Help, tried updating baseband and ended up with no baseband at all - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So after having some connectivity issues recently, I just tried to update the baseband on my I9505. I downloaded the newest version for my phone (XXHOJ2) and used Odin to flash it. The size of the file (1.5GB) indicated that I was flashing more than just the modem firmware, so I wasn't surprised to find myself back in a Touchwiz-environment after rebooting. I thought I'd just deal with it and re-flash CM12 after I was done (is this how it's supposed to work, isn't there a way to update the baseband without flashing a complete stock ROM?).
Anyways, now it seems my phone simply doesn't have a baseband. It says "unknown" under "Baseband" in the settings, and it won't recognize the SIM card or even turn on Wifi. What did I do wrong?
And more importantly, how do I fix this?

To flash just the modem, you'd need to extract it from the tar md5 package that the ROM is packed up in. Then you can flash just that part through Odin.
To resolve your problem, flash the ROM again. For some reason, Odin installs of ROMs don't always function 100% properly when done. Usually, flashing the ROM again resolves the issue.

Yeah, I realized that just now. I didn't even bother to look into the .md5 file before... Anyways, I tried reflashing with Odin and I got the exact same results. Baseband unknown, IMEI= null and no sim detected.
EDIT: Wow, I don't believe this... In a last attempt to save my phone, I just rooted and installed TWRP, then flashed an old nightly of CM12 I still had on my external SD. Didn't expect anything to happen, but voilĂ ... IMEI is back, Wifi connects, sim is detected, and baseband now reads XXUHOJ2, which is what I was initially trying to update it to. No idea how exactly that fixed it, but I'm sure glad it did!

I know you were using Cyanogenmod, but try installing the stock ROM on your device prior to installing Cyanogenmod and see if that restores your IMEI and baseband.

firmware flash fail?

Hi everyone
I just tried to flash my phone to JM2
But... i have no idea if it succeeded or not.
odin3 shows only 1 block with success, other two as failures.
Appearently, the PDA/CODE was flashed as it should, CSC/MODEM weren't.
Now the odd thing is when i look in the phone details, it says baseband version JM1 and build ECLAIR JM2, both persumablt saying it all went ok.
So.... what the hell.
Also, is it possible to re-flash only CSC and modem without the device going ape****, or is it a done-deal that every reflash has to be with the full code?
Every answer is much appreciated, thanks.
if the phone booted up then the flash worked.
when flashes fail, they usually fail completely
Yeah, but since odin says it failed, i really don't know what to think.
Is there any way to check for sure what does the phone currently have and what does it not?
I have read you can flash each section individually but I would suggest reading the forum threads on flashign teh firmware first to ensure this is correct.

Can not make calls and no sound.

Hi Guys
No matter what Rom i load i am unable to make calls when i dial a number the phone just freeze and screen goes blank i also am getting no sound on all roms any ideas?

You need to ODIN flash the official STOCK rom/firmware in order
to get it working properly again.
The first step is to go to SamMobile.com and download the
official stock odin flash Jellybean 4.2.2 firmware which is
specifically designed for your phone's model number.
After flashing the correct odin flash TAR file firmware you will be good to go!
Good luck!

Hi, I'm having similar issue, quoted underneath.
I have no sound at all coming from the device, I've read most threads that say sound on the heading for I9505 and for many people flashing I9505XXUDMH8_I9505OXXDMHA_I9505XXUDMH8_HOME.tar resolved the problem but not in my case.
Last night I tried flashing I9505XXUEMI8_I9505OXAEMI8_I9505XXUEMI8 and after I changed the kernel I got some sound when turning the volume up and down but the phone was running very slow.
Today I tried flashing Omega rom v15 flashing the right modem for the new bootloader before flashing the zip and no sound, I tried changing the kernel, still nothing.
So now I'm in build number XXUEMJ9 and baseband MJ5.

