Universal Remote?

Looking for a remote I can use with my TV (not connected to the internet ) to control smile functions such as channel and volume up and down power and input. Is it possible to download one from the play store or side load one if there is none? I need it to work on a Samsung plasma tv.
I appreciate your help!

I don't believe the Nexus 7 has the required IR Transmitter to accomplish this. If, however, your TV supports Bluetooth, then it very well may be possible if your TV company has released an app to do this.

Universal Remote for Ouya?

This is not possible, correct? There is no IR "receiver" on the unit IIRC.
This will determine whether I put the Ouya in the main TV room where it's used by my wife and parents when they're over babysitting. Right now, I have the Apple TV2 and it's programmed in my Harmony so it's easy for them to use.
So, just to be sure, this can't be programmed with a universal remote?

There's no IR receiver, so the only think that comes to mind is a USB IR receiver, even then dunno what the remote would be able to actually control.

has anyone gotten cec to work with the ouya. there was a discussion on the ouya devs forum about it. cant post the link apparently

I have a Logitech Harmony One and have the IR to Bluetooth adapter Logitech made for communication with the PS3.
I don't have my OUYA yet, but when I do get one, it will be the first thing that I attempt to use. It only simulates PS3 controller inputs, and from what I understand, PS3 controllers work with the OUYA? Obviously would have no clue how to pair the adapter with the OUYA, but will be fun to tinker nevertheless.
Regardless, for XBMC purposes, imo nothing beats Yatse on my Nexus 4. Sure it would be nice to have all-in-one with the Harmony, but Yatse is just too nice, esp with the plugins (SMS popups on the TV and auto-pause/resume for phone calls). So not end of the world, but still would be nice to see if I could with the Harmony. At very least I'd expect someone to come out with drivers and a usb dongle.

Why did you pick this off-brand PS3 remote? The Sony branded PS3 remote has the same capabilities (bluetooth and IR), but is cheaper than SMK. The Sony branded remote is $18 right now on Amazon. The SMK one is like $30, Amazon and Target.
I don't have either device. But I have a generic IR remote with a USB receiver, and on my computer it acts as a keyboard input. I'm hoping it works on the Ouya. I think I can remap the keys using XBMC.

I have something similar myself. USB IR receiver with a remote that has a "touch disc" on it.
The device actually shows up on Windows as a Universal HID device that works as both a mouse & keyboard.
The media keys and stuff are mapped really oddly, but if you're gonna use it to drive XBMC, you can keymap all that crap without issue.
Then you'll have to make sure you put the receiver where you can get Line Of Sight.
Honestly I am kinda on the fence about this crap at present. I HAVE my Ouya, and it plays games and junk well, but I have a couple issues that I am sort of waiting on:
-No DTS / DD audio passthrough via HDMI to a receiver
-No HDMI-CEC
-Ouya & other game controllers only work as a very limited/terrible keyboard device in current XBMC builds
-No surround sound output from Ouya system-wide (output currently "stuck" on stereo)
-Can't change Ouya output resolution (currently stuck @ 1080P) (My projector wants 720P or 1080i to do SBS 3D content)
Some / all of these are supposedly going to be fixed in software eventually and all are things that the Ouya hardware CAN do. So far my short term lazy solution has just been to use YATSE on my 7" tablet (my main mobile device), which works fine for XBMC needs. I haven't really bothered to fully set up my XBMC stuff (like my library and a nice skin and junk) because I "need" audio passthrough for it to feel like a fully baked solution I will use all the time for movies and junk.

wasn't aware the official remote also worked as a universal remote.. (no ps3) I saw the blue-link mentioned on the xbmc site as well as the official ps3 remote

How is HDMI-CEC important if the Ouya already acts as the HTPC? Maybe you had something in mind that was different than what I was thinking of? Isn't CEC just a way for the TV device to control the source via the HDMI connection? Can't you just control the Ouya directly for whatever you wanted the CEC control to be?
Personally, a simple remote (like the Sony PS3 remote) that has IR to turn the TV on/off, and bluetooth to control the Ouya (pause/play/select) is most of what I'm looking for. Using a tablet or smartphone seem to not be as convenient for me.

To me, the required features are to have IR (to control the TV) and bluetooth (to control the Ouya). That'll keep you from needing to hold two remotes.
If anyone has the PS3 remote and an Ouya, I'd be interested in a detail review of how they work together with XBMC. Particularly, how you navigate the menu structure with the arrow keys. It would be nice to not have to use a coffee table mouse for XBMC.

I do and as far as xbmc navigation goes all the major functions work except for the pause and play button and volume but thats not a big deal since its programed to my tv. Navigating through the ouya menu isnt as good since the enter button doesnt work. Also if you have xbmc set to launch at startup and use the ps3 remote that will cause xbmc to crash initially and using the power button to turn the tv off causes the ps3 remote to lose connection to the ouya so yuo'll have to resart the ouya for it to work again. Am I correct in thinking the PS3 remote connects to the Ouya via bluetooth? So on the PS3 remote, the power button doesn't just send the power IR signal to the TV, but also acts as a soft-off to turn off the PS3 remote? Is that why the remote is losing its connection to the Ouya

yes its bluetooth, It seems that the power button also shuts off the remote. Its definitly not ready for day to day yet (I just went to use it and it caused xbmc to crash)

Thanks for the heads up. That's the kind of operational thing that makes a huge difference in how a device can be used, but you'd never know it from reading the spec sheet.
My plan for the Ouya was to use the PS3 remote, but the disconnect issue might be a big deal. I have a bluetooth mouse (microsoft brand) that I know goes to sleep when not in use, but it wakes up fast and connects fast. The sleep function is really not an issue for that bluetooth mouse.

