated, its extremely reasonably priced in comparison to hilarious outrageous prices charged by Samsung and Apple, its a premium phone without the premium price tag with the best software experience around on a mobile OS. Also the camera definitely isn't average.

People around me think it's overrated (and way overpriced) too, but that's just because I'm in China where no one appreciates the simplicity and speed of AOSP-based Android. The camera is even better with the aid of apps like Camera FV-5 (e.g. macro), and finger scanning speed beats iPhones to it. They like the new MI 5 for instance, but they've never been able to get their hands on one
But yeah, I hate the looks the more I look at it. I don't want it to look like a Huawei phone, lest look like a Mate 7.

I have a right to my opinion that it's overrated. I've said this from the minute I became obsessed with Android phones years ago... People grossly overrate stock Android, hence Nexus phones as well.
For a small and quick example... The 6P is the first Nexus which doesn't have a downright embarrassing camera, yet people still said Nexus was the best. Camera is just one example. Let's not forget the laughable screens on the Nexus 4 and 5, and the color issues with the 6 and 6P.
Anyhow, glad you like your phone. You should if you're using it each day. Everyone has their own needs. I'm happy for you as much as you won't believe it lol. Remember, there is no wrong choice.

Your arguments don't make much sense since Nexus phones were introduced as what Google meant android to be and as a development platform for app developers and for those who contribute to the AOSP project.
Nexus phones were advertised as the best stock android experience and that is true, this is as google meant android to be. Obviously a lot of folks want the Samsung/LG/HTC etc experience. It is ludicrous to say that is overrated, no brand of phone does stock android better. Anyone buying a Nexus device should know what it is they are buying.
Nexus as a mainstream device only came about because a following developed for the stock experience. Camera would not have been high on the list, promoting Android, and helping some manufactures gain brand recognition and growth was. It wasn't until Nexus 5 Google saw Nexus as a brand to go head to head with Apple. Nexus 6 first attempt, and Google managing to provide this level of camera experience and overall feel at $450 one year later is amazing.
Despite the amazing hardware and refinements, I still see Nexus phones as the best way to introduce someone to android on a budget. It comes with great hardware, 810/806, good battery life, fingerprint, monthly security updates, an open platform to use device as you wish (rooting, development), and a great simple point and shoot camera for all lighting conditions. I do not see how that is overrated.
If one wanted the absolute best camera, materials, quality controlled and tested build, and the prestige or popularism, Nexus clearly not the phone. Best to look at an iPhone frankly...

I had the LG G4 for 6 months, sold it and now am happily using a Nexus 6P. I missed my Nexus 5 and the "development" side of things, so going back to the Nexus family makes me happy.

Nexus is perfect for a specific type of user.... The smart ones! Besides the 6p has better low light camera response than g4/v10, which was best from last year.
It's a highly customizable device. Doesn't compare to Samsung or lg in this department. IPhone isn't even on the same planet, its the opposite of customizing.
Also the 6p's 810 v2 has received over 120,000 antutu benchmarks consistently without getting hot or rapid battery loss.
Lastly it will be current for at least 3 to 4 years (maybe more) with a custom ROM.

Very satisfied with this phone. Android pay works with root, speedy and very good battery life for me. I can use different carriers. No bend for me as that is usually from non average handling and I always use a case.

Everyone has different uses for their phone. Some likes phones with better camera who doesnt watch videos or play games... Some enjoy playing games and dont really use the camera. Some like to listen audio or surf the web.. Some who are rich and just needs a phone.
There is no 1 phone that is the best for everything. If it existed, it woudnt be cheap.. Just look at the 2 biggest players, Apple and Samsung.. their phones still has flaws and cost much more then Nexus devices, even though the nexus devices over the past years are getting up there... This device is just as good as any Samsung or iPhone (of the same year) IMHO...

