Im sorry if this is the wrong thread to put this on well here is a video www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFVTQ2cd3kY&feature=player_embedded#at=63

either the video is fake, or gingerbread isn't as revamped as people think. the phone is apparently running 2.3, yet i don't see any differences from 2.2 other than that little white thing.
The screen looks too small to be a decent gaming device, plus when you get those people who keep calling till you pick up interrupting your game....fail.
I highly doubt this is Sony's flagship PlayStation phone device. Anyone who grew up with PSone, ps2, psp or even PS3 knows otherwise. Sony hasn't announced it and I hope to god they never do given this shoddy imitation of a real gaming device...

It does sort of look like a PSP go...
And the black notification bar with green accents .... I'm not sure j like the green accents and it appeared that when he was in the app the colors were more like the defaults. Not sure if that last sentence made sense ...
Either way, PSP phone seems very real and this seems like very much it.
SWYPED from my SUPASONIC
As long as It doesn't have a screen any smaller than 4 inches, this is the one phone that could make you trade in the evo! Theres a bunch of key features the guy in the video didn't point out like the shoulder buttons on the top of the phone or the dual optical track-pads in the center of the slide out area.
Did anyone happen to notice that, in the video, they never showed the "controller" part of the phone being used? That makes me wonder if it is real or not..
If it is a new PSP phone, it is missing a lot of buttons. that almost looks like a controller from 20 years ago (no analog stick and missing a few other buttons.) It wouldn't be a big thing if it was nintendo, but Sony always touts their gaming as more hardcore than that controller would indicate.
That being said, I am definitely interested in seeing where this goes if it is real.
It's not missing any buttons, the analog sticks is that metal part. Most likely a touch screen analog controller.
As far as incoming calls go, I'm pretty sure they have some kind of pausing mechanizim that gets deployed when a call comes in.
I would think that Sony would have some type of launcher to launch PSP or Android. Sooner or later the Source Code for the PSP app will be leaked and ported

and when dat happens, u can now play PSP games as .isos like u do with a modded psp now a days.
even with apk being stolen/released, it would be pointless. Im pretty sure the hardware in that device is well above any hardware that is out at the moment. Would cause major lag on the device if it used the gpu/cpu that are on phones like evo/epic/etc..

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G Review
"Bringing mobile smartphone gaming out of the touch-screen ghetto has never been better!"
The review's done, but I'm sure some tweaks could be made before it's truly complete.
Tell me what'cha think! Feel free to let me know if there's any extremely crucial things I neglected to mention.
I think you've been overly enthusiastic. You've failed to mention some shortcomings which may be important:
1) The device is meant to play games, but acquiring them is not something necessarily automatic. Gameloft, EA and others have been getting away with redirecting the user to their own stores and complicating the buying experience needlessly. And let's not forget the puny internal memory. The device is meant to play games, and the user is not supposed to go to XDA and find his hacks. Another jack-of-all-trades like the Samsung Galaxy S does have a lot of internal storage.
2) The device is meant to play PSX games (or so says Sony), but more than 6 months after it's out, there are none of those games for Verizon users and there are 6 (six, sechs, seis) games for the international ones. Let's not forget the absence of two shoulder buttons either. That shows that Sony wasn't taking the device seriously as for its retro-gaming experience.
3) The buttons were all designed and placed by a drugged monkey throwing darts at a drawing. The power button, which you actually should be able to access without looking at the device, is etched in, making it hard to find. And to make matters worse, the LED which is supposed to NOTIFY you of things is practically invisible, located there. The volume buttons are hard to press and barely indistinguishable. Did I mention you should be able to locate and distinguish them in the dark too, as you may be actually listening to music on your device?
The Play has the virtue of being a very lovable device: once you actually grab it, it's what you say, the jack-of-all-trades that many of us gamers have been dreaming of since we were little. Plus, the software side is good and it's been improving with time. Once it gets phased out with time we will fondly remember it and probably keep playing games on it because it plays them so flawlessly, and it will probably last us a lot of time because it does everything quite well. However, you need to spend time with it to know its beauties and get over its quirks. None of that is needed with the good old Galaxy S2, with its freaking gorgeous supercolored screen and its huge size and its super-fast everything.
Here is a six-month review which you may have read already, made by the great XperiaBlog team: http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/10/11/xperia-play-six-month-review/ As you can see, they're mostly in agreement with you, but there are other things to consider aside of how well it plays games and how all-around nice it is.

