[resolved] How to root LG G2 VZW VS98039A - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello! I'm trying to root my LG G2 vzw, using ioroot. However, when I run the ioroot batchfile in Windows, I get the message:
Found VZW phone!
Checking OTA version...
We don't have an unlock for this Verizon OTA version yet.
Your phone is running VS98039A .
Please try the manual root method or
post your full device info in the thread
I don't know what pages "the manual root method" or "the thread" refer to. Is there a way I can either:
A) Revert my phone's ROM to the version it shipped with, so the ioroot utility is able to grant root access to my device?
B) Use some other method to root the phone?
I've been looking for alternate root methods. I tried Towelroot (installed the app, ran it, and it said "This phone isn't currently supported"). I also tried "LG Root" (their download site claimed to serve a file called "LG+Root.zip.exe" but really serves "LG+Root.zip.ace", which Windows cannot read).

This method works for me:

Thank you! That worked perfectly.

[Q] Is my Wildifire really rooted?

Hi guys,
I used unrevoked2 to root my phone.
I have the Superuser app and everything seems fine.
I wanted to use the patch to see all the app in the market, but when using the terminal from my mac I try to mount, it says permission denied.
I read somewhere that it could be the Superuser app that doesn't work properly. So I tried to update it, but when I download it from the market is says "Package file was not signed correctly ". I tried to follow the instruction in the thread of Superuser but again I can't mount or delete the previous application.
On another forum I read that when the phone is rooted, when rebooting in HBOOT it should say S-OFF, but mine is S-ON.
So the question is, is there something wrong in my rooting? Is there something wrong elsewhere?
im not a big pro but...
isnt unreovked3 is the oldest version that can root a wildfire? Oo
I'm pretty sure that only unrevoked3 works on the wildfire, not unrevoked 2 as they updated it for the wildfire.
Thanks for your reply.
I used unrevoked2 because on their website they say that they are working on same bugs on the 3rd and that is possible to use unrevoked2. Unrevoked3 is not available for download.
I'm looking for the mac version on the internet but I still haven't found. If you have a source it would be helpful.
Looking carefully it seems that I actually used unrevoked3 since I downloaded from here ->unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked2
The page says 2 (and there is and advice in a previous page that says that they "have taken the tool down for a short while until we're satisfied") but the source of the download says 3.14. I'm a little bit confused.
Anyway, if I have the Superuser app should be rooted. Or not?
EDIT: I found the unrevoked3 and tried again all the procedure but it doesn't work. I can't patch, I can't delete the old Superuser app, it still says S-ON.

[Q] Simply Gaining Root Access

I am interested is simply gaining root access (not installing a custom ROM).
I just received my Samsung Verizon Fascinate so it is running on updated software as supplied from Verizon/Samsung as of 1.10.12.
Is SuperOneClick still applicable?
Where can I locate the latest download and guide?
What is the latest version of SuperOneClick?
look in the guide thread right below this...section 5
I actually had reviewed that prior to posting. That method seems a bit more complicated than SuperOneClick which I have seen mentioned also.
Is SuperOneClick still applicable or is the method as described in Section 5 the only option currently.
Superoneclick worked fine for me running froyo. Not sure about GB though...
superoneclick is no longer an option or else it would be listed in the guide. Here are your options:
1) Follow section 5 of the guide
2) Use adb to push the su-2.6.3 root file to your device
3) Flash a pre rooted rom