Anyone feeling a bit let down? V20 review

I am trying to convince myself that I am wrong or somehow biased, but I don't think I am in this situation. I am a phone junkie and I bounce between devices quickly. In the last 6 months I have had the Axon 7, HTC 10 (still have, S-off'd with Unlocked GSM firmware/ software), Nexus 6P, HTC M9, s7 edge, s6 edge+, iphone 7 plus, Droid Turbo, and now the V20. I will say that over all, the V20 is built beautifully and performs well. The battery life is a bit weaker than I was hoping, just like the HTC 10, the quick charge 3.0 almost covers that short coming. The things that are making me disappointed though are as follows:
LG Skin / UI : Feels a little off, made up a bit by using Nova launcher, but everyone knows it won't remove it all...
Performance: I might be expecting a bit much, but I have had my device slow down (to unbearable lag / waiting on apps to switch/come up) more than a handful of times requiring a reboot
Battery Life: As stated above, the battery life is pretty week and I find myself having to top up a towards 6 pm, it does charge quickly, but find that a little sad.
Camera: This is where I am shocked. The camera overall doesn't live up to what I expected or how it was advertised. In ideal situations, it can take good photos, and I mean GOOD, not Great. If you don't switch to manual and tweak everything out, you will be sadly disappointed. Auto focus has a hard time locking in, can get a bit of grain / noise, and if there is movement or action, good luck. In video mode or if you flip into manual mode, you can get much better results, but in the heat of the moment, not everyone will be quick to get it ready in time to get that shot. In low light situations, it has been very disappointing. The lag time between the flash / focus and getting a picture off, I end up with a blurry out of focus picture most of the time. I am basing this off pictures I take of my young daughter. The camera on the HTC 10, Axon 7, iPhone 7 plus, S7 edge, and S6 edge+ all out perform in these situations. For a phone/device that is supposed to be built around photography and video, it has been a major disappointment. the Main camera/sensor is decent, but the zoom/cropped area is a bit small. The wide angle does cover a lot more at the cost of resolution. I am hoping that LG does something to address this in software/firmware updates, but as of now, it is a huge let down.
Audio: The single firing speaker does an admirable job for playing music, speaker phone on the other hand is a somewhat weak and sometimes hard to hear, even when driving in silent vehicle with the windows closed. The Quad DAC has also let me down. After the DAC in the Axon 7 and the HTC 10, I am not impressed. It does improve the audio, but not as well as the competition. With the DAC enabled and audio all the way up, the volume level is weak. With the same headphones that I used in the Axon 7 and the HTC 10, I have no problem hearing the outside noise. I also don't feel that it is nearly as tweakable / noticeable as the HTC 10. When I had the DAC on the HTC 10 on, I could immediately tell the difference and the Highs, Mids, and Lows were way easier to notice / spot changes on. Again, maybe software updates may resolve this, but definitely a let down for me.
Overall: The phone is beautiful. For a phone with removable battery, it honestly feels like a unibody device. I am a bit disappointed in all phone manufacturers currently going to this 2.5D curved glass for no good reason, making getting tempered glass protectors a joke majority of the time. The software overall is fairly smooth. The screen is above average and the secondary screen has become second nature to me. Being able to snap a wide angle shot when others can't definitely something that has lead to people asking me what phone I am using. Had I not gone through all the phones I have in the last 6 months, I may have been way more impressed. As a flagship device, I will say it comes close to delivering what was promised. Had the Note 7 not failed miserably with the exploding issue, I think the V20 would have easily been eclipsed. This phone gets so close in many departments, but doesn't quite nail them down. Considering there is nothing else in the market that draws my attention, I will try and see if it makes it through the initial growing pains that might be solved with software updates.
Before anyone wants to say I forgot about the Pixel, no, I didn't. After having the HTC 10 (which I still have and love as a backup device) and playing with the Pixel, I see absolutely no reason to waste the money on the sad excuse of a flagship device at the same taxing price as an apple product. How google basically took the HTC 10, made it ugly , went with onscreen buttons and a whole lot of bezel, and took away removable storage but is still succeeding with it is beyond me. Yes it has an "amazing camera", assistant (you can get with root on the v20 and nexus 6p), and can charge the battery super fast, but the price tag and lack of innovation is a deal breaker.
So, please, let me know if you agree or disagree. I have been trying to be unbiased and love this phone. Am I being unreasonable, or is it really just a device that got close to the finish line and just gave up?