I can see how the general point of me being overly enthusiastic could be true because I am enthusiastic about it... but I most certainly did mention the puny 400MB memory (twice, by mistake - making one mention sound totally out of place) as well as the notification light (which I also re-iterated a number of times).
The PSX emulation is a good point, but without PS Suite even being here, I have nothing to judge except that "filler" PlayStation Pocket app that not every R800 version has/can use. I could state the lack of PS Suite, but that's along the same lines as judging an unborn child for not ensuring the future of a family's business.
BTW, the lack of 2 triggers has already been accounted for... I'm sure you've seen the option of putting L2/R2 on the screen that PlayStation Pocket has (very effective IMO) and probably just didn't remember though.
Market division is also a good point - but that's not really something I can blame on the Xperia PLAY. It's EA and Gameloft's decision to fragment the market and that applies to all Android devices that can play their games. If anything, bringing that up would easily turn into a pro instead of a con since Xperia PLAY's Game Launcher congregates all that into one so that getting to the external markets is made just a bit simpler.
Still though, good stuff... I already have some ideas for changes.

Just a small correction, in Europe there are 10 (ten, zehn, dez) PSX games available:
Cool Boarder 2
Destruction Derby
Jumping Flash
MediEvil
Syphon Filter
Kula World
Everybody's Golf 2
Jet Rider
Syphon Filter 3

Excellent review! I'm glad you recognized how awesome this phone is, but I feel like the GPS should have been more prominent. I mean, the Xperia Play has the best in-phone GPS I've ever used. I get a lock within seconds.
Once again great job on the review!
Two more quick things it seems, everyone else left off as shortcomings:
1. Finger prints on the screen: I had a Droid 1, wife has a Droid2 and 3 AND my Xperia seems to be the worst when it comes to fingerprints by far. I remember reading some early review a while back that also said the same thing. It seems the glass is missing some coating?
2. The 4 Android buttons do NOT light up!!
I still think this is horrible and can't believe Sony let this one leave the factory like this. AND to top things off, the buttons are placed next too each other. So in the dark NOT only can you not tell what button is which, u can't even see where one button starts and the other ends.
Yes, otherwise the review was very nice and I really need to check out that "hack" to move more apps to the SD card. The 400mb is another ridiculous thing.
PS: My last big dig is this one:
I love my phone as I assume all of you Xperia Play users do. BUT one of my biggest fears is that there is no follow-up.....where dose that leave us? The people that clearly love to be able to play games on our phones with physical buttons. Carrying around our old, deactivated (as a cell phone) WiFi only Xperia Play to use to play games. I really think Sony had something here but definitely fouled it up. From coming out in the US and the world 3 to 6 months later than it should to poor marketing to, still in my opinion, few games. Honestly, I still can not believe how big of a sales disappointment this phone has become. I was really expecting this phone to take off!!! It really had a niche and not just another iPhone wannabee copy. If you disagree I ask you two questions:
1. Have you ever actually seen/ met in person anyone else who has one?
2. Not every Verizon store carried the phone even when it was newer. (This was back in July)
Sad, I know.....
I haven't had a chance to read any of the reviews yet, but did anyone note that the buttons are way too hard to press without activating something on the screen due to the very small gap? I installed an Otterbox Commuter case which puts a ridge around the bottom so now it's almost impossible for me to press a key without also tapping on the screen. It was already difficult enough without the case but you could at least take note and be careful. Now I keep accidentally deleting email and such while I'm DELIBERATELY trying to avoid touching the screen!
I don't know what some of you are complaining about tbh, the only problem with the buttons is why did they bother putting a search button on it? Who actualy uses the search button?
And the fingerprint thing, I don't know if it's all models, but you realise there's a screen protector on it, right?
The only problem I haven't seen mentioned is the auto-rotate is abit to eager for a phone that big. Using it one handed and trying to press something on the left side of the screen often ends with the whole thing rotating when I don't want it to.

Thanks! And now that you mention it, the GPS is quite a bit snappier than it is on any other device I've used... then again, only ones I've used are the Xperia X10, my dad's Archos 500GB and my bro's Motorola Atrix.
It's made even a bit better because the original FW's had some serious connection issues. I had WiFi and GPS connection issues all the time, but 2.3.4 seems to just make everything absolutely badass.