STOCK and ROOTED SGH-I257M

Thanks to @spyke555 for his backup copy of the Rogers version of the SGH-I257M firmware. I managed to root it with vroot, so there is a chinese version of SU on there but it works. I also stuck busy box on it and tried to get rid of most of Rogers apps.
Now to use this, you must stick it into your backup folder (i.e: clockworkmod/backup) it is NOT a flashable rom, it is a backup. If anyone wants to turn it into a flash rom, or create custom roms out of it, please do. Need to see some I257M roms popping up.
Dropbox
Box.com
G Drive
We also have @dsavard copy of the stock firmware from Koodo, which you can flash with Odin
Dropbox
Mirror 1
And here we have all of the STOCK and UNROOTED firmware for the Canadian I257M over at Sammobile
All vroot does is give root access without changing the rom. It uses the chinese program Superuser 1.0.4. You can get rid of this by following these steps:
Go to play store and install SuperSU.
Start SuperSU and you will be asked for permission by Superuser 1.0.4, choose 允许(means allow). (Should be the right side option.)
SuperSU will prompt to install SU binary, go ahead with OK and it will display successful.
Now, freeze Superuser 1.0.4 in titanium backup, just in case you need it again.
Note: If you uninstall straight away from app manager, you need to make sure SuperSU updated the binary.
Re-run SuperSU to make sure everything is alright. You will be prompt again to install SU binary, just do what it asked.
After that, you are rooted with SuperSU and Superuser 1.0.4 will not be there anymore.
Once you do that, SuperSU will be the default and will be in english.
Good to see this here. I just picked up my S4 Mini today. I'm from Canada so I'm assuming it's a slightly different version than the other models? Cause mine in an SGH-1257M. Is it a different process to root it?
I'm not too familiar with vroot. My last phone was an HTC Evo 3D.

vroot is like SRS or any other one touch root program, but it's in chinese. Easy to use and has a high success rate for most phones. the I257M is slightly different from what we can tell from the other models; different features. As far as I can tell there isn't a different way to root this but I'm not to sure how the others were rooted. I also don't know if there is anything different between the Bell, Rogers, Fido, etc. versions besides their own bloatware. I hope I can get all the different versions uploaded.

Yeah, I have a Rogers phone. Just got it yesterday.
Is there a guide on here how to root with vroot? I'm not too good at rooting and whatnot. I've only done it once on my Evo 3D and that was more than a year a go haha!
Just google it. The vroot forum has step by step with pictures

There are forums here on how to temporarily give root and install CMW to make a backup.
Well, I just rooted my phone using VROOT. It is still recognized as an SGH-I257M. However, when any of my apps update it's all in Mandarin (I think?). Would I simply use the backup you posted? Would that solve that issue?
Will the I9195 roms work with phone even though I didn't root it as a I9195?

You can use the backup that I posted but it would be the same as your stock rom. The backup is just for those who don't want to root their own rom, doesn't trust the program, etc. The I9195 roms will still work, but when you flash them, your phone will recognize itself as a GT-I9195 instead of SGH-I257M
Sorry for bumping this, but I wanted to ask, did you have any trouble installing CWM after you rooted with VROOT?
It keeps telling me that SGH-I257M is unsupported.
What I did was use the I9195 rooting method to get CWM installed then switch back with I257M backup. It turns your phone back to I257M but CWM stays installed. You could also try installing twrp

Ah... that's why I'm having issues. I'll look into TWRP.
Edit: Just tried TWRP. No luck.
It wouldn't backup my ROM. Just booted me into recovery with no option of backing up.
Edit #2:
Slowly figuring this out. I unrooted my phone and re-rooted with the I9195 method. I now have CWM.
What I think it is, the I9195 method unlocks the bootloader where just rooting the I257M doesn't do that

Be warned, VRoot and Kingo rooting methods have been temporarily banned from XDA forums. All links to the software have been removed from the posts.
During the rooting process, they collects sensitive data like IMEI and send it to remote servers. XDA moderators are currently investigating the issue to determine if it was done with bad intention or not.

Hmm... good to know... thanks!
I unrooted my phone and re-rooted via the I9195 so I could get CWM. Hopefully it removed anything that VROOT left.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that was possible
@Omega2513 As a safer alternative, why not install the S4Mini_RootKit_v1.zip from arco68 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980) from CWM Recovery ? It is the same for all s4 mini (I9190, I9192 and I9195), so I suppose it will work for the SGH-I257M too.
It's possible it could work. Never tried it, but since it does the other models, I don't see why not.