I think it all depends on what your needs are. We know it doesn't have the best camera. It's very competitive, but not the best. Performance can be fixed with updates. I suspect that LG rushed the ROM to be the first to have Nougat, which was one of their selling points for this phone. Battery life depends on your usage. LG's Quantum displays are horribly inefficient, so the screen is your primary battery drain, but my understanding is that idle drain is very good. Then you have fast charging and one of the few phones that you can instantly go to 100% on by swapping batteries.
For me, this is the only phone that checks all of my requirements: Functional always-on-display, IR blaster, 5.7"+ screen, good camera, removable battery and SD card. So, I'm buying the complete package, not because it's the best at everything. Every single phone has shortcomings. You need to decide which ones you can live with and buy your next device based on that criteria.

I'm with you, I thought the camera was quite a disappointment when shooting in auto mode. I liked the phone a lot (coming from a Nexus 6p) and if the camera had been good it would have been a no-brainer for me, because as greyhulk says it checks most, if not all, the boxes. But I need a camera that shoots good pics in auto mode. Sent it back.

Battery is my main disappointment. Even with minimal use I have only made it an entire day once. Something keeps eating battery while the phone is idle and I have yet to track it down. I suspect it is an app that needs a Nougat update. Same usage and set of apps on the S7 Edge and Note 7 would usually leave me near 50% at the end of the day.

Have to say I disagree.
The Hi-Fi is plenty loud enough and noticeably changes on the go. I have noticed though, it depends on the headphones that you are using. I have used 4 different sets. And each pair gave different results.
The camera is great. Video is turning out to be exactly as expected. As for the camera, it doesn't grab the shot in the first try every time and its nothing a tap of the screen and refocus hasn't been able to fix. But than again I haven't had a camera phone that has been able to take the shot first time every time.
Battery, that's a user to user base question. The other day I was able to get 32 hours out of my battery. But than on the other hand with very heavy use I only got 6.5 hours.

Weird I get about the same battery life as I did with my note 7. When at work I use the phone about the same amount every day 12 hr shifts and I am between. 50 to 70 percent

I think your disappointment stems from using so many current generation phones, lets face it most years the hardware upgrades (specifically processors) match each other.
The HTC 10 runs the same hardware as the LG v20, so you've experienced it already. S7 has the same processor as well (assuming its the Qualcomm version) so it's not a big difference compared to someone coming from last generation phones.
Like for me I am coming from a v10 which had an outdated processor out the gate (others were using 810 while the v10 had the 808 due to overheating issues with the 810). The phone is literally over twice as fast as the v10 so I would certainly see a difference compared to you coming from the same generation of processors.
I don't own the phone yet but I will say it's a disappointment to see the camera being a letdown in reviews when you consider that the camera was the big feature of the v10.
Battery doesn't sound all that great either but it's got to be better than the v10. I am sure this will be remedied by 3rd party extended batteries that we will hopefully see. My v10 battery sucked until I upgraded to a 9000 mAh Zerolemon battery pack.