Please help in modifying Shield TV Audio routing policy priority

I am using a usb wireless remote with shield tv which has mic and audio output option. Whenever I am connecting the wireless dongle to shield, sound output goes to the remote as it has priority over hdmi tv/sound bar setup and I get no sound in my sound bar. This problem is not allowing me to use the wireless remote with shield which is much better than shield controller in operation. Can anybody help me to change the priority of shield audio routing policy.
I tried soundabout app from play store and selected hdmi/optical as media audio, but its not doing anything.
Somebody please help me if you have any solution for this problem.

I just found this thread, because i want to buy the rii i28 for my nvidia shield android tv. Does the sound priority Problem still exist on tje marshmallow update?

Best thing to do is edit the audio policy or get a deluxe remote instead of the pro version!

I have the same problem with my minix neo a2. Can't use it without losing hdmi audio. It's a shame that nvidia did not provide an easy way to simply switch audio output. Also the back button on many remotes does not work. I am thinking seriously about installing the full android OS on the shield, maybe with this I will be able to switch audio output and get full use of my minx remote and also get the back button working again.

The same problem happens with the marshmallow update. Insert a remote with audio capabilities and lose HDMI audio.

What about disabling the audio output on the Rii i28?

Yes, it does. Even nowdays you can disable USB audio routing on Android itself. But if you use several remotes, you can disable all the audio directly on Rii i13 with Fn + W.
I am still in love with this remote, as I can replace literally all the remotes that I have.

Any way to use optical out surround sound with the nvidia shield?

Yes will the Nvidia shield pass the audio through USB?

It's full android. I saw reviews of same using it on android, and I use a DAC (Digital to Analog Convertor) on my shield. I personally have one that's micro usb male to 3.5mm and it works flawlessly. Imediately recoganized, no configuration. I got that edition as I only have 2.1 audio and it was a free extra usb port, plus it works on my phone too. Should work just fine.

What I am looking to do is use one of the usb ports with a converter to analog.

Like a headphone jack? You originally said optical, so I wasn't sure. What type of sound system connector do you need specifically. I'll find one one that's perfect.

Upon further inspection of options, you'll probably be best with something like this. It strips the 5.1 audio from the HDMI, then makes it optical. It's probably the most cost effective solution for true 5.1.

Unfortunately mine does not. I have an old 46" Sammy with excellent colors I don't want to give up. It has an optical port but you only get 2.1 that way.

Yep. That just strips the sound from the HDMI, so you can just use the out ports on that for sound and video. It's full 5.1 sound out, and normal HDMI passthrough so you won't lose any quality on video or audio.

It can add some small sound delay still, but less than a USB thing.
But I guess most content on android are in stereo so if you want some 5.1 effect all the time make sure your receiver does some dolby pro logic 2 for a 2.0 to 5.1 effect.

Things like Kodi will, or soon will, do 5.1 on the shield. I'm going to assume that's why this is being asked. That' and the only thing their reciever can accept is 5.1 optical, so either way, it's what they want.
EDIT: Checked up on it. It does support 5.1 audio with the lastest version.

Yes kodi, vlc,and most local video player support 5.1 and 7.1 content, but apps like YouTube,daily motion,some streaming tv/anime/movies apps and maybe popcorn time and Netflix,or some games and music streaming apps like spotify only use 2.0 sound.
In this case a dolby pro logic 2 mode is cool for a "all time" 5.1 sound mode if you see what I mean :laugh:
I use a HDMI pioneer receiver and it is really good one because it can switch from full Dolby digital 5.1 mode to Dolby pro logic 2 by itself if it detect 2.0 output.

Shield TV update 2.0 added support for USB to optical dongles.

Help me to setup TV and receiver power managment

When I try to setup TV and receiver power managment Shield allows me to choose only one.
It is ok if you deaf or blind but I'm not and I'd like to power on and off TV and receiver simultaniously with shield.
Are there any life hack for it?
Is there a voice command to send Shield to Sleep mode?

Wasn't this what they created CEC for? Assuming of course your TV was either new, or spec'ed up enough to have CEC where you could send the Power on signal to or from the attached Device. That also supports CEC Power On / Off.
At the moment I'm not aware of any Device specific voice commands. But, perhaps now would be the time to use that part of the Shield Settings to request such features. As this is something that would seem (to me...), to be reasonable. Once the nVIDIA Spot lands, and Google Home gets switched on. But this hasn't been released yet, and it may well be a long while before it actually lands.

In that case... You should probably invest the $60-ish or so Dollars on FleeBay for either a Logitech Harmony One, or barring that the Harmony 900, and set that up as your daily driver.

So basically what you mean is, you can only select CEC or IR, which is correct. But both are able to control tv and receiver, just not CEC and IR mixed together.

To be fair I haven't had much use for CEC. I find my Logitech Harmony Remote gets the job done nicely. Since everything in my chain has IR it's not a problem. In short I could set up a single Button that powers my TV, AVR, and say the Shield all in that order. And back off again with the Power Off Button.
CEC on the other hand would allow you to control your Devices from the TV, directing the input (usually IR), though the TV then out again via the HDMI Cable, to the other CEC enabled Devices in the chain. Or so I understand​ it. So it to would be a single Remote. But I wouldn't know how discriminating it would be. Assuming there are just some days you don't feel the need to use the Shield.
Of course for me thia also means that if the TV wants to do a Channel / Firmware search at 03.00h, and in doing so wakes up the Shield, Wich in turn wakes up the TV. Which in turn makes me upset as I only live in a One Room Apartment. So IMHO: TO HELL WITH CEC Auto Power!