Question

So im gonna take the OTA for NG2 again and before I unroot and flash it this time isnt there a way I can pull the update from my files after i download it so people can use it to flash the update manually from their external sd card without waiting for the OTA?
There is a way to do so by allowing your phone to download the update file and then pull it from cache, but I'm not sure of the details.
@frostedunit Yeah I already did it lol and it works. But now my problem is I flashed it multiple times and it doesn't update my baseband or software to NG2 it only changes my build number. Also i cant turn on wifi.. it says "Your phones security has blocked an action that is not permitted. No further action is required"?
Good old Samsung trying to lock their **** down like Apple.
Don't suppose you could try to pull the modem files the way you did for NAE? I probably won't get the update till the last darn day.
That's only thing I really wanted to do was update to the latest modem lol. But I would need some directions on how to do it.
I opened up the update.zip file and found 2 files called
modem.bin.img.p
NON-HLOS.bin.img.p
I'm pretty sure you have to have the modem active, but see if this jogs your memory:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50294725
OK I know how to do that but I still have the same NAE modem on my phone. After I took the NG2 OTA should my modem have updated to NG2 also or stay at NAE?
I would think so. If you saved the update from cache, you could try flashing it in recovery and then factory resetting to see if it sticks.
I tried that lol that's what worked for me on the NAE update to get the modem to flash but now I took the OTA and then manually flashed the update from my external sd card multiple times and keep getting the same results. I'll try a couple more times to see if it sticks.
If I can get the modem to flash correctly I can pull it by following the directions in the link that you posted.
Are you flashing with a custom recovery or stock? You should have to rename the file update.zip and put it on the root of your internal storage and use the stock recovery to get it to work.
(I'm just throwing things out there. I'm in no way implying that you don't know what you're doing, just trying to work through this.)
Yeah I forgot to change the name that might help lol and yeah I used stock recovery it actually updated my recovery on the first flash to NG2.
Still isn't working.. I'll keep trying but I'll probably end up waiting for the .tar file to be released. Either this update doesn't update the modem and software to say NG2 or the stock recovery is just having trouble flashing it.
Edit
There is an option in recovery to apply update from adb if I knew how to do that it would probably work.

Probably some security crap with the mismatch between the build and baseband numbers.
Thanks for giving it a shot!
I updated through adb sideload and still no new modem lol.
Problem solved
I downgraded to MK2 modem and then reflashed NAE modem and took the update again from my external sd card and the NG2 modem stuck this time lol.
And it also fixed my wifi problem

Mystery Frankenstien S4 Multiple Errors and Inconsistencies

I've got a strange S4 on my hands. Its stock 4.4.2 was reporting it as i9505, international S4 LTE version.
However the download mode is reporting it as SPH-L720. Nvm, just a little hiccup I thought, let's go ahead.
I managed to get it to root and install TWRP 3.0.1.0 S4 LTE version. However after this it started throwing the Recovery is not SELinux enforcing error. It was still booting fine however. Could enter both S4 Stock rom and TWRP.
I wiped its data, cache, dalvik, and system, formatted to F2FS. So far so good. Installed AOSP 6 by JD Team, installed stock GApps. Booted straight into
Great. Everything's working perfect. Now I inserted my sim and whoop-de-doo. Sim shows up in home menu, but no antenna activity.
That's strange, why isn't it working? I thought the modem firmware was out of date or incompatible with Android M. Decided to find the latest FW matching my modem description and flash it.
Except, this is what showed up in the data I'd taken care to gather before beginning anything:
Model Number: GT-I9505
Baseband version: I9505OLBFNB4
Build Number: KOT49H.V1
AP: I9505XXUBFNB7
CP: I9505OLBFNB4
CSC: I9505DXUFNB3
Found a firmware I thought matched and flashed it. Rebooted, and suddenly phone won't boot at all.
Can't find a firmware now. PIT's gone. Phone is showing "SECURE FAIL: KERNEL" and "System software not authorized b Samsung has been found on your phone" on normal power on where it refuses to boot at all. Can't access TWRP either.
I can still go into Download mode and Odin can still access the phone.
I'm completely lost with how to proceed with this now however. Phone model numbers do not match anything, PIT gone, TWRP gone, serial numbers do not match anything, Kies refuses to initialize the phone, etc etc.
Any help would be welcome. I had opened over 50 tabs before I suddenly lost heart and closed all of them and took to writing this post. Thanks for reading.
EDIT: Further checking the IMEI shows the phone is actually a i9500 according to SNDeep.com. This just keeps getting worse.
if you bought this from a second hand from a phone shop it's state is down them not having a clue what they are doing and flashing firmware onto it. pretty much everyone here has the not enforcing SEandroid on recovery and kernel it's nothing to worry about.
AOSP 6.0.1 is almost a unified rom so it works with all but a few variants of s4, the problem is whatever you tried to flash after that, you didn't mention what that was. but it's kinda beside the point now.
when you enter download mode whatever model it mentions there is the firmware want to download and flash via odin.

I flashed a MDCModemOnly version of the CP firmware. Since the phone said its a SPH-L720, I thought the latest unlocked European rom would fix the antenna problems.
Clearly I screwed that up.

The SPH-L720 is a Sprint S4. So you'll have to flash that firmware. I believe sprint is a US carrier only, is that right?
So it's a CDMA (or CMDA?) device I guess. That means it uses different frequencies to connect to the network. I'm not really sure what I saying, lol. I just know that GSM and CDMA are a bit different when it comes to network connectivity.