Why's there no option for ambivalence or just predictable? Just look at the stats and you pretty much know what you're getting. I'm happy with this phone after the $200 off and assuming I get the ~$150 headphone offer. I would be unhappy for full list price without those promos. For the price w/promos there just isn't anything comparable.
The display is the worst part of this phone for me. AMOLED just beats LCD anyway you slice it, this phone looks badly washed out and the auto brightness does weird things. Also the viewing angles are wonky, I was used to being able to use my phone at extreme angles but now I find myself lifting the phone up more. If this phone had AMOLED it would be a solid 9.9/10 for me, of course I knew I wouldn't like the screen when I bought it I just couldn't find a solid AMOLED phone. I don't particularly like the fingerprint reader position, have to pick it up off a table to use it and I've found my finger accidentally turns the screen on sometimes when I put it in my pocket. The second screen is nice for changing tracks or seeing what track is playing (or seeing the time at night without going blind), but it sucks for notifications. I miss my notification LED and my Qi charging.
Other than that this phone is pretty solid. I'm getting almost identical battery life that my Note 7 got, namely about 2 days. The standby battery life is phenomenal, I usually lose 1-2% overnight even with the second screen on. I love the removable battery so I don't have to worry about the battery dying before I'm ready to get rid of the phone. I'm no audiophile, so to me this phone is the best audio experience I've ever had with a phone hands down. Even streaming at just 192kbps this phone really makes my Shure SE215's sing. The camera is noticeably worse than the Note 7 at low light but it's still the 2nd best camera on a phone I've seen. Close up pictures have lots of nice detail and that's the kind of pictures I usually take. It focuses quickly and locks focus down better than the Note 7 did. For the kinds of the pictures I take in fact this camera is better, unlike my Samsungs this phone's auto white balance mode works correctly. The whole phone feels quick and snappy, comparable to the Note. I'm getting slightly better signal than I've ever gotten, in fact the wifi is much stronger than either of my Note 7's were.
I like the look of the phone and it feels great in my hands, which although not as great as the all glass Note 7, it feels like I could drop it and have nothing to worry about. I don't find the UI intrusive or laggy, eventually I'll swap over to nova prime once I'm tired of stock. For me it ticks all the right boxes of keeping old features rather than heading the apple direction and removing everything. Removable battery, SD card, IR Blaster, headphone jack, USB C, etc For that reason alone I think it's worth supporting LG

Main reasons I am keeping it are the $200 off, switched to T-mobile from VZW, and they are paying off the ETF so saving that money and the headphones makes the phone ideally almost free to me. For the full retail, I would return it in a heartbeat. People have hit it on the head that it really might be the fact the the Snapdragon 820 and the 4 GB ram is now getting long in the tooth. The camera can produce some nice pictures in manual mode, so I try to jump to that right away, but just a bit of a hassle to be on the ball to take a simple pic. With moderate light and close up, it does perform well. I can't really control lighting at all times and try and get my daughter up close and still when a picture moment comes though, the s7 handled it much better. I am going to try some different headphones to see if it is just the main pair I use that is letting me down. For the money / hardware, I think the Axon is the better bang for the buck with the AMOLED screen and the all carrier support. The speakers on that are ridiculous and the DAC was solid. This phone over all falls somewhere in the 7.5-8 /10 for me. Between the V20 and the HTC 10 I'll be good til the next wave of Flagships hit. I just have the feeling that LG pushed it out in a hurry to capitalize on the Note 7 flop and they could've polished it up a lot more. I can see them making the camera more responsive in low light and possibly addressing the battery life / hifi-dac customization / volume in the updates. It does a lot right but overall I was expecting and hoping for more from LG when they have had the perfect shot to grab the market. So far I am seeing the responses that seem line up with my expectation. Thanks everyone for taking the time to read and respond!

For me it ticks all the right boxes of keeping old features rather than heading the apple direction and removing everything. Removable battery, SD card, IR Blaster, headphone jack, USB C, etc For that reason alone I think it's worth supporting LG