I've got a backup of the latest Koodo SGH-I257M stock firmware [MK5 (KDO)]) by following this recipe:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23188887
I've uploaded it online for anyone who could need it :
[EDIT: Download not available anymore. Anyway the firmware is now available on Sammobile.]
It seems to be in the same format than firmwares found on the sammobile web site. So, it could be useful for those who wish to revert to stock with Odin... and know how to do it.

¿KingRoot vs. KingoRoot? [+Large List of Rooting Methods]

Hello XDA!
I'm not sure how many of you are using a Verizon G2 but unfortunately, my LG G2 VS9803AA Lolliopop 5.0.2 has proven quite difficult to get rooted. After trying several different rooting methods, it appears that the only two that seem to work reliably are KingRoot and KingoRoot. Some people have stated that these are both created by the same company, but after some searching it appears that KingoRoot is developed by a company called "FingerPower Technologies" while KingRoot was developed by King Studio. Apparently, not much is known about either company and there are reports of this software collecting questionable data from its users. I don't know much about the inner workings of cell phones or what information would be considered dangerous in the hands of others, but I've read that they possibly collect users' IMEI's as well as a couple of other things I know nothing about. They claim the information they collect is simply used during their sophisticated rooting process (which is what makes it so much more successful than other methods, I guess) and is discarded after use, never being stored anywhere. On the other hand, there are also plenty of raving reviews about these two rooting methods suggesting that they are the best & easiest methods to date. So I'm making this post to ask you guys your opinions on these two different rooting options, the differences between them, and whether or not one should be preferred over another (or not used at all).
Upon installation, there are some noticeable differences. After installing KingRoot, there was no shortcut created for the SuperUser app that it uses (KingoRoot does create a shortcut to its SuperUser app) so I'm not sure if they are using the same one or not. I believe KingRoot uses one called "KingUser" and KingoRoot uses one called "Kingo SuperUser," but I could be mistaken. KingRoot also installs an app that KingoRoot does not, called Purify. It seems like it could be a handy little well-made app that helps manage your battery by intelligently monitoring what apps you frequently use vs which apps are auto-starting and using up memory and shuts them down. It also helps manage pesky notifications. It has a very high score in the app store, so obviously people are enjoying it (or they're well versed in fake reviews, perhaps). It, as well, requires you to enable it under your "Accessibility" settings, however; presumably meaning it needs deeper access to your phone than most apps? It also claims to function optimally when your device is rooted. KingoRoot, on the other hand, did not appear to install anything aside from its SuperUser app on my device. Though, I have recently read that the newest version offers an application similar to KingRoot's Purify app called "Kingo SuperBattery."
Another difference is an app called Super Su-Me. It must be purchased (for around $4) from the app store, but it supposedly removes KingRoot from your phone after a successful root, and replaces it's SuperUser app with SuperSU - that way you no longer have to worry about it performing any malicious data-mining without you knowing (and because SuperSU is a better app in general). For some reason, this app is only offered for KingRoot and does not work on KingoRoot - which makes me think they must use a different rooting process? What do you guys think?
Both of them just use a simple 1-click - wait a couple of minutes - reboot - and done! method. In my opinion, IF they turn out to be offering reputable software with absolutely no malicious intent - then I must admit that these two rooting methods are quite impressive. I'd love to hear your guys' thoughts on the matter. Have you used them before? What did you think? Would you trust this software? Have you noticed any other differences between them? If you wouldn't suggest I use either of them, what methods would you recommend I use to my (difficult) G2 VS9803AA? I will list all of the rooting methods I have tried (and failed with) below. Let me know what you guys think!
Methods that have failed to root my LG G2 VS9803AA 5.0.2 device:
LG One Click Root
iRoot (formerly vRoot)
Towel Root
ioRoot
Stump Root
Methods that have succeeded in rooting my LG G2 VS9803AA 5.0.2 device:
KingRoot
KingoRoot
Methods that I have not tried (either because I have not had time, or because I read a report that it would not work on my device):
FramaRoot
Universal Androot
Z4Root
Baidu Root
Easy Rooting Toolkit
CF Auto-Root
SRS Root
Root Master
Root Genius
360 Super Root
Sincerely,
Terri (Psy)
Note: If there are any other reliable rooting methods that I have not listed, please let me know so I can keep the list as comprehensive as possible. Thanks!