It's a bit easier for me when searching the market, it quickly leads you to the "Xperia PLAY Optimized" search results of the market when you're in the Xperia PLAY Game Launcher, and you can tie a long-press function to it (if you're one of the people who care about stuff like voice controlling your phone while driving with Vlingo).
the Xperia play has its flaws, but I personally love the device and it will last me another year before I invest in newer devices.

At the rate it's getting games, I'm definitely gonna be interested more than a year
I was originally gonna go for raw power, but now that I have this phone in a place where I can measure and compare against my friends that have the Atrix, EVO 3D and Galaxy S2... Xperia PLAY, with it's Adreno-accelerated single-core is running Dead Space and Samurai II: Vengeance just as smoothly as the *top-tier* phones. Sorta makes me wonder what the point of all that power is.

Yeah I remember in July/August it had about half the games it has right now, Gameloft are optimizing one of their games at least once a month now, Xperia play is almost a year old and only now its getting good games.

I use long pressing on the search button to pull up Quickdesk which I really like for multitasking.
You're right that I don't use the search button for anything else, but that's why it's a perfect shortcut key for Quickdesk. I would be sad if there was no search button
Totally read this title as "After 5 MINUTES of ownership..." Hahaha. Oops! Anyway, I think anyone who has an Xplay loves the crap out of it. It's a shame more people aren't picking it up, it's truly the ultimate device, even if just for the emulator/gamepad duo amazingness alone! I love this phone so dang much.
OK, so I've now read your real-world usage reviews and I have to ask: Did neither of you guys notice the complete lack of a timer or notes application?
With no prior Android experience and coming from the perspective as a long-time iOS user who is also very critical of iOS, I considered it a shortcoming of Android to have no base functionality to compare to such basic tasks for a smartphone.
Now, what's with the lack of features that they promote on their website? They once promoted a 3D Panorama image capture function but they killed it for some reason and edited it out of the feature list online. I suspect that this is due to the faulty/erratic motion sensor problems. I noticed last week on the same feature list that they were still promoting a screen capture tool activated by the power button when, even after updating, there was no such function. After mentioning it on their forums, there is now a "To enjoy this feature, you may need to update your phone software." message under it and another feature that isn't there yet even with the most current update: Gesture input function. The Verizon version has that message on an additional feature: The front facing camera with various video chat support.
I also find some of the "optimized" games have TERRIBLE default controls for it. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a good example. Download the demo and just try aiming with the virtual analog sticks and you'll right back to using the infinitely-better touch screen in disgust. Perhaps some mention could be made of it? Shadowgun isn't much better.

That's what tells me that there must be something seriously wrong with mine.
Everything I did would hang, FC, crash, or chug. Even emulators were a problem. I just exchanged it so we'll see how things go.
You see, you have been a victim of AT&T, and of poor marketing. We R800i owners have screenshots, a proper front-facing camera and so on. No 3D panorama, of course, we didn't expect it with our crappy camera.
By the way, the lack of a default timer and notes app (among others which ch are natively offered in iOS) is something paradigmatic. It means that you can download them yourself. If you have seen some Android forums, you may have found many people who are developing ROMs and content which wipes most of the phone's default applications. People don't necessarily value what comes with the phone.
Nice review the play is getting better with all the new games.
SE have also supported their whole XPERIA line extremely well I say they have come from being the worst to the best .
Don't worry anout some of the critics of your review no phone is perfect, this is a very good first attempt at a gaming SmartPhone. Lets hope SE make a sequel.

Can anyone confirm that its possible to purchases these if you change the market's region or are will still stuck with it recognizing US hardware revisions?
A geek wants to buy her daughter her first android phone as a surprise gift, I am not a teenager anymore so I disqualified myself as an objective advisor.
I thought of making the question here, I know there are many teenagers playing around with their PLAYs here, and I know this is the right place to ask and take advice from other teenagers. Her preferred games are Zelda, Mario Bros, Zuma and that kind of games
ACTIVE or PLAY ??
PLAY pros and cons:
Playstation certified, Front camera for video chat (do you really use it a lot?), Physical gamepad
ACTIVE pros and cons:
More recent model, no front camera, no PS certified (yet), Water resistant and sturdy construction
I appreciate your oppinions
Well if she likes to play games then get the play for sure. As a teenager it is probably one of the best phones I have ever owned.
I use my plays camera with skype more than the one on my pc