I came from the LG Nexus 5x and I loved that phone. While it's only been a few days, I am more than happy with the V20.
I get a phone through work, but upgraded on my own last year to the 5x. So when I cracked my screen a few weeks ago, I went through work this time. Options were limited on AT&T and since I'm gonna be stuck with a phone for 2 years I wanted the newest phone I could get without "compromising" what I'd wanted in a phone. I also didn't want to settle for a year old phone or switch to the iPhone (Android since 2010 and likely forever).
Anyway, I say all that to say that the V20 was never on my radar, mostly because of the size, even though I'd previously had the Note 2, 3 and briefly 4. I'd been very happy with the size and feel of the 5x, but the battery life was horrendous. Basically anything would have been an upgrade, and the V20 does more than I need in the battery department. If I can get to my bed before needing a charge, I'm a happy man, since I'd be charging around lunch on a daily basis before.
I was already used to the fingerprint sensor and love the fact it's on the back on the V20 as well. I can deal with the volume buttons swapped and the power button moving to the fingerprint sensor. It was a little odd at first but I'm used to it already.
Again, the camera and screen on the 5x was mediocre so anything would be better. And again the V20 checks both of those boxes; huge, vibrant screen, and pictures that look beautiful to my eye. If you're going from newest flagship to newest flagship an argument can be made on those points, but if you're upgrading after a year + the hardware is always going to be better, even if you find some flaws, and IMO the V20 does great in both categories.
The removable battery does have its pros. A few years ago it was a 'must-have' for me, but nowadays I'd taker water/dust proofing over it. Not a deal breaker though. The SD card slot IS however a wonderful thing. Despite the 64 GB internal, I love being able to add and not worry about space. I've had my local music library backed up to an SD card for quite a while and it's so convenient to have that at my disposal locally (no network connection needed).
The software. Not much better than PURE Android and rooting has always been a priority for me. BUT, stability ultimately is the most important thing on a phone to me now. Being able to lower DPI via adb shell is huge. Really not having TiBu or the ability to remove some carrier apps is about the worst left we can't do. And to be honest, it's easily overlooked. Is it annoying AF we can't remove everything we don't want? Absolutely. But said apps can be hidden with certain launchers, and I've come to just ignore them in the app drawer, forgetting they're even there.
Add in the FM radio (so novel yet so great), Second Screen (which I actually could use some tips on getting the most out of) and I'm digging this phone. Is LG's UI a little clunky? Yea, but I'll live. And using something new is refreshing, honestly.
It's only been a few days but I'm happy with this device and have no regrets. The V20 may also get me back on the Phablet train, being unable to use something smaller as they feel like toys. I've not gone a full 2 years without upgrading in quite some time. This phone is going to be the test.

I agree with what you say. I think my let down is from moving from flagship to flagship all into the same time frame. The coming from any device before the snapdragon 820 and a quad HD screen, this thing is a major upgrade. I agree that the fingerprint scanner is best on back... Loved it on the nexus 6p and the axon 7. I just sold my htc 10 so I'm committed to the v20. Holding out til something amazing comes this way...