You're very welcome, Rybean. Thanks for providing that link as well. That appears to be a better method than having to purchase an app from the playstore to replace KingRoot's SU with SuperSU. Has everything worked out well for you so far?

After testing the above method to remove KingRoot's superuser and replace it with SuperSU, after a fresh root with KingRoot - I can confirm that it works without issue. So, if any of you decide to utilize the KingRoot rooting method and would like to switch over to SuperSU - please try this method first. If it does not work, then I suggest trying the SuperSU-Me app from the Play Store.

everything about smartphone security is so scary. You get firewall with one click, you get root with one and you still don't know what kind code have them.

G930TUVS9CSC1 Root Guide

Hello!
These are a few files and guides for rooting a G930T with the Android Oreo 8.0.0 G930TUVS9CSC1 update.
Most Samsung apps, such as S-Health and Samsung Pay, will not function as Knox has detected root.
I've included a link to a patched S-Health app that allows for step-counting, but HR and Sp02 functionalities are missing.
Read all of this and the original guide linked at the bottom before performing any steps towards rooting the device.
-ROOT GUIDE-
-Backup any data on the device.
-Enable "OEM Unlock" in the Developer Options menu on the device.
-Reboot the device into Download mode. ODIN v3.13 should recognize it with an "Added!!"
-Add the v9 Bootloader into the "BL" entry box. Nothing else should be added or checked.
-Begin the transfer with "Start."
-Once the phone has rebooted into Android, open CMD with "cmd-here.exe."
-Enter "root.bat" into the command prompt window to begin the root process.
-Follow the root directions. There will be descriptions of each step in the CMD window, so read them carefully.
-Once the device has been rebooted and rooted, FlashFire, SuperSU, and other apps will appear on the device.
-Use FlashFire to flash the VoLTE icon removal zip. Check both mounting boxes for the flash to succeed.
The guide has been completed with hopefully no issues.
If for any reason there has been an issue or you'd like to unroot the device, stock files have been linked at the bottom.
In my experience, a factory reset and a flash of the stock files should undo most user errors.

Can somebody help me out? I am trying to go back to stock and despite having a free membership on sam, it will not allow me to download the stock firmware. It keeps telling me to sign up even though I am a free member. Free members should be able to get the latest firmware at a slow speed without paying correct? I dunno why somebody just doesn't toss these files up on a dropbox or google drive.

I'm in the same boat. From what I can tell, it seems like T-Mobile added bootloader 9 to the update, but I can't confirm whether using the version linked to in this post will work without issue or if the versions have to be a perfect match to not fail/brick/trip Knox.
All I really want is to root my old S7 so I can play around with root-level access. I'm not using it for mobile data, just tethering to my current phone's mobile hotspot, so it makes no difference to me if I end up with a T-Mobile tweak of Android or something more like a stock version.

Hi,
Upon trying the files you provide, I get the above error msg.
I've search everywhere (I think) in order to find the updated BL...
Thanks anyway - If you have a solution???

Hello! I'm a newbie in all of this, so forgive me if I'm asking something obvious.
I used this thread to root my Galaxy S7 (SM-G930T), Baseband version G930TUVS9CSC1, Android version 8.0, but I can't edit the hosts file.
Root Checker says Root Access is properly installed but when I try to edit and save the hosts file I get a message that I can't save because it's a read-only file system.
I tried to edit using ES File Explorer and Cx File Explorer with no luck.
A long time ago I had this same phone rooted with Android version 6.0 and I was able to edit the hosts file.
Any idea how to fix this? All help would be appreciated.
-------------
UPDATE: I found a solution. Another file explorer worked. I have no idea why the others didn't.