Sprint, as far as I know, don't lock the bootloaders. Only AT&T and Verizon do.
Here you have the CF Auto root thread for the SPH-L720 if you still are concerned.
Is there any place to download the firmware aside from sammobile.com? They're demanding I pay them to download a firmware at more than 15kb/s!

You could try SamFirm. It's a tool for downloading Samsung firmwares, but it requires some info about the phone and, since you can't boot up, it will be hard to get.

Wow, thanks, that worked like a charm! Already had pulled my PDA, CP and CSC, knew the region and Downloading mode reported SPH-L720.
Currently downloading at 400kB/s.
Voila! Works. Stock SGS4 5 installed, only Knox Warranty set to 0x1, everything else's fine.
I've already rooted the phone with cf-auto-root and Odin, installed TWRP Manager, now what?
TWRP manager is asking me to install Busybox, should I do that? I'm attempting to install TWRP recovery and flash JDCTeam's AOSP 6.

TWRP can be flashed with Odin or with an app called Flashify.
I recommend the Odin method.
But if you want to install it with TWRP manager, there is no harm in that. But you do need to install busybox. Just follow the app's prompts.
Followed your advice, installed TWRP 2.8.4 via Odin, upgraded it via TWRP to 3.0.1.0.
Following this I've tried installing JDCTeam's AOSP 6.0.1 again. However, my cellular network has been deactivated. AGAIN.
Now what?
EDIT: My baseband is reporting L720VPUGOK3 according to the current ROM.

Is that the most recent?
It could be caused by the fact that the phone was repaired with mismatched parts.
Or kernel related. They have a stock aosp kernel that you can flash. Try with that.

Flash it via ODIN's AP command?
EDIT: Yes, I believe so. It is the one that was returned as most recent by both Sammobile and Samtool, as well as according to official samsung releases.
EDIT 2: Flashed it via TWRP, no difference. Still no network.
I don't get it, this is odd. The team lists L720 as supported, and my phone is unlocked, after all I can use the default SGS4 stock ROM with my SIM and network, so why isn't it working on this?

I've done that, still not getting cellular however.
Baseband version was NB4 on the original rom. Moving it to latest stock SGS4 brought it up to OK3. That is what JDCTeam's AOSP6 is also reporting it as.

You can try and update the modem and bootloader even further, manually, via Odin.
There is a dedicated thread in the general section.
I don't think it will work, but it may be worth a try.
If I look further...
Phone Model = GT-I9505
Bootloader = SPH-L720
IMEI = a GT-I9500 phone
I think it's a GT-I9505 phone with SPH-L720 motherboard and IMEI that tampered from a GT-I9500 phone. Really, I would bring back this phone to the seller.

Exactly. Things are really weird with this. But returning this isn't an option. Phone belongs to a friend and he's been using it a while. Can't take this back now.
Also restoring to stock wiped out the international unlock. Phone is showing Sprint in top left corner.
Right now the phone is 101% stock 5.0.1. If anyone can please help guide me through unlock this permanently for all future foreseeable ROMs and flashes, please.
Managed to unlock it via the S4 Unlocker, following the instructions in that thread.
Still can't get 4G LTE to run on it like it was before, but can confirm 3G HSPA+ mode is working fine on it.

After flashing original ROM, phone went into bootloop. Hard reset doesn't work.

My friend got an old phone from his dad, who had an old custom ROM installed on it, and asked me to return it to the original software.
I used ODIN 3.09 and installed the appropriate ROM which I downloaded from Sammobile.
The phone went into a bootloop, so I wiped the cache and when that didn't work, I wiped all data. After that the phone booted into the Welcome screen and my friend started to configure it. In the middle of the process, the phone rebooted, and now it loads into the Welcome screen, but reboots after a few seconds.
After that I've tried reflashing the software and doing multiple resets, to no avail. Any ideas?
Please let me know of any Ideas. I am very ashamed of damaging my friend's phone.
PS: I should say, I put a bootloader into ODIN the first time I flashed the software because some tutorial recommended it and I haven't seen that requierement in any other tutorial since. Might this be the cause? How could I test that?

The phone is a Note 3 N900 UB, the firmware I installed was N900UBSEBQB5, and to be honest, I can't quite tell what the bootloader is, the file I downloaded is just called "bootloader".
the file I downloaded is just called "bootloader
My guess is that's the fault as bootloaders are named same as firmwares
Example >>> BL_N9005ZSUGPJ2
Could be a bootloader for anything .because some tutorial recommended
Have you taken a chance to reflashing the official firmware with ordin , that would be helpful all the time.
After that you should make sure your phone work fine on the official rom .
Then update your Recovery to a third party Rec,like CWM or TWRP .
Next step,flashing an original rom.