Yes because sometimes my opinion is none of the above. And that isnt play hate. Iphone is very popular with the ladies
She will appreciate being able to facetime with her friends because trust me, they dont have plays.
if she's a heavy gamer, and likes emulator gaming (snes, gba, ecc) that has got their share of Mario and Zelda, then the xplay is the way to go, but be careful: the xperia play may be perfect for gaming, and that's one point in favor to "teenagers", but at the same time it has a big downside for that kind of person: it's bulky, and while most of the time it's a matter of opinion and tastes, i'd say that 90% of the world's population thinks this phone is definetly not beautiful. I'd go as far as to say it's quite ugly.
Maybe for a teenager girl that's a big point of interest, while i myself don't give two flying craps about it
But the active is a good piece of phone too. You said "it's a most recent model" but it has got the same exact hardware as the play, but that's not the point: dude i've seen videos on youtube made by a fellow italian like me in which he absolutely tries to destroy the xperia active without even scratching it, throwing it in puddles, trying to scratch its screen with screwdrivers, RUNNING OVER IT with a god forsaken car!!!
I really envy xperia active users. THey can experience their phones without that constant, persistent fear that gets to all of us when we take our 500 euro phone out of our pockets. Without fearing to scratch the screen with keys in their pockets, without fearing to drop it, without fearing to get it wet...

Well a lot of people like the gamepad. When you mention games like GTA, some peoples interest increases. Through all the tweaks and various great work of the developers on here, my phone runs quite smooth and handles well meaning it isn't really trashed for being old and outdated. It does lag or slow down sometimes but i guess that's to be expected. Some just call it a "PSP phone"

One time someone was even thinking that it can run every game from PSP, not tech guy tho
Some people are whining about outdated hardware, but when I ask them what can their phone do which mine can't they can't really say and they always play games which don't even need sd data
Other people say that not many games are optimised for it, I ask for example and then after they hear that almost every example is optimised they shut up
Other people agree with me that it's the best phone for gaming.
My Best Friends are bit jealous of 4 different roms of any choice (gb, ics, jb) but they don't play as hard as I do on phone even though they agree that it is a good phone.
Overall opinion is poor but after I slide the game pad people realise what it is and mostly they change their opinion to good/very good.

Everyone that asks me what phone do I have, after I open the slider, they realize that no matter what phone they have, just looks like a toy (with expensive/unnecessary gadgets to accomplish what the integrated gamepad of the XPlay does) in front of my Xperia Play.
In my country/area there are a generalized gaming culture, so that's the cause of this reaction.
Yeah, never missing that person that thinks it can run PSP games (although thanks to PPSSPP maybe in the future, at least struggling), the form factor deceives anyone

Yeah, surprisingly many people get excited when they see GTA 3 on it, few people wanted to go even more indepth than games and appearance (like specs)
Also before I had bought my XPlay, some cellphone store worker was interested about XPlay when we asked did they have any (they only had Arc), he said its a shame they are not selling it because he would have loved to try it out or even buy it. This was way after XPlay's retail release, like 6 months afterwards so he was genuinely interested about it.

I own quite a few 'nice' phones, but none of them give me that sensation of awesomeness that the Xperia Play does. That's why I will never part with it.

Really? Because all the recent notable Play Store releases from Modern Combat 4, Aralon, Scaresoul, ME: Infiltrator, Dark Knight Rises, NOVA 3, Dead Trigger, Repulze all the way up to Bladeslinger runs like a dream on Xperia Play, and there's been topics dedicated to Xperia Play running current-gen games with extraordinary performance.
What'd YOU do to your Xperia Play to get current games running at 10FPS?
I got a stock ROM without as much as Chainfire, and Xperia Play handles 'em like they were made for it.
xp2 is on hold.
i'd better go with the new HTC one as a base, because of the stereo front speakers and the better hardware
This sounds like a really cool & Fun thing to do, but even if anything were to go ahead and happen sony would shut it down as "Xperia Play Gamepad - Slideout" is patented...
So their would have to be some other mechanic other than a slide out!
But if this really happens, We would all be the ones LAUGHING in Sonys Face about THE COMMUNITY Creating a V2 of their successor!, They dont want to make a v2 because of the "PS Vita" Sales, I mean that thing was TERRIBLE!
So if this does conntinue on, im glad to contribute on the software side!,
but using galaxy s3 as base means that he cant do it
he should use xperia z as base so he can port sony framework to it and get all xperia play games work on that with jb
Beat me too it.
I was also beginning to do research of my own to begin on my own build (I was waiting till It was finished to post) also I agree with pedyvirus that the xperia z would be a better base.
QUESTIONS?
What specs are you hoping to have? (minimum)
What major changes are you hoping to integrate into your xperia?
Lastly wouldn't the slide out keyboard be fine as long as you don't try to make money off of it?
GOOD LUCK AND PLEASE KEEP US UPDATED
You could even try and make a phone case which could also be a gamepad
Just an idea