The display is the worst part of this phone for me. AMOLED just beats LCD anyway you slice it, this phone looks badly washed out and the auto brightness does weird things. Also the viewing angles are wonky, I was used to being able to use my phone at extreme angles but now I find myself lifting the phone up more. If this phone had AMOLED it would be a solid 9.9/10 for me, of course I knew I wouldn't like the screen when I bought it I just couldn't find a solid AMOLED phone. I don't particularly like the fingerprint reader position, have to pick it up off a table to use it and I've found my finger accidentally turns the screen on sometimes when I put it in my pocket. The second screen is nice for changing tracks or seeing what track is playing (or seeing the time at night without going blind), but it sucks for notifications. I miss my notification LED and my Qi charging.
Other than that this phone is pretty solid. I'm getting almost identical battery life that my Note 7 got, namely about 2 days. The standby battery life is phenomenal, I usually lose 1-2% overnight even with the second screen on. I love the removable battery so I don't have to worry about the battery dying before I'm ready to get rid of the phone. I'm no audiophile, so to me this phone is the best audio experience I've ever had with a phone hands down. Even streaming at just 192kbps this phone really makes my Shure SE215's sing. The camera is noticeably worse than the Note 7 at low light but it's still the 2nd best camera on a phone I've seen. Close up pictures have lots of nice detail and that's the kind of pictures I usually take. It focuses quickly and locks focus down better than the Note 7 did. For the kinds of the pictures I take in fact this camera is better, unlike my Samsungs this phone's auto white balance mode works correctly. The whole phone feels quick and snappy, comparable to the Note. I'm getting slightly better signal than I've ever gotten, in fact the wifi is much stronger than either of my Note 7's were.
I like the look of the phone and it feels great in my hands, which although not as great as the all glass Note 7, it feels like I could drop it and have nothing to worry about. I don't find the UI intrusive or laggy, eventually I'll swap over to nova prime once I'm tired of stock. I agree. Top tier amoled should've been here. Probably would've improved the already great battery life another 20%ish. And notification LED would've been awesome. Yeah yeah. I know we have second screen, but I don't use it. Probably why I get 6h+SOT all the time. 8h 1m was my best and I had 3% left. I get 7h+ often. Standby time is incredible. Hasn't been consistent for me but probably lose 1% about every 5h average. Need to root and get adblocking. That will probably improve battery life even more. Hoping a custom kernel with only modification of voltage settings will help too. Tired of all these unstable kernels with features I don't use or care.about. haven't stuck with a custom kernel since...maybe note2. It has been awhile. Just roll with stock kernel since no dev wants to make a simple kernel with voltage adjustments. Not paying anymore devs on kernels until they deliver. I've paid upfront twice and font nothing in return. Scumbags.and I hope the fingerprint scanner has features. Features like being able to use as track pad or minimum that uses swipes for shortcuts like the pixel. That would be friggin' awesome. And aside from camera on auto not being consistent the phone otherwise is almost flawless. I've gotten accustomed to the camera on auto though. Multiple pictures and using focus at different spots has helped tremendously. I've been able to tweak my screen close to accurate by eyeballing it so pictures look like the scenery on screen now. Got to test video and bi def recording today at veterans day parade. Both exceeded my high expectations. Just need slmevody to find binning of chips which I made a dedicated thread for but nobody answered. I've looked everywhere. And one of first things I do when I root is customize the boot up screen. Boring. Very boring and.typical of T-Mobile. I've only had to reboot for sim or micro SD reasons though. Very very stable. Micro SD isn't up to par unless I have root. Nonetheless I've been able to work around it. Just had to take care out. And everybody keeps saying IR blaster. I think our IT is a transceiver. Supposedly it can learn but I haven't tried yet. R.I.P. remotes if it indeed can learn. LG did good. Seems rushed but this is truly a flagship phone in many ways. Swappable battery in 2016on a flagship. Say what? LG needs to step it up on the accessories. Ready to buy a 6 pack of batteries. I got in on the $51 deal for the BCK-5200 package on Amazon. Now just need a good sale on batteries.

Coming from a note 7 I have mixed feelings. It ticks a lot of the boxes but I miss waterproof, the great samsung screens and I knew about those when I bought. The camera really disappointed me though. I was expecting it to take way better pics than it does. Spoiled from the note 7 I suppose. I didn't realize before buying it that it had the IR blaster and I had really been missing that from my s5. Nice to not have to hunt for remotes anymore. Its not ideal, but for someone like me that over 5.7" screen is a requirement it really is the best second choice to my old note 7. The bootloader sucks too. I had gotten out of the habit of reroming phones since samsung pay and now that I am off samsung I thought it would be fun to start that again. But nope. I have a sprint one and it seems to be non rootable at the moment.

I do think a little bit of my dissapointment in the camera is not genuine. I am mainly comparing shots taken with this phones camera viewed on this phones screen to shots taken by the note 7 on the note 7's screen. The same photo would of course pop more on the amoled screen even if it was the same camera so thats part of the disappointment. But even still I think the note 7 took way better pics.

I love the phone other than no root, the camera I'm not really disappointed because I'm no photographer, the IR blaster is a must thank you LG, Samsung what are you thinking. The removable battery isn't a big deal since the battery does pretty good. If it was water proof that would top it off.