Personally I like the gamepad being part of the phone this way there are no connection errors, no need for Bluetooth, or compatibility issues. That's what makes the xperia play so amazing, its there when you need it with no hassle. If we were to have a gamepad case we would just be another smartphone.
ALTHOUGH if you are interested in game cases the best I've seen at the moment is Bladepad. It is only for iphone at the moment but it will be coming to android by the end of this year or beginning of next. Just go to Bladepad.com to check it out.

man
just look at my signature ...
i'll by your xperia play 2
Wow this is amazing. Maybe tegra 4 base and massive amount of ram. 5inches or more display. For controls if slide out is patended use on side (psp like) and clampshell (3ds like).
Im considering getting nvdia shield once released, but with this, with phone function i think this will be much better.

Hi guys,
an update:
looks like there is only one guy who is interested in making this device a reality. I won't say, but he's "pretty" well known in the mod scene.
I am still looking for people who are good at electronics
If you feel you have the talent, email me and I will support you
I'll definitely buy an Xperia Play successor, but I'm not that good in micro-scale Electronics. I really hope the best for this project.
I do hope for the best of this project. My suggestions are for the minimum spec it can run PSP games smoothly on PPSSPP. Has its own Game Keyboard, but still affordable

Unless he obtains the rights to use the hardware and goes through all the other legal issues, I dont see this available for sale. Maybe donate 'x amount' and receive a free phone but still, the undertaking of this project is likely the most ambitious on all of xda. I wish him luck but I won't be holding my breath.

I'm still breathing, bit I love to dream too!
I really like Thea idea of this.
I think the specs shouldn't be too
powerful(snapdragon 800 etc ).
They minimum I'd like to see is dual core clocked at 1.5hgz
I don't know why but I prefer dual then quad core and gpu of
Snapdragon 300.
But I don't really know alot on develoing phones but I would love
get my hands on xperia play 2 even if it had a dear price
I'd buy it
13mp camera 1080p
vita analogs
Nice clicky buttons like the old play maybe two separate pads that slide out to the side?
Exmor r
Bravia
1.7Ghz
Kickass snapdragon
2gb ram
To some up make it a ridiculously kickass phone.

is there actually an android version of the bladepad? cuz it is exactly what i had in mind 1 or 2 years ago when i saw the play the very first time and immediately knew the pad had to be portable over to another device as the hardware evolves faster than a successor would be created.

Not yet there should be one by the end of the year though but the problem is there's so many android devices it would be hard to support so they're probably only going to support certain popular phones or else theyll make a general one for certain sizes that clips on the back

Questions for everyone.
Just for fun lets have hear some opinions on xperia play 2.
Q#1
What are your 3 must haves for an xperia play 2?
Mine are #1 Physical analog sticks. I don't care if they are psp nubs, ps vita type analog, or real playstation analog sticks.
#2 Awesome sound quality (loud and clear) xperia play did this great and I hope they continue with this.
#3 An amazing screen I'm talking about HD to the extreme with the quality of games being so high now we need something to back that up.
Q#2
What design would you like Clamshell, slider, or candybar.
I would prefer a clamshell design with 2 screens one on the inside and one on the outside. This to me would be the best way to incorporate the analog sticks and massive speakers. also it would cool if it paused what you were doing on your first screen so when you were done gaming you can go back to what you were doing as soon as you close it. I like the xperia for the fact that you can hide the controls and hopefully the xperia play 2 will also have this business on the outside gaming on the inside.
Q#3
lastly, this is random but what color/material would you like?
If it was a color option it would be red all the way.
But if there was an metal one like the htc one that would be so awesome
